Demeter Saffron ~ new fragrance

Posted by Robin on 8 October 2016 9 Comments

Demeter Saffron

Demeter has launched Saffron, the latest addition to their Fragrance Library.

Like stepping into a warm, fragrant bath, Demeter’s Saffron is enveloping and sheer at the same time. Inspired by the most expensive spice in the world, worth more than its weight in gold.

Yeah, me, too, but I am very slightly worried by “inspired by….” That could mean almost anything. I don’t expect it to be an actual distillation of saffron but I sure want it to smell like saffron!

Merhinks it will be gauzy but best to get a sample.

It could, and probably does, contain Safraleine. It’s the only saffron-like synthetic I can think of. But it also has a leathery smell, so they might have done it without it. Saffron can be quite overpowering in perfumes imo. And I doubt they use the real thing.

I might have to get a mini myself.

Maybe I’m being pedantic here, but what’s interesting to me is that what they chose to put in the picture isn’t even real saffron. It looks like safflower, which I’ve come across in markets as “false saffron”, and entirely for the color, because it doesn’t taste or smell anything like saffron.

    Just for a comparison:

    real saffron:

Given that no real saffron or safflower is in the perfume, and that that much real saffron would actually cost more than the perfume, it might be too much to ask ;-)
