Tuesday and Emily Dickinson’s birthday. What fragrance are you wearing?
I am commando for another day at the dentist. Tea at the moment is basic Irish Breakfast with a little cardamom.
Reminder: on 12/13, we're doing Scents of the Season, part 2...wear something that smells like baked goods, or has a baked goods accord, or just reminds you of holiday baking. Suggested by thegoddessrena.
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Good luck at the dentist, Robin.
Wearing Serge Lutens Arabie. Festive, holiday yuuummmm!
Thank you! Looking forward to being done until I start the next set of filling removals in the spring.
I’m on that long-range plan, too (my dentist figures we’ll be done in say, 3-5 more years), except mine is leaving my mouth looking very much like one of those scenes from The Terminator, where you can see just how much “borg” there is in “cyborg.” I am also off to the dentist today – coinkidinks – but thankfully just for a cleaning, so it’s not going to overshadow my entire day.
3-5 years, oh dear! I keep counting wrong, but I have 4 fillings gone and 5 to go. Am going to leave 4 months in between, so hope to finish in July-ish 2020.
Have a great day pl67!
Thank you, Lillyjo. You too have a wonderful day! ?
Stay dry today and warm tomorrow, pl67!
Thank you, Jalapeno! You too stay warm and cozy as much as you can.
Lately the cats have been doing their best to help with warm & cozy! I have found myself part of a “Cat Pile” more than once.
Milk, oatmeal, vanilla and vetiver are the notes listed on my bottle of Barr Co edp. The first three sound like part of a recipe for me…. Maybe I should make oatmeal cookies when I get home from work
You made me wonder if vetiver is ever used in food as any sort of flavoring agent…
Apparently it is used to make khus syrup in India which is used in drinks
Oh, that’s what flavors khus. I like rose-flavored drinks and sweets better, if the rose flavor isn’t terribly strong. A little goes a long way. I like pistachio flavors, and coconut ones, but my very favorite flavoring is mango. 🙂
RIGHT, and I knew that and forgot!
Good Luck Robin…
I want to share an amazing night I had last night. My girlfriends and I went to a reading at the 92nd St Y. Andre Aciman was the author and it exceeded my expectations. He gave a reading from his new book (that I also read)…and my question got picked from the pile of index cards and I got to hear how Proust influences his work (that was my question). It was nice to meet an author that I admire and adore..and he signed our books and we got a chance to chat with him for a bit.
Last night when we got in the taxi my girlfriend mentioned to that I smelled good and I was in No 19 Poudre, and I couldn’t smell a thing on myself…how is this possible..
Tea is Shalimar Tea and SOTD of leftover No 19 Poudre since it must still be there even though I can’t smell it.. 😉
Che meraviglia ltsg
era una notte incantevole.
Certo! Una storia simile poteva essere ambientata solo in Italia!
I will work more on my grammar
ha fatta molto bene.
That’s really neat that your question was picked and got to meet the author!
Yes, he was really humble and his reading from Find Me was one of my favorite parts of the book…
Oh, go you! I have only read his shorter pieces, in the New Yorker. I should read more.
Robin, he was great! So humble, funny, engaging. He talked a lot about how his characters, the sons having a strong relationships with their fathers. He alluded to his Dad being “unconventional” and how they had such a wonderful open relationship. So sweet..
Oh, so glad. I really liked his piece in NYer about his deaf mother (that was the most recent so it’s the one I remember). I should really get Out of Egypt.
Oh lucky you!! I miss the readings at the Y….when I lived in NYC I was there all the time. And, as it happens, I am currently reading that book FIND ME and very much enjoying it. He certainly understands the underpinnings of pining!!!
“underpinnings of pining” Like Proust!
Vintage Bel Ami warming me up today. I had such a crazy experience last night – as I came up to a traffic light (going slowly with plenty of following distance I swear!) my car just would not stop on the ice, so I had to steer up onto the snowbank on the curb to keep from hitting the car in front of me. I was truly stuck, but FIVE people came to my aid on a freezing cold night, digging and pushing and refusing to give up even when it seemed impossible. Eventually someone with an SUV pushed my car out with his car! I feel incredibly grateful to all these strangers, what an amazing community. And humbled – I keep worrying that I did not thank them enough, and I will try to pay it forward. I recently listened to a podcast with a disaster expert. The host asked her, what is the thing that movies and TV get wrong about disasters? She responded that they always show people turning on each other, when in reality disasters bring out the best in people and they more typically become more helpful and generous. Isn’t that cool? And I totally believe it.
I am glad you are safe and sound
The kindness of strangers.
You are giving me faith in humanity…
Yes I second all that above from ltsg.
Thanks for sharing and giving us some holiday magic.
Great story and I’m so glad you got out!
First, you smell absolutely divine! Second, I had a similar experience a few years ago – took a wrong turn onto a deadend street where the only thing was a restaurant that was closed, and managed to get my wheels stuck between an ice dam and the curb. Luckily I had lots of gas in the car, and even luckier was an extremely kind woman and her very cooperative boyfriend who saw my lights and came to help. She said she was from Saskatchewan and had dealt with that kind of problem any number of times. She took charge, got the boyfriend out to shove, and told me which direction to turn the wheels and when to rev. Between them I was free in about 5 minutes. I wanted to get out and hug them both, but didn’t dare get out of the car on that ice! I think about them often and hope they are both happy and healthy somewhere.
Yes!! that’s exactly why I keep worrying I didn’t thank them enough. I thanked them heartily when they first came over, and I’m sure I thanked them again somewhere in the middle. But when the car finally started moving I was afraid to let it stop again so I just shouted thanks out the window and kept going. I hope they understood. The one guy shouted “have a good day!” after me so I think so.
What a great story! Glad you were freed quickly!
And just want to say thanks for the shout-out to Saskatchewan people! That’s where I’m from. We are used to frigid temps and ice and snow (unfortunately).
Yay for Saskatchewan good samaritans! 🙂 We have lots of experience with ice.
I was getting nervous reading this, because i know that feeling of not being able to stop. I have no doubt you thanked the strangers enough. I’m glad you are ok!
What a great story! I’m sure it feels like you can’t never thank them enough, but I’m sure you did. I agree with the disaster expert and have found that people do come together to help others, mostly. Living through a few disasters here, I found that people really came through for each other.
It’s true. When you get your car stuck people always come to help. I don’t watch the crazy news, because I know the good people outnumber the bad 10 to 1. They mostly report negatively.
I have been there (-52 in Regina, Saskatchewan) sliding on that ice and knowing you can’t stop. So glad kind people came to your rescue!
Wonderful about the kindness of strangers.
What a great bunch of folks! Pretty sure that you did say “Thank you” enough.
Good Luck Robin. I was at the dentist yesterday too and stayed commando as well, so today I am flying happy in DSH Epices D’Hiver. This really puts me in the Christmas spirit and I love the cinnamon note that I eminate in the beginning. (‘it almost glows’ HA!)
Happy Birthday Emily Dickinson, and thank you for Jane Eyre. It seems like a good time to read her collection of poems published as “Hope is the Thing with Feathers”.
I think Charlotte Bronte wrote Jane Eyre. But you smell good!
I hope that your dentist visit was a short and uncomplicated one.
Since I don’t really like most gourmand fragrances, I can’t actually participate in the CP. However, I can wear scents that might actually be in baked goods. First up is Dame Chocolate Man. This is the scent of a really good, bittersweet chocolate. Not really sweet at all.
Hey, that fits the cp just fine!
I’m still doing last week’s CP wearing Inoui until my sample runs out and so enjoying it!
Enjoy it while it lasts.
I am – but my secret is that I have a little more coming from a wonderful, generous NST poster. Yay for fragrance friends!
Casmir, for a day of laundry and running errands. It’s only in the teens here, but the sun is out, so no complaints. I’ll just turn the thermostat up an extra degree or two.?
Oh! And good luck at the dentist Robin!
Did you tell me before you keep the thermostat at 64? Mine is at 68, and it’s cold in here.
Usually between 64 and 66 depending on how cold it is out. My house was built in 1937 and the windows are a bit drafty. I would love to have it warmer but when my hubs and daughter are home they complain that it’s “too hot,” if I turn it to 66.?
Everyone in my house complains it’s too cold. Sometimes when I come home from work, they’ve turned it up, and then I have to explain AGAIN how heat is billed in degrees, lol!
OMG, my husband cries like a little girl if I turn it below 72. 🙂
HA!!!!
This comment made my day
I’m with your husband on that! My thermostat is set at 74 ? I have poor cold tolerance as does my naked kitty.
Ha! My husband’s threshold is 74. My response is always: put. on. some. freaking. shoes. ?
My winter thermostat is set at 71. Occasionally, if it is really cold or windy out, I’ll bump it up to 72.
I’m in Nanadebary Bronze from the FB that arrived yesterday.
Ah, a name from the past!
Vintage Shalimar EDC…day two
You smell great! My bottle is just a few years old, yours must be glorious.
It’s amazing!
I wore this when I was 12 years old many many decades ago. It’s like a walk down memory lane. Nothing like vintage. And the EDC lasts all day, even when just dabbed.
Is it the round bottle with a Pinocchio hat for the cap? My aunt had that one in the seventies and eventually let me have it. I wish I would have kept it.
Yes!!! That one!!!
Cousins in a current version edp. I’m sure yours is more glorious, but this is pretty darn good too! One day I’ll seek out vintage, seems they are not neccessarily hard to find?
I think current version is good too!!
Going for a vintage thunk with the EdC?
Nooo!! This one I don’t want to think.?
Thank!!
Oh
My
God!!!!
T H U N K!!!!!
Take that!! Autocorrect!!!
I had to smile that this, even if your Autocorrect was being a PITA yet again.
Lol! I don’t want to think either!
Last night, before bed, I tried out Monyette Paris Coquette Tropique. Now I know why they were selling the oil for $10 instead of the regular $45. Loud, incredibly cheap and full of tuberose. About to hop in the shower to get this off me and put on, I don’t know, LADDM or no 5.
I had wondered why it was so discounted.
I did too but thought it might be pretty good. Boy, was I wrong. I am happy it was only $10.
Oh, I saw that deal at Luckyscent but read enough reviews saying it smelled harsh and chemically that my curiosity was squashed. Sorry it was a bust ?
I’m off today and being lazy. It’s cold and snowy, and I don’t have to go anywhere, yay me! I’m thunking my decant of Armaf Club de Nuit Intense. I just changed the garbage bag, so it didn’t thunk, more like a swish. I smell really good. After the first ten minutes or so, this really does smell like Noir de Noir.
Oh, and hope you can have a good day after the dentist, Robin!
Enjoy your lazy day!
Oh, I am!
Thunk ???
?
It didn’t THUNK???? ?. It doesn’t count as a thunk then! Just kidding! ? Yay, for another decant finished! You smell great! I love Club de Nuit Intense.
Lol! Too much air in the bag. It just slid down, like it was on a ski slope?
??
? cute! Enjoy your day off!
I have read about Armaf Club de Nuit Intense, you make me want to try it, have a wonderful, relaxing day.
It’s a good alternative to noir de noir, after it settles down. The opening is a bit harsh to me.
Glad to hear that you are enjoying both your SOTD and your day off. Also, yay you for going to your grand niece’s b-day celebration over the weekend!
It was a great low key day, thanks!
Still in Winter Palace, but I’ll be thunking it later today or tomorrow.
Very busy boring chore day yesterday, and I’m still not done. For some reason, my house battery is not charging from the isolator like it should. I must have a loose connection somewhere. Why can’t things just work? All the time? 24/7? Like they’re supposed to?! ?
Here is last night’s sunset for those interested. The clouds made for some drama and were nice enough to dump the rain elsewhere.

Winter Palace thunk is a serious issue!
Seriously!
Murphy is a complete and utter jerk when it comes to technology. That’s why things seem to break all the time.
There must be software somewhere that tells the equipment to start trouble Warranty End Date + 1 ?
That picture looks so yummy… and I’m trying to reduce sweets during Advent, lol.
SotD is Carner Barcelona El Born. There’s something baked and crumbly about this fragrance. It’s sweet but without any calories.
Sounds good !
That looks yummy, Robin!
SOTD = Bvlgari Black
So good…

In other news, we are having crazy weather here, going up to almost 60 (not sure if it actually hit), but walking back from getting lunch, the temps have dropped considerably and it is raining. We know what that will turn to tomorrow morning when it’s expected to be 30 degrees. I hope to leave earlier so I can avoid the mad rush and the inevitable delays whenever s there’s any kind of precipitation. Although I don’t take it anymore regularly, the PATH system has taken to using “Network Communication Error” to explain delays, ever since the NYC subway used it to explain a massive outage earlier this year. Lies. All lies!
I’m not envying you that commute tomorrow in the slightest! Good luck!
I may not have to commute ?
Then that’s a good thing! ? Not sure if I will even see snow tomorrow, what with the changing forecast. It seems to be going to the north and west of where I am.
I am wearing Equistrius today. Not really a gourmand but it does have a dab of cocoa powder somewhere under the iris and rice notes. My bottle is so close to being finished. I will surely thunk it this winter.
Make sure you empty your garbage can before you drop the empty container ?
??
Great suggestion!
Nanaimo bars! OMG, they are so, so good! I haven’t made them in forever, but may have to when I get home for a Christmas treat.
My sotm was few sprays of Chanel Deauville, which has now worn off. I’m not wanting no wear scent outside lately as it seems to be attracting unwanted bugs to me. Yesterday we enjoyed a glorious day at Cocoa Beach; walked up and down the beach most of the day and enjoyed a Rum Rummer drink at a cute little beachside bar/restaurant as a reward. Today is alot windier outside so I stayed home to rest my weary feet.
I could get used to this vacation thing! Seriously.
Good call on not attracting any more flying monster bugs!
My mom sent us a box of Nanaimo bars for my husband’s (boxing day) birthday last year. Yum!
And was it you who made the butter tarts? Asking for a friend?
Yes it was me. 🙂
I used to work on Miami Beach across the street from the Deauville hotel back in the mid nineties when mid beach was still in decay. Those hotels were frequented by Frank Sinatra and crew and were super elegant and still modern in their decay. I think most were saved and remodeled, but not to their mid century glory. Every time I think of those days I remember the decaying yet glorious Deauville which still was receiving guests. What I wouldn’t give for a time machine to see it in it’s mid sixties heyday.
I’m wearing January Scent Project’s Smolderose and my partner wrinkled their nose and said I smelled like fruit candy this morning, which, ???? I personally think this one goes very vegetal on me.
That one’s supposed to be smoky rose, right?
Yep! It got a bunch of incredibly positive coverage from some reviewers a year or two ago but I several wears later I think it just doesn’t agree with my skin
It happens! Money saved.
I’m wearing Jour d’Hermes Absolu today and yesterday I wore Paris-Riviera for a work meeting. 2 great office scents! Some people in Fragrantica compare these two perfumes and now I’m kind of seeing what they mean. Some slight smell similarities but they would fill the same niche for me.
I’m dragging today, partly the dreary weather, and also stayed up too late watching a movie (The Body Remembers when the World Broke Open- anyone see it?). Off to find ☕☕☕
You smell sunny.
It is such a sunny perfume- perfect for dreary days, or any day!
I didn’t see that movie..do you recommend it?
I really liked it. It’s hyper-realism and I can imagine some people finding it too slow, but I like films like that. I found it very poignant.
I just can’t with gourmands. So I mixed up a stew of Pleasures and French Grey. Sprayed them both in the Fitbit. The smell is heavenly but definitely not gourmand. I do have lemongrass tea from my bush. And I’m propagating succulents, which may or may not be illegal. I’m scouting yard sales, hoping for retirement communities to get a big vintage haul. I’ll probably put them on eBay if I find any, but I’ll get to check out some old timers. Hopefully.
So you spray them on your Fitbit band, is that what you mean?
Yes the band. It holds fragrance really well.
Interesting, thanks!
I wanted a chypre today so I chose Acqua di Parma profumo.
That is such a great, underappreciated scent. You smell wonderful.
Thank you very much Cazaubon. Yes, I seem to be the only one who wears it at the moment.
Oh, I wear it, and love it. A very generous NSTer graced me with a bottle of it. You smell fantastic!
Thank you Nancy, glad I’m not the only one 🙂
Chypres seem to be underappreciated by the general population. However, that is definitely NOT the case here at NST.
That’s true, but this particular one no one seems to wear it.
I don’t think many places sell it – probably because chypres are not popular with the general public at the moment.
There isn’t any AdP at all around me. What is your favorite chypre?
It’s probaby a tie between the original vintage Rochas Femme fruity chypre (which doesn’t contain cumin the way the modern has which ruined it), vintage Miss Dior and the original Halston which I discovered this year via a vintage bottle. I am also very fond of the modern Miss Dior Le Parfum, it’s my guilty pleasure. I could go on, I really adore that genre.
Tested Amouage Portrayal woman this morning (jasmine and ylang ylang were what I got), after shower now testing Isabey Tendre Nuit (sweet powdery floral).
Jasmine and ylang ylang sound great!
Box of Eels parfum today. Bertie Wooster is sick, and I am worried about him.
Oh, no! What’s wrong with Bertie?
The vet doesn’t know. Bertie’s been vomiting and having diarrhea every few days for about two weeks now. Blood work was normal as was a parasite screen. Ultrasound is scheduled for Thursday.
Oh dear. Do let us know what they find out!
Fingers crossed for you both! I would be worried, too.
Poor Bertie, sending healing vibes.
Maybe poor Bertie has a food allergy or intolerance?
Hope everything is ok with Berty and nothing serious is happening.
Oh no, I hope everything turns out ok.
Poor Bertie! Did they test him for Lyme or other tick borne illness? It’s rampant in my area.
I hope you get definitive news on Bertie as soon as possible. Take care. ?
SEEKING RECOMMENDATION
What good saffron fragrances do you know and love?
I remember liking Safran Troublant but it was extremely short-lived on my skin so something stronger is a plus.
Oddly, I never really smelled much saffron in ST- mostly rose and vanilla.
I remember liking Amouroud Safran Rare which is saffron and incense. And Aramis Calligraphy Saffron is quite nice. I also get a strong saffron note in Guerlain Songe d’un Bois d’Ete amongst the woods.
Adam Levine has saffron notes and Felanilla too.
Byredo Black Saffron was kind of nice, though more often then not I don’t enjoy that note in perfumes.
Shalimar Edp. I don’t have anything against gourmands, but I don’t seem to have any around (except Angel Muse perhaps).
Ah, maybe I will wear Angel Muse this week!
Same weird wet weather as Elisa P and hajusuuri for me today. Highest temp I saw this afternoon was 58 degrees F, which is warm enough that I had cracked open the sliding door to the patio for fresh air. Not looking forward to the plummet in temps expected for overnight. ☔
Another “not hot” shower today. The replacement part for the water heater should arrive tomorrow. Not sure exactly when it will get where it needs to be, but hopefully before the end of the week. ?
SOTD = Soivohle Incense & Myrrh perfume oil today. It has some rather prominent fruity notes to me, that remind me of the candied fruit that we used to put into fruitcake cookies back when I was a kid.
Oh boy, I hope the hot water heater gets fixed soon! Can you impose on your neighbors for a hot shower? Or maybe just stay at a hotel for a night?
I don’t really know my neighbors and would be kind of creeped out asking them if I could use their shower. It’s gone from annoying to uncomfortable, but if I could survive all those cold showers in junior high school, I ought to be able to deal with a few more now. I’m very thankful that our furnace still works like a champ! And putting my towel in the dryer before taking my shower is a nice hack, too. ?
When my power goes out, I go to the gym to shower…..now, when their power goes out, yikes are we smelly!!
Ugh. Cold showers are no fun, especially in cold weather. We had our gas shut off in an old apt right before hurricane Sandy because the landlord did not comply with safety citations, and then because of the hurricane National Grid took forever to get our gas back on. We did shuttle to nearby friends to shower, but mostly piecemeal bathing- I can’t tolerate a cold shower. Fortunately we had some good space heaters. I hope you get your hot water back soon!
Having a nice warm room after a cold shower does take the edge off.
Oh no! I hope it’s much sooner.. I would get a bit cranky if the hot water gets run in the kitchen and cuts into my hot water when I’m having a shower, and that’s only for a few seconds.
Right now, I am at “annoyed” with the shower temp. Let’s hope I don’t have to get cranky!
Adam Levine for Her as I was thinking about cheapies this morning – I found this for less than $10 at TJ Maxx.
Very late to the party today. Was out visiting with a friend battling brain cancer. Not a great prognosis, but we press on.
Wearing Chergui for warmth on this wet, wild weather day.
So sorry about your friend. I hope Chergui brought you comfort. It’s such a great scent.
Sorry to hear about your friend’s diagnosis. That has to be hard.
I sure hope that part is in early tomorrow. I would call the repair company every hour until they show up at your door. ?
Oops! This was for Jalapeno!
The repair situation is a little fiddly… one company is providing the part, and another one is doing the actual busy work. Let’s hope the folks doing the wrenching have a slot available for my repair sooner rather than later.
Organza Indecence for me today.
Yum! And that reminds me of holiday baking.
Life (well, new job) is kicking my butt, y’all. Just super overwhelmed.
Geisha Noire yesterday (gosh I love it soooo much) and Noir de Noir today. Apparently I’m feeling very Noir haha.
Sorry to hear that! Do you like the job despite being overwhelmed?
Thank you, Robin. Yes, I really do like it! I think the last three months- moving itself, staying in a hotel, buying a house, getting a job, etc.- are just taking a bit of a toll on me. I feel worn out. I’ll be fine though! My son comes in less than two weeks and I get time off during the holidays. Hopefully some family time and rest will give me a nice reset. 🙂
Oh I’m glad. Hope you do get some rest and nice time with your son.
Way late to make an entry here, but I had tried Demeter Gingerbread at bedtime, which was actually around 3:00 a.m. Tuesday morning. I had expected more like a ginger cookie, but it was intensely sweet, much more like a cake scent than I’d thought it would be.
I also have Demeter Fresh Ginger, which I’ll try somewhere along the line.
