Portland, Oregon independent bookstore Powell's Books will launch a limited edition fragrance, Powell's. The fragrance is packaged in a faux book and aims to capture the scent of a bookstore.
Like the crimson rhododendrons in Rebecca, the heady fragrance of old paper creates an atmosphere ripe with mood and possibility. Invoking a labyrinth of books; secret libraries; ancient scrolls; and cognac swilled by philosopher-kings, Powell’s by Powell’s delivers the wearer to a place of wonder, discovery, and magic heretofore only known in literature.
This scent contains the lives of countless heroes and heroines. Apply to the pulse points when seeking sensory succor or a brush with immortality.
Notes for the unisex fragrance include wood, violet and bibliochor.
Powell's by Powell's Books is $25 for 30 ml and can be pre-ordered now, for November delivery, at Powells.

Wow – sounds so fun, I was actually going to pre-order, but the shipping is $15. So the $25 bottle came to $41.74 with shipping and tax. Can’t quite do it. I’m only about 4 hours away – if they still have any (unlikely) when I get to Portland, I’ll get some.
So glad you said — I was actually thinking of ordering it too, because why not. It does say qualifying orders ship free, and so I think if you had $50 in your cart it would be free, but I did not verify.
I hope that’s true, because I’m going to check it right now! ?
One thing I noticed is that the free shipping is only if you are buying things that all ship at once. That’s possibly hard to pull off since this is a pre-order? There must be a way to do it, though.
If there is, it eluded me. ?
Netflix’s Rebecca is missing the rhododendrons!
😯 How could they?!?
I might actually need this perfume. Because Powell’s. Because books. Because perfume. It looks like the actual juice might be produced by Demeter, yes?
The price makes me think Demeter, but there are lots of companies that could have done this.
Down at the bottom of the page, there’s this info:
ISBN: 1110000347670
Binding: Fragrance
Publication date: 01/01/0001
Publisher: DEMETER FRAGRANCE LIBRARY
Author: Powells
So, that might help anybody who’s contemplating a purchase; seems like it could be along the lines of Demeter’s other scents.
Thank you!
Lovely, thank you!!
Ah. Thanks for the information! Appropriate enough that it’s part of a fragrance library. lol
I started wondering what the scent of “bibliochor” was. I’ll look that up at some point. I remember reading somewhere that old books develop a sort of vanilla scent from the paper aging. Some of the old books I’ve picked up here and there have more of a musty smell, but that’s a different story.
They say it ‘ships separately’ & has a special shipping rate so looks like they won’t let you combine it with anything else – I’m guessing It may ship directly from Demeter which is why they will only ship it separately from other items (?)
I feel like someone else already released a ‘book’ themed fragrance that was packaged inside a hollowed out book – no? And no I do not think it was Book by Commodity. The name is escaping me now….
There have been several, but this one comes to mind:

I was so looking forward to that one and I REALLY disliked it.
Yes – that’s the one Robin!
According to the Powell’s website, this is Demeter’s “Library” scent but it has been repurposed and repackaged and licensed to Powells.
Thanks plume!
Hopefully Powells will sell a lot of these and it will help them stay in business. That was a great marketing idea to do this.
Truly.
I placed an order. I tried to see if I can get to free shipping but as per one of Robin’s comments above, the stars have to align and I have no desire to spend a penny more than the price of the item I want just to get to free shipping.
Was it the $15 shipping or less?
Argh – that was for hajusuuri!
It was $15 for shipping and I also had to pay tax. Still new perfumath free and maybe I’ll split it.
