Hump Day and the last day of July, plus World Ranger Day, and there will be a black moon tonight. Happy birthday to JK Rowling! What fragrance are you wearing?
I have no riddles today but I do smell fantastic: I'm in Aftelier Candide.
Reminder: on 8/2 we're doing edition 3 of the Guessing Game...describe your perfume to us, OR, give your perfume the name it ought to have had, and we'll see if we can guess what it is. Suggested by Glannys.
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I got twenty new, mad gold bras on blow – outrageous!
(This is a clue to my SOTD and not what I did at the weekend. Honest.)
FM Outrageous! ?
Nope…
Quick PSA – TKMaxx UK have a few Miller Harris on their website at the mo. Most at £34.99 for 100ml…
Thank you so much for this Bob, I had wanted Tea Tonique for a long time but was waiting for a good deal so I bought last evening.
Did you purchase something yourself?
you are so good at this!
Thanks!
JPG Clasique layered with Tuscan Leather??
Hilarious, but not right.
Story of my life, BobH
Oh, now that’s funny.
Love it!
Such an inspired guess, lillyjo!
Whew, I’m stumped! I think it’s an &lit but that anagram is pretty long… If no one guesses it, would you give an enumeration?
It is an anagram, “outrageous” was the hint fot that…
Clue:
But maybe not as outrageous as I SHOULD be. (Then I’ll blush and change my mind.)
Don’t get me wrong baby (I don’t swallow)
And there it is!
Yay! I could not have done it without your clue and Regina’s comment. Before that, it did not even occur to me it is an anagram.
Nice!
Well done! I got stuck on imagining Kylie Minogue clones in gold bras shoplifting perfume
Go Glannys! I was never going to guess this one.
I wish I had BobH’s wit to describe my SOTD. 🙂
This scent is tribute to a person who not only played an important part in the house’s founder’s life but also was the inspiration behind more than one product of this house.
Boy Chanel?
Yes!
Also a good lipstick color Chanel Coco Rouge Shine Boy
This happened to me about half an hour ago, so I decided to share it for a laugh. I was doing a sight singing exercise, and let’s just say that some notes are a bit high for me. My mum looked in the room and said, “Oh! And I thought the cat is meowing again.” Thanks, mother.
Beautiful avenue
Champs-Elysees?
Yes!!!!!
Spine strength. (Too easy, I know.)
Chanel No 19
Ha! Mine ended up below as a separate comment!
Ding!
Making No 5 hip again with this number. And I could probably buy 5 bottles of No 5 at this perfume’s price. Maybe I’ll pick up another sample after Labor Day…
If it’s hip, I’m never gonna get it, sigh…
Oh but look, there’s a song for you in there??
En Vogue? Never ever gonna get it ? You’re hipper than hip in my book ?
I loved En Vogue!
Right back at ya?
Ooh ooh ooh!
Baccarat rouge 540?
And yes, that was me doing Arnold Horshack?
Mista Katta, Mista Katta!
Lol!?
Haha! But, nope.
Clive Christian V?
Le Labo Tonka 25?
Nope, but you’re the warmest!
Le Labo is more your style….
I’ve never touched a Clive Christian!
Le Labo Aldehyde 44 Dallas maybe?
You’re killin’ it today, Glannys ? Yup!
Ha! Again, other people’s comments helped.
No 19
I am not wearing it…that was my answer to Sheri G riddle
SOTD community project:
Do you want to sleep with me?
Voulez vous coucheravec moi?
ding! ding!
And autocorrect changed it to voulez boys couches avec moi.. luckily I caught it.
That works, from a certain point of view….
???
Voulez-Vous Coucher Avec Moi By Kilian
yes..I am easy..
As in easy clues for the guessing game… 😉
😀 😀
My answer was Etat Libre d’Orange, Yes I Do. Lol!
HA! Love it
Clever!
😉
Top notes include an evergreen shrub that grows on the islands of the Mediterranean and a familiar garden plant.
Jo Malone Blackberry and Bay?
No, but good guess!
Hermès Un Jardin en Méditerranée
Another good guess, but no.
Corsica Furiosa?
You got it!
I bet that’s it!
Miller Harris Vetiver Bourbon. I’ll play on Friday. Otherwise I will tax my brain too much.
Seriously, BobH broke my brain first thing. I’m done for the day.
?
Doing a little bit of running around today with my mother. Hopefully I can actually get my father’s birthday gift done today. It just got out off and put off and now it’s down to the wire. Wearing Lyric body butter today. It’s not hot out but humid.
Good luck, hope you found the right gift!
After the record breaking heatwave last week (well into the 100s, almost 105) temperatures have dropped and we are back to a quite cool summer (68 degrees and some rain).
I am wearing MAAI today.
And ive been toying around with some colour pencils. Amazing how they differ in feel and structure.
Ha, totally forgot about the CP. Sorry.
My SotD would be a tough one…..
It smells like a bed left behind by two lovers who wore jasmine and tuberose. Haha.
that may sound not too attractive, but its such an amazing scent…. I love it.
Jean Patou Joy?
Nope, it was MAAI and I already mentioned it in my post above ?
Oh silly me!
I like soft, waxy pencils rather than pastel dry ones. I still have a tin of caran d’ache pencils my granny sent me from Switzerland in the early 79s and my Lakeland pencils from the 60s. You have inspired me to do some drawing today!
Oooh, I really like Caran d’Ache pencils. I also hear good things about the Faber-Castell Polychromos line.
pencil porn
Polychromos are gorgeous as well, they are oil based instead of wax based. They seem somewhat harder than Luminance or Karismas (see my other reply to Kanuka as well)
I was the lucky receiver of some gift cards for art supplies last month, so I now have a set of Polychromos. ?
I had 4 black pencils:
Caran d’Ache Luminance
Faber Castell Polychromos
Derwent Lightfast
Berol KarismaColor (they are out of production but I still have the set my parents gifted me years and years ago)
Id say Polychromos is the hardest and best suited for detailed work.
Lightfast and Karisma are much alike, very intense colours, somewhat soft, I slightly preferred them for filling in bigger areas.
Luminance is somewhere in between Polychromos and Lightfast.
They are all great and a joy to use, but Id have to work longer with them to give a more detailed verdict ?
I use Derwent graphics for sketching and the polychromos for colouring and the caran d’ache for pencil/watercolour
They sound like they would be fabulous Eye Pencils as well. The names are gorgeous enough.
Wow, that’s quite the temperature drop you folks had!
Sledgehammer Week proceeds… this one should not be too hard to guess. There are lots of rose/patchouli scents out there, but this one’s the best in my book. And this dame can certainly fill a room!
This is one of the very few scents I’ve identified in the wild, and both times I sniffed it was at the San Francisco Symphony. Wonder if it was the same person both times… I never did pin down the wearer.
Portrait of a Lady?
Got it the first try!
POAL definitely fits in the Sledgehammer category for me!
I’m wearing CdG2… I noticed as I went to log it in Basenotes that it was released in 1999, a few years before I got into perfume. It is pretty interesting now, but boy must it have seemed original then!
Oh you smell great! Underappreciated gem.
My sotd is from a french lingerie house. I’m pretty sure I’m the only person that wears it. I smell like ivory soap and violets. You have to pronounce it’s name in french, otherwise it sounds like you’re looking for a place to sleep.
May Tress! Agent Provocateur
You know it, lady!
Haha great description!
Thanks!
I like that one too. I hope your day goes well up there in the warm!
I really like it too! I’m loving every bit of the heat, and dry roads!
I am wearing a perfume that is also the name of a real novel that almost no one has ever read.
Did not know there was a perfume called Finnegan’s Wake!
Ha! my husband has read Finnegan’s Wake, so no (but excellent comment as my husband is a literary masochist!!)
The notes of that one would be cedar and whiskey!
You or Someone Like You?
YES! Well done. I found a copy for sale yesterday on B & N that was used, formerly from a library. The notes for the sale said, and I quote: NOT CHECKED OUT AT ALL OR HARDLY AT ALL. VERY FINE CONDITION WITH MINIMAL LIBRARY MARKINGS.
Ha! Ex-library books have so much character. I used to work at a used book shop and you never knew when you might find an interesting old receipt, photo, bookmark, ticket stub, candy wrapper, etc. tucked between the pages.
I got a used copy of Grouch Marx’s autobiography “Grouch and Me”, and there were old newspaper clippings with mentions of Groucho in there, as well as a retrieval stub for the owner’s fur held in cold storage somewhere. Definitely of an era (it was from the late 50s, I think)!
What a great find! I once found a Disney World ticket stub from the 80s inside a scifi novel.
And fragrancenet is selling a 100 ml of it for 31$.
Ha I love the library’s note.
Promesse de l’Aube?
Who knew? (French speakers, obviously!) I was totally ignorant of Romain Gary’s entire oeuvre!
I think he is actually a very good writer, born in what is now Lithuania, he moved to France in his early teens.
He is the only French writer to have won the Prix Goncourt twice. Promesse is a stunning book (and a lovely fragrance).
I’ll see if I can find the novel today when I am at the library
Obviously you’re talking about Faulkner, and the perfume would be A Rose for Emily.
… if there were a perfume by that name 😉
Hah! Excellent choice. I never even finished The Sound and the Fury. He is definitely a writer who’s work is more admired than read!
I would have guessed Julien Gracq’s Rivage des Syrtes.
Has there been a CP of perfumes sharing names with novels? Portrait of a Lady, Candide…must be heaps
We need a Moby Dick scent!
Funny, I had exactly the same thought
Just saw an ad for Zoologist’s new perfume on Facebook. It’s an opportunity to blind buy a new one where the animal isn’t specified, but it lists ambergris, so now I’m speculating!
Name of a state or foresty scent atypically tagged to a different house than the perfumer’s own. Only 50 bottles were made so once it’s gone, it’s gone!
Colorado!
Excellent A+++!
Colorado
You got it but you’re one minute behind therabbitsflower!
It was comment free but I guess my old fingers didn’t type fast enough ?
My scent perfectly evokes a current movie.
Hopefully it’s not “Crawl.” 😉
Hah! Zoologist’s Alligator….
Although, I would add the translated name of the perfume predates the movie by a few years.
And probably not “Mike Wallace is Here”, lol. I’m still stumped but googling current movies, I did find this one and I want to see it!
This one has me confounded. Let us know what it is!
An atypical rendition of Provence’s best known flower by a house that the owner likes to compare to the Gallimard publishing house.
Music for a While?
Yep! You got it in one. Do you like it? It’s my third try and I think I’m smitten.
Sadly it didn’t work at all for me, even though I like all the listed notes. Oh well, money saved!
You guys are all so clever (looking at you in particular, BobH!) Mine is easy. Here I am, talking to my sotd:
“Hey, don’t eat my sweaters!”
Moth, Zoologist!
Yes, of course 🙂
Lol Moth?
Yep, BobH got it!
Bob clearly spends more time doing Sunday crossword puzzles than I do! (Or perhaps the NYT Friday…)
Ha! I love cryptic crosswords…
Me too, Bob! Is your clue today a cryptic? I thought it might be… but if so it’s a tough one!
Oh yes…
And there’s at least one in every crossword (hint, hint!)
The NST Friday!
I’d rather try to guess the perfumes of others today than come up for a clue for mine. I’m wearing Une Rose, and even though I swapped for my travel spray last year, this is my first real wearing. Crazy, I know. I had only dabbed a tiny bit on from a sample in the past. I had to do tiny sprays and very few of them because it is strong! I love the fruity, honeyed aspect of Turkish rose.
Ah, you smell fantastic! And that is crazy that you waited so long!
I know. I’m weird!
If so, then you have company. I’ve done the same thing.
We can be weird together! I also have too much perfume. I’m a broken record there to encourage myself to part with more and buy less.
You smell gorgeous! And I’m with you on the guessing (rather than creating ?)!
Thank you!
We embrasser this way in the English-speaking world, too…
Is there a perfume called French Kiss? If so, that!
Indeed there is!
French Kiss.
Guerlain or Tokyo Milk…
The Guerlain 🙂
Good morning, friends. It’s my birthday! I turn 32 today. I haven’t turned a new power of two for half my life! (Snerk.)
I’m wearing a scent from a house many people think is in decline. It’s centered around a precious, strong-smelling wood, and the name references a city in the country of my ethnic origin. I got my bottle in Paris, since it’s not easy to get this bottle in the US.
Happy Birthday!
Thank you, lillyjo!
Happiest of birthdays! Are you wearing Mysore Sandalwood?
Thank you! I see below that you meant Santal de Mysore, and you are precisely right 🙂
Happy birthday! I’m guessing Santal de Mysore as well.
Oops it would help if I got the name right.
Thank you, austenfan! Ding ding ding!
Many happy returns!
Thanks, Aurora!
Happy birthday!
Thanks, cazaubon!
Happy Birthday!
Thank you, BobH!
Happy Birthday!!
Thanks, Petunia 🙂
Jaipur by Boucheron?
Happy Birthday
Santal by Fragonard Perfumes
It is Santal de Mysore, actually–austenfan and trf got it above 🙂 And I WISH I had grabbed a bottle of Santal Cardamome by Fragonard the last time I was in Paris. Sigh.
(And thanks!)
Happy happy birthday, Koyel!
Thank you, holyneroli <3
Happy Birthday!
Thanks, Glannys!
Happy birthday! No guess from me.
Thanks, LizzieB 🙂 I am terrible at this guessing game, but I so love to play! This is one of my favorite CPs!
Hope it is a perfect birthday Koyel!
Thanks, Robin! Right now, I am sitting in the sunshine with my fiance drinking what he has dubbed a Birthday Martini 🙂 pretty darn perfect, imo!
Happy Birthday Koyel!! Hope you have a wonderful day!
Thanks, Laura 🙂 it has been a wonderful day! (With a frankly deplorably small amount of work. Oops!)
Happiest of birthdays to you! Any celebration plans?
Thank you, Elisa P! Oh, yes. I am drinking a Birthday Martini (something chocolate, hazelnutty, and rimmed with sprinkles), and soon I will eat dumplings and cake 🙂 Thanks for asking! My plans are very food-based!
Happy birthday!
Thank you, tannina!
Happy birthday youngster! Enjoy being 32
Hehehe. Thanks, Kanuka! I’ve got to say, my recent health problems (mostly related to my feet and hands, with a light sprinkling of knee pain) have made it so that I am definitely appreciating my youth!
Happy birthday, Koyel! I am guessless.
Thanks, Nancyleandros! It’s SL Santal de Mysore 🙂 it smells sooooo good!
Happy Birthday, Koyel!
Thank you, Holly!
Happy Birthday, nerd! 🙂
Hahaha. Takes one to know one 🙂 Thanks!
(You know, my fiance is the one who turned to me and said, “Congratulations on your new bit!”)
Happy birthday! Have a happy and healthy year.
Thank you, sistine!
Dior Oud Ispahan?
Totally good guess, though the wood is sandalwood (not oud) and my family is from India (not Iran). But does anyone say Dior is in decline?!
Yes, later I thought that sandalwood is much more likely. I saw comments that Dior has a great history, but its perfume branch is not so prolific now – at least not on the scale of Chanel and Guerlain.
Happy birthday! ?
Thanks, Jiji! Soon I will be chomping down on cake 🙂
Happy Scented Birthday, Koyel! ?????
Thank you, Jalapeno! What is that penultimate emoji? (The rest look quite apropos!)
It is a confetti ball. They’re used to celebrate events in Japan. Kind of like cutting a ribbon here in the US.
Happy Birthday, Koyel!
Thank you, hajusuuri <3
Waves!
How is it the end of July?!
Am in Molinard Jasmin.
I always associate that fragrance with you ?
Oh gorsh! *blushes*
Seriously, how??? Summer always whips by.
I know! So much to enjoy about summer, so little time!
Just realised it’s August today! That was fast. I bet you smell beautiful
???
I forgot!
It is crazy how summer just goes like that! And I really like Molinard in general and the soliflore series in particular.
I bought a bottle of that last week in Dallas. It’s so gorgeous! You smell great.
Yay!
Thank you- and I hope you enjoy the scent. My big purple bottle has lasted a LONG time- and there has been no turning of the scent at all.
The first word of my perfume is a color and Chopin is the composer of many of the second word.
Rouge Nocturne?
Yes kpaint! I adore the old fashioned patchouli in this one and waited long to get a bottle at a good price.
Still hot and humid, still entertaining out of town guests. Hiram Green Dilettante is making everything more bearable.
Thank you, Hiram Green 🙂
You smell awesome! I may wear it this week as well, I love all of it but mostly the phase that starts after 4-6 hours.
Doing research for a quick trip to NYC and happened to notice that the New Museum sells two perfumes:
“Aspects of is a series of contemporary fragrances created exclusively for and in response to the NEW MUSEUM by the perfumery Folie À Plusieurs (Berlin/New York) and the perfumers from Mark Buxton Studios (Paris), the legendary Comme Des Garçons perfumer Mark Buxton and David Chieze.
“These perfumes seek to emotionally and texturally render various aspects of the NEW MUSEUM into the medium of fragrance.”
https://www.newmuseumstore.org/new/aspects-of-new-museum-fragrance
That sounds interesting. Do you have exciting plans for NY? Bon voyage.
Brooklyn is hosting Lou Reed Tai Chi Day in Prospect Park this weekend. And, just by chance, I’ll also be around the corner from niche fragrance boutique Twisted Lily, so I’ll check out the latest.
Big City life…sigh.
Lou Reed Tai Chi Day!! How wonderful.
Oh, wow! You really culled some interesting events here!
My SOTD is part of a line that is generally unpopular with perfumistas but is loved by bees and slyphs.
Kenzo Flower?
No but good guess! Wrong house.
Byredo Flowehead?
No, great guess!
Think honeyed florals and Tinker Bell… ?♀️
Marc Jacob’s Daisy? I have no idea what bees and slyphs prefer ?
? This french house is hugely popular but this particular line is not.
Ah, AA Flora Nymphea!
Yes! Elisa wins!
? I think I’ve only ever seen you mention that ine.
Dior Gris Montaigne?
Thanks for guessing!
Seriously, my worse guess ever! Lol, as soon as I posted I laughed at myself.
Guerlain bee bottles something something…This CP is highlighting my woeful knowledge of perfumes
??
Recently reissued big white floral
Velvet Gardenia?
Yep
Jour d’Hermes today. Can not believe that it is almost August! This summer is flying by. ?
Yes it is.
I’m wearing another vanilla scent today. This one is by my all-time favourite perfumer and its notes are few and simple. It’s expensive and borderline gourmand. I just have a Luckyscent small sample and dabbed it, but it’s potent. I will not add this to my FB list or put it onto the top of my vanilla favourites list.
Tihota?
Yup!
Yay!
It’s a bitterly cold morning as we’re being blasted by southerlies from the sub-Antarctic. Still too dark to see if we have snow on the hills but yesterday the sky was wonderfully dynamic with rain, huge banks of clouds, then ribbons of sunlight. All the sparrows huddled up next to the windows and I watched a sleek mouse leave the dog kennel looking for scraps. I am wearing Vierge de Fer which is has a sweet clarity in winter whereas in summer it is slightly sticky like syrup. This kind of weather makes you feel alive somehow.
If you were my local meteorologist, I could develop a whole new outlook on winter.
You would like it. It’s the kind of cold weather that leaves your skin feeling tingly and makes your eyes water…and then you come inside and light a candle and settle down in a nice cosy room
Also, we don’t get your crazy snow storms where I live so the weather isn’t so scary
Yeah, I wouldn’t mind so much if it weren’t for the massive amounts of snow and ice, it is really scary.
Yes, it does sound bracing, and then the part about coming inside where it’s cozy sounds so nice. I’ve been binge-watching he Icelandic thriller Trapped on Amazon Prime, and have never seen anything that looked so cold. Gorgeous, too.
I agree with lillyjo. Love your descriptive posts.
Swoon. That sounds like my kind of weather!
A cup of tea with the dragon.
You know the perfume I’m sure.
Winter palace?
Indeed
My scent smells like vanilla and bergamot and mint and is named like a capital in Europe. Sadly I don’t have the vintage, which is supposed more floriental.
Roma?
You got it!
I had a small bottle of the more current stuff which I found very pleasant, but always wanted to smell the vintage which people seemed to rave about.
I’m in L’Artisan 9 Arcana Rosa, from a sample. It has some cumin that I didn’t notice on the last wear, so I’m less enthusiastic about it. But that’s okay, I have other spicy roses to enjoy.
Hubster’s birthday today, will make cherry cobbler for him later. Made baked oatmeal this morning…subbed applesauce for melted butter and used only half the sweetness that was called for. It still turned out PDG. ?
I looove baked oatmeal and cherry cobbler sounds pretty great too. Your lucky hubs!
Happy birthday ??? to your hubby!!! Cherry cobbler sounds delicious ?
Both the oatmeal and the cherry cobbler sound delicious! ? Happy Birthday wishes sent for your hubby.
Happy Birthday to your husband!
Is it mostly a boozy perfume? Is it more of a dried fruit scent? I am seeing a year.
I see it as both and am enjoying it.
One of Frapin scents? 1270 or 1697.
An apparition in an arid ecosystem.
L’Air du Desert Marocain?
No wait. Mojave Ghost!
Darn, you’re good Glannys!
Thank you! Still no idea wht you SOTD is though. 🙂
Correct!
Tomorrow is ???
🙂
And I remembered!!!!
I NEED good fortune this month?
Yes on the Frapin. The one I have on is 1270.
Sotd is a mainstream marshmallow intense…and probably too gourmand for the heat.
Dior Poison Girl EdP?
D & G Intense for Women:).
Yikes, I’m late today! This was just one of those days where a bunch of little things (and a couple not-so-little) came crashing into each other, and thoroughly derailed my schedule. So, no riddles today.
SOTD = TF Orchid Soleil, from the sample stash. Summer-y floral goodness!
Sorry for all the crashing, Jalapeno.
You do smell fabulous!
Thanks, lillyjo! Most of the stuff was just annoying and time consuming. I’m gonna hope that it’s all over and done with, and I won’t have to deal with anything like that tomorrow.
Probably waay to late for guessing, but I’m in a celebrity fragrance that gets compared to something that is mentioned from time to time on NST. And it contains subtle notes of fruit which are currently in season.
I hope somebody smarter than me comes along Gail!
Another clue! Also is a singer and has a great cosmetic line.
Ah! The line is Rihanna. Is the scent Rogue?
You got it!!
Nice, Jalapeno!
Silver Iris, the pretty bottle with the leather cover-thing. Beautiful fragrance. Also trying Midnight Datura. Oh Donatella….
Well if I had only known I’d have worn Io or Timbre Chris Rusak or Idlywild which all remind me of the California, terrain and high desert. But I went rogue and grabbed Feu Secret and put it on immediately. I like this. Iris.nice woody dry down. What a lovely surprise.
