Saturday is National Relaxation Day, conveniently enough. We're relaxing with our usual open thread poll. Talk about anything you like — the fragrance you’re wearing today, your most relaxing fragrance, whatever.
Or, ask a question about fragrance, then see if anyone else has asked a question that you can answer…

Yay for the weekend!
My parents came back from their week at the seaside this afternoon.
It’s another hot day in my area so I’m refreshing myself with occasional spritzes of Yuja by Jo Malone. It’s a lovely yuzu scent but I wish it’s best part – bitter and zesty – was extended for the already short life span of this cologne…
I think temperature will drop nicely below 30*C soon.
It was not too bad here. I ended up taking a walk to the mall and back.
Downright cool here! We actually have windows open.
Lucasai, that sounds like every Jo Malone ever: great for 20 minutes.
Yes! I only can’t complain about Mimosa & Cardamom which lasts nicely on me.
I too think JM’s are too little for too much. But I like Youth Dew, (and hot weather) sooo….but I like yuzu scent, and I’m glad you have something cool to spritz, lucasai! Our weather is hot, slightly humid, but having mild breezes that really make it perfect. I’ve been talking up the late summer bug sounds – I think most people would enjoy them if they try to notice them. They give me a sense of peace, changing gradually from different types as the day goes on.
I think I’d chose any of my Atelier Cologne over Jo Malone. But those JM can be nice sometimes.
I’m spending today indoors being grateful for AC (so sorry Californians without power!) and watching – what else – old movies. I watched Katherine Hepburn and Burt Lancaster in The Rainmaker recently and it was so good that I’m going to watch it again. I’m glad to know that I can say I’m celebrating National Relaxation Day instead of just being my usual lazy self. Sotd after a shower will be the last of my decant of Encens et Lavande. Yesterday I thunked Nicolai Vanille Tonka. Sniffle, these thunks kind of make me sad.
Ooh, I love old movies! That’s a great idea for a hot day!
Watching old movies sounds like a wonderful way to relax!
Yay for vanilla, old movies and AC!
I must watch that one because I am a huge Burt Lancaster fan. (Swoon.) I assume you have seen From Here to Eternity but if not, RUN don’t walk to do so!! That beach love scene is one of the hottest ever on film!
Yes, that’s an excellent movie although I have read that condions weren’t ideal shooting that scene and everything, like the crew and equipment, was wet and covered in sand by the time they got the take. Imho Burt is more vulnerable and therefore sexier in Rainmaker.
Burt Lancaster. Wow. Swoon worthy at any age, even in his very last film, Field of Dreams.
I love him in Elmer Gantry.
That’s a great one to watch.
Your day sounds great!
Uhh – Vanilla Tonka is a good one.
Oh I am so glad it’s Saturday. Slept so badly and have some hives breaking out. Bleech.
My purchase of Eve was supposed to be delivered last night to wear today, but the USPS is behind as we know.
I hate thinking about it being in hot vehicle to get here although this is clearly not a world issue.
Going to get an outside mani pedi today and pick up two things from Nordstrom sale.
SOTD something cool and fresh Paris Deauville I think
Sends sympathy re: delivery! Sure it’s not “foundational” but I, not saying you would, always struggle not to imagine my little perfume stewing away, perhaps seeping out….so silly. I usually have to “push my reset button” with some more active pass-time 🙂 Hope you have time for a nap after your postal person gets there!
It’s here!’my bottle of Eve is here with samples of Gardner’s Glove.
Having mani pedi outside was nice.
It’s super hot here but a little cooler where I near the water than some spots sobering outside under umbrella looking out towards Catalina was relaxing
Now onto the laundry ?
Good ol’ Saturday laundry!
Even through pandemics!
How do you like Gardener’s Glove?? Full disclosure — I love it. But don’t feel you have to agree here! Isn’t Eve beautiful? Diane St. Clair is so gifted.
Just beautiful
And Diane is so lovely, sending notes. She reminds me of Victor @ zoologist.
Yes, I have a few delayed items via USPS too! It doesn’t help that it’s a fragrance purchase I’ve been dying to get my hands on (Fendi Life Essence).
Just like the old Heinz Ketchup (with Carly Simon singing Anticipation) commercial…..
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0IobpIKshr8
Yep! USPS made me way-ay-ay-ay-ayit until Monday for a box that got into town yesterday, LOL eyeroll! But I have to say our mail has not really had any problems through all the shutdown. And I’ve had some deliveries letters and packages, that were very good.
Hope your hives get better. I love Deauville a bit more each time I wear it and that is not the case w/ all my perfumes…even (gasp) some of the vanillas.?
Gasp!
I had a not so good night of sleep too, so I can sympathize! I distinctly remember seeing 2am on my alarm clock this morning.
Hope you enjoyed your mani pedi. You smelled great.
Already been out to get the week’s groceries, got the fridge and freezer defrosted, and it is time to unwind and have a weekend. Feeling very relaxed in the 2005 relaunch of Guerlain Vega, which is in fact what you would get if Chanel No. 5 and Paco Rabanne Pour Homme had a baby: first it’s all aldehydes all the time, then an herbal fougère, then flowers, then an oriental base…. It’s confusing, which I assume is why they discontinued it, but it’s also weirdly terrific.
I have a bottle of that. I should get it out and wear it today. Thanks!
Lemming stirs in cage…
? this made me laugh
Me too!
Yesterday afternoon, post-gym shower I wore BG body cream layered under Shalimar Creamsicle, and I smelled so cheerful and tropical! Might have to do the same post-run shower this morning.
I’m considering driving off into the country today in search of local fruit and corn. I would love some tree-ripened peaches, plums (although maybe it’s too early) and fresh corn (also likely too early, but I’ve seen a few fields that look promising). I would happily buy a several dozen ears of corn to cook, sheer and freeze for fresh corn wonderfulness mid-winter.
Huh, interesting that it’s too early for corn out there. Here we say “knee high by the 4th of July” and figure it’s ready around the end of July. When is your season?
Agree, local produce is the best!
I’m not sure what the official window is, but the fields I’m driving by are just getting tassels right now. Neighbors who grow veggies in their front yards have very small ears, so my guess is they’re still a few weeks away from harvest.
Hope I can find some!
We have had great corn for a few weeks now, at least. Peaches even longer…which may be because my husband looked for peaches earlier than he looked for corn.
I’m on point with relaxation day! Kicked back on the sofa thinking of things I need to do, but without any type of plan to actually do those things.
Had a lovely paddle yesterday with an old friend. Got some sun, a wee bit of exercise, and most importantly, quality time with a lovely person. I seriously needed a change of scenery.
I’m still in last nights scent- SL Cuir Mauresque. May switch it up, but then again, maybe I won’t because I smell just right.
Happy weekend to all! Stay cool…?❄️
Glad you got to paddle!?
Happy weekend to you Deva!
I don’t know SL CM, but I know what you mean about certain perfumes that smell so good the next day!
Sounds like you had a perfect day yesterday!
Cuir Mauresque is beautiful – now why did I never think of wearing it at bedtime? ?
I’m wearing Phlur’s Nanami today, which I find seriously relaxing and chill. I’m having a busy day but just wanted to pop in and wave.
? waving back?
??
HIya sistine!
I’m back in this year’s summer favorite: Annick Goutal Le Chevrefeuille. Besides housework, I think I’ll walk to various stores for the exercise to get shrimp and bread and slaw, etc. to make a version of a po’boy for the family dinner.
Supposed to reach 96 tomorrow in Seattle and that’s pretty warm for here and no AC for a lot of us. Tomorrow can be my lazy day.
House twins! I’m in Nuit Etoilee and staying in the AC today since it’ll be 107 F today.
I’m so glad not to be at work today. My unit is on the old/west side of the hospital and our old AC units can’t keep up in this weather: makes both nurses and patients feel miserable.
Have a great lazy day tomorrow!
Thanks! You smell wonderful. Stay cool if possible.
96 is hideous with no a/c!
I’m really not looking forward to tomorrow’s heat! We do have a clunky floor a/c unit that my aunt and uncle don’t need anymore since they installed central air last summer. If I owned instead of rented, I’d do the same thing! The clunky unit is a real pain in the butt to install and very loud.
I hope you can find a way to keep cool! I also hope you had a nice walk. Your dinner tonight sounds delicious. My boyfriend and I took a 4 mile walk this afternoon. Went down to Eastlake to Lake Union and got in lots of stairs and uphill along the way. It was a lovely time, especially when in the shade.
Chevrefeuille and shrimp po’boys! Can I come over?? We weathered 105 with no AC two days ago, but it wasn’t pleasant.
SOTD vintage Chamade edt – just got it and it smells wonderful. It was a blind buy, a tester bottle with the Somers, NY label. I also have a micro mini of the heart bottle on the way. It has a little darkened dab of parfum, but for <$10 I thought it'd look nice with my few "collectable" minis. Must admit, though, that I don't have a very good scheme to display said minis!
Oh lovely, so glad your blind vintage buy worked out!
You smell terrific! Vintage Chamade is a real beauty!
Indeed it is.
Perfumed high-five to NST’ers! Moss is my first love, but galbanum is not far behind! I want to grow it, just for how dramatic a plant it is. I guess it does not grow in the US? Does anyone know?
Apparently it grows on mountain slopes in northern Iran. Maybe it would grow here in similar climate and elevation conditions?
Thanks, SheriG! I wondered about that…can’t find seeds online…but my sis lives in UT, so I wonder, if I can find seeds, maybe it would grow for her??
Worth a try! They’re interesting looking plants.
I love galbanum too — what are some of your favorite fragrances with it?
Hmm galbanum! My favourites are Chanel No 19 and Papillon Dryad.. but very keen on trying more galbanum prominent perfumes.. What are yours?
RL Safari, EL Beautiful, Balmain Ivoire, and I think Avon Imperial Garden, all in the older versions, have the thread of what I think of as galbanum. I like Chanel No. 19, too. I checked some others and Fragrantica just has “green” notes listed. Free associating here, but I think sometimes carnation with civet or castoreum might give me an impression of galbanum. I’ll have to pay more attention. Anyway, Chamade is a delight.
I highly recommend a cheese plate with a dome glass cover, like a very small cake plate. I do this in my dim bedroom – the dome is clear so I can see the pretty little bottles and they don’t get dusty because of the cover.
That’s a great idea! My minis are tucked away in a box because of the dust issue, but I’ll look for a cool cover for them!
Thanks – I will try that, and it’s a good excuse to go to the Antique mall and look for a vintage domed server of some sort 🙂 AAnd a vintage perfume….
SOTD = two conservative squirts from my new bottle of Killian Amber Oud. Love this scent, and since I smeared those two spritzes all over my arms and neck, it is enough for the heat, but not overwhelming…as always I get sweet amber and very little oud….compared to the Memo Sham’s Oud which is a big traditional oud bomb. Wearing mauve, taupe and ivory in the form of Keen hiking sandles, (the taupe), dusty mauve joggers with zippered pockets, which look cute, but are some technical fabric so they are sweaty and itchy and every time I wear them I think i should get rid of them, but when I take them off, then the color is perfect to go with this pink spaced dyed tunic sweater which i just love, so then I wash them for one more round, the perfect shopping outfit. Such a weenie.
You smell lovely! I’ve liked all three BK ouds (amber, rose and incense) but the one I wear the most is Incense Oud.
I haven’t smelled the incense one – I will get a discovery set of a bunch of those which seem like I might like them someday. Right now I am trying to whittle down and round out my collection to things I know I like already!
Big pet peeve of mine – that so many technical fabrics (I’m looking at you, Title 9, Athleta, etc.), are in fact way too hot to really wear a lot of the time, at least where I live. But if the color is perfect….
Yes, exactly. People do wear those items, or at least want to wear them outside of air conditioned gyms… but in the case of these joggers, the color is truly perfect. Sigh.
I made an REI employee super uncomfortable once whilst returning some hiking pants a few years ago. I bought them right before a backpacking trip down in the redwoods–muggy and humid in August in the deep forest! I returned the pants afterwards because I was dripping with sweat from my bottom the whole time. Awful. He asked me why I was returning them, and I told him. ?
Should clarify that this does relate to the conversation above–the fabric was not nearly as breathable as I needed it to be! (Sorry if my comment just seemed like a gross non-sequitur!)
Technical fabrics are also a big pet peeve of mine. I know cotton blends supposedly don’t wick away sweat as well, but I usually find them more comfortable. Of course they are rarely opaque enough for squats at the gym or yoga classes (not that I’m doing either of those things right now).
I’ve wondered too about “the emperor’s new tech cloth”: the ads show everyone jogging and hiking but I say too it is clingy and sweaty. Cotton madras anyone?
Yes, I had some lightweight all cotton bike shorts that were great to run in. Haven’t found any of those in years. Everything has spandex and polyester… ugh.
Another gorgeous photo of flowers on a wall today, Robin! I forgot to say yesterday that I think I have photographed the scene in Córdoba that you used yesterday. It’s a pretty famous wall or courtyard there. So gorgeous, really all over that part of Spain.
Oh cool!! She has a few shots of that location (most of this week’s photos were from the same person.)
Hello, I hope everyone is well! Between the pandemic and new motherhood, it’s been a while since I wore perfume regularly.
Recently I had fun picking free samples while ordering tea from Luckyscent, and a small dab of Bortnikoff – Musk Khabib made me so happy I had to come here to say hi. Creamy musk, ylang and vanilla atop many woodsy notes. It’s light and beautiful 🙂
That sounds wonderful. Will add this as a freebie when I place my next order (nothing yet).
Ooh, that does sound good!
Enjoy your new sample, it sounds lovely.
Thanks for the tip! I was noticing the NST link for free shipping at Luckyscent today…..
That sounds like a good one!
It’s so nice to see you (sorry I’m late in responding). Congrats on new motherhood (how’s it going?)! And thanks for your rec. I’ve added it to my list.
SOTD = Van Cleef and Arpels Rose Rouge
I’m starting the Captured Unicorn CP today. I got a lemming for this as soon as I finished reading Lucas’ review October 2018. Inexplicably, Bergdorfs did not have this available for at least a year. I finally found it at a very good price at an online discounter and got my large sample – W00t!

Last call for U.S. peeps interested in a split of Chanel Les Exclusifs Le Lion. I have an opportunity to purchase a 200mL bottle at cost (+shipping from the U.S.) and will order it if I have enough interest for 150mLs. So far, we’re up to 75mLs and some have mentioned doubling their request (but so far I’ve only captured the lower amount). We are halfway there. If I get interest for another 40 mLs, I will place the order. There is no guarantee I’ll get it so no payment until I have the bottle. For reference, the cost including shipping and new packaging materials: $15-$16 for 5mLs or $25-$27 for 10mLs. Please email me by end of day today, Saturday 15 August, with subject Chanel Le Lion Split and let me know how many mLs.
I’ll save my mall rant for another post!
Another very pretty bottle!
I’ll email you, interested.
I’m interested in Le Lion! I will email you if your offer still applies (I know it is Sunday).
We are having a beautiful day today, Warm, sunny, breezy with low humidity. I am back from a walk in the park with my doggie and I am almost on my way out to run errands. My sisters are coming over with my in-laws and the children for dinner tonight. Mom is not doing good, so I hope she cheers up having all of us around for a couple of hours.
Wearing Chanel Cristalle EdT, which always puts a smile on my face. A summer favorite! Just few sprays left on my full bottle, so it will be a big thunk next time I wear it.
Hope you all have a healthy and wonderful weekend! ?
Your weather sounds perfect- enjoy!
Sorry your mom is not doing good, hope being with family does cheer her up!
Thank you, madtowngirl! ?
Wishing you a great family visit and well wishes to your mom!
Thank you, Lillyjo! Hoping for the bes! ?
How’s the doggie, hopefully better? I’m so sorry Mom is not doing well, a good meal and loving family is the perfect remedy, I hope you all have a nice evening. 😀
I love Chanel Cristalle (both EdT & EdP), you smell marvelous!
Thank you, SmokeyToes!
My doggie is doing much better. He is on a very strict diet and treatment. Hope he stays stable for a long time. ?
Excellent news!
Enjoy the family reunion, indeed it might be just what your mother needs.
Thank you, Aurora. Looking forward to having a nice and pleasant time!
Hope you have a great family visit.
Thank you, She-ra!
Hooray for a family get together. I hope this is what mom meeds to feel better. And good news on a healthier doggo!
Thank you, Hajusuuri! It was very uplifting for mom to have us around. She enjoyed it a lot.
Hope you have a good family time! I wonder if you are fixing/someone’s bringing any special family tradition dishes! I have not gotten to know Cristalle yet, but I do have a mini and some vintage sample viles…waiting.
Thank you, MossyBerry! We had a nice time. This time we didn’t have any traditional dishes. Mom loves Turkish food, so we picked up dinner from her favorite Turkish restaurant. She enjoyed it!
Perfect! Restaurants are so set up for take out nowadays! We had so many good memories of favorite dishes with my dear parents, who are gone now. I sadly did not live near them, so on visits we would get all the favorite treats, light the candles, and do it up right! Dad loved to wear a jacket even 🙂
I love family reunions where everybody brings traditional dishes. My dad, like yours, used to dress up and he was the one who enjoyed the gathetings the most. He is gone now, but usually for the main holidays we always cook a couple of his favorite dishes. That way we remember him in a more special way. ❤
Great news about your beloved dog! And hope that your family dinner went well!
Thank you, Jalapeno! We had a very cheerful time!
Glad you’re having a nice day. You smell great.
Thank you!
I’m keeping it classy today in Chanel 1932. I would love to relax today and technically it is my weekend off, but I’m busy writing a paper for the last week of my ethics class. I figured it would be an interesting class and it has been. No rest for the wicked, my next class starts Monday.?
Hope everyone is having a good weekend!
No rest is right! Congrats on finishing another class?
Thanks lillyjo! Feels good to have another one done.?
I used to teach ethics so I’m happy the class was interesting. May I ask what you wrote your paper about?
Oh wow! What kind of ethics did you teach? This was a bioethics class, so we discussed several interesting subjects.
Well, I wrote my paper on a topic that is also highly political….so, I’d probably rather not say.?
Regular Intro to Philosophy ethics, which included some of the standard big names (Aristotle, Kant, Mill, etc.) plus selected topics like euthanasia, vegetarianism, abortion, the death penalty, and so on.
? for powering on with your classes!
Thanks hajusuuri!??
Smelling classy for paper writing!
Ha! Thanks!
I’m all about relaxing today. Just finished a lunch of fresh pasta filled with ricotta and lemon rind and drizzled with a very good Sicilian EVOO and a glass of Sauvignon blanc. I have some Jeni’s salty caramel ice cream standing by and I’m about to dive into Angela’s second book, Dior or Die.
Wearing La Fin d’un Été for now but once it fades I will apply some Bombay Bling.
Wishing all of you a relaxing weekend!
This all sounds good – I read the book a couple of years ago and enjoyed it! Have a fun day!
Thank you E! You too ?
A mouth-watering meal, sauvignon blanc, perfume and a book. Life doesn’t get much better. 🙂
Great relaxation recipe!
that pasta sounds too good
Wow! Now that’s the way to appreciate National Relaxation Day.
Your lunch sounds amazing!
I’m so impressed by your gourmet lunch! I went to our local farmer’s market yesterday and bought fresh ravioli filled with goat cheese, lemon and basil — looking forward to making that for my family.
I was going to organize and clean my office today, but since I logged in here and heard about National Relaxation Day, I’ve decided to forego all that and spend the afternoon eating lunch, then reading, then maybe doing some yoga or mobility work.
SOTD is Mauboussin, a blind bargain buy from several years ago that I just found in the back of the perfume cabinet. Big opening, very spicy oriental, reminds me somewhat of the other blind bargain buy from the same house – Histoire d’Eau – but with more vanilla and less leather.
I was waiting for She-ra to pop up given your less leather more vanilla comment ?
Here I am! Yay for more vanilla and less leather! Leather can be tough for me depending.
Hopefully my vanilla-centric propaganda will not be deemed too political at some point. ?
I’m wondering if I could use my Jean Nate splash (arriving in a couple of days) as a hand sanitizer?
I think you can, it has alcohol in it which would be a perfect sanitizer.
I use 4711 as a hand sanitizer – with temps in the high 80’s for SF today, this will be very refreshing!
It needs to be 70% alcohol or above to work as a sanitizer.
Thank you Calypso, that’s the number I was searching for, couldn’t remember if it was 70 or 90%. 🙂
FWIW I’ve also refilled my thunked Atelier Cologne bottle of Vanilla Insensée with hand sanitizer, and those last lingering drops the atomizer couldn’t catch worked great in there! So if you have any empties and some generic sanitizer, that’s a possible route!
I am seeing the old horse racing commercial – racing along with a wonderful scented hand sanitizer! “Jean Nate, Jean Nate…” Ok, I am getting silly!!!
Hi folks! On my lunch and trying to type a post a story that will make sense, and have been unsuccessful. So I will just say this… one of the old timer employees who is always a sourpuss buttinski, tried to get my son in trouble for not stocking correctly. Now… he is still training and I welcome positive feedback but this wasn’t his agenda. I wanted to smack this guy upside the head. I decided to take my lunch instead.
Thanks for listening!
Sotd is Queen of the Night.
Good job taking your lunch instead of smacking. I’m sure it is incredibly frustrating. Just think how unhappy the sourpuss must be to try to make everyone miserable. Best of luck.
He really is a sourpuss. He never has a good word to say about anyone. We actually rarely speak unless it’s necessary.
How mean to criticise the work of someone who just started, you must be furious but were right to take your lunch break to cool down.
What really got me, was the snide tone/remark. Definitely not constructive criticism, which would have been fine.
Ugh, I sympathize. Maybe if it happens again, you could very pointedly ask “And what did you to to help him get it right, since he’s a trainee?”
Good for taking the high road. Some people are just not kind. I am sorry an adult doesn’t know how to speak nicely to others and that he was rude to your son. Big hugs and hope the day gets better.
Thanks She-ra. Lunch came at the perfect time for me today.
Hope you and your son have a nice rest of the day! Tomorrow will be a better day! ??
Here’s hoping!
A pox on that co-worker; he must have a miserable home life to ne so mean, not that it justifies his behavior.
He is mean, but he’s sneaky about it.. which is worse imo.
This story about your mean old coworker does not reflect well on him. I hope that your son wasn’t upset by that.
Thank you. The comment was said in a way that my son didn’t catch on, but I did and so did the manager.
Good job on taking the high road. When someone is a sour pus and buttinski, others notice. Let’s hope your son wasn’t too upset by the negative feedback.
I can only imagine Mr. Crankypants is taking his stress/unhappiness out on others (for whatever reason).
I had a coworker like that, and after several comments, I learned to either ignore it or have a kind response to take the wind out of his sails. It eventually toned down.
Thank you. I usually try to take the high road. This guy though… I say hello and only get one back half the time. It’s just rude.
No scent yet, but I thunked a bottle of rum that I’ve had for a few years yesterday, does that count? 🙂 Turns out very weak rum and sodas are the perfect drink for very hot evenings.
LOL to the thunked bottle of rum. And you’ve reminded me of one of my favorite beach drinks of many years (decades?) ago: coconut flavored rum and (diet) coke. Cheers!
Hey, rum thunk twin! ?
Light rum and soda over ice is one of my favorites! I like a squeeze of fresh lime into it.
A thunking of another kind!??
Of course it counts!??
….and I bought a new bottle at Bevmo. I don’t know much about rum at all so hopefully I made a decent choice. Straight up, it is not really a nice flavor in my opinion. Nice to see a few fellow rum lovers! I like rum & coke or cuba libre also but the caffeine in the coke makes it tricky to have it in the evening.
If you ever are able to try Ethel M chocolates, do try the rum chocolate liqueur one, it’s so good. Ethel M is the best chocolate I have ever had.
https://www.ethelm.com/bourbon-rum-creme-liqueurs-chocolate-gift/p/EM170250
thanks for the link!
I’m getting close to thunking a bottle of tequila…
?
Ahhh, you are reminding me if my Mount Gay and tonic days, with a twist of lime.
they sell Mount Gay at our Trader Joe’s…
Great variation on thunking! My husband and one daughter and I thunked a bottle of Prosecco last night, mostly via Aperol spritzes. That is now the drink I associate with vacations in warm weather!
What i did on my holidays in the morning for shopping and a short bike ride to our garden. Coriandre after shower plus a walk to a beer garden to listen to a local jazz singer while drinking some beer. Now relaxing on the balcony with a glass of Ricard.
That sounds lovely!
Hi all, supposed to be in the 80’s in San Francisco today. I chose Guerlain’s Mandarine Basilic for today’s SOTD – it’s already warm and the citrus smells so juicy and mouth watering.
I am not feeling 100% so I was in bed most of yesterday and finished The Iron Flower Witch series by Laurie Frost (pretty good!), Fledgling by Octavia Butler (didn’t like it as much as Kindred, there is a trigger in the beginning of the book I found difficult to get beyond), and book #2 of Curse of Dracula by Kathryne Ann Kingsley (good, but the ending felt rushed).
I just started Vanishing in the Haight by Colleen Hayes, it’s a slow starter but it’s getting really good, I was up until 11pm reading it.
My next book is Once Upon A Death (Days Of Death Series Book 1) by Dzintra Sullivan.
Later, when folks start heading to the beach, I’ll have fun people-watching from my living room window. Free entertainment, I’ll take it! Everyone have a lovely weekend!
Hope you will feel better soon, thank you for the mini reviews.
You smell cool and fresh.
Hope you feel better and enjoy the people watching. My brother can see Dolores Park from his balcony and likes to observe too. He complains mostly now b/c the park tends to be so overcrowded w/ drinking, etc. even w/ the supposed crop circles for social distancing. 😉
I will check out these book recommendations too.
Feel better soon, ST! You smell summery great! ?
I hope you’ll feel better soon! A bit envious of your action packed view!
You smell nice. I hope you feel better soon.
Feel better soon, SmokeyToes!
I hope you feel better soon!
Hi all, feeling better today, thanks for the well-wishes!
Wearing Fresh Cucumber Baie (now discontinued) for what will be a hot and humid day. My hair has tripled in volume.. We had unusual weather for the SF/Bay area, rain and thunderstorms last night – Smokey is terrified and won’t come out from under the bed…
People-watching yesterday was more than fun, we had a few wardrobe malfunctions, which was entertaining, we live on a hill and watched several skate boarders hot dogging it… A few teenagers had to be rescued off a cliff by the Coast Guard and Fire Department. All ended well but there were a LOT of sirens for several hours. Of course, no shortage of cute firefighters! So there’s that. 😀
I finished Vanishing in the Haight by Colleen Hayes, wow was it ever good! Complete enjoyment from beginning to end.
I was going to read Toni Morrison’s Beloved. While I loved it’s artistry and the power of the story, its nonlinear structure and graphic human and animal abuse to be too much. Perhaps someday…
Rose Madder by Stephan King became available from SFPL, I started that novel and was up until 2am, it’s a page-turner…
Without too many plot spoilers, for domestic violence survivors, there are triggers, FYI…
Glad to read that you’re feeling better!
Aw, poor kitty! Good to hear that you’re feeling better today.
My little sister is getting married tonight 🙂
I am wearing Bourbon French Jasmine right now, and will probably still wear it tonight. Or I will switch to Caron Parfum Sacre.
It will be a very small wedding, but we are still excited about it.
Congratulations and best wishes to her!
What perfume will she be wearing?
She wears Creed Spring Flower.
Congrats to your little sis! ?
How exciting.
You will smell great either way. Best wishes to your sister, I hope you all have a lovely time!
Congratulations to her! Your perfume sounds amazing just by the name.
Thanks. Bourbon French is a small perfumery here in New Orleans and I recently ordered the “Fragrant Florals of the South” collection, and I am sampling them one by one. Today I am trying Magnolia 🙂
Congratulations to your sister and family…have a wonderful time.
Congratulations to your sister! ?. Enjoy the party!
I hope it will be wonderful!
How fun! I hope everything is festive, romantic, and fun!
Congrats to your little sister!
Best wishes for a long and happy marriage to them! My niece is getting married next month: first marriage from the next gen! I am so looking forward to it.
Mazel Tov! Best wishes to the happy couple!
Congratulations to the happy couple! I’m wishing them many years of good health and happiness. ???
Thank you for all of the good wishes ! It was nice to see the little bit of family and friends that could be there to celebrate the wedding. It gave me and my family a sense of normalcy and happiness in these strange times that the world is going through.
Belated happy wishes. It is nice to get that sense of normal family joy from such occasions. Your sampler sounds interesting.
I’m in a dab of Vanille Insensee which is calming to me. Sleep hardly found me last night, and today I’m the paint gofer.
I did manage to make an apple cake though, which thunked a bottle of spiced rum and a bag of apples that were needing to be used, so I’ve gotten something done.
I’m sorry to whinge, but I really want to go to Target. Wander around, sniff the shower gels and fancy cleaning stuff, look at the colored pens, etc. I know I shouldn’t, so I won’t. I’ll feel better tomorrow. ?
Apple cake sounds yummy! I made one recently, called Sharlotka. It had a yummy, crunchy top, almost like a macaron.
I had the same urge a few days ago to go out and wander some aisles at Marshall’s. I resisted. I’m pretty sure that I did not really need anything there, anyway. Feel better, amiga!
I just went down the Sharlotka recipe rabbit hole. Yum! Will have to try that next baking day. Did you use a springform pan, and if so, did you line it? Those pans make me nervous.
Yeah, Marshall’s is a browsing mecca for me, too!
I did use a springform, but I bet you could just line any pan with parchment paper with some hanging over the edge, so that you could easily pull the cake out.
Okay, I’ve done that before with granola bars, but forgot all about it. Thanks for the reminder! ??
You smell great. That’s my kind of Target shopping trip too. 🙁
Thank you! Also, thanks for sharing the news about the new Guerlain! Wheee, I definitely want to try it.
I went to Target two or three times before things got bad here, but no more.
I woke up with the urge to go to the beach and spend hours walking by the water. Too risky now, so that thought had to be painfully erased from my mind. Let’s hope better times will not take too long to arrive!
Could you maybe take a day off during the week and go then, if it’s less crowded? Or maybe it’s never less crowded.
When everything was closed, I had an odd urge to go our local Dillards and wander around. Now I can, but I haven’t actually gone yet. But I have been to Target (minus the sniffing) – not that fun (but then I’m not a big Target person). Are there perhaps other stores that you would feel safer in than Target to get some of that urge out?
I wish there was a store I felt safe in. There are just no safe places. If they are enclosed, then they are a risk, IMHO.
But this too shall pass. It really will. I’m getting things done around here that sorely needed to be done, and I’m feeling good about that!
Dillard’s is so nice! The whole first floor is dangerous….makeup, perfume, nice pajamas! ❤️
I loved our local Dillards back in Sarasota, I worked there as a perfume sales associate in the 1990’s, such a fun job.
Especially in our town, Dillards is the fanciest store around, so it feels nice to wander around in it…
Every Sunday morning, I look at the Target circular online and decide whether or not to take a trip. That said, I can see how it is a more difficult undertaking for you given the COVID status.
It’s really a no go right now.
You smell lovely, and way to bake!
Thanks, teebear! ?
Shopping at Target is no longer fun for me. My store was remodeled right before the shutdown, and between that, and certain persistent shortages, there just doesn’t seem to be a point in going.
Shortages are so frustrating. When you’ve taken the risk to be in a store, and they don’t have the merchandise, it just feels like you’ve risked the trip for nothing.
I truly envy your baking skills!
Thanks, but you would be surprised at the goop I’ve had to dump in the trash can!
The apple cake sounds delicious! I have a recipe for caramel apple cake somewhere… perhaps it’s good I don’t search too hard for the recipe, I’m getting a little fluffy(ier)….
Oh, I have a fluff issue too, ST!
We are in great company, no?? 😉
I’ll join in with the commenters who just want to wander around a store for a while. Until the weather just got too hot and humid, I scratched that itch by visiting a locally owned plant nursery and garden center, where I get a lot of the annuals for my garden. Most of the “retail space” is outside, with huge outdoor fans, it’s easy to stay several feet away from others, and everyone has to wear a mask, so I feel quite safe. It has been a nice way to get out of the house and do a little browsing! It can be dangerous to the wallet, though — I recently brought home a tree peony from one of those trips! Now I have to figure out where to fit it in when fall comes (fall is the best time to plant many things here in the South, because it cools off).
That’s a very good idea. There’s a really fun nursery a short drive away, with a huge selection of plants, specifically herbs, and it’s all open air, as you said. I’ll have to plan a jaunt this week! ?
I have great plans for getting things done today, but I’m still lazing on the couch after breakfast, so glad to hear that National Relaxation Day validates my behaviour. I have noted that it’s not an international relaxation day, but I figure it applies to so many of you nice folk on NST that I should join you 🙂
I will clean the bathroom at some point, maybe accompanied by a relaxing spray of Ouarzazate.
Wearing Vahina and Valkyrie today. I bought some of the travel sprays when SD’s line first came out but haven’t worn them in a while. There weren’t too many reviews on Fragrantica then but many more now and I shall grab some popcorn and catch up this afternoon.?
In exciting news a new Guerlain w/ iris and vanilla…Iris Torréfié! Notes below look interesting too.
Has anyone sniffed Patchouli Ardent yet? I’d like to get my nose on that one too. 😉
Top notes: bergamot, cardamom, coffee
Heart: iris, ambrette seed
Base: vanilla, woody tea, opopanine, leather
https://www.fragrantica.com/news/Guerlain-Iris-Torr%C3%A9fi%C3%A9-13977.html
sounds intriguing!
I saw this announcement and my wallet shrank back in anticipation (and fear) of its release.
Good for taking the high road. Some people are just not kind. I am sorry an adult doesn’t know how to speak nicely to others and that he was rude to your son. Big hugs and hope the day gets better.
Sorry…meant for lillyjo above.
Prepared a crêpe batter this afternoon and had three this evening for dinner. The weather changed to cloudy and rain which was needed so it’s all good. Wearing Caron Eau de Réglisse.
Yum! I need to break out my vintage crepe maker!!
How wonderful about the crêpe maker.
Got it from Mom; from the 1970’s crepe revival. Anyone remember “The Magic Pan” chain of restaurants?
I do!
I love crepes so much. I rarely get to eat them. My son asked me if I had any perfume friends in the UK? I told him I did, and he wants to know if people there use the word nought instead of zero alot? So I am asking ?
Passing you one. Yes, nought is British, it is used although zero has become more popular (I say zero but then I learned English in the US).
Thanks Aurora! I will let him see your response. I learned something too.
I have had a day with some drama. Early on when attempting to break up an incipient cat fight by sticking my leg in between two boisterous young boys, I got badly scratched. Ow! Then I was on my way to take stuff out to Mom’s when my best friend called sounding desperate and asking for help going to the ER. So I turned my car around and headed in the opposite direction and took her. She could barely walk and was shaking and I was scared. It’s not Covid because she has stayed in her house the entire time with no visitors, getting groceries delivered. That was three hours ago and I still have no word. I’m worried. They are not allowing any visitors in with patients due to Covid. Creepy. Well in the middle between those two dramas I showered and put on Vega because of Pyramus’s post above. It is not a super-potent scent on my skin and I can’t asses her interesting claims about its parentage because I don’t know one parent, Paco Rabanne Pour Homme. It’s just a soft pleasant Guerlain-esque memory now. Which is good because I don’t need more drama.
Ouch on the cat scratch and wow on you helping out your friend. I hope she will be ok.
I hope your friend will be okay and that you’ll hear some good news soon!
Be sure to get some neosporin and clean that scratch good. Bad kitties!!
I hope your friend is o.k. and there is no more drama for a good while!
I hope that you get good news about your friend soon! Also seconding the advice to clean the cat scratch and put antibiotic ointment on it… those get infected so easily.
I hope you get word soon about your friend, and I hope the news is good!
It’s a lot for one day. Hope you will be reassured about your friend soon.
Yikes, that is a lot of drama! Does your friend have a cell phone? Or do you know if she has been admitted or still in obs? I won’t tell to thoroughly clean those cat sctratches, because I’m sure you already have done so by now. But, I would keep a very close eye on them over the next few days…
Thanks everyone for your concern. My friend did get admitted and had a lot of tests and finally they let her go home after giving her IV fluids. There was nothing they found but her blood pressure was dangerously low. I went and picked her up and dropped her back at her home. She was definitely better but still said she had a piercing headache. It was scary. My cat scratches are all right today and I’m applying antibiotic spray regularly.
Good to know on both counts. It’s easy to become dehydrated in this heat, so I hope she’s going to up her fluid intake. Glad those scratches are doing well!
I hope your friend is ok. I hope she stabilizes and is able to rest. Good to apply that antibiotic spray, cat scratches are not good.
I had no idea it was National Relaxation Day! Mom told me first thing that it was National Lemon Meringue Pie Day today, and that she planned to celebrate that. 🙂 We were out and about this afternoon. We went to the Dollar Store, to the library, and to our usual grocery store. Lemon meringue pie was on sale at the grocery store. It really wasn’t a big grocery shopping trip otherwise, thank goodness.
I got creamsicles, to belatedly celebrate that day. Mom likes oranges as a fruit, but doesn’t like other foods with orange flavoring. Dad had a tooth extracted the other day, and is still recovering from that, so I told Mom that Dad would help me out with eating creamsicles. Dad said he was willing to do so. lol
Scent at the moment: C.O. Bigelow lemon body cream, from a trip to BBW last year. That Bigelow website is still very tempting. 😀 Last night, I found my bottle of Snowy Citrus Swirl lotion, so I went to bed smelling like a creamsicle. lol
I’m happy it was cooler here today, if still humid.
Take care, folks!
Definitely cooler here too, but still kinda “Yuck” in my book. No Creamsicles for me yet, but I’ve been making do with mango sorbetto.
That sounds like a good way to “make do.” LOL
Sampling Dryad this afternoon. What a beautiful perfume!
It was announced that we’ll be working from home until at least this time next year, with a hint that full time in the office won’t be happening again, ever. I think I’m happy but not quite sure. What a big change!
That is a huge change!
That is huge. Maybe you will have some flexibility, if the full-on home time does not work for you. Our office definitely split into two camps. Some loved the home work, got their home office going and never looked back. Others could not do it and kept up the same routine (this was not age-related BTW). I’m not sure anyone thought it was no big deal. The people with young children are the only ones right now who are floating between the two worlds, because of care issues. I think it’s hard on them!
Dryad is my new(est) favorite thing to spritz – you smell heavenly!
I heard that REI corporate is considering going work from home for good….I would feel similar to you, unsure how much I’d like it.
I love Dryad with a passion! So far my work is remote until January, and then we’ll see. Even then, I expect I’ll be able to work from home a few days/week. I like working from home, I feel as if I get so much more done without all the interruptions!
Woke up with some of yesterday’s choice still Wafting ain’t just resprayed both (Orange Sanguine and Vanille Insensée) for a beach day today. We brought our camper and got here early and found a good shady parking spot. It’s nice because that way we can just walk back and forth to get snacks, let Nacho nap, etc. Perfect way to spend a Saturday! Also, it was 77 here today and 107 where I live, so there’s that too lol.
There’s a missing kid here now though so I’m worried about that. The mom is frantic and police are here. We’ve all been looking but no sign yet. Please send positive vibes and thoughts.
Gosh, you can tell I’m trying to type fast lol. *wafting and just*
A mother’s worst nightmare. Prayers the child is found safe.
He was found thank goodness. I don’t know the specifics but he was back with mom. Thanks goodness, the whole beach was stressed for a while.
Oh good!
Thanks for reporting back.
I’m a day late with this week’s CP, and enjoying my selection very much! I can’t wear Theorema, but its sibling Theorema Esprit d’Ete is so pretty on me.
Has NST ever done a “Sibling Rivalry” project where you name 2 perfumes that are scent siblings, and you can wear one but not the other?
What a great suggestion – I know I have at least two of those rivalries.
Thanks!
What a great idea! I can’t think of any right now, but I guess it depends on how one defines “siblings”. Flankers? In the same line, like Hermessences, or Aqua Allegorias?
All of the above. Let’s have some fun! (I accidentally typed in ‘sun’ at first, so I guess that was a Freudian slip…)
SOTD is Eau Des Merveilles. I’m on the PNW coast and EDM is a nice match for being next to the ocean. We are very lucky to be enjoying mild and sunny weather.
Mr. Birdy and I adopted a very shy dog yesterday, and I’m hoping that he can embrace National Relaxation Day a bit more. He has a comfy out of the way spot to hang out and we’ve been checking in on him periodically and delivering treats, but he’s still quite on edge.
Aww, love adoption tales! Animals are very adaptive and I’m sure he’ll come around eventually.
The last adult dog I adopted, I used a crate as a safe place. I fed her in the crate twice a day, and she got special treats and toys when she was in there. I used a wire crate with a blanket draped over it because dogs are denning animals. Every time a thunderstorm rolled through, she made a beeline for the crate because it was her safe space.
Good luck with the new pupster! ?
Thanks! Progress is being made. So far his favorite places to hang out are on tall beds or couches where he has good vantage points and can surround himself with pillows.
Poor baby! When we adopted our Lucy, she was so timid that she wouldn’t come out of her crate for three days! I finally called a friend of mine who fosters many rescue dogs, and she came over, coaxed Lucy out, showed us how to encourage her, etc. We also used a lot of bacon as a special reward for socializing! Lucy is still somewhat timid but not with us; she’s very snuggly.
Three days is a long time! So far the only treat he has been remotely excited about is peanut butter. Today he decided that the living room is an okay place to hang out, so progress is being made.
Lol sotd..cookie dough. Lol I went on a baking kick past few days. I’ve got like 4 dozen cookies that need a home. Lol if anyone wants them email me haha. They are peanut butter chocolate chip, almond butter cookies and regular peanut butter and some with pb n j in the middle haha. Take some off my hands lol.
Gunna be 115 today for a high ugh. I need to buy better deodorant lol. Any good recs for a nicely scented one? Lol.
Movie theaters are officially selling tickets..so that is pretty cool…welcome back 10 dollar popcorn with goldeny goo on it.
115! I can’t even imagine.
I’d go to movies. Easy to maintain distance and not supposed to talk, so….
Woke up early to the sound of … drag racing? I’m uphill about four or five blocks from a main thoroughfare of sorts, and the racing sounds used to occur late at night. Now 6:00 on Sunday morning? Good grief. There are traffic signals on that street that must be timed just right for speeding – amazing how the fast-and-furious manage to ferret those places out. ???
I was really busy yesterday and forgot to post yesterday. Spent the day cleaning and did a little grocery shopping. Still in Memoir body stuff and debating on if I should go the Coco Mademoiselle route or go with Cormandel. I ended up with 3 candles from the Bath and Body Works sale. I don’t get to the actual stores too often but I noticed that they sell out of stuff online way too quickly. I wanted to get the Honeycrisp Apple, Apple Weather and another one. When I got to the website, the apple ones were sold out and that was yesterday morning. Ended up with my 3rd choice. I don’t think that they don’t plan as well as they should with their sales for their website.
Forgot to add, I am celebrating a friend’s birthday later on today and I can finally give him his gift. It’s been sitting on my dresser for 3 weeks and I want some space.
I don’t get to the store much either. I’ve never ordered from them. How much do you have to spend for free shipping? I normally would spend about twenty dollars in store.
Once in a while they have a free shipping code but it’s not like so many other online stores where you have to spend a certain amount before you get free shipping. If you spend about $10 or under you spend $9.99 for shipping. If you spend more than, $11 or $12, it’s $5.99. Highway robbery is what I say. I am really waiting for is Candle Day. It is supposed to be on December 5th and that is when Bath and Body Works has the best deals on 3 wick candles.
SOTD = Mohur Extrait – best Rose ever, although I do have POAL and Rose de Petra in rotation right now. When I wear this, adorable hubby is always extra snuggly. This morning after breakfast, I was fiddling with the oven, getting ready to make a ham cheese and broccoli quiche for quick lunches, and he was nuzzling my ear and explaining how much he loved me. 🙂 The simple joys of married life. The oven is heating up the house so I have the air conditioning going. Another simple luxury. Hope everyone can have some comfort and contentment in their day as it goes by!
You paint a very sweet and loving picture! ❤️
Happy Sunday fragrant folks! I’m in NVC Trayee from a travel bottle, which is just perfect in every way- from the packaging to the scent.
After paddling Friday I went to the Folk Art Center here in the Blue Ridge Parkway to look for a gift for a friend. I hadn’t been there since I lived up here 20 years ago. It’s a total rabbit hole for me as it highlights local artisans working in every conceivable medium. I could live right smack dab in the middle of the store. So many lovely things! No Shirt, No Shoes, No Mask= No Entry! They were enforcing this as well, which I was happy to see.
Stay well, all!
I would love to go to that place, it’s exactly the sort of thing I love! That’s partly what I enjoy when I go up to Michigan (usually) for my summer vacation–lots of the little waterside towns have fun little art centers and you can get some amazing buys: jewelry, weavings, paintings, woodcraft, glassware, ceramics, etc. I wish I could come and go shopping with you!
Shopping together would be a blast! Based on the home decor I’ve seen on your IG feed, I think we have very similar tastes.
On a different subject, reconnecting with friends was something I really needed right now. I’ve missed meaningful conversation while traveling.
Stay well Calypso, and keep an eye on those scratches! ?
Another vote for a Neela Vermeer scent. She makes great, classic perfumes.
I’m not a rose fan, but everyone seems to absolutely love Mohur Extrait. I may need to go buy a sample!
I love local stores like that.
I uncovered some things in my search through sample bins on Friday and kept them out to re-experience. This morning I’m wearing ELDO Rossy de Palma, the bright red rose one with a lot of spice and other elements (pepper, ginger, benzoin, patchouli). It’s a fun and vivid scent, perhaps not best for summer wear but it feels kind of inspiring this morning. It’s also called Eau de Protection. Maybe that’s true!
You smell fantastic! Rossy is one of my favorite roses.
Happy Sunday, all! After the wild night the Bay Area had, there was only one possible fragrance for today, so I’m bleary and sleep-deprived in Après l’Ondée. I’ll be picking up knocked-over chairs, drinking coffee, and hanging out my wash in defiance of the weather for the rest of the day.
Brilliant choice! And if you get tired of that, there’s always Un Jardin Apres la Mousson!
The weather was crazy this weekend! Holy cats alive, the air was humming with electricity. Having lived in FL, I loved smelling the ozone/rain in the air but wasn’t prepared with the usual double-dose of hair products to combat volume.
My hair does not like the increase in humidity….. I’m much fluffier than usual.
Catching up on posts from yesterday. Was in Eau de Shalimar yesterday and Twilly today. Didn’t even mind walking home this morning in the rain, I’m just appreciating the cooler weather.
Watching cycling. Critériujm Dauphinée on replay since we missed the live race. In the Megeve, so glimpses of Mont Blanc now and then. So stunningly beautiful. I could live there….
Elixir des merveilles today. I’ve had a few samples over the years and keep coming back.
My only baby turned four on Thursday and is going back to preschool tomorrow. It feels like he’s a baby all over again since we’ve been home together since March. I need to be able to work, but I will miss him.
You smell good! I finally got a sample of elixir – I’ve been on a quest to try all the merveilles but they keep coming out with more!
I hope preschool will be smooth sailing tomorrow!
I want to try the new one, too, even though my hopes for it are pretty low.
I like the original eau, l’ambre, and elixir, and I think I would like Eau Claire if I’d ever had the chance to smell it!
Is he excited to go back to preschool? When my three kids were that young, they really looked forward to seeing all their friends and doing all the activities, at least once they were four.
He is! Even though he liked being home, he keeps making up stories about what he and “his kids” used to do. He’s ready to have some playmates/classmates again. And I am mostly ready, too, but I am grateful to have had this extra time with him.
Happy belated Birthday to him!
SOTD was vintage Diorella this morning. Then I went outside to do some gardening and had to apply bug repellent! Now I’m sweaty and sticky, so I’ll jump in the shower and choose something different for the rest of the afternoon and evening. So many choices, so little time!
Sunday. More rain and more laundry. Maybe the sun will show up this week sometime?
SOTD = Theorema Esprit d’Ete again. It bloomed beautifully with the humidity today, so that’s one nice thing about the rain I guess.
Hi everyone. I did not know Relaxation Day was yesterday; I relaxed after work at a friend’s (smallish) dinner party at an outdoor mexican restaurant. It was a nice time. I really don’t do anything fun, especially these days, so I am glad I attended.
SOTD(s): Saturday I wore Blackbird Y06-5. I was not expecting what I thought was a lilac (??) note but have since looked it up and found it was actually banana. It was nice, a pretty spring-y-ish scent. Today wore Yearn, from a line of ‘mood fragrances’ from Victoria’s Secret, one of their nicer lines, IMO, and loooong since discontinued. A pretty gardenia. 🙂
Happy Sunday evening! I’m in Atelier Santal Carmin + Assam. Started out this morning in just the Santal and added Assam this afternoon, and the combo is nice, but the SC alone is mighty good.
Ugh, a jillion more flies in the house today!!!! Our old building is definitely not airtight so we can’t tell how they get in sometimes, but it was just too much for me this afternoon. I want fall now please ?
Finished my last class of ongoing ed for aerial coaching and have one homework assignment left, and then next month I’ll start a continuing education program at McGill (well, online atm) for executive production in creative industries.
It was nice catching up on everyone’s relaxation posts!
Currently put on some Angela Ciampagna Rosarium and lit my Boy Smells Hinoki Fantôme candle to promote post-fly-massacre calm.
