Penhaligon’s Oud de Nil & Alizarin ~ new fragrances

Posted by Robin on 3 August 2016 14 Comments

Penhaligon's Oud de Nil and Alizarin

Penhaligon's has launched two new fragrances in the brand's Trade Routes Collection, Oud de Nil and Alizarin.

Oud de Nil ~ "Reminiscent of the atmosphere of a bygone era, the new addition to the Trade Routes collection captivate different facets of the fantasised journey in the land of the Pharaohs. Clean white robes billowing like sails on The Nile, the desert wind bringing scents of jasmine and exotic fruits embellishing a dry desert base of precious woods." Additional notes include bergamot, grapefruit, rose, geranium, orange blossom, oud, papyrus, guaiac wood, resins and amber.

Alizarin ~ "An intriguing and intense Oud inspired by the red dye, Alizarin, cultivated in Egypt since antiquity. Intense and mysterious, Alizarin conjures whispers of oud, precious vetiver and rare resins. A homage to the millenary tradition of fragrance in Egypt, it is reminiscent of ancient and traditional perfumes." Additional notes include mandarin, narcisse, tuberose, orris, mimosa, leather and olibanum.

Penhaligon's Oud de Nil and Alizarin were developed by perfumer Christian Provenzano. They are available in 100 ml Eau de Parfum.

Aaaargh, they haven’t, have they? They’ve perpetuated a mistake: they’ve obviously called their perfume Oud de Nil because of Eau de Nil, but that’s not a French word. The correct term would be Eau du Nil (Nil is masculine and ‘de le’ = ‘du’). Therefore the perfume should be called Oud du Nil.

Bela, so nice to see you! Penhaligon’s ought to be sticking with the English anyway — Oud of the Nile. Or better yet, stop making more oud fragrances 😉

Hi, Robin, I’m sorry I don’t visit more often. Yes, enough already with the oud!

      Hi, Bela!

I guess this is what Luca Turin refers to as “cod French.”

I don’t know French, sadly, but it strikes me as a groaner of a pun. Maybe different to UK ears.

        Hello, nozknoz!

‘Cod French’ is the bane of my life. LOL!

        It’s ‘orrible. 😉

Correct or not, that pale celadon green has always been known in English as “eau de nil”, not “eau du nil”, and so the Penhaligon’s name is a perfectly acceptable play on this. “Eau du Nil” may be proper French, but “eau de nil” isn’t French, it’s naturalized if not native English, and there’s no point in arguing it’s not correct: neither is our pronunciation of “Paris”, yet there you are.

I do know what ‘eau de nil’ refers to, and, naturalised or not, it stems from an incorrect pronunciation of a French term. The English pronunciation of ‘Paris’ doesn’t involve changing its spelling, whereas the faulty pronunciation of ‘eau du Nil’ does.

Btw, no one forced you to read my comment if it offended you so much.

Is is just me or they are launching something weekly these days? I do like the Trade Routes concept, though, and will give these a sniff.

This brings them to 5 for the year — they are tied with Byredo 😉
