Another lazy weekend open thread poll. Talk about anything you like — the fragrance you’re wearing today, the fragrance you sampled recently and found disappointing, whatever.
Or, ask a question about fragrance, then see if anyone else has asked a question that you can answer…

Good morning, everyone! I’m in CdG Sticky Cake, and it’s nice, but not much more than that. Added a spritz over the original spritz, and……meh.
The weather is strange, overcast but a little muggy and warmish. I’ll probably be in BFMV later on, as I’ve been craving it lately.
I hope everyone has a great weekend! 🙂
Now I can’t remember which one I liked from that series, but in general it was a great idea, but far from the best of CdG in terms of execution. They should redo it!
It’s a really nice gourmand – and what makes it stand out for me is that it’s not ‘stereotypical-CdG-incense-wood’ . I looove the Incense series but it’s nice to see gourmands and florals with CdG too! just a tad too sweet for me. I liked Nomad tea more. Great fun fragrances!
Agree, they overdid it on the wood and incense. Just seemed like their heart was not really in sweet, or they didn’t know how to evaluate what they were given by the perfumers or something.
hahaha yeah it’s a bit half-hearted in terms of polish 🙂
I liked Sticky Cake. I thought it was a interesting take on a gourmand. Well, I think you smelled great ????
Thanks! I have about 2.5mls of it, left in the 3ml atomizer. I’ll send it to you sometime this week if you’d like. ????
I am wearing Givenchy III today, and I do have a question: I bought this scent last year around this time at the Givenchy perfume boutique in Epcot/Disneyworld. This perfume, along with a few others, were in their own separate section, Les Parfums Mythiques. I also tried a few others, including L’Interdit, but chose Givenchy III as my scented souvenir. I recently have been seeing articles and advertisements for the new L’Interdit (2018). Does anyone know if Givenchy will discontinue the Les Parfums Mythiques version?
The new one does sound nice, and I will try it. But I did enjoy the older version from 2007, and I will purchase one eventually. If its still available.
I recently tried two new L’Artisan fragrances: Mandarina Corsica and Mont de Narcisse. Sadly I found both to be below my expectations. The narcissus one was way nicer anyway.
Today I’m in Aedes Cierge de Lune. The weather started to cool down, don’t think we can hope for 22*C any longer
Was curious about those, too bad!
Yeah…
Luca, thanks for relieving me of any urgency to rush out and try these. ????
Glad I could help
You can never go wrong with an Aedes perfume…I love them all.
SOTD = Hermes Myrrh Eglantine
Sadly, it still did not work for me. I don’t recall how I described it when I wore it over a month ago. Today, it is Sour Patch Kids meet day old root beer.
You gotta be in it to win it. $1.6B.
Sephora – I got my 20% off discount card for October 26-29. There’s another discount window November 2-5 although I’m not certain if the discount is the same across the board.
I will be back later to post my Splitmeet items in the Splitmeet post. It’s doing brisk business!
Nasty! ME was just boring on me, fortunately. We bought our lottery ticket too.
Looking forward to my Sephora coupon!
I was feeling daring, so I bought two tickets. Extra lucky!
Thanks for the news about the Sephora coupon. I’m about to run out of Eau des Merveilles, so I’ll wait to replenish until the discount code arrives.
Good to know about the coupon. I think I will fall into the second sale. My daughter has been asking for Milk make up, and I think they are the only ones to carry it.
For me it’s Agar Ebene over Myrrhe Eglantine any time.
lol’d at sour patch kids + root beer :p
I’m off to wash stinky doggie beds at the local laundromat – How is that for glamour!
I am going with Ellie Saab Essence No 1 rose for this fantastic chore.
Looking forward to the swapmeet as I have a US address for this one 🙂
Oh, washing dog beds is so much fun! My girldog has a bed in almost every room. Yes, she is a little spoiled, but so worth it. 🙂
Gres Cabochard after it was mentioned yesterday
Making a coconut curry soup that was mentioned here a while back.
Twins!
We smell good don’t we twin?
We did! Hope you had a lovely day!
This is one of those extremely rare weekend days when I have to go in to work for a bit. There won’t be many people there and it’s file-organizing so ultra casual clothing and prolly no scent until I get home. But when it’s done the file cabinets will be much easier to work with! (Yes, I’m an organization-nerd.) I’m watching the split meet with great interest too, although if I win the lottery I’m going to France and Italy on a ‘fume-buying spree. (Hah!) Anyway, happy weekend, NSTers!
Enjoy making the world a more organized place 🙂
Fighting chaos through organization is strangely satisfying.
I don’t know who I thought I was kidding, saying I’d be commando for the Great File Cabinet Reorg – I wafted Philosykos through the whole extravaganza. 🙂 Am home again now, having a well-deserved libation and about to engage Mr. G in a crossword puzzle-off (we do the same puzzle simultaneously and competitively) – wish me luck!
Who won? 🙂
Wearing Seattle Chocolate. Going to Austin in week. Any suggestions for perfume shopping there?
What fun, I have never been and would love to go. For some reason it does not strike me as a perfumista paradise, but you need to ask Alyssa Harad, she still lives there and she would know!
https://twitter.com/alyssaharad?lang=en
https://alyssaharad.com/
And just came across this by chance this morning:
https://www.facebook.com/RouxSt.James
Wearing a hefty dose of Amouage Journey Woman today. You’d think that it wouldn’t matter quite so much if you spritzed, dabbed or sprayed, but I think it does, in a way that is different than simply “more of the same” or “less of the same.”
Interesting observation….and Journey woman sounds delicious!
I really like Journey. I think I often find the tail end of a perfume’s heart notes are more dense, or complex, with more sprays of perfume…like they are more distinct just before the real dry down. A bit like the flash of light before light fades at sunset.
I’m wearing Carnal Flower today. I haven’t worn it in a while and forgot how beautiful it is. Tonight Fumerie is having a swap night so I have gotten together my unloved bottles. I hope I can get something good!
Good luck!!
You smell fantastic!
What did you get?
Super rainy windy and gross here. Heading into work wearing Narciso edp White Cube. Hoping it’s coziness protects me from the Saturday work crazies.???? have a great weekend everyone!
Get any snow yet?????????
My dd absconded with White Cube when she moved to Texas. But at least I know it will get used up, lol. She hates about 90% of my perfume. So I guess I should be thankful she didn’t “borrow” more.
We had a little wet snow earlier, and now it’s sleeting. Starting tomorrow though, I guess we are having a mostly dry week. I’m already practicing my winter driving????
I came across a cool book yesterday called Make Ink a forager’s guide to ink making. Basically, it’s how to make ink from ingredients you would find in your kitchen or out in your garden and street. I am a fountain pen person but I think these inks would be better for a dip pen as they may be gritty…but a cool christmas present idea for things to do with kids I reckon. I like the foraging aspect.
https://www.npr.org/2018/10/17/656299093/to-make-ink-you-just-need-to-look-down-around-your-feet
Yesterday was warm up on the hill and I spent fifteen minutes just sitting in the grass listening to the skylarks above. I don’t know where they go over winter but in spring they suddenly make themselves heard . And the dawn chorus has been incredible recently, a wall of sound. Wearing Lakeland Flora again. And going to the beach later where we may see some NZ sea lions snoozing on the sand. My garden is full of freesias, lovely.
All of that sounds scenery and time outside so beautiful…
Well, that was incoherent. All that scenery and time outside sounds beautiful….
That sounds incredible. When I was in university I had a job for two summers recording the dawn chorus of flycatchers. Without question, that was my favorite job ever. I love that time of the day and how the world suddenly comes alive.
That IS a cool job. I worked in the school deli (made me a vegetarian for several years!) until I managed to nab a job driving the campus shuttle van, which I loved, but I would definitely have traded a few evening shifts for recording flycatchers!
Sunny and warm, wearing L’Air du Désert Marocain to reorganize the perfume collection.
Hey, welcome back to the Pacific!
Also, I forgot to tell you that I went looking for Hogarth chocolate in town but couldn’t find any in the shops so I looked at their website and they have deals for US/Canada and ship direct from their online shop. I think that might be the most straight forward way for you to get their products ( as I would have to order online, then get it shipped here and then send them to you when you coukd just order from them…if you see what I mean). I don’t eat much chocolate so am no xpert!!
Thanks for the welcome and the chocolate info, much appreciated!
I’m in a solid spritz of PdN Vetyyver. Yum!
Was looking at my completed “Afghan/throw/Lap Rug/ whatever you want to call it” last night and thought, “It’s not bad for a first attempt.” But then decided I could do better and ripped the whole thing apart and started over. ????
Today is my Monday, but the countdown is ON! Hope everyone has a great weekend and sees something irresistible over on the splitmeet page! ✌????
You ripped it all apart?!????
I did! I restarted and it’s already looking better. I must have dropped/added some stitches when I began last time because the edge was a little out of whack.
Hey! Love your new avatar! ❤️ ???? ???? ???? ❤️
Thank you!
Beautiful avatar!
Thanks flopper!
Happy weekend, everyone! It’s been over a week since I’ve been able to even check in here – too busy with work and a nasty sinus infection that rendered me unable to smell anything. (That’s a little bit of a plus when you work in a shelter.) Wearing Cuir Ottoman today, and grateful to be able to smell it.
That’s a wonderful scent! Happy you can smell all that wonderfulness again!
How nice you are feeling better and wearing a favourite scent!
Glad you’re feeling better (despite your loosing your smell shield advantage for work). You smell great!
Glad you were able to smell your perfume, because Cuir Ottoman is beautiful!
Wearing nothing yet as I have a choir concert tonight with a no fragrance rule. I practiced my little heart out for this one – and now I have a cold coming and probably won’t have much of a voice or any sort of range. Bummed! Keeping an eye on the split meet is a fun distraction, though!
Oh no! I’m sorry it will be hard for you to perform. Don’t strain your voice too much.
Aww I’m sorry 🙁 I hope the concert went well despite your concerns.
How did it go? How are you feeling?
Thanks for all the well wishes, I was touched by your concerns! It went well although I had to make up with spirit what I lacked in voice (plus a bit of miming…). Got some feedback that it’s fun watching me because I look very engaged. Another concert this afternoon!
Oh yay, and hope the 2nd concert went as well!
Happy weekend all, and hello after a long absence! Lots of mad life upheaval in the past year and I’ve only been checking in here occasionally. Currently taking it easy with a bad sore throat and a spritz of fall-appropriate Ambre Russe, which I always think of as “ginger biscuit amber.” And keeping an eye on the split meet in case anyone decides to offer up splits of Corsica Furiosa or Vert des Bois (nudge, nudge). Hope you’re all doing well!
I hope you feel better soon!
Good to see you, Isabella! Great amber choice!
I’m much helped by hot water with cayenne pepper (or similar), tumeric, ginger, and honey and perhaps line or lemon juice. The burn of the cayenne seems to de-swell and numb a bit at the same time.
Today my FB Van Cleef&Arpels California Rêverie arrived ???? Been looking at that for ages. Saving it for tomorrow as I’m groggy from a bad night’s sleep.
Enjoy. Looking forward t your impressions….
I adore California Reverie. Enjoy your new scent!
Enjoy CR! It’s absolutely glorious!
SotD = Infusion d’Amande
Woke up thinking of this one. Sprayed, sniffed, then said, “Well, hello, dear friend.” Love it when that happens.
Hope everyone has a
productive/happy/restful/exciting/yourchoice
and fragrant weekend.
I think that is pretty much how I feel about Diptyque Philosykos, even after all these years. I had just been thinking about how I might not replace my bottle when it’s gone because I will be so bummed if I go get a new one and it smells different.
You know, I waited to buy a bottle of original Infusion d’Iris edp and have long regretted it. Something in the base changed, I can’t wear the newer one. Oh well. If a bottle of the Amande ever shows up for under a hundred bucks, I’ll be tempted. For now I’ll take my time using up an 8 ml mini. I don’t need any more FBs!
Oh no! Well, I have the regular and the Absolue so am not likely to run out, but if I do I’ll find a new iris then.
Annette Neuffer is a German jazz musician who also composes natural perfumes. I learned about her line from the 2018 Perfumes Guide, but I see there were also earlier reviews on various blogs. I’ve been testing two samples that I ordered from her website: Avicenna Myrrha Mystica and Per Fumum: a Sanctified Rose.
AMM reminds me of one or two of the April Aromatics, such as Calling All Angels, but less dense and long-lasting. PMSR also reminds me of AA and also Andy Tauer LdDM, but without all that patchouli. I will probably try more of this line as I really enjoy her compositions and the beautiful natural ingredients.
One thing I read in one of her interviews is that she cuts back on performances around the holidays in order to fulfill gift orders, which seems like a serious trade-off.
Has anyone else tried this line?
Had not even heard of it, but those sound great!
I’m wearing Eau des Merveilles for a drizzly, mellow Saturday. I have all the things to do, but gave myself permission to just take a day off because I really needed it. The most active thing I did today was yoga. I’m currently sitting on the couch, drinking Belgian beer and doing my annual October reading of Ray Bradbury’s “Something Wicked This Way Comes”.
Have a wonderful weekend. Please make sure to do something nice for yourself.
I am also reading while the little ones nap and sipping some Tulsi Rose tea..October and fall weather are for reading 😉 And you smell fab!
Oh, I love Tulsi teas, but never tried a rose one before. I’ll need to finish one box or another before I buy more. Wait, this pledge sounds familiar……????
I don’t think I’ve ever had rose tea. Obviously that needs to be fixed immediately!
This site is not helping my burgeoning tea obsession! ????
I loved Something Wicked! Can’t imagine reading it every year, though – it kind of gave me nightmares. Gorgeous, compelling writing.
You’re winning at #weekendgoals
And you smell divine!
Still enjoying my spritz of Kismet from earlier today. The sillage and longevity are impressive! Similar to Shalimar but smoother/slightly sweeter. This one is already true love. ????
Nice!
I wish they would do a collector bottle of Kismet that had the box design (the elephant on blue) on an opaque bottle.
A few disappointments today. It’s a nice warm sunny day so we walked up to our neighborhood pub hoping to have lunch outside. Waited for about 5 minutes before a waitress came outside to say they aren’t serving on the patio. But it’s a beautiful sunny day out and they even had the music playing. We could have gone inside but that kinda defeats the purpose. We moved on and went to the neighborhood pharmacy to pick up a couple things, all sold out! In the end we walked home in the sunshine at least.
A disappointing fragrance was a sample of ELDO Putain de Palaces. The notes had promise but I think I was expecting more almond and less ‘spicy hot mess’ on me. Oh well, money saved again, right? Apologies to any fans out there!
Today I went with some Le Labo Iris 39 oil, and that doesn’t seem to disappoint.
Sorry about the pub – that does seem ridiculous. Iris 39 is always a great choice. You smell great. Have you had a chance to compare the oil to the perfume? I only have the spray samples, but am very curious about the oil.
I have the liquid balm rollerball, not the perfume oil, but it’s as potent as the edp and doesn’t expire when it says it does. They say 1 year from opening, but I’m going on 2 years and it still smells great. I didn’t get the oil because when I was sniffing them, a few smelled a little rancid to me.
I also found Putain des Palaces disappointing.
I have had samples of the perfume and love it. The oil is a bit deeper smelling and quite long lasting, on me anyways; it stays closer to the skin but creates a wonderful aura. You can mix the oil with some unscented lotion and it is also nice in your hairline I’ve discovered. The perfume is definitely on my list!
One reason I got the oil is because I had just purchased the Frederic Malle Iris hand lotion as well. I was on holiday and couldn’t justify the additional cost of the perfume at the time.
Oops, this was supposed to be a reply to sistine.
It’s fall here in Tennessee. After living all of my life in Florida, the fall chill is shocking and thrilling. I wake up and ask Alexa about the weather and listen with real zeal, with the type of anticipation that I used to feel when watching a suspenseful movie.
Since I working from home a couple of weeks per month now, I often don’t have to be polite with my perfume choices. In the cool weather and privacy, I am loving Amouage Beloved. I wore it every day this week and it lingers on my pullover and sheet and is breathtaking. This will likely end up being my Xmas wishlist item.
Candle sniffing — work has been intense. Very intense. Needing some fun but having no energy, I went candle sniffing and found the new Thymes Forest series. The Birch candle is truly lovely and worth seeking out by perfume lovers. Cedar was very nice too!
Just looked at those candles- gorgeous! Working from home is a beautiful thing, enjoy!
Sometimes I love it, but even that is not saving me from my very real addiction to work. I have a serious problem and just cannot seem to keep proper boundaries with my career.
But at least I can wear copious amounts of strong perfume!
Mmmmm, Beloved — so easy to wear!
You smelled great!
I’m not sure I’d like to work from home more than a day or two in a row: I want people around even if it means noise and distractions. But being able to wear perfumes loud and proud is definitely nice 🙂
Very good to know about the candles, which I was curious about — thanks!
Even though I’ve been sick for almost a week (and still am) today was a great day! I was running a rummage sale at my kid’s school and we made $400! Just on the rummage part, not even counting the carnival/raffle/food parts!
And in the middle of it all, one of the other PTA parents told me how wonderful I smelled. I promised to send her the details. It was Vanille Insensee, not one I normally wear.
Urgh, hope you can shake that cold loose soon. Sometimes Vanille Insensee is just so right; that PTA parent told the truth!
Good for you, that’s a decent take!
SOTD–many spritzes of Chergui, and I am still smelly many hours later. Busy weekend and then off to a Gala Fundraiser on Monday night which will honor a long time friend. What to wear, but more important, what to spritz!!
Smelly, maybe — but smelly-wonderful in Chergui! The gala for your friend sounds glam; let us know which fume you choose…
🙂 I’d stick with Chergui. It’s rich, sexy and for me, it’s my fancy dinner perfume. Close seconds : Ambre Narguile and Carnal Flower.
A beautiful fall day, it made it so pleasant to run errands, I picked Prada l’Eau Ambree. I meant to post Friday but think I forgot, I enjoyed the comments so much. Like many mothers, mine used to wear No 5, I recall vividly the small square bottle of extrait she had, so that’s what I was wearing in her memory.
So many of us associate our moms with No. 5; what a great choice for the CP last Friday. Love L’Eau Ambree, too!
Yes, so many of us do, so I always feel a little strange wearing No 5, but in a very nice way, it brings back memories. I hadn’t worn l’Eau Ambree in a while, I was struck by how good it is, so glad we share a love for it.
Helloooo from Sweden, friends! We got to Stockholm on Friday and drove to the middle of nowhere for my friend’s wedding, which was yesterday, and which was wonderful and beautiful and sweet. I wore Camel, which was just as spectacular the second time around as it was the first.
For those of you wondering how Project: Jet Lag worked out, we didn’t sleep at ALL on the plan from California to Iceland. We then passed out for an hour on the short flight from Iceland to Stockholm. During the five-hour drive from Stockholm to the wedding location, I occasionally drifted out of consciousness. My poor boyfriend (who had to drive us) needed to pull over at one point to take a 10-minute nap. We went to bed around 12:30am, slept eight hours, and made it through the wedding festivities until 2am like champs. So…maybe the fast broken in the new time zone worked? But the progressively early wake-up times probably just made us even sleepier. Oh well.
Wearing Mikmoi Amari today. It’s a hair perfume, but I’m a renegade and am wearing it on skin. It’s the last day of the wedding, and we’ll head back to Stockholm for a few days after 🙂 Hope you’re all well!
Hi, there! Happy your trip is going well, and you and the bf are indeed champs. Thanks for keeping us updated. 🙂
Thanks, FearsMice 🙂 we try! I’m lucky that he’s willing to do all the driving, given my aversion to the task and my inability to drive stick!
Enjoy your trip Koyel, and kudos for having tried a new way of beating jet lag, it had the merit of being interesting. Hope you will bring back scented souvenirs, and many wonderful memories.
Wow, project jet lag sounded crazy, but I guess it worked! I hope you are both refreshed and having a great time.
Enjoy your trip, jet lag or not!
For me missing with sleep patterns never works. The worst I can do is not to get enough sleep before the flight: since I’m not flying business class, I end up being uncomfortable and not sleeping because my body wants a bed (or at least a horizontal placement) and refuses to tolerate the seat instead.
Sounds like a great trip so far. And the tiredness sounds absolutely reasonable considering the amount of travel. Hope the rest is great!
It was worth a try, and so glad the wedding was great anyway!
Today I’ve tried two 2018 perfume releases: Parfums de Nicolaï Cap Neroli and Lancome Iris Dragées.
Cap Neroli is a lovely neroli cologne-like fragrance. It reminded me of 4711 Original Eau de Cologne, TF Neroli Portofino and Guerlain Eau de Cologne Impériale. I do not feel I need this perfume, but if you are looking for a new fresh neroli scent, it’s a pretty one.
Lancome Iris Dragées starts with sugary iris, sheer and delicate, but then almond appears, and after that all I can smell is that bitter-sweet almond. I like this note in Hypnotic Poison, but here it puts me off. Too sweet, too sharp…
Thanks for the mini review. I sometimes think bloggers are careful to only review what they like. Or to at least try to not sound critical or negative. There is such a lot to try, it helps if someone with taste overlapping yours gives a definite opinion, albeit subjective as always.
Ooh, a PSA (sorry if someone else has already mentioned this): do you remember that great Bonne Maman advent calendar Robin posted last week from Simply Gourmand? If you’re not ready to buy $75 worth of stuff from that site and are also not interested in paying the $20 delivery fee, they have the same calendar on Amazon for the same price. Free shipping if you have Amazon Prime 🙂
Aww thanks for the tip, but it looks like people have already bought it up. The cheapest option on Amazon right now is $79. ????
Oh noooo, sorry 🙁 phew I’m glad we snagged one before that happened!!
An article explaining the scent of fall, from the Washington Post’s Capital Weather Gang blog:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/weather/2018/10/19/scent-season-explaining-aromas-fall/?utm_term=.a49f5f070756
Very interesting and unexpectedly specific explanation — thanks!
I have a partial bottle (~20 ml) of Providence Perfume Company’s Tabac Citron to give to a regular NSTer (someone I recognize as a commenter) in CONUS. The bottle is fresh; I received it from PPC in September.
If two people are interested, then I will split it into 2 ~10 ml decants.
Please email me: my avatar at the geeee may-elle.
FearsMice, I will email you! I love PPC, and this is one of the few scents of theirs I haven’t tried. I’d be so happy with 10ml if someone else is interested too. Thank you for your generosity!
If therabbitsflower doesn’t mind, I’d love the remaining 10 ml! Emailing now.
Yay — the Tabac Citron has found new homes!
Shopping PSA: Neiman Marcus is currently having a 20% off beauty sale. The only exceptions I could find were Chanel and Hermes. So if you want discounted Frederic Malle, Tom Ford, Byredo, etc… they’re available at Neiman Marcus.
I am a wee bit grumpy though, because they don’t carry the full Feederic Malle line so I couldn’t get Dries van Noten. Oh well!
Not sure if to thank you or curse you 🙂 Thanks 🙂
Boy, if Dries Van Noten came in those fancy new bottles, I’d just die.
Thanks Sistine! I finally caved and bought a travel size of Eau de Magnolia.
SITD = SL Bapteme du Feu
Need to spray more as it was initially citrus powdery and now I’m getting nothing.
Cold day here and I am loving it!
I got my fake blood drippy necklace and red gift wrap tissue to make fake blood splatters, candy for my goodie bags, stickers to make them look Halloweeny. I need to “practice” wearing the outfit as I will be at Sniffapalooza into the very late afternoon and will need to put on the crime scene “costume” at the party.
Commuting Woes No. 605 or how I managed to spend $740 for a $74 problem
I may have mentioned that I heard a disturbing rattling coming from my car and got an appointment at the dealership yesterday. The rattling turned out to be an exhaust pipe clamp that was loose and the fix was a replacement clamp, some type of bolt and the technician’s fee. While looking at the car, the technician noticed that the passenger side wheels were quite worn and wearing way more than the driver’s side. So, with 2 replacement tires , rebalancing and an oil change (since I was already there), the total including the cost for fixing the rattling noise came out to $740. Ouch! ????????????
Yikes! This happens to us when I send my husband to the vet with the dog….
LOL. I’m glad it was pointed out to me though because I would never think to check (I don’t even think I know how to open the hood of the car…this is why I have AAA premium membership, so worth it and had already paid for itself over the years for one thing or another).
That stinks! But now your car is good to go for winter.
Absolutely true as far as the tires are concerned. I used “winterize” when I was speaking with the service manager and he said there really isn’t any such thing anymore, at least as far as he is concerned given newer car parts and fluids that won’t freeze.
Oh, I have to take the van in next week and I’m a wee bit concerned about the way the tranny sounds when shifting…
Sniffapalooza in constume?! Sounds like a blast! Have fun✌????
Actually, I won’t be in costume for Sniffapalooza, but because I will be going directly to the party after Sniffa, I need to make sure I have my costume accoutrements ready.
Ah, got ya!
I hope your car appreciates the good care you are taking of it 🙂 I keep telling mine that either it behaves or I’m getting a new one: so far it listens.
Hey, I had a fun perfume day yesterday. A four hour workshop with Bruno Fazzolari and six other “students.” We mostly covered Fazzolari’s personal creative trajectory and then walked through the steps of creating a cologne, which we then each built ourselves. I would definitely take another similar workshop again, but as for creating my own perfumes—I am now more convinced than ever that it is not my cup of tea. Working with Indolene and Petitgrain Bigarade to temper and zest up… super interesting . . . for an afternoon. The final product? Well. Hm. It is a cologne but at this moment it is too clove heavy for me and rough—sort of headache inducing. Fazzolari said it will need a week or two settle, so I’ll revisit it again later. For now, pass me the Hermes!
That sounds like a lot a fun! I took a few classes with a woman here using naturals only and my finished product was very patchouli heavy. Not what I intended- it was supposed to be rose heavy. It’s not terrible though.
Our group was five men and two women, and no one was going near patchouli (I would have!).
Ha! I can see why. It tends to take over (as do cloves, which happened in the oriental I made).
That sounds like such a good experience. When you made your cologne did you start with base notes and then work up …how did you arrange and structure the notes? How many notes did you use? I am too slapdash for making perfumes, I just kept adding more and it lost any sense of clarity.
I am so glad you asked! Okay. So we started with the top notes, an accord of bergamot (35 drops), lemon (15 drops), and sweet orange (18 drops).
Then middle notes of lavender (3 drops), rosemary (1 drop) and clove bud (2 drops). Those were then tempered with neroli (2 drops) and geranium (1), and final structure added with an amber accord (3 drops) and indolene (5 drops) with 13 remaining drops of diluent.
My final version decreased the bergamot to 34 drops and upped the lavender to 4 drops and upped the indolene to 6 drops. If I had to do it again, I would have added 2-3 more drops of lavender and halved the clove to 1 drop.
The version I have, as it smells now, definitely has clove in the top notes. I am not loving that. Not positive that my final changes would have made the cologne rock my boat–but they might have!
That is fascinating. I always thought that perfumers began with the base notes because otherwise the top notes evaporate or alter before the perfume as a whole is created….so it’s easier to get a concept of the whole perfume if you work from the ottom up. Interesting about the difference in quantities too, creating weight and balance. Clove bud must be very grunty. Thanks!
What fun Oakland Fresca! Do report back if it improves as it ages a bit.
Oh, I love Lampblack and appreciate his other fragrances. It must have been so cool to meet him!
I agree, I have no interest to make my own, but I’d love to take a course just to learn about more about the notes and the process in order to deepen my perfume appreciation.
Busy day yesterday so sm just getting around to posting and comment catch up. I wore BF Lampblack yesterday and enjoyed it thoroughly!
Today is much cooler and windy so put on a dab of BF Fontevraud to stay with my BF theme.
Darned cold here tonight and might do a drop of Lampblack myself.
SOTD, I just got back from Italy and Sicily this past Tuesday night and I am wearing one of the two perfumes I bought there. L’oblio by meo fusciuni which I bought in Taormina, Sicily. The other perfume I bought was in Capri…Carthusia Fiori di Capri (which I’ve been wearing since I returned).
Oh how fun! I’d love to hear more about your trip!
Ditto! And the food, tell us about the food!
Me too! And tell us about the perfume shopping!
I’m in the last dying whisps of SB Incensed, which I wore to work last night and acted similar to holy water! Why, you ask? ????
Because last night was the 10th annual Zombie Crawl here in Sketch City, that’s why. A frightening thought indeed. I got floated to ICU and thought, “Here we go!” but amazingly, I remained unscathed! A lot of zombie action all around me, and a lot of zombie fall out, but I swanned through it all like Mother Superior, untroubled and smooth browed, clasping my rosary confidently.
Really, it was just another night in Reno…which is full of zombies 24/7.
Sail into Monday with eyes to the sky, fragrant people!
Hey, I heard “going to California” today, and thought of you. Hang in there!
Aww, thanks! It’s not so bad now that I have adjusted my attitude a bit. More amusing than anything else. Although, everything here seems to be colored by desperation, which is sad.
I’m not fan of California (ducking!), but the money is good and it gets me closer to being able to take the entire summer off to explore Alaska. That’s the plan Stan! I’m hoping to go all the way to the Beaufort Sea ☃️
Ooh, I like your plan!
Good, hope you make tons of cash and get to do what you want all summer!
It’s probably too late to post. SOTD was Vanille 44. It turned a little hamster cage on me. Has anyone else had this happen? I think that I prefer Sideris for my incense vanilla fix.
Never a hamster cage…I end up wearing Vanille 44 when it is a little damp out and I also tend to wear it to temper something strong (like Puredistance M)
LOVE M… Yum! It does have that weird cistus note. I have a teeny decant but I’m not sure if I can get away with it at work and the hubs doesn’t like it. I would love to smell it on someone else.
I’m not equipped to comment on either perfume, but thought I’d say hello ????
Hey lillyjo! ???? I only have decants of a few Le Labo scents. I hope work wasn’t too taxing this weekend and people behaved themselves.
I have a decant of Opardu with a few mls left in it. Are you interested in testing it for science? If so, please email me at llombardi underscore symbol 42 at the hawt male.
This comment made me laugh! I also am not equipped to comment on there perfumes, and indeed, much of life. ????
???? Rock on Deva!
Nope, not my experience (and I just wore it yesterday and almost finished my decant ????).
Hmmm.. I must have a wonky nose today. I used to love it.
Much colder here today. I was rolling my eyes at people on the subway in the am, wearing their down jackets and hats. Then I came out uptown, and the wind and temperature made me realize they were the smart ones. But I have to say walking through Central Park in the late afternoon was lovely….it was relatively quiet and beautiful. 4 miles later, we were home again.
I had thought Angel Muse would keep me warm… it helped but not quite enough.
It sure was a beautiful day! I was overdressed yesterday with a quilted coat, but today, it felt just right.
Almost twins. I wore Angel today.
It was pretty cold outside today. We were doing errands and I just wore a fleece jacket. It was fine in the car but the wind cut right through it.
A long, drifty day… wearing Ylang 49 and trying to keep the puppy distracted from eating the furniture.
As Astro would say, Rut-row George. I need to take out my little decant of Ylang 49. The weather as been perfect for it.
I’m envisioning that little bitty puppy taking on a huge couch ????
Go puppy!!! (Not that I want your furniture eaten, but that sounds so cute)
