Sooo… soap?
Yep! Which has less plastic waste than a bottle of shampoo — that’s mostly why do many companies are launching them lately.
Yes but no!
Most of the solid shampoos are made with the normal surfactants used in shampoo and body-wash these days (sodium lauryl sulfate or its gentler alternatives).
The important difference is that those detergents won’t leave a residue on the hair shaft the way a traditional lye/ash+fat “soap” would if the water is too hard or too soft, and the pH of those products is usually less alkaline than a traditional soap, which makes them less drying.
But, there’s plenty of solid bar cleansers on the market now that utilize the same surfactants/pH balance for the same reasons, too. They’re often labeled as “soap-free” cleansers.
I did some research before switching to a solid shampoo and conditioner earlier this year!
So… Soap-free soap.
Also, with airlines limiting the amount of liquids and gels we can transport, this product ought to help. I will be taking a bar of soap rather than shower gel on my next flight.
