Happy Almost-Friday and a very happy 68th to Jeff Goldblum! (More birthdays: Franz Liszt, Doris Lessing, Robert Capa.) It's also International Stuttering Awareness Day. What fragrance are you wearing?
I'm taking floral oriental points in Ormonde Jayne Ta'if.
Reminder: on 10/23, wear a floriental, if you have one.
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try (but frequently fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

A tip for anyone who wants to check Michael Edwards’ classifications: go to fragrances of the world, use the “match my fragrance” tool, and enter your scent. Below, you will get recommendations in the same category.
https://www.fragrancesoftheworld.com/FragranceWheel/FragranceMatch
So for instance, if I enter Ta’if, I am recommended 4 other “floral oriental classical” fragrances.
Or, of course, buy his book and you’ll have the complete lists 🙂
Thanks for the link Robin!
De nada. I probably should have been more clear — it won’t get you a usable list, it will just allow you to confirm a fragrance classification.
wah! I’ve been doing it wrong all week! Shalimar is an oriental, not fl-oriental 🙂
I am sorry. I probably should have given more info on Monday. But hey, you smelled great all week!
I was kidding – you have no responsibility to provide background research to lazy perfumistas like me 🙂 🙂
I’ve spent some time keying in fragrances and it turns out florientals are rare in my collection.
Robin, I mentioned in yesterday’s thread (but you probably didn’t see – as it was this afternoon for me – crack of dawn for you) that he calls Artemisia a soft floral. So I feel vindicated on that front ? I wonder how Fragrantica does the designation.
And I do not know how Fragrantica classifies. I always assumed they took it from sales materials or PR or what not?
Michael Edwards smells everything, so to me he is the last word.
Oh and Merlin, I just answered your other comment from yesterday. I am late!
Thanks for the tip, I found your reply ?
Oh, endless fun! Thanks for posting the website – apparently everything I like is “woody” in some fashion. Hmm.
And as I promised Jalapeno, reviews of the Fastachi nut butters.
The pistachio is delicious but is JUST pistachio, unlike most pistachio spreads which have salt, sugar, olive oil, etc. I do love it but I sprinkle a little sea salt on it, it is too bland otherwise. With salt, wonderful.
The “mixed nut” butter has everything – hazelnuts, pecans, pistachio, peanut, walnut, almond, and it is really really good. I had some on a buckwheat banana walnut pancake and it was amazing, much better than plain peanut butter.
I would order both of these again but I was a little disappointed that they come in plastic jars, so possibly I will shop around.
And if anyone knows a great source of nut butters, do speak up.
NuttZo is pretty good, but it’s a nut and seed butter, so not sure if it counts.
Going to have to try some of these. The Manna nut butters are really good/flavorful, but also come in plastic containers.
? wowza.
Many thanks, Robin! ??
Irresistible by Givenchy
In a NYC outfit, all black today. Had a mani pedi yesterday, so I am wearing Fire by Chanel, a nice red. My first mani since February.
Cream of Earl Grey tea
PS
Has anyone tried Shalimar, Philtre de Parfum yet?
Curious about the Philtre as well.
By the way, for fellow lipstick people: yesterday received my 1st-ever Lisa Eldridge purchase, a tube of lip gloss in color Myth. So far, haven’t been tempted by the lipsticks–they look a bit too matte & intense for my personal preference.
When I opened the gloss, was afraid it might be too dark, but upon (sparing) application, it’s a really nice mulberry with decent staying power for a gloss.
Oh galbanumgal I have one in my basket! These look lovely. And the glosses are ALREADY SOLD OUT! I have velvet in the box. Do you use Pat McGrath and how do they compare if so. I adore her products and actually use them all up. These seem very similar to me so they should be wonderful.
Only have a couple of the McGrath lipsticks in Luxetrance (Sorry not Sorry is a go-to). Don’t think I’ve tried the PMG glosses.
Ordering from Eldridge’s site is annoying, as everything sells out so quickly!
I’m wearing Nahema for the first time this year. I never seem to think of it when considering which Guerlain to wear. Points for the CP and it is gorgeous.
Twins!
Nahema is gorgeous, you smell wonderful ?
Oh, I’m going to twin you! Thanks for the inspo.
You do smell gorgeous!
You smell opulent, I wore it Tuesday, parfum de toilette, and it’s quite fruity on my skin.
Plush is another good descriptor for Nahema.
I’m in 1725 by Histoires de Parfums. It’s aromatic fougere with heliotrope, sweet almonds and vanilla so no CP points today.
I forgot about that Michael Edwards’ website, althugh I used it before. I have checked my previous choices. According to Edwards, I have not worn a single floriental this week. ?
Well, at least today I am in a true floriental – Guerlain Nahema EDP. ?
It used to be a more consumer oriented site, now it looks like they’re just using it to sell the app to stores.
And c you smell gorgeous as well! I do love Nahema.
Nice to know about Nahema… I have a sample of that one!
Strong coffee and I think I will join you Robin in Ta’if.
Chilly again today.
I brewed tea, but should of went with coffee
Then perhaps I will have to join you in strong coffee, ha!
Vintage Coco edt today so full CP points. I smell SO good 🙂
You do!
Ohhh, you smell glorious! Twins!
Smelling wonderful!
Today’s SOTD is Chanel’s Coco, lotion and perfume.
I broke down and made pancakes, with bananas and Nutella – I’m being very naughty.
About to head out for a four-mile walk with a friend in GG park.
The Fog layer has returned to SF, it’ll be a gorgeous walk! Previously, we saw hawks, owls, an egret, and a blue heron. 🙂
Your pancakes sound fabulous. I love Nutella but don’t buy it, because I find it so irresistible.
It is difficult to resist!
Yes, those pancakes do sound delicious! And you smell great!
Was in the dry down of Ubar this morning. Still waiting on a Barkbox and made an Amazon Prime Pantry order last night. Making a grocery list for tomorrow and a little chore list. On Friday I do my grocery shopping and start my little chores list so the chores are not so overwhelming on Saturday. I have 4 no spend days in a week and it’s a no spend day today. Wearing a dab of LADDM for this afternoon while I am at work.
Having just paid a cc bill, maybe I need “no spend” days, too….
I’m trying Parle Moi de Parfum’s Milky Musc by Michel Almairac from a sample. To my nose this is a soft sandalwood, I really don’t get any musk. It reminds me of Lumiere Blanche.
Rain, rain, and more rain. ? I could hear it all night, the kind of soft, gentle rain that is good for sleeping, but now it’s day and I’m ready for it to go away!
Oh no, I hate that sort of dreary weather. One good thing about Houston, despite our terrible heat, is that it’s almost always sunny. I wrote a response just now to your post from yesterday.
This is the sort of weather that wears on a person.? I’ve been eyeing those sunrise alarm clocks on amazon just wanting to get some extra light in my day.
I hadn’t heard of that town, but I have been to Iron Mountain.
Thanks for the review. I was curious about that one.
Phooey on the dreary weather!
Chanel La Pausa.
Today I am going with my daughter for her wedding dress fitting 🙂
La Pausa seems like a good Mother of the Bride scent.
Oh fun!? congrats!
Enjoy!
Have fun! You smell great!
Happy times with your daughter.
La Pausa is perfect!
Awwwwwwwwwwwwwww! How wonderful!
And just like that * another week has almost gone by! I’m not used to a new schedule yet, and this week is a total wash since I’m traveling.
But I did bring a few samples with me, and today I’m wearing the last couple of drops that I eked out of a vial of Oeillères by Robert Greco. So, I’m close, in a “soft oriental.”
I think he should create a new category called “dirty oriental.” Would fit this one perfectly! Skank lovers – check it out if you haven’t yet. ?
Is it business travel? If yes, I will just mention that it takes someone 2 heartbeats away from the CEO to approve business travel.
Oh no, it’s personal. We are visiting my MIL, who is 86 and in the last stages of ALS. Ordinarily, I would not think of traveling right now, but this seemed important enough to warrant one last visit.
I am wearing Memoize Luxuria today, and to me, it is gross. Loud chemical flowers drowning in sugar. I tried to wash it off, but it won’t leave!
I like the brand’s Superbia (these names , though!) quite a bit, so perhaps this would be someone else’s cup of tea.
Seconding lovestosmellgood’s question: has anyone tried the shalimar philtre?
Ugh, sorry about your scrubber!
Today I am wearing Meo Fusciuni’s Spirito. I truly wish some of the on-line perfume shops in the USA would pick up his line. All are ingenious and unusual, long-lasting and beautifully made. I have most of his perfumes (they are all extraits) and am waiting for his newest one, which I ordered over a week ago, but know I won’t receive it for several more weeks at the least. It comes straight from Sicily and from customs goes to the UK before finally arriving into the USA. If you go to his direct website, he is looking for perfume shops on-line or actual shops to carry his line. I hope it will be picked up by someone (Luckyscent I’m looking at you).
I could get on board with perfume from Sicily!
Or contact Ann at Indigo Perfumery.
You are right, he is a genius! I am currently contemplating buying either 3rd travel note (Terza nota di viaggio) or L’Oblio. If you have them, which one do you recommend?
Smelling great in SL La Fille de Berlin for the cp.
Another cloudy, but warm day. No complaints! Coffee and a cider apple donut to regain energy before a work zoom meeting.
Happy almost Friday! ?
I was late to see your great news about employee of the year. Congratulations!
Oh! It wasn’t me, but Therabbitsflower! So passing your comment to her!
You smell wonderful!
Thank you! ?
Would you believe that I have never tried a cider apple donut???
??
non compliant in Cuir de Nacre. I’m headed to the hairdresser (first time since December!), and I wanted to a scent that says: “this woman needs a very killer haircut” without choking out the salon. Let’s see – I am always hopelessly optimistic (“this haircut will be the one!”) when it comes to going to a new salon, and this one comes highly recommended.
Good luck at the salon.
Let us know if the scent fulfills it’s function ?
Second that. I love that as a perfume filter.
Good luck! Got a text from my hairdresser that she is switching to another salon in town. I followed her from a previous salon and I will follow her again!
And I would like to qualify my comment that this will be the third salon in 2 decades so we’re doing well ?
My new person is also my neighbor – so if this doesn’t go well – yikes! But she comes highly recommended.
Fingers crossed that your latest haircut adventure turns out well!
I’m in the drydown of Parfum Sacré, this is still going strong as usual, fragrantica: spicy oriental, me: floral oriental with the rose. Off to check Michael Edwards, thank you Robin.
Anyway, adore it, it is very plush (vintage peppercorn or clock bottle, unsure of the current formulation).
Well we know it is an oriental, and we know it has flowers 🙂
Wearing Dior Ambre Nuit today. I may do Ta’if tomorrow. Or Coco.
Robin, you smell fantastic!
Ambre Nuit is a friend’s all-time favourite.
I may do Ta’if again! Or Datura Noir, we’ll see.
Not long before the world went mad I discovered a love of commercial fruity florals – especially ones that make me feel a bit like a bubble-head. So today I’m in Salvatore Farragama’s Amo which both Fragrantica AND Michael Edwards call a floral oriental. Notes list jasmine but my nose only finds Campari, fruit and vanilla.
Amo sounds delicious! 🙂
My other favourite is gourmands so my gluttony is coming out in my perfume taste!
Campari, fruit and vanilla really does sound good.
I haven’t tasted Campari but am guessing I would like it! The fruits are listed as blackcurrant and rhubarb. It’s a really joyful and comforting scent.
SotD = Mohur Extrait, roses, spices and sandalwood, seems oriental to me, even tho Michael Edwards appears to label it a classic rose. :-), whatever, I smell fabulous, if I do say so myself. My bottle is almost empty – contemplating a bottle of POAL instead of replacing this right away, as adorable hubby like POAL better than this. This he doesn’t notice, POAL he always comments, You smell good, I like that one. Easier on the pocket book, and stay at home entourage approval, seems like an easy choice. But, I just love this. What if all the bottles are gone by the time I am ready to purchase it again? Ah, such first world problems, eh? I need to not be so greedy. For the price of this, I can get a bottle of POAL and a bottle Vivacious, I think….
Two nice bottles for the price of one? Excellent perfume math…
Perfume math! Lol!
Decisions, decisions. Those all sound like excellent choices.
Thank you for the encouragement!
Fragrance: Gap Lavender Tea, categorized Fougere Oriental by Fragrantica, where they say the components are lavender, tea, amber and vanilla. I guess I can agree with that, although I don’t specifically smell vanilla. It was released in 2007, and I bought it as soon as I ran across it; it’s probably aged a bit.
I’m going to finally check out the Floral Oriental page on Fragrantica to see what I’ve got in that arena.
Tea: organic breakfast blend (black) by Good and Gather at Target. I’m not enough of a tea expert to weigh in on the quality. It’s a low-effort cup of black tea, which is all I was looking for.
Sometimes low effort is the most important thing 🙂
No CP again, I don’t seen to like florientals. But I had a craving for incense and wore 5 sprays of Larmes de desert.
Took a nice walk through our town after work to have a look at the fall colors in our park. So good to be outside after wearing a mask at work for hours…
Think I will go for a walk now, as the rains will definitely be back by tomorrow.
Am a big mess of scents, as I received a package with a bunch of Ajmal samples. The woody one seems to be winning out.
Fun!
I had a terrible stutter as a kid and had to go to speech therapy where it was decided that being left handed was the cause/problem. So, as well as doing speech exercises I had to be converted to a right handed person. I was always offered objects to my right hand, stir cake mixtures with my right hand, pour water and was helped to write ( I was about four at the time) with my right hand. They kind of forgot about my feet which stayed left footed for ages. Later, it was thought my stutter may have been caused by too many house changes and disruptions. Anyway, i still have trouble with three or more syllables! Wearing YSL Libre Intense still with a bit of Fleur de Citronierre. Rabbit plague at the cemetery. First briar roses are smelling jammy.
I know it’s largely ignorance that informed these strategies but I also always think there must have been some malice wrapped up in it. What do you think?
No, I don’t think malice played a role. Piano lessons were far more traumatic!
I mentioned to my mother some years ago that part of the reason I hadn’t enjoyed piano is that the teacher was quite scary. Her reply ‘oh, did you also find her scary? So did I!’ ?
And what are you now, handed-wise? Wondering if you switched back or were truly converted for life.
My MIL and her brother were both left-handed and forced to convert.
Candle news: Almost done burning a B&BW Hot Cocoa & Scream candle which has burned very evenly w/ no tunneling and good throw. Very good performance w/ no complaints…haven’t burned any of their candles in a few years and have 2 more waiting in the wings.
Perfume news: Wearing Note Vanillee today. Bought 2 discovery sets on Luckyscent last night…one from Une Nuit Nomade (which had been out of stock for a while) which has a few vanillas I am looking to sample and the other from Les Indemodables which I have tried a few of and thought they were very well done. They have a new vanilla included in the set…Vanille Havane which I am eager to try too. 🙂
Personal news: had a good annual review at work which justified the Discovery Set acquisitions above. 😉 And I am still within my perfume budget for this year. Also up for a promotion at work which I should hear back by tomorrow perhaps. It’s exciting but more work/responsibility of course. Work-related achievements/news always make miss my parents even more as I can’t share it w/ them. 🙁 Spouses/SOs, friends and even your kids are happy for you but there’s nothing like telling your mom or dad you got an A on your book report or have a new title. Children always want to make their parents proud.♥️
Congratulations on the good review! Good luck on the promotion!
Seconding–nice to hear good news.
Wonderful news. And so true about parents. A child’s happiness and achievements seem to flow into their hearts like blood
Awesome news!
SOTD = Tom Ford Noir Pour Femme
I believe I saw this categorized as an oriental floral. The Michael Edwards Match My Perfume tags it as Oriental. Close enough. I checked tomorrow’s and was gobsmacked when it got many many matches. Eh?
There’s still time to join the Puredistance Rubikona sample giveaway @hajusuuri (U.S. only); you can also participate via Lucas’ and Undina’s blogs.

In other news, and I will repeat this again in the next few weeks, Medicare Open Enrollment is upon us. Many of you are aware of what happened to my mom. Although it ended with a favorable $ outcome (not a settlement but getting out of pocket costs back for wrongful denial), in hindsight, we should have paid more attention to her choices. She was smart but was powerless to perform any analysis of the pros and cons of switching. There are many TV ads touting “You may be eligible for FREE this that blah blah. Call this number to speak to someone to check your eligibility for Medicare Advantage.” I don’t know what will make someone not eligible BUT, be very very careful. Please don’t be seduced by the lower cost of Medicare Advantage (Part C). Unless you KNOW you will continue to be healthy and nothing catastrophic will happen to you or your loved ones if you are helping them, stick to the traditional plan Part A and Part B and get medigap. Part D for drugs comes with both plans. The profit motive for Medicare Advantage is EXTREMELY high; don’t become a victim. I wouldn’t be surprised if some of the sub-acute rehab facilities are in cahoots with Medicare Advantage as many are also for profit. Please note that I am not suggesting Part A and Part B will not deny coverage but Medicare Advantage, with its profit motive, has incentives to deny by default and hope there is no dispute or appeal. We appealed and it took 10 months from 1st appeal to getting the check on hand; just imagine if we needed the funds to settle her affairs.
You smell great!
Thank you!
Wow, Thank You Hajusuuri! This subject is sadly on my radar.
This is really important information! I was not aware.
Do try to find out more. Provider profit is a very attractive motivator for the Medicare Advantage companies.
??!
Thanks!
SotD = Luci ed Ombre
It’s cloudy and cool here today, so lights and shadows it is.
Feeling curious, Fragrantica lists this one as a woody chypre. Well, ok then. I think of it as all BWF all the time, though it is woody. Most of my favorite scents are built on woody, vanilla, or woody-vanilla notes.
I looked at Michael Edwards’ site, it matched Luci ed Ombre to Bodicea’s Madonna, which Fragrantica says is a Oriental Floral. Madonna has a beautiful bottle, and now I really want to smell it.
Someone please throw me a rope, I’ve fallen down a rabbit hole and I can’t get out. 😉
Happy Thursday, everyone! And happy b-day to Mr. Goldblum. I watched him (plus Robin Williams) last night in Man of the Year. It was fun to see them on screen, though never together.
I find it strange that the site matches up – not to best known, most classical or most popular – but rather to most recent releases.
If that site is for retail outlets, it makes sense. Sell the latest stuff…
Exactly. It is not geared to consumers. I look at the matches only to confirm the family.
It works to sell the latest directly to consumers – you like x – so you should check out y… I was surprised there aren’t links to online shops.
yes, I was surprised at the matches I got from Michael Edwards’ site. It is nice to see what’s new, though, heh heh. 🙂
Whatever its classification, Luci ed Ombre is very good. Just sprayed a little on after reading your comment. Scent 3 of the day!
yay yay yay! 3 cheers for you and Luci ed Ombre. I hope it made your day more beautiful. 🙂
Tiffanie for a long time Luci ed Ombre was on my radar. I am happy to see it mentioned here. Is it a favorite?
It is A Big Favorite 🙂 a perfume I think I will love for a long time to come.
I’m fond of scents with these notes – white flowers, incense, woods – and in this style – it’s not quite an everything but the kitchen sink perfume, though it feels close, and that’s why I like it. Big enough but not Loud.
It’s not the same at all, but Luci ed Ombre reminds me of the feeling I have when I wear vintage Oscar by Oscar de la Renta, also 24 Faubourg.
It’s a favorite for me, too. It didn’t jump out when I first sniffed my sample. And then I found myself reaching for it, and reaching for it, and reaching for it—boom! FB acquired.
SOTD is Dryad – oh, how I love this one!
You smell great!
Prada IdIA this morning.
Not sure I am CP complaint.
I am having fun pursuing my cabinet for this CP.
I do have a few that have already been mentioned and am searching for a new contributor for the day! No luck yet.
I did discover that I am much more of an oriental & floriental fan than I’d originally thought!
What a gorgeous fall day we have here. I hope the same for you all.
Infusion de Iris Absolue is listed as floral oriental on Fragrantica. The original edp – my favourite- is not (which makes sense, I guess!)
I’m clearly geeking out over the classification system ?
I am doing my happy dance! I just looked it up and all I found was an ‘ oriental -woody’ description!
Thank You Merlin!!!
Ahhhh I see now. Whew! I just made it ?
I’m wearing Bottega Veneta today, and rose scented hand cream. The rose has taken over the leather.
Twice this week, Rob Lowe has been in my dreams. Young and old versions. I never even had a crush on him back in the day. If I was going to pick a brat packer, it would have been Emilio Estevez. So now I’m trying to figure out what/who Mr. Lowe is representing. I take my dreams way to seriously, lol.
Good luck figuring that one out!
Maybe you watched a film with Rob Lowe in it?
Perhaps saw one of his ads for Atkins bars (think there’s one about pandemic pounds), and it seeped into your subconscious!
Lolol…too funny. I was never into Rob but he has aged well. My dream analysis is that maybe you watched The West Wing at some point and that it is close to Election Day. So maybe this dream of Rob is a reminder to vote November 3rd.
(Not to get politcal at all..just strictly dream analysis lol). Haha.
Never watched The West Wing, however.. You reminded me that the other day I was thinking of Stephen Kings The Stand as I was reminded of it by current events. Rob Lowe was in the movie. I would much prefer Gary Senise in my dreams though. Lol
He was interviewed recently, I can’t recall right now which one, but he was very funny and witty I’d heard. Maybe that?
That rose lotion you have MUST be potent if it is overpowering Bottega Veneta! That one requires all day commitment from me if I pick it!
It’s Loccitane. It’s heavily scented, and reminds me of Ysl Paris.
I’m not really a floral oriental person. Perfumes like Coco wear me.
In TL Silk Way. Musky woody?
I finally have a book recommendation: Richard Russo’s Trajectory. Not a novel, but four longish short stories. Really well written.
I have an endless to-do list and ZERO motivation to do any of it. And these are must do’s like taxes and making financial decisions that I’ve been ignoring for a while. I feel as though I’m waiting for my better, more adult self to show up and take charge.
I’ve been wanting to get back to Silk Way. I have and thought it was so light and airy when I first tried it but it has its fans so I want to circle back.
It is like nothing else that I have. Light and airy, but not sweet or girly. Musky, but neither clean nor dirty. It lasts on skin but isn’t huge. I think I’m not a floriental person, because I’m never put together enough to carry it off. Silk Way suits me, strangely.
That’s an interesting idea – might explain why I have fewer florientals than I expected to – and why I reach for the ones I have less than others…
Partially aligning with the CP – Ormond Jayne Orris Noir is described as an Oriental Spicy on Fragrantica.
Plus, we are cousins 🙂
I am solidly with the CP this morning in Organza. I got a huge bottle at one of the Portland swap events and I’ve only worn it a few times. I like it but I think my heart belongs to the flanker sister, Organza Indecence.
OI is just better, that’s all 😉
Only points I can claim for today’s choice are those for re-visiting forgotten samples: biehl parfumkunstwerke mb03. Not bad, just meh — kind of surprising for Mark Buxton, I think?
I’ve been trying to pay some attention to the sample stash lately.
And… the streak of weird October weather continues for me. Fog and rain in the morning, bright sun in the afternoon. Still warm and muggy enough for the A/C. Or for a nice cold beer with dinner! ?
SOTD = L’Artisan Passage d’Enfer, from the sample stash. Not CP compliant, but it was what I wanted to wear today.
Yay for wearing what you want!
Yep! One should not argue with what the nose wants! ?
It IS weird, isn’t it? I took a walk in the late afternoon today and it was practically hot! I came in, scrubbed down, cooled off, and put on some Jo Malone Earl Grey and Cucumber — not what I would have imagined even wanting to wear in late October…
Your Passage d’Enfer is perfect…
Thank you! I did enjoy Passage d’Enfer quite a bit today.
It was yucky all day here and I just realized I never even checked to see if I got mail!
Floral Oriental (so says Fragrantica) in Tocca Colette today. One of my easy favs! TGIT! So glad today is my Friday! AND we are getting cooler weather this weekend. Yay!
The Tocca bottles are SO pretty!
I made the mistake of trying to sniff all of the one day, and now I that the impression they all smell alike! What does the one you are wearing smell like. I think the bottles are cute. I should try to figure out if there is one I love.
Meredifay, I did the same thing and it had the same effect!
They must all have the same base or something. 🙂
Have you tried Byredo Gypsy Water? That’s what Colette smells like to me!
Anne Klein 2 for me for the CP! Then I switched over to Cristalle in the afternoon.
