Lazy weekend poll ~ favorites, edition 2

Posted by Robin on 13 June 2020 1,190 Comments

A simple game (which I think we have not played since 2009): name a fragrance note you like, others can reply with their favorite perfume (or body product? candle?) with that note. Got it? I've started with hyacinth...

For a cheap thrill, Castelbel Water Hyacinth soap. I put mine in my lingerie(underwear)drawer and it has beautifully scented that small space for several years now.

My favorite vanilla is the modest Pacifica Island Vanilla, body lotion and spray, which smells alarmingly of alcohol when first sprayed but dries down nicely. I just recently purchased the sublime vanilla, vetiver and bourbon concoction that is OK Fine Fragrances Double Vanilla Bourbon aged in oak bourbon barrels.

Russian Musk from Areej Le Dore. I don’t know if it’s still available because he can only make small batches and they sell out fast. He manages to get real tonkin deer musc and it’s really in it’s own class. If you are vegan, then of course it’s a no-go.

Maybe the longest perfume name ever – Paris Regarde Scintillant Milles Beautes from Dali Haute Pafumerie has a lovely tart grapefruit topnote. Fragrantica says mandarine, but I smell grapefruit.

Try to find a bottle of Elie Saab’s Essence No. 1: Rose. It’s stunning and can be sometimes be found on the cheap at discounters. It’s really something else. And this is coming from a person who wasn’t so fond of rose-centric fragrances…until that one.

I like all the laughing roses. The ones that have a sense of humor. Andy Tauer Rose Flash, Tocade, Slumberhouse Sadanne with those raspberries and strawberries and maybe a little red wine. I think the sexiest rose perfume is the original Agent Provocateur. Their is also a beautiful rose note hiding in Tom Ford Sahara Noir.

I made some rose jam after Kevin’s article here years ago. And I’ve canned berries the last few years (in a little juice and wine) to great success.

Now I’m thinking I need to try making rose raspberry preserves! I rarely eat jam, but I love to scoop some berries on my oatmeal or yogurt in the morning.

I’ll add my favorites, since I didn’t see them mentioned. Rose is my favorite note (and I have nearly 50 rose bushes in my gardens) but I dislike many rose perfumes on me for one reason or another.

Mohur – Neela Vermiere (all-time favorite perfume)

Ce Soir ou Jamais – Goutal
      Rose Absolue – Goutal
      Tobacco Rose – Papillon
Sa Majeste la Rose – Lutens
      Ta’if – Ormonde Jayne

Ooh. ? Rose is kinda a gimme for me (no idea how many I own at this point, but I’d totally reach for more!). Here’s a harder one–is there a GOOD strawberry fragrance? I’d even consider shower gel or lotion. . . I was picking berries this week, and the field smelled A-MA-ZING as it heated up in the afternoon–ripe, sweet strawberries, warm soil, a bit of sweet, earthy manure. . . I would reach for a bottle that smelled like that.

I smell a lot of tonka in Coco Noir. It works well for me in spite of the way citrus and tonka are usually a fail for me. In fact CN was a love at first sniff.

Maybe that’s why I like it – I don’t think of tonka when I smell it. I don’t smell so much citrus in the edp but it really stands out to me in the body cream.

Last night I successfully executed Magnolia grandiflora thievery under cover of darkness. ? I selected a bud that was beginning to open and am observing its progress on my kitchen countertop. Next to common objects, such as a milk carton, the thing is just freakishly large.

One of my favorite perfumes is Grandiflora’s Grandiflora Sandrine. Magnolia is an accord rather than a single note, so my challenge would be to name other perfumes that include an aquatic note (which I usually very much dislike) where it actually works.

To further handicap the field, my other perfumes in that category are Puredistance I and Guerlain Idylle Eau Sublime.

If you like Demeter, they have a few straight up coffee scents, like Espresso and Fresh Brewed Coffee.

And, as a DIY option, you can place coffee grounds in warm oil, let that sit for a few days, then strain out the coffee. You can add it to any oil based concoction, and even mix it with a hard oil (like beeswax, or shea butter) for a solid perfume.

Grand Chalet is hard to procure in Europe also. They have a very weird online shop and the perfume doesn’t seem to be stocked much elsewhere.

LILAC please! I know this is a tough one. My favorites so far are Aerin “Lilac Path” and Vilhelm “A Lilac a Day”. Went to Galimard (in Grasse) a year ago to use their “organ” to compose a lilac perfume, and I failed miserably.

Myrrh essential oil and Frankincense are two oils I cannot live without. I use both on skin and diffuse them almost everyday. The most credible myrrh note in perfumery for me is Unum LAVS. Remember, this fragrance is the very same scent that is sprayed on the Pope’s vestments. Myrrh is not listed in the notes at all but it has that quirky cool creaminess that real myrrh imparts.

Serge Lutens A la nuit is a properly indolic jasmine and really does smell like sitting under a jasmine bower at night.

La Via del Profumo/Abdes Salaam Attar Tawaf is a natural perfume, a rich and warm blend of jasmine and myrrh.

A la Nuit is hands down the best, “straight” jasmine to my nose–almost only sweet, with very little bite. For a bitier jasmine, but weirdly less long-lasting, I like Montale Jasmine Full. It’s almost metalic at the start. For a softer jasmine, when I just want to feel pretty, I reach for Ineke Poet’s Jasmine, which now that I look for it online doesn’t seem to be showing up. Maybe discontinued?

SJP Covet and SL Fleurs de Citronnier. Lemon is my friend in these. I like to smell musk on others, but these two are among the few musk-forward scents I can wear. My nose can appreciate an earthy musk, but my skin requires something astringent to balance it.

Echoing others, but in order of how much I love/wear them: TDC I miss Violet (Bertrand Duchafour’s genius); Berdoues 1902 Violette EdC (lasts 30 mins but nice dry violet flower, bit of leaf, not pricey); Outremer Violette (sweetish, brief, but smells realistic). I got the Berdoues & Outremer inexpensively at smallflower online. I know this may cause a gasp, but I got Annick Goutal’s La Violette from Saks & hated it – actually returned it! All I could smell was spicey violet leaf for about 30 seconds & then, nothing! I took the $180 I got back & put it toward a couple bottles of I miss Violet instead. Maybe I just got a bad bottle of the Goutal…

I had a small Sammarco Alter sample passed on to me from someone that did not care for it and I found it to be the most credible rendition of jasmine tea I have ever smelled. I think it is advertised as a Jasmine Incense but I got straight up jasmine tea rendered in a really lovely way.

I was disappointed with the JM Tea series. I liked them at the top notes and then they’d become meh as they dried down. I kinda wish I’d bought the milk one anyway, because I really liked it’s weird, milky vibe! Unfortunately, it was like they were on the market precisely two minutes–I’m usually a more deliberate purchaser than that. . .

I think we may be talking about 2 different series. I was talking about the Rare Tea one that was super-expensive. It didn’t have the Sweet Milk one.

Ah yes. Sorry. They did a “Tea Series” that was four scents that could be worn alone or layered onto each other. Earl Grey and Oolong, that sort of thing, and one of them was something like Milk or Milk and Lemon, maybe?

        • neyronrose says:
          15 June 2020 at 1:17 am

Surrender to Chance had samples of the JM rare teas. These were not milky ones. Some had “Needle” in the name. One of those tea fragrances had changed names at least once, but one of the names was “Midnight Black.” I think another was “Golden Needles.” And there was a green tea or jasmine green somewhere in there…

Bulgari The Noir for great black tea. If you are very fond of jasmine green tea, I think Smith’s deodorant of that name and the associated body products smell really exactly like Jasmine Tea.

Annick Goutal L’Ile au thé is a lovely teafragrance, with osmanthus – like a softer version of L’Artisan The pour un eté.

For anyone who read my comment yesterday about Splendiris reminding me of Le Dix – I have them both on today and um, they’re pretty different. The contrast brought out the orange topnote in Splendiris and the vetiver/sandalwood in Le Dix.

A lovely simple benzoin scent is Caron’s Bain de Caron (I “think” way back in the day it was called “Bain de Champagne”). It’s got a lot of benzoin and vanilla. I got nearly a quart of it in splash format for about 20 bucks & decanted it into pretty sprayers. I use it after showering on winter nights before bed – – so cozy & comforting…

Hehe I also shudder at the thought of L’Elephant now. I swapped for it in the adorable mini bottle and almost didn’t put it on skin after sniffing the bottle. But I did, and then I instantly washed it off. It was easy to swap away luckily.

Calypso, can you share your favorites, too?

I love Montale Patchouli Leaves, Mazzolari Patchouli, M.Michallef Patchouli(dark, slight vanilla, touch of oud?, HdP Noir Patchouli is more chypre than pure dirty patchouli, but I love it. Tom Ford Patchouli Absolu is an almost cologne patchouli to me, dirty, but cologne like. His White Patchouli, is perfect. Still not purely dark, but along the lines of Noir de Patchouli, it really is beautiful.
Farmacia Annunziata Patchouly Indonesia, dark patch, that’s all I get and I love it.
Keiko Mecheri Patchoulissime is a Turkish chypre, labdanum, but was fleeting on me-I did use a dabber for a sample, though.
Patchouli Noir is on my wait list. There is a unique cherry note in that. Very interesting. What do I know? ?‍♀️
Les Nereides Patchouli Precioux is a soft, dark Patchouli with maybe a little musk?

      Random others…
      Demeter Patchouli
      Fresh Patchouli
      Crabtree &Evelyn Patchouli
Kuumba Made wide variety of patches
      Portrait of a Lady
      Frank Los Angelos
      Zum Patchouli spray

      I love this thread!

Diptyque Volutes. It’s marketed as unisex but I think it’s got enough in it to make it fairly “feminine,” depending on what you want. There’s iris, plus honey and some fruit. The EDP and EDT are fairly different from one another, so I recommend trying both. I’ve wound up preferring the EDP, but some reviewers seem to find it more “masculine.”

Clinic Aromatics Black Cherry for a sweetened pipe tobacco vibe. In a different direction, from having grown up in a time of people smoking everywhere in public, there are certain perfumes that evoke “cigarette-in-the-room” to me. Laura Ashley No. 1 and Bal a Versailles both evoke tobacco to me.

Interesting…I have Aromatics Black Cherry and never thought about tobacco but can’t wait to retry and find it…I see several mentions on Fragrantica now for tobacco for it too…thanks! I am much better at discerning notes I find when I get the the Cliff’s Notes first.?

Ya know, I think I read the mention of pipe tobacco in a in a Fragrantica review too; I was an early adopter for ABC and absorbed many reviews as they came out! BTW, I have Aromatics in Black, Aromatics in White and Aromatics Black Cherry but not the original Aromatics! I was questing for a vintage and kept missing out on auctions or hesitating over doubtful sellers and then just wandered off to a new branch of the rabbit hole……

I have a small spray of the White but don’t think I’ve tried the Black. The original I haven’t smelled in many years. I sometimes see it mentioned here and, given the age, I would want to seek out vintage too but then I think about Ebay and the work/research/etc. and then suddenly I find myself in another burrow of the rabbit hole anyways and like a fish with a short memory I just keep swimming. 😉

Ooh, Ambre Fetiche is one of my favorites. Many moons ago, I swapped a bunch of vintage costume jewelry for some AF parfum with Dinazad (if you’re still around, sister, I’m still wearing your perfume!). It is a really, really good amber. It’s got the same strength as headshop amber (of which I’m not a huge fan), but with refinement.

Pacifica has a cool little roll-on called “Contact High” that’s watermelon, lemongrass, & tourmaline. (Not sure if the tourmaline adds scent or just “good vibes” lmao.). They also carry “Watermelon Rainbow” deodorant, which I got to wear on the weekends to take a break from my workday industrial-strength version. It’s surprisingly effective and smells wonderful going on.

Is narcissus and jonquil the same thing?
Fazzolari Au Dela Narcisse has a strong daffodil/narcissus note.

Also SSS Nostalgie starts with a wonderful “ugly” narcissus note before it becomes a heady rose.

I can’t speak to the fine fragrance definitions, but with flower bulbs, jonquils are in the narcissus family. I think of jonquils in general as having a sweeter, cleaner scent than the paperwhite narcissus kind of scent, but I’m sure perfumes follow their own completely different rules here. 🙂

How about lily? I like Donna Karan Gold, and also the samples I’ve tried of some niche perfumes with “Lys” in the name. 🙂

(I would have said “clove,” but carnation has been done a couple of times above, and I figure that covers much of the same territory.)

I wasn’t expecting to like anise as a note, but then tried Rodin Bis blind and for some reason it really works on my skin in that composition – more floral/herbal than sweet.

I some of the warmer April Aromatics have labdanum. Here’s Calling All Angels, for example:

Precious Woods also has it (identified as cistus).

They offer a deluxe sample set of 2.5-ml sprays, nicely boxed, and you can choose any 10 of her perfumes, or you can purchase individual samples.

You’ve got to call galbanumgirl. 🙂

There’s green in Comme des Garcons Olfactory Library Leaves: Calamus. It includes a bamboo note, for instance. It doesn’t actually smell like calamus leaves, but I’m way too literal-minded about those things, as Robin has told me. 😀 Calamus leaves smell like cinnamon to me. Or some lovely spice blend with cinnamon as a main note, anyway.

Drumroll please, 33 is composed of Haitian vetiver, orris and angelica plus some other great stuff and is 89% natural. Chris tinctures many natural materials in his lab and makes really wonderful fragrances. Support independent perfumers!
