It's Tuesday and Evolution Day. Birthdays: Baruch Spinoza and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. What fragrance are you wearing?
I'm in Lush Turmeric Latte Body Spray. Tea at the moment is a mix of the latest Season's Pick Organic Assam from Upton and Kumi Chinese Breakfast Blend.
Reminder: on 11/27, pick your Black Friday poison...wear the last fragrance you bought, wear a cheap thrill, or wear a fragrance you love but refuse to buy in a full size because it's too expensive.
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try (but frequently fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
Note: the Hanging Spoon Hedgehog Brown ("You don't have to be a kid to enjoy fun things. You just have to accept that other adults might judge you. Let the judgment begin, I say! Who can resist these cute hedgehog hanging spoons??? No one. No one.") is $12 at Miya.
Sampling DSH Le Serval which is a skanky animalic honey. It’s been on my skin less than 15 minutes but it looks like it’s headed to the wishlist since it’s very much in my wheelhouse
“Skanky animalic honey” sounds like something that is very much in my wheelhouse, too. I need to check this out.
That description makes me think of The Dark Side by Fracesca Bianchi. Dirty honey…My hands are itching (Dutch expression) with the black friday discounts…
Sounds too good, sadly not available in Europe, except for a blind buy
I’m in a couple of sprays of Cartier Le Baiser du Dragon, a bottle from the 2003 launch (they still sell it, but it must have been reformulated repeatedly by now). It’s a complicated floral oriental — vetiver, gardenia, patchouli, all sorts of things — but mostly it smells like someone spilled a bottle of amaretto into a cedar chest, and it is so warm and comforting on a cold not-quite-winter morning.
You smell marvelous, I hardly ever see this mentioned anymore. I have a mini that hasn’t been worn in ages, you just provided my inspiration for sotd, pyramus.
Both the bottle and the perfume are works of art.
I’m wearing Brooklyn by Galivant, for a day of not much to do (hooray!). I plan to drink some coffee soon and perhaps read a little?
Have a great day everyone!
Oh goodness, your day sounds great!
I did all my cleaning yesterday so I could have a day like this today. Past Chris is often a jerk, but yesterday she really did current Chris a favor!
Enjoy your quiet day! ?
I am! I’ve taken the dog for two walks and am now reading a book with the cat snoozing beside me.
Nice!
I’m sampling Poivre Samarcande for the first time. Perfect for a rather grey cool day.
Yay for Poivre Samarcande. I’ts not my usual style, but I love it.
I love it too!
A favorite of a good friend of mine!
Love that hanging spoon!
Wearing one of my favorite cheap thrills, Pacifica Tibetan Mountain Temple. So sad it was discontinued. My bottle is nearing the end and I am hoarding what is left.
Cold but sunny day. Drinking coffee and getting ready to go out to get some stuff for Thanksgiving dinner. I am in charge of the salads.
Happy Tuesday!
I love cheap thrills!
?
Please tell me what salad you’re doing. I’ve focused so much on other stuff I just realized last night I had very little “green” in the menu haha
I love bagged salads for this reason – last minute decisions are so easy! How about baby spinach with bleu cheese crumbles, dried cranberries or pomegranate seeds, and candied pecans? If someone has a nut allergy sub in salted pepitas. My sister always brings strawberry balsamic dressing but balsamic and I don’t agree, so I don’t dress the salad in the bowl – just provide small pitchers of various dressings.
Sounds delish!
I might have this for lunch, sounds delicious!
If you want easy healthy green sides, I steam baby carrots until tender, mash with a potato masher, add a touch of butter, salt & pepper to taste, honey, and freshly-chopped mint leaves. It’s colorful, fast, and healthy.
Milk Street has a kale salad that is fantastic where you rub the kale with roasted almonds and breadcrumbs. It is perhaps something to do with gloves this year if you’re feeding anyone other than your household 🙂 !
I’ve had that salad – it’s yummy!
Hi Kelly, I will be making a Santa Fe salad and a Jenny Allen’s fruit salad.
Here the links:
https://www.tasteofhome.com/recipes/santa-fe-salad/
https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/235105/jenny-allens-fruit-salad/
Santa Fe sounds very good for a festive occasion and with DH loving beans so much it might work around here. But wouldn’t you use NOT fat free sour cream and cheese, c’mon, now 😉
I never use sour cream. I use olive oil instead, which makes it lighter, tastier and healthier. Adding cheese may be a good idea. I would use feta cheese.
Hope that your shopping trip was easy-peasy!
It was a good idea to go today. It wasn’t crowded. I feel that tomorrow is going to be crazy!
I am wearing Chanel Cristalle Eau Verte today and drinking a cup of green tea.
I mentioned yesterday, that over the weekend we were able to have a small bridal shower for my daughter, who is to be married in March. I forgot to mention something that nst’ers will probably think is fun. My husband wanted to send something to shower for his girl. Our daughter opened up a gift set of Geir Ness Laila perfume, to wear on her wedding day. She takes after her mother with her love of perfume 🙂
Aww! I haven’t heard of this perfume but I am sure it will smell lovely on her wedding day..
Oh my gosh, this almost made me cry. That her wedding day perfume came from her dad.. It’s just extra special!
My best friend wears that perfume and smells glorious. What a sweet gift from your husband!
Agree with lillyjo, that makes me want to cry. Super special!
How lovely!
That’s so lovely! I joined one of my best friends (no perfumista) when she bought her wedding perfume. Felt very special!
Oh, that is so sweet! My dad dropped two pennies in my wedding shoe for luck. ?
What a sweet memory she will have!
How sweet! Now she’s all set for a lovely ceremony. ❤️
Oh, that’s wonderful! All the perfumed feels.
That is lovely! And FWIW, you smelled great on Tuesday (Cristalle Eau Verte is one of my all-time favorites). And I bet you smell great today, whatever you are wearing.
Tea is Pleine Lune by MF
SOTD Chanel Allure refreshing mist and a dab of the parfum
After commenting with SmokeyToes on makeup yesterday I am donning a full face, even though myself and my chubby buddha are the only ones to see it. Chanel watery foundation, ombres contraste duo and Legende lipstick.
This thrift sweater with leggings https://images.app.goo.gl/QYqEMJpH27APqJVHA
I love the outfit!
ST-Its not as soft as my Scottish cashmere sweater from yesterday.
But I feel very chic with this and all my makeup
I got out all of my lipstick the other day to choose one for a Zoom meeting, and I miss them like dear friends. I have 3 Zoom opportunities for makeup every week and choosing lipstick is the hardest part. I rarely wear makeup in public anymore since wearing a mask- eye makeup is out since you can’t touch your eyes.
which color did you pick for your lips?
Urban Decay cream lipstick is my favorite formula. I wore Rapture with Rapture blush and a pink sweater.
Urban Decay’s Rapture is so amazingly versatile! A favourite of mine.
I love UD Rapture, too! On me it is essentially a neutral. If I’d been wearing much lipstick lately I’d have thunked my third tube earlier this fall. Have been enjoying UD Nighthawk, which is a super-dramatic dark red/purple/brown on me — until I blot well, and then it becomes deep but subtle. (If that makes sense.) Am also discovering that my shift from dark warm brown hair to my natural VERY dark, cooler brown that is 75% silver has changed how my lipsticks look. Kinda fun.
I’ve been wearing concealer daily (which I didn’t donpre-pandemic) because I just can’t hide those dark circles in a google meet. I’m wearing lipstick daily now once I get to work and I’m safely in my classroom – I can take my mask off (we’re still virtual) and it makes me feel put together.
Love Pleine Lune!
Hi all, my SOTD is Chanel’s Coromandel, with Chanel makeup, lipstick is Coco Rouge Experimental, a bright Coral.
Mr. Smokeytoes is off all this week, we’re going for a nice walk in GG park a few moments.
Smokeytoes is happy the Mr. is home.
Have a great day all!
Coromandel is lovely.
You smell divine
I love that you are wearing makeup, SmokeyToes. I haven’t in 18 months and am beginning to miss it. My fair skin appears tanned from a medication I’m taking so I have nothing that’s the right color any more. Not really looking forward to a Saks or Nordies visit to get a better foundation. Love the velvet Chanel foundation but usually go with Armani for the wide range of hues.
For elegant texture and shade selection, I love Loreal’s True Match Foundation. It has a beautiful finish, a refined, lightweight texture similar to Chanel’s Velvet Lumiere and Armani’s foundations, it’s inexpensive, $13 at any drugstore. Loreal True Match comes in Cool, neutral, and Warm undertones, so there’s something for everyone. I find it doesn’t oxidize and has reasonable lasting power. I don’t use a primer but Australian Gold Mineral SPF 50 (also cheap as chips) broad screen sunscreen acts as both a primer and sunscreen. It’s a favorite sunscreen of mine.
Thanks for the recommendations Smokeytoes – I need to go foundation shopping sometime soon.
Happy to help! 🙂 I do love a nice foundation!
If you need a mascara recommendation – Loreal’s Lash Paradise is a dupe for Better Than Sex Mascara by Too Faced Cosmetics. It adds a nice length and thickness to my lashes, and doesn’t irritate or flake off.
I’ll try those. CVS is more manageable than Nordstrom’s rn. I use Eucerin SPF 30; sometimes it pills with foundations, especially the Armani. Thanks!
Good luck! I love the Australian Gold, it’s very good for summer, with the increased heat and humidity.
EltaMD is an excellent sunscreen that doesn’t pill with most foundations, but it’s expensive.
DRMTLGY has a nearly exact duplicate sunscreen as the EltaMD, it’s a Universal Tinted Moisturizer SPF 46, with moisturizers and niacinamide and it’s half the price.
Enjoy your time together ? You smell wonderful!
Woke up in Chanel no 5 edp and I am just going to stick with no 5 today. I have been doing little cleaning projects between shifts at work and today is going to be a little strange and crazy. Working a longer shift at work, little longer than what I am used to and it’s a couple days before a holiday.
House twins ?♀️
Hope it is not too crazy at work today Dawn.
Hi all!
Goin’ and blowin’ today. I’m ready for a staycation! I chose Yvresse today, another of my favorite “vintage” perfumes. I’m lucky enough to have (hopefully) a lifetime supply but if I found another bottle on my expeditions, I would snap it up. ?
I got my Covid-19 test results back from Saturday, though that does not chance my behavior in the slightest.
Stay safe all!
Such a great perfume.
Stay safe yourself!
Thank you!
I must have missed your original comment…so your test was negative?
Yes, should have led with that!
🙂
I always liked Spinoza! Happy birthday to him…only 388 years late! 🙂
SOTD is Erik Kormann Eau de Fröhliche No. 2, as my kid is REALLY into the Christmas spirit this year so we’re doing things a bit early.
That spoon is adorable!
Eau de Fröhliche! Hahaha – brilliant name ???
Agree about the spoon, and agree Christmas should be sooner and longer 🙂
Sampling Les Indemodables Vanille Havane today for the 2nd time. Notes are Rum, cocoa, dried fruits, tobacco, floral notes, clove, cinnamon, cardamom, woods, leather. It’s quite nice and I detect no iso E in it or, if there is some, it must be a modest amount. I have found more and more of late that too much iso E ruins fragrances for me. 🙁 And it seems like many niche houses that have risen up in the past 5-10 years really love using it.
That sounds wonderful!
I don’t know if I can recognize Iso E but I think I don’t like it either..
I think Perles de Lalique also has lots of it….
Oud Bouquet has some but not in excessive amounts. To me, it smells like effervescent woods.
I’ve started to be super sensitive to Iso E. If you want to isolate it lilyjo, go and sniff Encre Noir (which smells great until you can’t tolerate Iso E anymore). Sel de Vetiver also comes to mind. There is also a woody chemical that they use as a woods base (AdP Sandalo had a boatload of it) – it is incredibly loud and tenacious. I had to scrub twice with soap and water and finally used rubbing alcohol to get it off. For me, personally, ambroxan or whatever is in D+G Light Blue, also makes me want to chew off my arm. And you’re right, it seems the newer perfumes have more of these aromachemicals.
What’s common to both Encre Noir and Sel de Vetiver is…to my nose…Vetiver… I don’t think I can detect a particular chemical though ?
ISO E Super is a very large molecule compared to other molecules and smells wonderfully woody to most people. For those of us that have a sensitivity, it is just ridiculously persistent. I had to launder a beloved sweater 3 times to get the smell out. It is in almost everything because it is an ingredient that adds lift and longevity to fragrances. Encre Noir, Terre D’Hermes contain quite a lot and I detect it in almost every Byredo I have sampled. There is also a pretty big slug in Tauer PHI but after I apply I just grit my way through the first 15 minutes until it settles down and all is well.
Another iso E sensitised here! For me the turning point was the Ormonde Jayne sample pack, sadly could not love any as all I could get from them was peppery rubbing alcohol (and a headache). I don’t like any Byredo either. As She-ra says, many new niche houses use loads with other modern effect molecules.
I’ve found that sticking to houses that go for “traditional perfumery/vintage style” or the good old classics tends to keep me out of trouble (or from wasting my money in totally unloved samples).
Hi She-ra,
Have you tried other scents from Les Indemodables?
I’m all of a sudden curious about them and have considered ordering a sampler set from Luckyscent. Would you say they’re worth my time/money?
Persolaise did a YouTube review of their sample set recently – he was very positive.
Oh, thank you @ka_rina ! I will watch it.
I bought the recent sample set from LS too. 🙂 I actually bought a prior one a year or so ago that had just 4 of their perfumes and thought they were all well done and I really wanted to try the new vanilla so I upgraded and just rehomed the old set to another NSTer. I have enjoyed the house and it doesn’t have the aroma chemical vibe I find w/ lots of niche houses that have sprang up in the past decade. These are the ones I tried and enjoyed so far:
Chypre Azural
Rose de Jamal
Iris Perle
Musc des Sables
Sticking with Tauer today- Lonesome Rider.
I’d like to declare that Tuesday is the worst of all the days, ugh.
I second that motion. 😉
Yes, ugh for Tuesday. I need to find something about Tuesdays to look forward to!
Regardless of how bad the day is, rest assured in the knowledge that You Smell Great! ?
?Yes!
It does help, actually ha! It’s not a BAD day per se, I’m just impatient for the holiday haha!
I was so impatient today! Fortunately it was rather busy for a while after lunch, so the afternoon went fast.
You smell lovely.
Tuesday is the worst of the days. At least you smell fantastic! Waft some over here please.
Come stand close and get a whiff!
Okay, so some good Tuesday news- I went for my checkup today and with healthier eating, cutting back on delicious cocktails (haha), and exercising more, I’ve been able to lower my blood pressure enough that I’m ALMOSTT off of bp meds. I’m on the very lowest dose of what I take and I go back in three months. My goal is to keep up the good work so I can completely come off of the meds then. 🙂
That’s fantastic, go KellyC!
??
That is such good news – glad you shared it!
That is wonderful!!!
w00t w00t!
Well done! Very inspiring.
You smell wonderful!
I’m in my new Lost Cherry travel spray again. Just a lovely hum of warmth and sweetness for my morning. And my morning is not great (work-wise). I am taking tomorrow off – soooo ready.
My work isn’t bad per se, but there’s hardly anyone here and I’m quite bored. I’m not off tomorrow but “working from home” so mainly I will refresh my screen off and on so it looks like I’m online whilst I prep for Thursday lol.
I’ve only ever sniffed LC once but it was lovely!
Love Lost Cherry! You smell great.
I’m working my way through 30 parent conferences today, so it’s a long haul. But my sister sent me ELdO and Ormonde Jayne sample sets for my birthday, so at least I get to test new things while I zoom, zoom, zoom. Fat Electrician and Jasmine et Cigarette are my favorites so far.
And most of the parents so far have been great, as usual! Just one who is telling anyone who will listen that she hates virtual schooling.
LOL does she think she’s the only parent who hates it, thus needs to announce it for all to hear?
It’s amazing how draining virtual parent teacher conferences can be. I hope you find some new favorites in the samples your sister sent!
Completely! I was feeling ok, but now I’m tired, and I still have 11 more! I hope yours were rewarding even if they were exhausting.
Fat Electrician and Jasmine et Cigarette are my favorites so far from ELDO. Let us know what else you like from the line!
ELdO favorite twins!
Yay!
30 in one day, wow. Hope you have something relaxing and wonderful lined up for tonight!
I hope that you are enjoying some well deserved R&R tonight!
As a parent, I can’t tell you how much we appreciate it. I know it’s got to be grueling, but at our school we only get one chance a year to talk to the teacher unless there’s something up (the other regular conference is student-led), so we value the 15 minutes we get.
That said, I’m so glad we haven’t gone back to virtual schooling and our conferences were in person (with a shield in-between). Everything else here is likely to close over the next week, but they’re doing their best to keep the schools open with appropriate precautions.
I’m wearing Glenwood, part of a launch of scents from Scotch Porter, a line of men’s grooming products. I attended a really enjoyable Sniffapalooza event for this brand last night. There are four scents, and Glenwood is my favorite (although all of them are really quite good). The Scotch Porter team was there to present, as well as the two perfumers. It was a real pleasure to listen to the perfumers talk about their process.
Glenwood is described as a woodsy oriental, with green top notes and a base of sandalwood and cedar. This one is a clear winner for me; it’s contemplative (a la Jaisalmer), but also has a certain edginess to it. I like that it doesn’t veer fast and straight into a cedar dry down; the notes all stick around for a satisfying amount of time. I wish I had written down the more extensive notes list from the presentation.
If I remember correctly, they are planning a big Black Friday sale. Currently, their website doesn’t have a dedicated fragrance page, but you can find the scents by typing “fragrance” in the search function.
Is it really only Tuesday?
I thought yesterday was Tuesday and was not happy to find out I was mistaken.
I hate that!!
I registered for that but my husband had an unexpected family situation so I wasn’t able to attend. The samples they sent were so generous!!! Tom has been wearing Porter House for the last three days. So far, I’ve tried Badlands on myself and thoroughly enjoyed it.
sistine, so sorry that you missed the great conversation, but at least you’ve got plenty of scent to try! Badlands is very forest-like, lots of fresh air, grass, and trees; beautiful.
Hi Lisa,
Sniffapalooza did a great job with Scotch Porter, I agree. You really nailed the description of the event.
Miami Duppy fit the bill for me. This is that boozy, smoky, vanilla with a bit of saffron scent I have been looking for.
Badlands was my second favorite. It used Haitian vetiver and the salty, fresh marine was an excellent mineral take on a marine scent.
Glenwood I could easily wear daily. Porter House, I think is something I would like on my husband. A very fresh fragrance.
Everyone of these were so well constructed and last!
Very grateful for these opportunities to meet the perfumers. Pressing further into their portfolios, I want to test all of Catherine Selig’s work.
I think the sale is 50% off. Seriously, this company is generous. Our samples were 15mls. I’m hoping other companies lower their prices, like this brand. Just because they could slap a $100+ price tag, they didn’t.
And I love that.
Agreed – the decants they sent were amazingly large. I could use these for quite a while, but I’m definitely going to purchase full bottles during the sale. I loved meeting all the folks at Scotch Porter, and having the perfumers discuss their work was brilliant.
Miami Duppy is dreamy; it has a kind of iridescent, swirling quality to it, almost hallucinogenic. Maybe it’s the combination of boozy notes with smoky notes that makes me think of swirling air. That’s not to say that it’s light and ethereal, though — it’s potent. And you know I adore saffron notes in perfume (and I love me some tahdig, as well).
So much to do today, and I’m just not motivated. I’ve been trying to search for Christmas deals online, on a tight budget. It’s exausting and frustrating.
Sotd is a layering idea gone horribly wrong.. Sol de Janeiro bum bum cream with Angel eau Croisiere on top. It’s so sweet I want to throw up, lol. I should just go back to bed.
Do it. I fully support you going back to bed. 🙂
Thanks for the support! I did it, lol.
I am on a tight budget for Christmas too. I hope if there are any deals to be had for what I am looking for, they better be really good.
I wish I knew when the best best deals would be for what I’m trying to get.
Or they sell out within 2 minutes or less.
Exactly! It’s maddening.
I’m glad I’m not around to smell you, but am sending you a virtual hug and good shopping vibes.
Seriously, I stink pretty bad! Lol
Experimenting means the occasional disaster, but it’s all for the greater good ??♀️ Iv found one or two real winners in lockdown. Had at least 2 scrubbers ? And there’s been a few that we’re just meh.
I’m usually pretty good at it, but I obviously didn’t think it through today ?
I LOL’ed at your comment about wanting to throw up. ? Sorry, but I have encountered some things like that and had the same reaction.
I was pretty mad at myself. It was a sickly combination!
Oh, with you on the tight budget (actually…don’t know whether I’m on a tight budget or it’s business as usual as they told us in early November that layoffs were coming and now we’re all just sitting around waiting and wondering…). On top of it all I have to get gifts in three countries and if the mail in the US and UK is working like it is here in Canada, I’d best have ordered everything two weeks ago for it to arrive on time.
Wondering if the UK does Black Friday deals like they do here in Canada, for no good reason except that the US is close by?
Guerlain Iris Ganache for me.
Iris and white chocolate, what else can I ask for?
I never managed to sample that one, but you probably smell marvelous!
And I never bought it! Ha!
I had a sample in the past, now I have a 5 ml decant which is around 40% full at this point.
Iris Ganache was discontinued in the meantime and brought back later apparently.
VCA Bois d’iris today as I needed something calm. Ruined my sweater when I added some bleach to the bedlinens in the washer. I am so clumsey. And more so when I’m stressed. So I need to look after myself coming days.
At least you smell good and put together 🙂 Sorry about the sweater.
Oh no for the sweater…
But you smell good!
You smell amazing. I’m sorry to hear about your sweater. Please take care of yourself.
Sorry about your sweater!
Take care of yourself, Hilde.
You smell amazing- one of my favs. Please do take care of yourself.
Sorry to hear about the sweater.
Oh, I’ve done that while cleaning with bleach — despite best intentions, I always somehow get it on my clothes. Sorry about the sweater.
Lashings of Dryad for me today – it’s so soft that even at lashing strength it’s not overwhelming. Robin, I love that you mix different teas – I brought the rest of my tea stash home from the office last weekend, in the ongoing clearing-out of the desk ahead of year-end retirement (I hope), and I feel somewhat inspired to try mixing some of mine. The orange spice one in particular could use some toning down, iirc.
Oh do…I never used to, but once I started I quickly realized that you might as well get what you want, right? Plus, it’s fun to experiment.
Why do you “hope” — are you not sure you are retiring?
I’m pretty sure 12/31 is the date, but there’s a remote possibility that my company will ask me to put it off for another month or two. Not super likely, but nothing cast in stone yet so I’m keeping fingers crossed. 🙂
Ah. Well, even 2 more months…the end is still in sight! Will keep my fingers crossed with you.
SOTD is Demeter Black Russian. Might as well smell boozed up while I’m out doing my final Thanksgiving grocery store run, lol. Wish me luck!
Do they make a White Russian?
The Dude does.
Hahaaa! Yes, he does.
LOL
Good luck! Check your list twice before you leave the store. I always miss one thing and then am so annoyed at myself.
Same, thus my trip after work this evening! Ugh!
Good luck and be safe!
Good luck pixel!
Hope that your grocery run went well pixel!
We had our first accumulating snow this morning, big fat goose feather flakes just on the grass and rooftops. Now it’s changed to sleet which is a lot less pretty.
Here too.☹️
Boo hiss.
Ugh, sleet.
I’ve been working like crazy the past few weeks. Very ready for some leave. I’m one of those people who start to feel abused and resentful when I’m overtired. Very mature of me.
SOTD: Amouage Beloved from a decant. I’m late to this brand. I thought the perfumes would be too opulent for me (I’m not into orientals and ambers), but the ones that I’m trying now are all pretty, pretty, pretty good. Sadly.
Oh, and I made this recipe on Sunday night (as is, with all the butter and browning it) and it was the best corn pudding ever. https://smittenkitchen.com/2020/11/corn-pudding/
Corn pudding — yum!
I just got the newsletter, and that one is going on my menu Thursday. Glad to hear that it makes the grade.
Her recipes are sooo good. I may try a half recipe of this one. She gives the ingredients in gram weights, which makes scaling the recipes so easy. Not affiliated, just a long time fan.
That does look good. Corn pudding is not familiar at all to me. But I grew up with my great-aunt’s scalloped corn on the table every year for Thanksgiving and continue her tradition to this day.
I’d never heard of corn pudding until people here started mentioning it.
Hope you will get some rest, Amyitis! It’s hard to be mature when you’re exhausted.
Testing Cuir Velours by Naomi Goodsir. I got a sample order yesterday and 4 out 5 are at least likes while one is a big no.
Is Cuir Velours like Cuir Ottoman or is my memory faulty?
They are very similar but not totally identical. I own and love both.
good to know!
I don’t remember Cuir Velours well, but I only wore my decant once before deciding it wasn’t for me. I guess some aspect of it didn’t sit right with me. But I LOVE Cuir Ottoman.
maybe the iris in velours? But the ottoman has that too, I think?
I’m with you. Cuir Velours was a “nice, don’t need to own you” and Cuir Ottoman is an FB fave.
Which one is a big no? What did you think of Taklamakan?
Taklamkan is a like so far but haven’t given it a full wear. The big no is….Khol de Bharein – which you told me a while back you didn’t like, I should have listened! 🙂
I just love that little hedgehog peeping over the edge of the bowl.
SOTD is Invasion Barbare which sounds like a raid by Genghis Khan whereas in actual fact this is one of the most refined and affable masculines I know and one of my favourite MDCI’s.
There are also kitties, otters, pandas…
I do love hedgehogs 🙂
In this case, I think the hedgehog was THE lemming….
??
Using up my sample of SL Chergui. It continues to smell a lot like Bulgari Black to me, if an opinion not shared by many…
You smell super good.
My city is apparently on track for its dullest November on record – I believe that, we’ve had so little sunshine. As the weather warms up with opportunities for open sandals, usually from September, I paint my toenails – they’re not painted yet. I’ve worn sandals once so far this spring 🙁
De Profundis today, a melancholy scent for a dull and damp day. Work has been crazy, but at least I always smell good 🙂
That sounds like my November last year, I think we had 11 days of sun. This year has been better. I hope you get some sun soon!
Oh boo!!! That is what I expect from my November but obviously not what you expect for yours.
L’Air de Rien again today, because my dress still smelled of it this morning. So i just toppped it up. A collegue brought cheesecake for lunch, which was very nice. And a walk after work with the boyfriend, so now i am ready to relax.
Ahhh, cheesecake. That’s a good coworker.
Wearing a cheap thrill, Yardley Iris. It wears like a body spray so I can spritz away.
Sometimes I think the less expensive a perfume is the more I enjoy it. ?
Wearing L’Heure Bleue EdT today, after biting the bullet on a bottle, and I’m not sad that I did. 🙂 After having complained a few days ago about my bottle of parfum going off, someone here suggested the EdT- wish I could remember who that was! Loving this version, too.
Oh good!
Montale Orchid Powder for a breezy, sunny day. Taking it easy as I’m sore from yoga yesterday.
I hope it’s not too bad. Sometimes I like a little sore, it’s reminded me that I’ve done something good for my body.
Thunked my sample of Chanel Venise.
We got our first dusting of snow overnight. There was still a little coming down when I drove to work. I passed a guy in his miata, top down. Seriously. People are strange.
He is very optimistic
Ha!? that’s one way to put it.?
I think you smell sooo good. Regarding the Miata, people never cease to amaze me.
Thanks!
Yeah, me neither, it did give me a chuckle on my way to work though.
Real snow here too. Grass accumulation but still…
People are just odd, myself included.
Did it turn to sleet or rain? The radar looks terrible, just a big blob over the lower half of my state, the lake, and Michigan.
I don’t think you’re odd.☺️
It was mixed with rain, but really disgustingly gloomy. My local weather team is giving their winter predictions tonight. They were way off last year though.
One of my coworkers follows a weather blogger and he has predicted a mild winter.??Maybe Mother Nature realizes 2020 has already sucked enough.?
Maybe the Miata driver was a skier or snowboarder who is ready for the snow to be flying in his face? ?
Solid hypothesis.
Carner Barcelona Palo Santo today, and I’ve already refreshed it once. My decant is nearly gone, and I hope Santa brings me a bottle of this loveliness.
Thanks for the encouragement yesterday, y’all. I think the ship is pointed north again, thanks to you fine folks. ❤️
I only got to try this once and it was really beautiful but stayed soooo close to my skin I had to hold my wrist right next to my most to smell it. It wasn’t just nose blindness cos I checked with others and they confirmed it. I think my skin just dampens a lot of perfumes.
It stays pretty close on me too, Merlin. The mood of it is quiet, so that works for me.
Yes, very calming!
So, so milky rich!
I gave Santa quite the list of FBs I’d like haha. Hopefully he comes through with one.
Hugs!
Spinoza is one of my favorite philosophers. I was kind of in love with him for a time during graduate school and thought he offered the true best way to live. Now I still admire him but feel he is too austere and his Stoicism isn’t really achievable: “I have made a ceaseless effort not to ridicule, not to bewail, not to scorn human actions, but to understand them.” I prefer a philosophy with more love in it.
We’re having a series of gray days, but it’s unseasonably warm here still. When oh when will I be able to wear that brand-new soft jade-green cashmere V-neck sweater? I always fall for the sales on these lovely items and then regret having so few opportunities to wear them. Sigh.
I just got a new FB purchase from Luckyscent that I will wear on Friday along with some excellent and varied Zoologist samples including two I hadn’t yet tried, Musk Deer and Koala. Naturally I put one on each arm to sample. Musk Deer is not at all what I expected, as it’s so light and floral. Very pretty and soft. I am not usually a musk fan but this is quite appealing. Koala is green and interesting, more fresh than I expected; I must give it more of a go to form any opinion. They also threw in Squid and Hyrax and Bee, so I must have triggered the thought “Throw the weird ones at her!” Lol!
I am planning to cook some nice traditional thingsThursday–already shopped–and am delivering them to two friends I usually have the holiday with. Better this than nothing. I do love cooking for other people. One of my dishes is a turkey tenderloin that is so good. I’ll share the recipe below. This is if you’re having a small Thanksgiving.
Here’s the recipe. I do it in the oven not on the grill, but am sure it would be good that way too. It’s incredibly good–everybody loves it.

Thank you so much for sharing this recipe! We’re having pasta casserole on Thursday (I got outvoted), but I’ll keep this handy for next week.
Do you have a pasta casserole recipe?
Yea, but I must confess I haven’t tried it yet. It’s supposed to be a big hit on Reddit, so that works for me. I’m making half a recipe of it:

If you try it, let me know how it turns out! I’ll do the same.
I’m going to try it!
I’m not really familiar with Spinoza’s work but given that he was called a heretic and ostracised by his community I’m not that surprised by his attitude to people. Personally I have always favoured dogs as a species…
I think your weather will get cold this weekend Calypso – I know because I checked as I prepare to make the drive down to the great state of Texas.
Congrats on your new FB!
Yasmina, are you moving down here permanently, or just for the season, if you don’t mind my asking? There are three NSTers in the Houston area that I know of, and we’ve met a few times to sniff and have lunch. That’s of course not feasible now, but we could try to have a Zoom meeting and chat if you’re so inclined. ?
Alas only temporarily! But I would be so excited to have a Zoom perfumista session. I have never met anyone from NST although I talk to ppl here more regularly then I do offline friends
That would be so fun! I’m in!
Oh, that is awesome! I’m nervous around technology + people, but will try to get a Zoom training session under my belt and set up a meet!
If there are any other southwest Texas folks out there who are interested in joining in, please let me know!
I’d swap your warm weather for some of the chilly days I’ve had recently!
Stared the day in habit rouge, then sprayed Jeux de peau after, since I couldn’t detect habit rouge anymore. Love both of those!
You smelled wonderful in Habit Rouge. Haven’t sniffed JdP yet!
A bit sad that South Africa did not get the Turmeric Latte body spray. On the other hand, Twilight doesn’t work for me so maybe the tonka in Turmeric Latte would also be too much… I like all the notes in Twilight but somehow not the full effect ??♀️
It’s nearly midnight here and Iv morphed from SMN’s Vetiver to SMN Vaniglia in the evening to Apres La Mousson for a lighter, breezier night.
The Turmeric Latte is fantastic ?.
I am testing Oud Praline from the Pierre Herme collaboration with L’occitane. I really like it and have been getting compliments from mr. Yasmina all day.
It smells like a smoky chai latte.
I am now curious to try others from this collaboration. I like the concept of combining taste and smell (Pierre Herme is apparently a patisserie)
Smoky chai latte sounds great.
I finished up my Thanksgiving grocery shopping today. What a relief! The Wegman’s I go to wasn’t really crowded in either the parking lot or the store itself. Still no Tater Tots to be found in my area. I wonder if people are making those for Thanksgiving instead of mashed potatoes? ?
SOTD = Divine EdP by Divine, from the sample stash. Gorgeous!!!
Good job! Now we just have to do the cooking part ???
Thanksgiving cooking started tonight, with a bunch of sauteed mushrooms. Those will go into the broccoli casserole and the dressing/stuffing. ?
Hmm….maybe people are opting for tater tot casserole this year.??
I just wanted some to go with a bowl of chili!
Omg, that sounds wonderful.
I was going to buy tator tots the other day, but all the bags were smushed and frozen rock solid.
(insert sad face). That’s no good at all.
I did get some waffle fries from the frozen foods section today. Those will do in a pinch.
Well, you could fry the smush in a pan and call it hash browns….
Wegmans! I love Wegmans.
They have some of the best produce around.
Tater Tots have a moment, maybe? That’s intriguing as to why stores are out. If you really need them, perhaps try a coop and maybe there will be some pricey organic ones! Is that Divine a vintage fragrance!? Sounds great.
Some of the weirdest things are out where I am. Besides Tater Tots, there was a run on frozen broccoli. Plenty of frozen peas and green beans, though.
Divine is from 1986. Not sure if that is considered vintage. To me, it smells like a voluptuous honeyed rose with some va-va-voom!
I’m thinking of trying my own – thick mashed potatoes, rolled into 1″ cylinders and chilled; then coated lightly with flour/beaten egg/panko crumbs, allowed to drip dry a bit and re-chilled; then pan-fry or bake. My daughter has an air fryer, which would probably be the right technique. One of our local restaurants did something like this pre-plague and they were to die for.
Wow!
Guess where I got tater tots? Target! It’s not even for Thanksgiving. I wanted to try out my itty bitty 2-quart air fryer. Mind you, I also have a 5 or 6 quart air fryer, still in the box and I am too lazy to turn the box to check the size.
Thanks for the Tar-zhay tip! We’ll see if I feel any ambition to check there later on this week. But NOT on Black Friday!
Lol! At the too lazy to turn the box! I totally get it?
Joined the Adam Levine party today. And, as was noted, this stuff is pretty potent. And good. I struggled with jasmine when I was younger, but this one works well.
Got all the fixings for my turkey stuffing, mashed potatoes and some sort of yam dish that I think I will make up as I go along. I might mix up some brown sugar, apple cider syrup, bourbon and butter as a glaze. I have been making the same herbed stuffing from a Bon Appétit recipe for something like 25 years. I’m boring that way.
And now I’m knitting and watching a Hallmark movie I recorded. I think it speeds up my gray hairs coming in…
I don’t remember smelling jasmine when I tried Adam Levine. Curiouser and curiouser!
I didn’t either in previous wearings. Today I did.
I didn’t either. I want to buy it now and join the club!
I had a container of large cubed butternut squash and I changed my mind when I got to the checkout lane.
Have fun preparing and eating your feast!
Butternut squash, apples and currants is tasty,
Yay, Adam Levine! And you triggered a Thanksgiving flashback: the first time my husband and I hosted my parents and sibs, the year after our wedding, I did an entire Bon Appetit Thanksgiving menu. It was divine! I wonder if the stuffing I made was the same as yours? I switch around recipes (and I haven’t actually stuffed a bird in years, I bake the “stuffing” separately, but I still call it that).
Sotd Shalimar Souffle Intense for work; then home and Cinnabar parfum from a vintage-ish mini. Last year I tried the new bottle version of Cinnabar and I thought it smelled wonderful. Hope everyone is having fun with their feast Day celebrations!
How is the Souffle Intense?
I enjoy it very much. I have not quite figured out the nuanced variations on its take on Shalimar, (a sweet and a smoky vanilla, but maybe some incense?) but it definitely holds its own with the versions I know of. It is quite reasonably priced on FragNet, with the 33-or 37% coupons that pop up. The bottle is lovely, too.
LizzieB, I’d be happy to send you my decant of Soufflé Intense. Just drop me a line my NST username at gmail.
I went ahead and ordered vintage Patou 1000, EDT and also was able to find a sealed flacon of Joy extrait on evil bay. Both of these together were right around $100. The deals are still out there but I would not wait.
Nice finds! Vintage Patou 1000 is amazing.
I was just going to say that about vintage Joy 🙂
Late to the party but still made it!
SOTD = BDK Wood Jasmin
Woody plum incense, no jasmine that I can detect! Nice, but not nice enough for a FB.

LisaD and Annie Perfumes mentioned the Sniffapalooza x Scotch Porter event and I participated as well. The sample set was a generous 4 x 15mL!!! My favorite out of the bunch was Miami Duppy – fabulously gourmand! Here’s a post I made on IG:

In other news, I neglected to mention that on Sunday I was able to donate some family-sized appliances and equipment I no longer use: family-sized versions of a steamer / rice cooker and Crock Pot, a Keurig machine (still works but I switched to a smaller version) and air popcorn popper (I have a kettle microwave contraption which I haven’t used but plan to experiment this weekend). Plus a TJ’s brown bag worth of stuff. It’s not much but somehow, I feel lighter. Let’s see what I end up doing the rest of the week.
Today is my Friday ? and I am looking forward to some relaxing time although I am on call.
Wish me luck tomorrow as I navigate the NJ Auto Inspection lanes.
Go get ’em! ?
Good luck tomorrow!
Today was Confessions of a Garden Gnome on left arm, No 19 on right.
Got a new computer set up from work today, two giant monitors and a souped up machine that dashed well better not stall on me like my old one. Excited to put it to the test tomorrow.
I just adore the name of that one! Every year I ask myself why I don’t own it!!
You smell great I know!
Late today. I will crawl into bed and read all these comments now. It’s one of my. favorite past times to unwind.
Today: Spanish Leather by SMN with Chanel No 22 on top. I am going for the poor girl’s Cuir de Russie.
I did 4 loaves of sourdough bread today then after a lunch date with hubby I went out to buy my ingredients later for my 2 apple pies.
It’s time for ‘Happy Holidays’ to all.
Glad to see another SMN fan! I’m a devotee of their Nostalgia 😀
Good morning, since it’s Wednesday now on the East Coast. Before I forget, I hope that those who celebrate Thanksgiving this Thursday have a happy one.
It’s been such a strange year, and I’ll miss seeing my brother and sister-in-law over the holidays this year, but I told my brother that we could do Christmas in July 2021 or something, when hopefully by that time we will have been able to get vaccinated against Covid-19 and life is back to more like normal. (*fingers crossed*)
I don’t think I commented Monday? On Monday, Mom and I made it to the local Boscov’s. It’s a department store in the tri-state area. I’d said, “I have some energy now, and it’s probably the only time this year that I’ll feel like shopping. Let’s stop there.”
Mom was surprised, but pleased. I found a new purse, because the strap on mine had broken, so I was happy about that. We went through petites, and I pointed out the selection of cardigan sweaters to Mom. She’s been looking for cardigans for ages, and we haven’t seen them. I guess they’re trendy again now? “But we’re shopping for you,” Mom said. She ended up getting a coral-colored cardigan with pearl-like buttons. Then she surprised me by wandering off into the racks of sweatshirts with cute and/or holiday designs on the front and getting way carried away.
“Don’t even look at the racks of petite Alfred Dunner clothes right now,” I said to her. “You can come back another time. I’m going to go look at coats.” That was the original thing we had gone in for, since the zipper on my old winter coat is broken in such a way that I would have needed to have it taken out and a new zipper put in. We found a very big, and very warm, puffy winter coat for me.
Mom was extremely happy that I had found a good warm winter coat. “That can be your birthday present from me,” she said. Mom meant my birthday this year, 2020, which was in April(!). It’s very mother-like to be happy that one’s child has a warm coat, I suppose. Having it be a very belated birthday present is unique to my mother, though, I’m pretty sure. lol. “Well, I wasn’t going to get you books,” Mom said. She realizes that I do plenty as far as getting books and garden plants and such as presents for myself. 😀
I got the travel-size Atelier Cologne Love Osmanthus spray today, and the Jeffrey Dame Labdanum Doux. 50 ml of the latter seems like more than I’ll ever use, but I like it, fortunately for a blind buy. I also got JD samples: Musc neutre, which I like quite a bit; Mimosa Mixte femme, which extremely quickly became a “love” and a lemming when I tried a dab of that; and two samples of Singularity Woman. On Thursday night(?) or whenever it was that I did late-night shopping, I’d seen a 100-ml bottle of Mimosa Mixte, but that seemed like over twice as much of one kind of perfume than I’d ever use.
Happy holidays, folks!
I love your description of your shopping trip with your mom! And lol, her comment about not buying you books! That’s something my late mother would have said to me too. I miss those kinds of interactions with her, though her passing, in her 80s, was really a merciful release. Thanks for the chuckle!
