Lazy weekend poll ~ heat wave / cold snap

Posted by Robin on 20 July 2019 219 Comments

It's hot out there folks, at least in my neck of the woods. (And we woke to no power this morning, but happily it is already restored.)

So our weather-related game for today:

Name your favorite fragrance for extreme heat, and then your favorite fragrance for extreme cold.

Or, as always, just talk about something else.

Nothing to say, really, just wanted to be the first to comment for a change! LOL. It is hot out there, but it wouldn’t be summer without one really good heat wave. Stay cool!

Also, glad you got power back, Robin. Part of the a/c system at work broke down but they got on that right away (for a change).

It was SOHOT yesterday but today it’s cool and rainy! the magic of the north. I’m cozy in Burning Leaves. I both love and hate my husband for taking one sniff and pointing out that it smells like ketchup, which I now can’t un-notice.

EXTREME HEAT: Eau du Sud, Dasein Summer, The Pour un Ete
EXTREME COLD: Chinchilla, Bois des Iles, Habanita

I have gotten ketchup from a disappointingly large number of perfumes. I wonder what that note is supposed to be? That kind of fishy, curdled, savory-sour note?

My favorite heat wave perfumes are (it’s a tie) Anisia Bella by Guerlain, and AG’s Mandragore. Both are bitter and herbal, like a good tonic water on ice. For cold days I really like the original Gucci Pour Homme, but a newer take would be Olfactive Studio’s Woody Mood. A rich, classic oriental is quite nice, too.

OMG! The heat is really terrifying here! Heat index will be 115 later this afternoon. I am working today. Later on, I will run few errands and stay inside for the rest of the day. I cannot wear any real perfumes with this temperatures, so I am wearing tons of Jean Nate, which has been reapplied many times already. After getting back home and taking another shower I will test some samples.
Have a nice weekend everyone and stay cool and hydrated!

That’s what perfume does best! Over here, we’ve had high heat, but enough storminess that it’s been cloudy and windy, so it doesn’t feel that horrible. I really don’t want to open the next electric bill though!

My husband has been working on an outside project the past few days. After his shower last night I told him I had a treat and splashed him with cold Jean Nate; unf he has really sensitive skin and he turned beet red immediately. Said he felt like he’d been doused in Listerine ? and had to jump back in the shower to rinse it off ? live and learn. I love it, myself.

Regina I am strange in that I really enjoy flip flopping my seasonal scents. In the winter my skin and Mr Marzipan’s skin amp up the lavender absolute in First Cut and it’s gorgeous. First Cut and Caron Pour Un Homme are catnip for me when the Mister wears them. And they are the only two he wears FOR ME ???

I’ve occasionally been playing “opposite season” this summer by wearing some of my cold weather perfumes, and they’ve been really gorgeous in the heat. It’s as if there is yet another layer to them, that only reveals itself when it’s quite warm.

SOTD is Calligraphy Rose, for a strong blast of jammy, spicy, rosy goodness.

My favorite “heavy” scent to wear in summer is L’Air du Desert Marocain. There’s some kind of magic that happens when its dry spiciness meets summer heat and humidity.

Lots of practice with cold weather scents here in Nova Scotia!! Mitzah, Coromandel and La Myrrhe are specific favourites.
For the steamy weather we are currently experiencing ( 42 C! ) I am a huge fan of Guerlain Herba Fresca and Lutens Encens et Lavande.

Cold: Organza Indecence, any iris perfumes, and somewhat strangely, Rose Ikebana.

OMG, so freaking hot out. And the humidity doesn’t help. I went out very early in the morning to pick apple mint to make mint tea, and the temperature was already nearly 80. I don’t think it got as hot in the area we live in as it did in Philadelphia itself.

For the rose-growing folks — my reblooming roses are doing their thing. ‘Teasing Georgia’ has several flowers, and so does ‘Mme. Isaac Pereire.’ I picked one of each of those to enjoy their different but both lovely fragrances inside the house.

I’ve read about the perfume Rose Jacqueminot, and I’m curious if there are any old accounts about whether it smelled like the rose ‘General Jacqueminot.’ I’d love a perfume that smells like ‘Mme. Isaac Pereire.’ It’s got a strong and delicious raspberry-rose fragrance.

This summer I’ve really been enjoying Orange Sanguine, also Terracotta, which is my sotd. For cold weather, Coco, and Black Orchid. If I still had it, original Opium would probably be my first choice in extreme cold. We had crazy storms overnight, thankfully, I kept power. More expected tonight. Back to regular summer tomorrow.

Ooh I love these weekend polls, I always get some good ideas of more things I want to try!
Extreme heat: Un Jardin Mediterranee, Le Labo Bergamote 22, Assam of India. Still in search of the perfect lemon, I think I need to revisit Eau de Hadrien.
Extreme cold: vintage Obsession, Casmir!, Le Labo Labdanum 18.

Sotd is Chanel 1932, from a sample. This is really pretty, it’s like Eau Premiere and Beige had a baby, lol. And now we see why I don’t write perfume reviews.?
Pretty, and work friendly. (I think) Today is my Monday. Four days, 48 hours, and then I’m on vacation for two weeks. I will power through.

I think that’s a great way to review a perfume, particularly here among folks who have likely encountered all of the “parent” perfumes. 🙂 In fact, you could spend the next few weeks posting your SOTD in that form, or we could use it for a Community Project! I’m wearing Calligraphy Rose today, and “it’s like Lush Rose Jam and Hermes Ambre Narguile had a baby….”

Robin, love the pug in a pool photo, glad you have power again.
I learnt from the comments that there is a heatwave in some part of the US, here it will hot up next week, relatively speaking, 34C instead of 20-25 this week.

In the heat: Eau de Rochas and CD Eau Fraiche, these two I can’t be without, also in no particular order, Eau Dynamisante, Liz Earle No 1, Carthusia Mediterraneo, Hermes Un Jardin sur le Nil, Apres la Mousson (when in Provence), AP Timbuktu, Fragonard Eau de Fleur d’Oranger, Quartz de Molyneux, Caron Eau de Reglisse and Guerlain AA Anisia Bella which Masha listed already, in fact all my AA qualify even Winter Delice sometimes, Nuxe Prodigieux le Parfum, Bronze Goddess, Shalimar EDC and sometimes EDT

In the cold (I will be forgetting many as they are in storage) but among my most loved: Shalimar EDP PDT and parfum, Must de Cartier, SL Daim Blond and Un Bois Vanille, Stendhal Ambre Sublime, Laura Mercier Lumiere d’Ambre.

I did not check in yesterday, so today I’m wearing Jo Loves Red Truffle, my one Jo Loves, a fig I enjoy quite a bit (I gave my brother Green Orange and Coriander for Xmas).

Totally with you about Eau de Rochas, and although it is mostly citrus at first it develops into a citrus chypre later on, glad you agree about Shalimar edc. Hoping you remain cool too 🙂

Glad to see a mention of Eau Dynamisante! I just sampled it again yesterday and it’s so nice. All the hedione reminds me of Eau Sauvage, which is another summer favorite of mine.

So happy you approve of Eau Dynamisante! It is such a classic, the Liz Earle No 1 shares some aspects and is longer lasting, I haven’t smelled Eau Sauvage in a long time, I remember that it was so distinctive, and should really revisit since it is a favorite of yours.

First of all, thanks for the kind birthday wishes yesterday for my mother 🙂
For extreme heat: cold Jean Nate, newly rediscovered CK One, En Voyage Go Ask Alice, Messe di Minuit, Seville l’Aube.
For extreme cold: Coromandel, Coco, Obsession, Les Nereides Imperial Opoponax & Patchouli Antique, DSH Inner Sanctum.
But I like to mix it up, too – Donna Karan Gold smells wonderful in the heat even though it’s heavy; Gris Clair is my favorite rainy day perfume in both heat and cold, Monyette Paris is just the thing on a cold day in February when you just can’t take another icy day.
Sotd is Jo Malone Sweet Lime and Cedar over No 5 body powder.

Hello everyone! Parents are packing for holidays – they’ll be leaving for Crete in a couple of hours so there’s a little bit of a mayhem at home right now so that they don’t forget to pack anything.

I’m wearing Santa Maria Novella Citta di Kyoto. In 29*C that we have today it feels nice and refreshing, like iris and violet lost in a bamboo forest.

I made quite a nice discovery, or more like re-discovery. For a long time I had a pen of Atelier Cologne Jasmin Angelique in my drawer. I got it in a swap as a freebie but when I smelled it I didn’t like it. I gave it a try today and surprise – pretty enjoyable! Just shows how tastes can change.

Perfume for the heat would be Atelier Cologne Cedrat Enivrant or Eau d’Italie Acqua Decima.
Perfume for the cold would be MFK Grand Soir, Parfum d’Empire Cuir Ottoman, for example.

    SotD = Cologne du 68

Haven’t worn this one in a while. I like it best on a warmish day, tho in heat it blooms gently and beautifully. There’s vanilla in there, and Guerlain knows vanilla. 😀

For really hot weather I spritz colognes all day long. I love 4711 and Eau de Guerlain. Also Eau de Fleurs de Cedrat. It’s the most delightful citrus scent but goes pfffffft-bye-bye after a few minutes. I’ll wear it next Friday for the CP!

In the cold I love Theorema and Ambre Narguile, both are delicious and spicy.

And there’s always my beloved Eau des Merveilles. In any weather it’s magic for me. In heat I smell more citrus, in cold I smell more woods. Delightful!

Hope everyone has a fantastic weekend. You! Smell! Great! 😉

I think you smell great in Cologne du 68! And I’m realizing I really need to try all the Guerlain colognes: Fleurs du Cedrat, Imperiale, and du Coq. I tried Eau de Guerlain, but I didn’t love that one. Mint is pretty hot or miss for me. The others may work better since there’s no mint to be found.

This summer I’ve been wearing mostly florals and I enjoy Carnal Flower, Eau de Magnolia, LL Ylang 49, Arquiste Ella, TDC Kashan Rose, CdG Lily especially in the heat.

Winter is more challenging since I start getting tired of the denser stuff by the time Fall is over. I can’t even remember what I wore a lot this winter except I became orange blossom-obsessed and wore PdN Neroli Intense a lot, lol.

I’ll be drumming with my group at an event that I’m excited about tonight and we’re rehearsing in a park first later, which is less exciting ?

Hot weather: sweet tropical scents or florals and suntan lotion perfumes that can hold up to the heat like Orchid Soleil, Eau de Soleil Blanc, Terracotta (planning to wear my new decant on a hot today tomorrow thanks to Lizzie) plus Hermes Neroli Dore, Apres la Mousson, Mediterranee, Vanille Galante, Jour Absolu.

Cold weather: powdery rich ambers like Montale Blue Amber, leathers like Cuir Ottoman, and wood pudding like Organza Indecence.

This morning I’ve retested a few perfumes – Slumberhouse Grev because of Angela’s review, Maria Candida Gentile Gershwin because of seeing it on sale at Twisted Lily, and Eris Belle du Jour just because. I like the first two but don’t need more than what I have and do not like BdJ. Have had a nice lazy morning and breakfast at home. Watching a fun horror movie from the 70s, Horror Express. There’s a big music festival (not free) in the main part of my neighborhood that I’ll be avoiding, so we probably won’t stray too far today. Planning to wear Vetiver Extraordinaire after my shower. Tomorrow will be hot, though not nearly as hot as many parts of the US, and we’ll be going over to my aunt and uncle’s for brunch on their deck, which looks across Elliot Bay to downtown Seattle. That should be a really nice way to spend the morning and early afternoon. I’ll probably wear an airy dress with Terracotta.

Well, I started out the morning in Elixir Des Merveilles from the fabulous andshewaz and the freebie meet. I’m kinda wondering where it’s been all my life. I know I’ve tested it before, but I think it got lost in the clutter of Merveilles on the Sephora shelves. Man, I smell wonderful!

Received my Sucreabeille sample order, from the sale they ran a few weeks ago. I now have God Give Me the Confidence of an Average White Man on my left wrist, and Margaery Tyrell on my right. I smell like coffee and fruit.

Extreme heat: any of the 4711s
Extreme cold: Coco or Ambre Loup

I’m in one of my summer favorites today: Child Perfume. I’ve been reapplying a few dabs from my sample vial every few hours because I keep sweating it off! Child gets some comparisons to Kuumba Made Pikake Lei, so I picked up the Kuumba Made from Whole Foods and it is indeed a close dupe (and much more reasonably priced).

Scent of the day: Fresh Hesperides Grapefruit.

Scent last night: 4711 Lemon & Ginger cologne, from a Pixel split. (Thank you!) It’s much stronger than the body spray. I got a bit of lemon and then a good amount of ginger. I like the smell of ginger.

The folks were not as enthused by my experiments yesterday, including using mango soap that had been in a bag with spicy soaps for my bath. I think my nose was kind of dried out from the A/C, and that’s why I didn’t really get the rose scent from Lady Vengeance, either. I seem to just get the spicy part of a scent in those circumstances. Don’t get me wrong — I deeply appreciate having air conditioning in this weather.

I seem to be mostly a fan of lemon or grapefruit fragrances in this hot weather. For cold weather, perhaps the Demeter Fireplace or Gingerbread splashes, or some other sort of “baking spice” fragrance. I associate cookies with cold weather. 🙂

SOTD for most of the day was Jour d’Hermes. It was sweeter and woodier today than usual, and I’m wondering if it’s because of the heat. My cold weather go-to scents are things like Cuir Mauresque, Cuir Cannage, Cuir d’Iris (are you sensing a theme?), Feu Secret, and sometimes Cristalle to be contrarian. Hot weather favorites are things like Azemour les Oranges, Mediterraneo (I love that my autocomplete has learned that one), SMN Eva, Eau de Hadrien, and (again) Cristalle. And FM Eau de Magnolia. Yum.

Thinking about perfumes for the extremes makes me think of when I really prefer to wear perfume: I love perfume in the spring spring perfumes. So often, it’s cool in the morning and warm in the afternoon and you get to experience it multiple ways.

I also love putting on perfume before stepping outside on a breezy humid day— perfumes really bloom that way.

For hot hot – Atelier Cologne Cedrat Enivrant (also happens to be SOTD) and Profumum Roma Acqua Viva, among others.

For freezing cold – nothing better than Guerlain Cuir Beluga ?

Guys, I bought a spur of the moment SAMPLE of Les Daux de Chanel Paris-Riviera and I plan to pick it up today. Rumor has it that it is perfect for summer. I would like to split off some, up to 75 mLs of the 125mL bottle. Each mL comes out to $1.1. I will be using plain glass atomizers and new packaging. Exact cost will be determined based on your zipcode. The total will come out to approximately $16-$-17. Other quantities available. If interested, please email me (click on my username to get contact info). U.S. only and NST commenters only. Thank you!

        ?

I passed through Nordstrom and made it a point to stop by the Chanel counter. I was recently told it would not not be available until beginning of August. Silly people. They missed the opportunity to sell in-store to early Anniversary Sale shoppers. To express my dissatisfaction, I asked to smell it, then told the SA they lost a sale because I ordered mine online last night and I am in store to pick it up.

I feel like Nordstrom has been dropping the ball lately. Mine has little in the fragrance section besides Jo Malone and I was asking the SA about a set of minis and she said “it’s probably online” and turned to another shopper and said “I can help you here” and walked away from me. I. Was. Done.

For science, I opened my newly picked up bottle and spritzed away! It’s a light citrusy jasmine – nice in the heat. I peeked in Fragrantica and saw Basenotes of sandalwood and benzoin. If I get that eventually in the dry down, it would just add to the overall appeal. I think it is well done but not revolutionary. The Jasmines I can smell typically smell like moth balls, this one does not!

Using up the last bit of Dame Orange Flower today. Yesterday when I wore Terracotta to work, a coworker told me I smelled like a plant. I started naming off the notes, to figure out what they were smelling, and they said, ” no, just a plant” lol.
Turned off the air conditioning this morning, feels wonderful to open the windows ?

Iris Poudre today. In the cold Adorable Hubby loves this. Today, with temps above 80 and humidity approaching 100%, he didn’t notice it at all. But, I think I smell great! Eating plums that have been in the fridge, wondering if it is too early for a Tanqueray and tonic, my only hard alcohol drink, only consumed during heat waves when there is nothing else to do. 🙂

PSA Twisted Lily has a huge number of marked down perfumes, candles, etc. in their specials section. I’d been eyeing some marked down Maria Candida Gentile 15mls all week. Decided to buy them yesterday evening and suddenly the mark downs had grown from 120 items to 290. So I ended up with MCG Lady Day and Lankaran Forest (both blind buys), Masque Milano Romanza, and a handful of samples of clearance perfumes so I can see if I “need” anything else. A lot of the candles were tempting too, but I had to stick to perfume. Some of the candles are from Cire Trudon.

Yeah, I wonder what is going on too. Maybe TL is struggling and needs to pare down the lines they offer. I think I did not end up ordering a sample of Bendelirious though that is one I went back and forth on. I know I tried it years ago, and I think I passed my sample on a while back. Wondering if I’d like it more these days.

Stayed busy cleaning the house thoroughly yesterday. We’ve been gone the past three weekends in a row. We are neat in general but a deep cleaning was due. Wore Nicolaï Eau sOleil. I think it’s so pretty. May wear it again today after my workout/shower.

Taking it fairly easy today. Going to work out, then this evening cooking for some friends. They have a pup about the same age as Nacho so they’re bringing him for a puppy play date.

Also, I lean toward colognes, citrus, or beachy scents in summer. Colognes and citrus for the freshness and beachy/ tropical scents because it tricks me that the heat is because I’m in a tropical location. For super cold I love warm orientals. Though I’m all honesty I generally just wear whatever I’m in the mood for regardless of season or weather.

I’m having a fairly laid back Sunday. Walked the dog this morning and saw a couple of her buddies from the dog park on the walking trail.
SOTD = one spritz of Shalimar Light with many spritzes of Eau de Cologne Imperiale. Ahhh, colognes in the summer heat are wonderful. I’ve eaten breakfast and lunch, so I really cannot put off the gym any longer. ?

Mom is turning 80 tomorrow and we will have a small family gathering at my sister’s place later this afternoon. Next Saturday we will take her out for dinner and a Broadway show. We didn’t want to do it this weekend because of the heat. Thanks God this is the last day of this heat wave!

Happy Birthday to your mom. Really smart about waiting until next week to take her out – it is oppressive and brutal outside and I am doing nothing more strenuous than moving from air conditioned space to my car. Even with a sunshade and windows slightly rolled down, just going into the car parked out under the sun for 30 minutes was yuck. I saw some cars parked pretty far from the entrance under the shade of trees which helps in not cooking the car’s innards.

My favorite scents for warm weather are citrus or beachy/floral. Today I’m in YR My Green Summer; yesterday I wore M. Asam No.1, a lime centred fragrance to the golf course. It was a killer workout walking that course, mostly uphill all the way!

Cold weather scent faves are definitely Iris Silver Mist or Shalimar extrait. I will have to experiment a bit more with Guerlain Vetiver.

My hubby’s brother was in another golf tournament this weekend so he and his daughter stayed over at our place last night. His daughter (my niece) is also my budding perfumista; this morning she asked me for some perfume, anything fun. So I gave her my Guerlain Insolence to spray on; she smelled fantastic!

Definitely feeling wilted again today. My high temp ended up at 98F, while the heat index topped out at 110F today. Made grocery shopping unpleasant. I’m looking forward to the promised relatively cooler temps tomorrow!

Extreme heat perfumes: AG Ninfeo Mio, AG Encens Flamboyant, Prescriptives Calyx, Guerlain Terracotta, Tauer Au Coeur du Desert, Alaia EdP, and Diptyque Tempo.

Extreme cold perfumes: Chopard Casmir, JM Myrrh & Tonka, TM Alien EdP (especially good in subzero Fahrenheit temps), Tauer Incense Extreme, and TM Alien Absolue EdP. Might be forgetting some here…

SOTD = Bandit, from the sample stash and a lovely NSTer. Whoa Nelly! This is definitely leather! Might have been a bit much for the insane weather today, so I am definitely going to retry under other weather circumstances.
