The daily lemming

Posted by Robin on 28 September 2018 7 Comments

From Klorane, cream soaps with organic cupuaçu butter ("clinically proven to be 1.5 times more nourishing than shea butter"), in Fig Leaf (with white tea and freesia) and Yuzu Infusion (with neroli and aquatic moss). $8 each for 100g at Dermstore.

What does it mean to be 1.5x as nourishing? Do they count, like, % oil on the skin of your hand after use or something?

      From the study they cite:

“Cupuacu’s ability to penetrate the skin quickly (transdermal penetration), and then retain moisture, is unparalleled and far superior to shea butter or lanolin4 (see Fig. 2). A simple water absorption study was performed in the lab. Water was added to each of the following: cupuacu, shea butter and lanolin, with stirring, until separation was observed. Cupuacu could support 440% of its weight in water, which means that 1 kg of cupuacu butter could absorb 4.4 kg of water under stirring before any division of phases was noted.4 Cupuacu butter offers the capacity to attract 440% more water allowing it to function much more effectively as a skin hydrator and plumper.3,5”

Ah! Thanks. That’s some super suspect science to extrapolate to skin, but I can see why they can make that claim 🙂

Most science used to back up skin care ingredients is probably super suspect, that’s for sure!

Haha, yep 🙂 I went to a chemistry conference/workshop in Germany while I was an undergrad, and one of the places we visited was a cosmetics company (L’Oreal, I think? It was one of those big names; whoever has an R&D facility in Hamburg). The idea was to inspire us budding chemists to want to go into cosmetics chemistry after finishing our PhDs, but all it taught me was not to put too much stock in their ads and their data, and that I probably did not ever want to work in cosmetics chemistry.

Thank you for that, I like and trust the Klorane French drugstore brand which has been in business for a long time and will ask my brother to bring me these soaps from Paris next time he comes, Fig Leaf sounds very appealing to me.

I think there are a couple more in this “cream soap” collection — hibiscus and I forget the other. Might as well get him to bring you all the soaps 😉
