Jo Malone has launched Rose & Magnolia, a new fragrance in the brand's 'Magic & Mayhem' holiday collection for 2019.
What it is: A cologne with a sensual floral scent with a mysterious character.
Fragrance story: Luminous magnolia and a duet of roses, blooming and enchanting. Alive under inky skies and the moons silver glow. A decadent heart of sweet and petaly Rose de Mai, warmed by the spicy opulence of Rose Damascena. Draped in sensuous patchouli and warm amber.
Jo Malone Rose & Magnolia is available now at Nordstrom, in 100 ml Cologne, $144.

Sounds pretty. I don’t think of Rosa Damascena (I would think by this she means ‘Kazanlik’ a.k.a. ‘Trigintipetala’) as spicy. Attar of roses/rose otto can be opulent — I’ll give her that. Is Rose de Mai a Centifolia rose? I am asking the collective NST “hive mind” here, because I know some of you grow roses.
We have a sweet bay magnolia, which is one of my favorites of the native (Eastern U.S.) plants I’ve gotten from area plant sales. That has a glorious fragrance. I probably mentioned that in May. That’s not the “magnolia” scent in perfume, though.
I’ll see if that one is at the local Sephora to try.
Yes, Rose de Mai is a centifolia, but I suspect you are taking these descriptions too literally.
There might not even be any natural rose extracts in the perfume at all, and anyway extracts can be molecularly altered, or used to make accords, that emphasize one or another aspect of the floral profile.
Yup, you’re getting to know me. 🙂 I take perfume ad copy way, way too literally.
The road to heartbreak, LOL…
My two favorite floral notes, hmm… Are these limited editions?
Yes, although like everything else JM, if it sells they’ll keep it! Also they’re bringing back Orange Bitters, again.
Speaking of feverish ad copy, I have an idea for a CP: wear a perfume whose ad copy was right on the nose. This is partly for my own curiosity, as at this point I usually don’t bother to read copy since they wander far, far away from reality.
That would be a very practical and useful cp. Ultimately expensive, but whatcha gonna do? ?♀️
That Jo Malone description above was actually fairly restrained as ad copy goes. lol. I just get stuck with rose perfumes about exactly which cultivars of roses they’re using, although, as Robin pointed out, they may not be using actual roses at all.
One that gave me more of a “What the heck?” reaction talked about samurai sailing in galleons on the high seas, bearing their load of spices for trade. That was mixing historical imagery in a very strange way. Some ad copy is simply ahistorical altogether. And there are the ones that refer to Asia, the Levant or Africa as “exotic.”
Anyone who knows me will tell you that I will be making a trip to Nordstroms to see if this will be added to my collection. Jo Malone has always been my favorite line!
