Lazy weekend poll ~ whispering to Santa (or the gift-giving entity of your choice), 2018 edition

Posted by Robin on 24 November 2018 159 Comments

Our eleventh annual holiday gift poll. Here are the three questions:

What is the fragrance-related gift you’d most like to receive this year?

Let’s say you were going to ask for just one unsniffed fragrance this year, what would it be?

Are you giving any fragrance items for gifts this year, and if so, what?

My answers:

Probably one of this year's Diptyque holiday candles.

I am hankering after a bottle of Mad et Len Petits Papiers.

No. Over the past few years we have scaled back gift-giving in my family.

Easy answer to the first question: A perfect bottle of vintage Bandit by Piguet. Hey, a gurl can dream.

Unsniffed? Hmm… I’d choose Mandy Aftel’s re/release of Antique Ambergris in liquid form.

I’m giving quite the plethora of fragrance gifts this year! :) :)

Forgot to mention my SOTD: Holy Mountain by Apoteker Tepe, a gift decant from a friend. Thinking of this as Wholly Mountain, where it reminds me of the forest of my avian birth. Flying….

I wish I had bought a bottle of that when it was available. I have two of AT’s other perfumes, but didn’t get Holy Mountain or After the Flood and am sad.

I’m wearing Theoreeeeema today (my version of Alahiiiiine) and enjoying it thoroughly. It’s definitely a holiday fragrance for me (even though I wear it at other times).

    1) Under the tree for me: a LuckyScent gift card
    2) Under the radar (unsniffed): something unique like April Aromatics Calling All Angels or maybe Di Ser Mizu
    3) Under the tree for others: some C.O. Bigelow Lemon Hand Cream

The Di Ser perfumes that don’t cost a bijillion dollars are all very nice, if subtle. Good for unsniffed gifts!

Thanks! Have you tried Mizu? I’m curious if it’s citrus or herbal or floral–or all 3! LuckyScent is out of Mizu samples at the moment, waiting for them to offer it again.

Citrus and a bit herbal? All the ones I tried had a bit of light herbal ness.

I am expecting a bottle of one of 4711 Acqua Colonia scents that I can’t find in the US. My sister is travelling to Germany next week and asked if I wanted anything, so I gave her a list of the 4711s. Since I haven’t sniffed them and don’t know which she’ll choose that answers questions 1 and 2. I am thinking of giving her a selection of hand and body lotions.

Not wanting any more perfumes at the moment. We’ll see how long the lack of want lasts?

I’m in 7 Virtues Vetiver of Haiti today, courtesy of a very generous NSTer.

Just finished breakfast and off for a hike. The rain is looking like it might be done, so hoping we don’t get wet. The air is once again clear and comfortable to breathe.

    Have a fabulous weekend all!

The top of my want list is Thierry Mugler’s Chyprissime, but that needs to wait for an overseas trip, I haven’t been able to find a way to get it in New Zealand. Meanwhile, I’m thinking Santa might like to bring me Dusita’s Le Sillage Blanc.
Unsniffed – I’d take a punt on Fort and Manle’s Forty Thieves. I really like four of the eight in their discovery set, so that seems like good odds. I don’t actually have to take the risk, I ordered a sample from Luckyscent a couple of days ago :)
I’m the only fragrance addict in my immediate family, but I have got my eye open for nice soap for my mother.
I’ve just been watching some footage of fighting shoppers at Black Friday sales – wow!!!

SOTD LL Iris 39, because Petunia mentioned it yesterday.

    1) More incense! And this looks nice:
    https://www.bellocq.com/collections/accessories/products/copy-of-japanese-jin-koh-juzan-incense-aloeswood
or the Boy Smells Cinderose candle.

    2) None! Already broke my blind-buy rule recently, and it was a failure ?
(Lab on Fire And the World is Yours-
pretsky35 at the hawt male if you’re hankering to swap!)

3)Maybe candles or incense to friends who I know like that stuff.

I would love to get a big bottle of Le Labo Benjoin 19 this holiday but sadly it will have to wait until next year due to their stupid city exclusive deal of only making them available in September, boo hiss.

As for unsniffed, hmm, I force myself to sample everything now after a few disastrous and expensive blind buy failures. But if I were going to take a flyer with santa’s money, I’d get a bottle of Roja Perfumes A Goodnight Kiss.

I am giving a bottle of Lavanila and a bottle of Kenzo Flower to my two nieces.

As for my scent of the day, it’s Masque Milano Tango.

A Goodnight Kiss is definitely one to ask for on Santa’s money, not your own! I have the 7.5 mL Discovery Atomizer, which will probably be enough to last me, as I have so many perfumes, so it is OK if I can only wear it once in a while. If, however, you told me that I had to choose 10 perfumes to wear for the rest of my life, but that they would be provided for me at no charge to me, I would probably choose that one as one of the 10. It is really beautiful.

    1. A decant of FM Iris Poudre to replace the one I dropped and broke into pieces few weeks ago. Or a full bottle of John Galliano EdP, which is a no-brainer, office friendly, cozy vanilla iris scent. I thunked the last of my sample this morning.

    2. The new Hiram Green Hyde.

    3. No fragrance related gift planned for anyone.

Like Robin, the fragrance-related gift I’d most like to receive is a candle – either a Jo Malone or a Diptyque, in some forest-y scent. If SSS were still (or is ever back) in business, a Winter Woods or Pacific Forest candle would be just the thing. My unsniffed wish is for Olfactive Studios Autoportrait – I think I might have missed my chance on that one. And I don’t think I will be giving giving any scented gifts this year – I seem to be gravitating toward warm-and-cozy items for gifting. It isn’t even that cold here yet, but chunky knits and firesides seem very attractive all of a sudden. In that vein, my SOTM is SSS Incense Pure.

    1. One of those Malle beautiful bottles, probably Lipstick Rose since I don’t own it. I like Lipstick Rose, but I have to admit the bottle porn is in play here as well.
    2. Hyde, although I do have a tiny sample and had a quick whiff. Something really unsniffed. Vintage Mitsouko. Just so I could know.
    3. I may get some Hiram Green travel sprays for scent-loving friends. They are so good and the price isn’t bad. I always worry about picking perfumes for people though as we are all so different in what we like and what smells “right” on a particular person . . .

    2. Unsniffed: Cloonkeen Castana (I’m still miffed I never managed to procure a sample this past summer in Ireland).

    3. For others: My younger dd might be due for a fun little perfume – her older sister has found her love (Coco Mademoiselle). Also considering giving my dad perfume but he may just think I’ve lost my marbles.

Hello fragrant friends, haven’t posted in some time. Good to see you are all in fine and fun form!

I wish for a bell jar of Chergui. I have a full bottle backup in case the world ends but a bell jar would be…special.

Purchased the new DSH uptown booze or whatever it was called unsniffed. It had me at hello last week. I got a small one.

Not much in the way of gifting. Too many places to donate, especially in light of the fires here in CA. My sister and I bought those tickets to go on Safari in June, so we are not even visiting each other over holidays.

Been traveling weekly for work and so have been using decants, samples, travel rollers.

    1. There’s nothing on my wishlist at present–I stocked up last year on candles and body products, too.

    2. I’d like to smell Hyde. I’m batting about .500 with Hiram Green scents.

    3. My best friend’s husband wears Aramis and she would like him to change to something else. I might nip in to Sephora and snag a few samples for him.

It’s a Stash day here. So far I’ve been stabbed, pinched, splattered, and burned. Putting up the Christmas decorations apparently requires protective clothing in the future.

Wearing By Kilian Amber Oud and enjoying the absence of the latter in the composition.

    1. I can’t think of any perfume I’d like to add to my collection at the moment, but I wouldn’t refuse FM hand cream or some fancy candle.

    2. Nah, unsniffed I don’t want even a free bottle: too much disappointment when I don’t like it.

    3. Probably not. My vSO has more than enough (until I find something that he just has to have, of course). As to anybody else, probably no as well.

With these answers, can I even still be considered a perfumista? :)

That FM hand cream is extraordinary. I got my first tube as an expensive reward for myself, the next two were bought out of necessity as no other hand cream will do.

& I think your answers are exactly what most perfumistas come to…when you have a full and varied collection and you scratch your head and wonder “how will I even get a chance to wear what I already have”?

    1. MFK Petit Matin: I like it but it hasn’t made it to my full bottle list. If someone were to gift it to me, though, it would be very happily received.
    2. Seville a l’Aube – I haven’t had a chance to try it but it sounds amazing.
    3. No scented gifts planned this year, I’m trying to avoid being predictable. I gifted scented soaps, travel sprays and the like in previous years to quite a few a people.

Happy weekend everyone! I feel like this is the last weekend to take some time to relax before holiday craziness takes over every minute of our freetime.

    Great questions.
I have too much perfume but I’d still want a bottle of Serge Lutens ( not sure which one yet, too many I like).
Unsniffed, I’d try Kerosene Walk the sea.
I’m giving plenty fragrance this year, a set of the holiday candles from Diptique, the room fragrance from the same collection ( They are lovely!!), and looking for two elegant SL for my mother and sister in law… thinking of 5 O’clock and something from the Bois ones… alternatively Do Son from Diptique and Vanille Insensee from AC. I love buying fragrance, even when it’s not for me :)

I had high exspectations for the Kerosene, but it was just a nice white floral und not much of the sea, just minimal saltiness. Liked Heeleys Sel Marin better….

Thank you for the tip! Saltiness is hard to pull off or maybe I just don’t have the skin for it… I tried yesterday Jo Malone Sage and Sea Salt and don’t get it at all and I was quite disappointed in my chemistry with Hermessence Epice Marine as well. Will try the Heeleys!

As much as I would like to patronize Sears, the cash register checkout situation is abysmal 95% of the time. Like now. The cashiers look like they are moving in slow motion. There are never any managers to gauge the situation to add cashiers (there are 5 registers in a pod and there are only 2 cashiers). Were it not for a very specific scarf that my mom wanted, I would have abandoned the line 25 minutes ago. There were only 25 people ahead of me and no one looked like they had more than 5 items. There are still 10 people ahead of me so I still have a good 10-15 wait. All told, a 60 minute wait – no wonder Sears is going out of business. It took me less time to drive to the auto inspection center and complete the inspection than to pay for the scarves. Ridiculous!

Our Sears closed down a couple of year ago. There was hardly ever anyone in there except for the automotive and hardware departments, so I was actually surprised they lasted as long as they did. The lines you describe actually sound like our Walmart, though, which seems to be in no danger of closing. Always hordes of shoppers and never enough cashiers. I don’t go there myself if I can help it, as I have had frozen food thaw before I could get through the checkout line and get it home.

Not on topic for the poll, but I have encountered a fragrance crisis. SOTD earlier was 10 Corso Como. That seemed to have died down, so I went to put on something else and grabbed my bottle of Ormonde Jayne Woman. I sprayed it on, took a deep whiff, and–nothing! I can’t seem to smell it at all. I thought perhaps it was interacting with the 10 CC in an odd way, but I can’t smell it on paper either. I know it has a lot of Iso E Super, and that some people are anosmic to it, but it was never a problem for me before. Could something in the 10 CC have induced a temporary anosmia? I am hoping this condition is not permanent, as OJ Woman was one of my favorites for cool weather.

Tomorrow hubby and I will be going to an Elizabethan madrigal feast. I am thinking it wold be fun to wear my sample of Aftelier Antique Ambergris as it is period appropriate, being based on ingredients that definitely were used in perfumery in the 16th c. Not that we will be in period costume ourselves, but the performers will be. I bought the sample of this along with my rollerball of Alchemy, and now I am afraid a full-size purchase is unavoidable. Perhaps after Christmas? BTW, what would be the appropriate acronym for a full size of a solid perfume? FB doesn’t seem quite right, as solids don’t come in bottles, but in compacts. Should it be FC, or is FB generic for a full size regardless of form?

No idea about the OJ issue. I would just try again on another day. As for the solid perfume, perhaps full size would work? Since it isn’t a bottle.

Might actually be that something in the 10CC induced “fragrance fatigue” and it has nothing to do with the OJ. Agree, try another day!

I am hoping that is the case. I could smell other things, just not the OJ. If 10 CC is going to affect me that way, it will probably end up getting swapped away.

    1. What is the fragrance-related gift you’d most like to receive this year?
The new flanker for Tiffany & Co. EDP; the bottle is gorgeous! I could also go for the red bottle of Chanel No. 5 L’Eau.

    2. Let’s say you were going to ask for just one unsniffed fragrance this year, what would it be?
    4160 Tuesdays’ Scenthusiasm

    3. Are you giving any fragrance items for gifts this year, and if so, what?
I’ll be giving my daughters some gift sets; a couple from Philosophy, maybe some Stash or DKNY Nectar Love, maybe breaking up some sets and mixing them up. They also love bath bombs, so I’ll give some of those.

Happy Saturday, friends! I love four-day weekends :) Just saw the second Fantastic Beasts movie, and my review is that I’ll have to suspend judgment until I can rewatch it with subtitles. Sheesh. I love Eddie Redmayne, but I CANNOT understand him. We are currently getting our Christmas tree. The sale is being conducted by literal eighth graders, which I know because they’re acting like eighth graders and are very, very loudly talking about their lives. I’m sure I was like that with my friends when I was that age, but I could not get out of there fast enough. On another note, they started singing the Backstreet Boys’s “I Want It That Way.” I wonder if they think it’s an oldie.

SOTD was Histoire d’Orangers. I’d love a bottle of Heeley Note de Yuzu or Cardinal. Unsniffed—probably Aftelier Ambergris or Alchemy! Presents—yep, all my Black Friday shopping was of smelly presents for people. I spent about $200 on Black Friday, but I got about $450 worth of stuff—that’s pretty great, right?

    2. Unsniffed: the new scent from Ormond Jayne, Privé. I generally like her fragrances and the ingredients sound very appealing.
    3. Gift items: maybe a Sicilian Tangerine Nest candle for my good friend. I see they’re on sale now for Black Friday–better buy one fast!

In other news: My SOTD yesterday was Mousse de Chene. It’s good in cold weather, as it has a more sweet note to it somehow.
Also: I took my mother antiquing yesterday to a small town in Indiana that has multiple very fun antique shops (Angola). She enjoys just browsing among old-timey objects that evoke memories. I made some small finds including a very beautiful “Jewel Collection” from Avon in perfect condition, all bottles full! It’s perfume oils and I looked it up; it was released in 1964!! A good buy, too. I’ve tried two of the oils so far and loved them both. Here’s a picture of it if anyone cares to look: https://www.flickr.com/photos/94283635@N00/31098264267/in/dateposted/. The little bottles are nestled in upside down, but if you take them out, each one has a little round cap on top.

H-Mart Customer (No) Service I waited almost 10 minutes before someone came by. The person who was supposed to be at the Customer Service desk was at an Express Lane attached to the (no) service area. I asked a worker twice to get someone to the desk — the 2nd time he said that is not his responsibility. Seriously? This trash talk would NEVER EVER happen at Wegmans.

I learned something though: the next time I’m there and no one is there, I will call the store – most of the time the phone is answered by someone in Customer Service and then I will hang up. The call will jolt Customer Service to wake up.

I think I’d like the Molten a Brown Muddled Plum body lotion, but even on sale is a bit difficult to justify, price-wise. I should just tell my husband I want a Diptyque Baies candle. I’ve been coveting a long time.

Not sure on unsniffed. Maybe the new 1997 scent by Smell Bent.

I’m trying to get my husband to dial back in our gift giving, but he loves Christmas shopping. He announced today that he’s almost out of many fragrances, so I’ll,have to see what to buy him. He loves the original Eau by SMN so maybe that. (We did pre Christmas gifts to each other…he got me some boots recently, and we bought him a down parka on sale this weekend.).

Wearing Lush Lust in an effort to wear more of my not-office-appropriate perfumes on the weekends. Pretty soon I’m heading to the Space Needle and Chihuly Museum with my visiting family and am dreading the weekend crowd.

    1. I’d take a bottle of Vol de Nuit parfum, but no one will ever give me a gift that expensive. If we’re being realistic, then maybe St. Clair First Cut.
    2. Aftelier Alchemy
    3. Not giving any scented gifts. Gift giving will be at a minimum this year.

    Happy chilly Sunday, all!

This morning I needed a spritz of Nicolai Cap Neroli to get out of bed, but showered that off. Now somewhat bathed in Dryad, after scoring one of the last bottles available at Tigerlilly. A sharp green blanket of IDGAF, it’s too cold, today. :)

Whooohoooo. Two most excellent things to report today. The first is that I do not love TF’s Lost Cherry, which is a huge relief. And the second is that we got a bright orange kitten who is a zooming, zipping, leaping, crashing tearaway, AND he apparently loves cantaloupe.

    In other news:

Fragrance-related gift . . . Not sure. I don’t have anything in particular on my wish list.

Just one unsniffed fragrance . . . well, if it were to fall into my lap: Guerlain’s Meteorites.

Giving . . . my son asked for Architects Club. I haven’t decided yet if I am going to get it for him. He also asked for college and I am not sure that we can afford both. ( I have several scented bookmarks leftover from last year that I may put in the books I give for the holidays.)

The kitten is exciting! In all my life I’ve had a lot of cats but never a kitten. Enjoy!

I liked the smell of Lost Cherry (cherry cough drops?), but I don’t really want to smell like it myself.

So cute!! Our orange kitty is now almost 19 years old. We got her when she was 1.

OMG, so cute! That’s one tuckered out kitty cat! Thanks for sharing. (Just started to follow you too).

I have loved orange tabbies since I was a kid. Our neighbours had one named Sidney; he had a perfect round circle of orange on a large white patch of his body. He was so mischevious!

ConCATulations on your LOT (Little Orange Terror). I’ve had a few kittens, and currently have a wild 5 month old puppy. Kiss your furniture goodbye.

Awww, congrats on the kitten! Love the gingers ? I’ve been getting my kitten fix at a friend’s who is fostering 4. I’ve had my 2 guys since they were 3 months old- I forget how exhausting they are!

Thank You to Ari for hosting a WONDERFUL event today at her shop hosting a Luca Turin book signing. I learned some important information from his talk and it is always SO nice to see familiar faces!
Good thing that I haven’t spent all my holiday perfume bucks just yet.
    Well Done Ari!!!

Giving (to others and myself); very tempted by the Maison Christian Dior lineup. Currently on holiday in Japan and the Dior stores here have the 40ml sizes(!!!) and priced at ¥11,500 (roughly $100 usd). Seems like a steal and the size is much more reasonable that the giant bottles that were available when I first purchased Oud Ispahan years ago.

Anyone familiar with the line as of recent? Seems like it’s grown considerably. May pick up a few to fill my stocking this year ;)
