I once went to the doctor with a mysterious rash. It was bumpy and itchy like poison ivy and had started on my lips but then spread to the backs of my knees and my hands. I had no idea what it could be.
The doctor took one look at me and said, “have you been eating mangoes?” Reader, I had – in fact I had been scraping the flesh out of the skin with my teeth. And that is how I learned that mango skin contains urushiol, the same substance that makes poison ivy bad to touch. It’s not in the flesh, just the skin, and if you are very allergic to poison ivy it can give you a rash that spreads as other parts of your body freak out in sympathy.
Thank you for coming to my TED talk on why this perfume should have a different name.
Ouch!
I must not have that allergy because I eat mango that way all the time. And I know some people even eat the skin, but I never have.
I also eat mangos like you Robin and I am grateful I do not have allergies to them.
I eat the green (unripe) mangos with salt with the skin. So good!
So now you salt the mango, and eat it skin and all?
Yes, but I only eat the skin of the unripe mango, not the skin of the ripe one, because it is harder to chew it and I do not like the texture and flavor. I slice the “green” mango and add some salt to it. It sounds crazy, but that is the way my family has always eaten them. ????
Thank you, very interesting!
WOW! Good to learn something new today!
Heh, I, too, am allergic and yes, the fresh ones on account of the skin are at issue. I have no issues eating the preserved ones or ones that have been cooked through. I tend to avoid fresh mango salsa.
I would like some “sun, joy, flirting, love, and happiness.” Despite the potentially itchy side effect, it does sound fun.
LOL — yes, it really does even if it causes a rash.
