Today, our eighth annual Haiku Challenge (if you like, you can check out past years for inspiration). As we have done for the past couple years, we're also happy to include other forms of poetry if haiku don't inspire you. Have a perfume-related limerick or a sonnet you'd like to share? Please do.
If you're writing a haiku, pick a perfume or a perfume house (or really, anything related to perfume), and write a haiku about it. Use the simplified English form — your haiku should have three lines, the first line with five syllables, the second line with seven syllables and the third line with five syllables. You can put the perfume name in the title if that makes it easier, and at any rate, don’t stress over the rules of traditional haiku — this is just for fun.
Note: image is detail from Half Moon Bridge by Toshi Yoshida, 1941. (And it's a repeat from our first Haiku poll because it's one of my favorites.)

Contra Bombardie 32
Voixe Humane 8
that would be “camaraderie” which might throw it off by a syllable…..ah well 🙂
AND that would be “Contra Bombarde 32″….yikes! I need another cup of tea pronto!
Contre bombarde 32 is lovely, a sweet flavoured incense 🙂
I love it…. as well as Voix Humane 8…which is also sweet and incensey to my nose…they are both fragrances I probably never would have tried but I am so glad that I did.
The rule is: There are no rules.
LOL!!!
Peace love and light to you on this beautiful Saturday!

Enjoy the day, madtowngirl!!!

Simply lovely!
perfect and what a lovely memory
Beautiful!
That’s beautiful. Thanks for this.
Lovely memories are always tear appropriate!
I love a good scent memory…
Oooooh. You caught that feeling so beautifully.
Very sweet. Scent memories are powerful!
Oh wow, beautiful!
No need to be embarrassed by that scent memory. I have had something similar happen. It’s a gift.
Yet another gloomy day here…

I’m doing my own bergamot challenge today. I fell in love with the Le Labo when I tried it a couple of months ago and wanted to make sure there wasn’t a more “affordable” option out there I would love just as much so I’m comparing it to Commodity, Atelier and The Different Company. Here’s what came to mind…
Bergamot, bergamot, bright and green
Le Labo’s the winner
With the craziest prices
I’ve ever seen
Happy Saturday everyone!
Le Labo Bergamot used to be about all I wore. Nothing touches it for me either!
LOL!! I love that scent too, always makes me happy when other people mention it. Seriously doubt it’s a LL best seller, right?
Technically I cheated because that’s not a haiku, but it was the first thing that popped into my mind this morning.
I love this one too! I’ve resisted a full bottle but I think I’m close to caving.
I would guess Santal 33 is their best seller. It is well done, but one of those that was “too much” on my skin. I enjoyed it the next morning when just the far drydown remained.
Or Ylang 49?
Hey madtowngirl, you can have my Saks coupon code for $50 off $250. Click on my name to get my email address.
Oh, thank you for this kind and generous offer…I’m planning on ordering from Luckyscent though because they have the 50 ml bottle available, plus I can get a free gift with purchase.????
Super! It irks me that you’re limited to one coupon code per order.

Lovely haiku, lovely scents.
SipOTD: Homemade rose hip tea. Recipe follows (in Haiku form):
Two cups of rose hips
One-half cup dried hibiscus
Two tablespoons mint
Mix well. This makes a bunch. Everyone I’ve served or gifted this to has loved it (if I do say so myself). 🙂
Thanks for the Haiku recipe. Looks delightful.
great recipe
Sounds delish, and very clever rendering it in haiku form.
I should make that! I had a rose hips & hibiscus tea, and it would have been much nicer with mint.
Pretty sure there should be double bonus points for embedding recipes in haiku form 🙂
Maybe I should try putting a bit of mint in the hibiscus infusion I have? Thanks for the suggestion!

Whooops! Sleepy Saturday.
It’s lovely both ways. I really need to stop being distracted by new things and buy a bottle of LHB.
If I were in charge (ha!) I would declare that L’Heure Bleue is required sniffing for everyone who cares about scent. I wish I had smelled it a few years ago, at the very beginning of my perfumed adventures. Things would have made more sense to my nose.
LHB is so lovely my heart wobbles a bit every single time I wear it. I love the EdP and bought the EdT unsniffed. Subtly different but both are beautiful. And they can be bought so inexpensively, practically perfumath free, lol, although the extrait makes my eyes pop at 30 ml for $350.
I adore Kevin’s review of LHB here on NST, also the Black Narcissus has some fascinating things to say about it on his blog.
Oh, thank Toshi Yoshida! And he’s from a family of artists, I love his father’s work too.
Rainy here too, a good day to snuggle with puppies and bake cookies. Wearing JM Orris & Sandalwood.
I really want a bottle of this????????
That’s almost a natural haiku Cazaubon:

Wartime photos hold her gaze

This is Voyage by Hiram Green. It’s one of three perfumes that transport me way back back to my Nana’s (grandmother’s) bedroom. We lived with my grandparents. Nana had the most magical thing, a train case in ivory leather with her initials on the clasp. The family had clubbed together and bought it for her in the 1950s for her first plane journey. She kept it under the bed with her most precious photos inside, in an army kitbag that had belonged to one of her sons. On rainy days and sick days, out came the train case. I never saw all of the photos at once, and I never dreamed of sneaking a look when she wasn’t there.
(The other two are Yardleys Lavender and Phul-Nana cachous, which she sucked to freshen her breath. I had no idea it was also/originally a perfume until a year or two ago. It smells exactly as I remember the cachous.)
Not familiar with Voyage, but lovely haiku.
What a wonderful memory!
I recently found some great pictures of when my grandmother taught me how to use a party horn (one of the roll-out ones) when I was about 2 years old. Its hilarious.
I can just see it 😀
Such a poignant story – it takes me back to my own “Nanny”. Thanks for sharing, and I love your haiku.
What a lovely story and memory!
Lovely memory and story! Thank you for sharing.
wonderful story and haiku
Lovely
Wow, heartwarming!
Magical, priceless memory.
Thank you!
Oops, that was supposed to come under all the replies:)
Precious memory and beautiful haiku! Thanks for sharing.
Well, I dont remotely resemble any kind of poet, but since I’m grooving on nature today, I leave Garard Manley Hopkins to wax poetic in my stead.
God’s Grandeur
The world is charged with the grandeur of God.
It will flame out, like shining from shook foil;
It gathers to a greatness, like the ooze of oil
Crushed. Why do men then now not reck his rod?
Generations have trod, have trod, have trod;
And all is seared with trade; Bleared, smeared with toil;
And wears man’s smudge and shares man’s smell: the soil
Is bare now, nor can foot feel, being shod.
And for all this, nature is never spent;
There lives the dearest freshness deep down things;
And though the last lights off the black West went
Oh, morning, at the brown brink eastward, springs —
Because the Holy Ghost over the bent
World broods with warm breast and with ah! bright wings.
Three cheers for sprung rhythm!!
SOTD is Box of Eels EDP.
This is the new EDP? How does it compare to the EDT?
Yes. Deeper. Rounder. Richer.
Deva- san
Next week is my birthday and I was planning on a new purchase of box of eels. My bottle has dipped below the half way mark really quickly.
I have the EDT and the EDP in my basket, not sure which to delete.
Say more please about deeper, rounder, richer?
Oh, I’m not sure I’m the one to ask. I am no “nose” and really have difficulty picking apart fragrances. I tend to pick perfumes that move me on emotional level, and while I greatly admire and wish I was more of the “intellectual” type perfumista, I am not. That’s my disclaimer????
So. I’ve had 3 decants of the edt and loved it right off the bat. I didn’t have any problems with longevity as some seem to. The edt seems to me to be “airier” and lighter, a bit transparent and diaphanous. Like a piece of pretty lacy lingerie.
The edp to me seems more substantial, heavier. If it were a piece of lingerie, it would be a boned corset that meant business.
Hope that helps.
And may I be the one to wish you an early Happy Birthday✌????
Boned corset, I love it.
I just came from the gym and have to get out of this sports bra!
I have between now and Tuesday to make my birthday choice.
1. Box of eels edp or edp
2. Or new Aedes in red bottle ( I too pick fragrances on an emotional level)
3. Back up bottle of original Aedes in L’artisan bottle @ 185 before it’s only available in new bottle for 245 clams.
4. Satori
One birthday – one bottle
What to do.
I always remember the Hopkins line….”nothing gold can stay”
I’m getting ready for the Disco Dance Party at the Library of Congress; got my outfit picked, but took some time to pick a perfume, so here it is:
Gorgeous Au Dela
by Bruno Fazzolari
Disco ball perfume
this perfume is just strikingly beautiful, with a particular chypre clarity that I have not smelled in many modern perfumes. Very tenacious, too, so I was going to apply it lightly but then – nobody applied lightly in the 70s, right?
You smell great!
Perfect, and hope it is a perfect evening!
please report back….I remember disco from the first time around!!
It was a great event – to hear Gloria Gaynor sing I Will Survive is really something else. I posted a lot of pics and videos and so did other people – check out hashtag #LCDisco on Twitter & Instagram. Methinks I did smell really great throughout the whole night – I kept catching trails of my perfume and it was still stunning beautiful. Thanks to Bruno Fazzolari for making this gem!

Neroli Outrenoir today. Portrait of a Lady this evening.
🙂
That one really spoke to me.
Tangent sort of related to fragrance— We received our annual invitation to a gala to raise money for a local refuge for battered women. The them is “An Evening of Empowerment, Hero Edition,” and it is about celebrating heroes…. the survivors of abuse and other heroes. The there are small pictures of Malala Yousafzai, Ruth Bader Ginsberg, Frieda Kahlo… and other important women, and inexplicably Yo Yo Ma and Neil Degrasse Tyson. On the front of the card is a photo of Coco Chanel and her quote, “A girl should be two things: Who and what she wants.” This quote from this person in this context seems really weird to me.
Born in poverty
Self made fortune and perfume
Disregard the rest
*thumbs up*
Yup…… Yup.
exactly
That is a truly weird invite, OF, I must agree. As for Coco Chanel Kanuka has it just right!
Inspired by my new OJ Discovery Set which arrived today lol:

In love with Woman
Y’all, how have I not smelled this? I have OJ Woman on one arm and Isfarkand on the other. I will probably have to pass the Isfarkand to my guy, he’s drooling over it (though I love it too) and he is in Ormonde Man. I definitely see some full bottle OJ purchases in our future haha. So we are 3/3 for the day. 😉
OJ Woman is great; happy you’ve found some new loves!

Oh darn, this is fun, but not that easy.
English is not my native language, but to make this work you have to ‘think’/be creative in the language you want to write it in. I cannot just write it in Dutch and then translate it.
I love these creative community ‘projects’. 🙂

Both of yours are really great!
Very nice, no need to be self-conscious about your English.
I would never really guess English wasn’t your native language. Love your Sarrasins haiku-perfect!
Thank you guys, for the sweet comments! 🙂
I had a very busy weekend, i am trying to catch up right now with all the new posts/haikus. I really enjoy all the creativity.
I really enjoyed the haiku you had for Arso. Very vivid imagery.
Such a beautiful image for the post, Robin! To see wisteria bloom in Japan is one of my dreams.
We’re having a really, really weird spring this year, so my “spring” perfumes are not getting a lot of wear. Hence, the haiku:
A few precious days
To wear Apres l’Ondee
Spring is almost gone
I was in Japan almost a year ago. I was not really aware of the whole phenomenon (so I missed the parks that hosted the wisteria festivals), but I bumped into a bunch of very large wisterias in the ‘wild’ when I was hiking.
So beautiful. Also very impressive to me were all the Iris everywhere. Purple, blue, white, pink, yellow, red…
And you made a lovely haiku!
I would be content with a bower of wisteria over my own front door 🙂
It was in my backyard growing up and this is just now reminding me of how much I loved it. I haven’t thought of it in years and years. Right next to a honeysuckle.

Amber, vanilla

What? No tobacco?
These are the notes for SOTD Rania J. Ambre Loup. It’s a perfume that smells primarily of tobacco but tobacco is not listed in Fragrantica.
I went into the office today and purged files. I accomplished wbat I set out to do so I am a happy camper. I think I will reward myself :-). Apparently, I have another coupon code for the SFA $50 off $250 or $100 off $500.
Uh oh ????
I’ve been checking out LuckyScent, too, just sayin’…
Please sniff Mugler Alien Musc Mysterieux and report back, I am dying to know. 🙂 I hear it is exclusive to SFA.
Oui. I’ll need to stop by!
Hajusuuri- I threw out my Saks mailer the other day. Duh.
Do you know any sites I can get a code?
apsara! I got a mailer and an email. It is not a generic code. Please email me and I would be happy to pass it along. There may be some exclusions but I know for sure no exclusions on Prada, Le Labo or Jo Malone.
Eeeek, I looked through my emails again and now couldn’t find! Could I have dreamt it?
Sister! There’s a “notes” function on parfumo.de for writing your own private comments on perfumes… half of my notes read “Wot? No xxx?”

Such delicate green.
(Apologies if I have ripped off someone else’s haiku from a previous year. It came easily enough to worry me.) I just ordered a bottle of the edt, and there went all my birthday money. Ha! So true! I actually google the pronunciations so I don’t sound like a complete dolt.
I was talking to a fellow perfumista who speaks fluent French and she mentioned something about Parfum Dom Pierre. I told her I never heard of that brand and then in a delayed reaction I blurted out “Ohhh! You mean Parfum de Empire!” in my best American ????
Oh, that is me x 100!
So cute! High five to you for figuring it out. I’d probably still be scratching my head.

Reeking havoc is genius!
Who’s Holly?
She is an NSTer who coined the phrase when she began wearing copious amounts of samples in one day…..and she is still at it!
I am following her lead today…after Chamade was Oud Delice, Cologne du Magreb, Mosaic, Wilde, Britt Rhythm, L’Eau de Chloe and E&J Black….there are my eight 🙂
Way to go!
These are really sweet. Personalised gifts really.

I’m enjoying catching up on all the haikus. Such talent here! Off to celebrate Mother’s Day at my MIL’s a week early since we can’t make it next week.

That’s perfect.
Thanks! When I’m making coffee in the morning and wearing perfume, the coffee aroma really enhances whatever I’m wearing. I wish they could capture that smell in perfume.
Enjoy your day!
Thanks! I enjoy my mother-in-law so it’s always nice to go out there.
I love the smell of coffee!
The best moment to smell it is in the morning amd I am still lying in bed, trying to wake up ;). And my husband is downstairs making coffee and the scent slowly but surely enters the bedroom.
Smells so good when your nose has just woken up (everything smells extra strong and ‘new’ for a short while).
It is one of my favorite smells but haven’t found a perfume that captures the exact aroma and ambience you’re talkibg about. Still holding out hope that someone creates one!
Hello all! No poems from me, too much to do today.
Yesterday came home from Malaga 20C sun to 10C cloudiness. Serge Lutens “Fumerie Turque” eased the journey. Notes are honey, juniper berries, tonka, chamomile, patchouli, vanilla, rose, redcurrant, tobacco, styrax and suede.
Today I’m getting ready to go back to DUS, where I’ve taken an AirBnB through to the end of June. Looking forward to more stability rather than the weekly hotel check-in/ check-out palaver. SOTD is Robert Piguet “Fracas”.
Top: orange blossom, mandarin, green leaves, peach, hyacinth and bergamot;
Mid: coriander, carnation, tuberose, violet root, geranium, osmanthus, jasmine, lily-of-the-valley, iris, rose, narcissus and gardenia;
Base: sandalwood, amber, musk, oakmoss, cedar and vetiver.
This is my new FB to celebrate the first invoice from my new contract. I don’t know why it’s marketed ‘for women’ as it’s pretty unisex to my nose, as far as floral perfumes go anyway.
Really great perfumes, like Fracas, defy gender. You smell absolutely wonderful.
It must be a bit of a shock to go from Mediterranean weather to Northern-European weather.
Fracas is fabulous on anyone. 🙂 I haven’t had any in a long time . I should see if so can get a decent from a decanter.
French Kiss on first date
Le Wild for the engagement
And for the wedding…..?

❤️
Nice going…I assume you were describing the perfume? 😉
Too cute!
Oh, the suspense in that last line.
I know. I can’t plan my perfume until we set a date!
I’m testing (and loving) Annick Goutal Eau de Hadrien EDT this morning, and marvelling at the abilities of some here to compose wonderful haikus in English when that isn’t their first language. I struggle with composition, and I’ve barely made it off the North American continent!
I cannot write haiku either — all I can do is format the poll 😉
No poetry for my today. Woke up early and actually paid some bills before my cup of chai tea. Now I need to deposit that check to make sure that I can keep myself and milk, bread, and a full tank of gas (don’t worry, my freezer is full of food, so I won’t starve). I just love the fact that where I work is switching over to instead of getting paid weekly, it will be every two weeks. If they do the paying us once a month, I will spit nails. Sorry for the whining.
I am spending the day in Amouage Epic. I can’t get enough of the women’s version.
Bills come before poetry! Good luck with the budgeting.
Monthly paychecks would be he death of me. Just started getting paid weekly and I can see why you would miss it. I bet you smell fabulous.
My SOTD inspired me, although it’s not in proper haiku-form. Well here goes!

This is from yesterday evening…

Urinetown the Musical
Won’t try to match scent
Something in the weather yesterday gave me a low grade headache and nausea. Nothing to stop me from going out last night. But…I woke up and saw clock said 8:37 am, so I decided to sleep a little longer. Next time I looked, it was 11:22. I have never done that. Talk about killing a day…. will at least make it to evening church. Headache and nausea all gone thankfully.
Glad you were able to sleep it off!
Ha!
How was the show?
Ha! Yeah, I’ve done that, too. I find it disconcerting. Hope you’re feeling better, though
Good morning, all. I have been reading and loving your haiku, and started several, but never quite got anything good enough to share. I can share this, though: the pile of assignments is now marked! Yay! Maybe my haiku could have been
Home work and perfume

I wore my birthday-to-be perfume for the marking. I’ve used up about 6 little samples from Chanel:
La Pausa

Bother. An extra syllable in the last line, but please indulge me. If you had read the sort of prose that I just spent the weekend on, you too might insert an extra syllable or two, I think. Actually, I wanted to write something beautiful about La Pausa as the smell of amethyst, but my mind is stuck in Y3 logic, and though I have concluded that this perfume does indeed smell amethyst-grey, I couldn’t haiku it to save myself.
To work now. Be well, poetic and fragrant, NST.

juggernaut called the wind, and I’ll bathe with shower wipes safe inside my van, thank you very much. Really, I smell like picaridin. This is tick city out here. Don’t tell Robin, it will give her nigtmares for sure. ????
Celebration or
comfort, what I spray or dab
are scented signposts.
SOTD = almost the last of my sample of the original Agent Provocateur EdP. A day late with my haiku; yesterday was my 22nd wedding anniversary.
Congratulations, and hope you a had a proper celebration of your anniversary! Great haiku, too —
Oh, very happy anniversary!
Happy anniversary, Jalapeño! It sounds like you may need to get No. 22, if you don’t already have it!
Wowzers! What a fabulous accomplishment! Congrats!
Congrats and I love the haiku!
Thanks, folks! It was a low-key celebration. We were already scheduled for a game day and watching the Kentucky Derby with some friends of ours, so we brought along a bottle of bubbly to share the occasion. I had a lot of fun.
Happy anniversary, may there be many more filled with joy and bubbly!
I’m just getting back to wearing perfume since a nasty bout of flu some weeks ago messed up my sense of smell. I tried once or twice a couple of weeks ago, but found it was a mistake. I could only smell the harshest and most synthetic notes of the scent and I felt as if I had just applied bug spray or disinfectant.
Beloved perfume
I’ve greatly missed your sweet fragrance
How I hate the flu!
Glad you’re feeling better, 50_Roses!
Bleah on the flu messing up your sense of smell! Happy to hear that you are on the road to recovery.
