I know advertising is selling a lifestyle, rather than specifics of What Stuff Smells Like, but even so, this video feels remarkably uninformative.
Wasn’t the original marketed in a very counter-trend, non-aspirational way? Even the name was pared down to the essential. That’s so 2001, I guess.
Yeah. In 2001 there were about 400 new fragrances a year…you didn’t have to be quite so frantic about getting consumers to pay attention, I guess.
Also true, I think, that young people are mostly interested in smelling clean. So could be that talking less about the smell, and more about other things, works better?
I definitely agree that talking about other things than smell seems to be working better, especially with the current trend favouring clean, mostly linear, non-threatening fragrances. (But perhaps “non-threatening” is ungenerous of me.) The video itself is young people having fun in the sun wearing (or being) bright colours, so …
