Our same old open thread poll: talk about anything you like — the perfume you’re wearing today, the fragrance you've worn the most so far this summer, whatever.
Or, ask a question about fragrance, then see if anyone else has asked a question that you can answer…

Just came back from the farmers market and I am making a yummy sandwich for a picnic in the park today. Got some beautiful tomatoes and will make some pesto and slap it all together on baguette. Maybe add some cheese..
Beautiful weather today so I am wearing Moon Bloom to match.
I am not a white floral kind of girl, and my first impression of this was so so. But today its really working! Love it!
Yummy! Fresh produce is one of the best things about summer.
Agreed! Everything taste better when you buy in season 🙂
Which farmer’s market do you go to in the city?
I’m heading down to Union Square today to visit that one and do a little shopping.
Speaking of Hiram Green, I just placed an order for a sample of their latest, Dilettante.
Enjoy your picnic! Gorgeous looking day!
We go to a small one on the UES. It has everything though, and you can compost and textile recycle like the one in Unions Sq. We use to frequent the one in Union Sq when we lived in Chelsea but with the 2 babies in tow its hard to get down that way. Have a great time!
Where did you place your order for the Dilettante sample? Didn’t know they came out with a new one. How do you find that line? Moon Bloom has some lasting power for a natural..
Where on UES?
I just missed going to my old one in CA as I didn’t get going early enough to stop by before meeting a friend for lunch. Was going to look for pluots but it may be early…
I am not sure where you lived in CA but I lived in SF for many years and you can’t find all the produce out here as you do in CA, sorry to disappoint. There are several in the UES if you google green market you can find all of them
Sounds yummy! I sent my husband out for tomatoes earlier for omelettes this morning.
Certain white florals do it for me(Fracas, Wit, and Songes) and others don’t. But I’ve had those moments where they went from “nope” to “oh yeah!”
Enjoy your picnic????
Enjoy your omelettes with your hubby <3
Farmer’s markets are one of the best things about summer! How is Moon Blossom lasting on you?
I think it is long lasting for a natural, but wears close to the skin. I am using it from a dabber so maybe if you spray it you might have more projection.
Thanks to Elisa P I got to try Shangri La-its peachy and lovely. The little a dabbed lasted! I was smitten!
Wearing L’Artisan Seville l’Aube today and it’s been my most worn perfume of the summer. I went through a couple decants last year, got a big bottle through the swapmeet and I’ve fallen in love, it smells great to me at every stage and holds up beautifully in the heat and humidity.
I’ve got a new decant of this one on it’s way!
Love it too. Definitely holds up beautifully.
I just purchased a bottle of this. Because you can never have enough perfume that holds up to heat and humidity.
It is lovely and lush and rich.
SOTD is Byredo Green. It is frustrating me that somewhere in my basement are the boxes of perfume that contain things I want. I bought a second bottle of Milk of Flowers after a month of living here and I suspect that I’ll end up buying a 15ml size of Sideris. After poking around the boxes the other day, I am beginning to suspect that they’re all the way in the back, probably under some furniture. Feh.
Figures!
Went to sleep with a couple of sprays of Diptyque’s Eau des Sens, loved the smell it left on my pj’s and so sprayed some more this morning. It still has a bit of that masculine edge to it, but the orange blossom reigns. I’m liking it more than I originally did. Appreciate it’s lasting power.
Looking forward to doing a little shopping later as a reward for my tough work week. Lot’s of good sales out there!
I did a little shopping after work yesterday, but the lines in some stores were crazy because of the sales. I ended up with nothing. Hope you find some good stuff!
Working working this weekend. I should be studying before summer school starts but I don’t wanna. 😛
Wearing some vintage Ma Griffe parfum from a sweet little mini. I love parfum minis, though this one has a screw top over a plastic stopper and it’s annoying to get out. Still, it smells lovely.
I remember this fondly, if vaguely. When I sniffed the current version it smelled awful. Not sure what’s at fault, reformulation or my memory. Maybe my taste has changed over 40 years, but the current one doesn’t smell familiar.
It’s not super distinct to me, but it is a beautiful floral with musky undertones. A cypre without the complicated bits.
During the Smell Bent garage sale I picked up one of their pre-release frankensmellies. It’s called Celebrity Garden Party and described as “mimosas in the Hollywood Hills”. There is a definite citrus vibe, but I don’t smell the champagne…
I really like the low price point and clever descriptions of Smell Bent but nothing I’ve tried has really been great. I feel like I’m missing something.
Beautiful day to trim the hedges all morning wearing the herbal patchouli Nightscape.
Thanks galbanumgal!
Post shower Tauer PHI Rose Kandahar etc.
Funny how I hated yardwork as a youngun’ but really enjoy it now! Invigorating!
Peace! Carpe Diem. 🙂
We’ve been in a hotel room almost a year, and I can’t wait to garden again! (I have to steal rosemary from the shopping center landscaping across the street!) Hope to close on a house late July. Meantime, imagine me doing some of that yardwork for you. 🙂
Best of luck and strength with the house hunting, SicilianaNC ! 😀
Anyone remember Levis Type 1 jeans?
Dark indigo, cartoony bright stitching, ad campaign with steer stampeding avoiding two hipsters wearing them?
Bought a pair when TJMaxx couldn’t get rid of them at 8 bucks.
Wore once, threw in the back of the closet and forgot. Found them a few months ago spring cleaning and wear every chance I get.
Shopping in your own house. Sweet! LOL. 😉
Sweet!! I need to do that!
I just rediscovered a pair of shorts that are going to come in realllllly useful this summer! (I hope.)
Love that. A blouse of mine dropped to the floor and ended up other items. Like having a new one….
I’m going out on a date tonight at Chef’s Table at Brooklyn Fare, which is a Michelin starred restaurant. This is what I’m planning on wearing, new Agnes b. white dress, Chanel bag and Serge Lutens La vierge de fer. I might change it for NARCISO EDP, I’m torn.
I love Vierge de Fer, great summer scent.
Have fun! Super exciting.
Love your outfit! Huge Agnes b. fan.
I’d go with the Narciso EDP..
Sounds yummy, enjoy.
Oh wow! It’s a 3 star! That’s a really, really nice date. I’ve never been, but it’s on the list. Do report back. The outfit sounds perfect. I personally would wear minimal perfume to a place like that. I wouldn’t want to compete with the food ????
Great outfit. Chanel bag is a nice touch.
Oh, do enjoy yourself. And I think the NARCISO EDP would be so appropriate for a date. Either way, you will look and smell beautiful!
Yawssa ..that is one hot date! 🙂
What a special date!!
Hope you have a great time! let us know.
Feeling mildly unwell and a little short on optimism, therefore wearing pajamas all day and Yves Rocher Moment de Bonheur for a spiritual lift. Ginger ale, crackers, and a long nap ahead.
Sounds like a good plan. Hope you feel better soon!
Feel better! Sounds like you have a soothing day ahead.
I hope you feel better!
Stay comfy in those PJs and get to feeling better soon!
Optimism is somewhat lacking here too on the continent…Moment du Bonheur is such a lovely and happy rose, one of my favourites. I also have the fraiche version, I think I received it for free, also nice, more focussed on the apple note. Hope that, and a nap, helps Olenska!
Feel better soon, Olenska!
Spray more perfume, get some sleep and feel better!
I’ve been napping with you. feel better soon.
Thanks everybody for these kind words. I rested most of the day and plan to do the same tomorrow… sticking to cream-of-wheat too. Good night all.
That sounds like a comforting day. Hope you are doing better soon.
Gorgeous summer day here, went shopping and brought home a big watermelon and fixings to make some nice salads, plus marshmallows to make s’mores. Unfortunately I was unable to find graham crackers here in Quebec, not sure if they are sold here. I am not sure what to use as a substitute – maybe weetabix?
As for perfume, I am wearing SL La Réligieuse.
hmm…no graham crackers 🙁
LU Petit Ecolier biscuits with the chocolate sides turned inward to the toasted marshmallow between. 🙂
Brilliant! I love those cookies.
Perfect substitute! Ixnay to the Weetabix.
Mmmmm.
Yes!! The perfect answer. I tried a packet of McVitie’s digestive biscuits but they were rather crumbly. Thanks for the excellent suggestion!
Oh, interesting, I always thought graham crackers were digestive biscuits but obviously there are differences. Are they in the same general area though?
I finally found something I really like in the large new batch of samples I’ve been going through the whole week – Rouge Bunny Rouge! So far I tried Embers and Tenera, and I love both. But while I just love embers, with Tenera, I got a feeling that it might be one of those embarrassing things when you think that you absolutely love a fragrance, and then realize that it just really reminds you of the smell of your old dirty sock monkey, to which you are irrationally attached even though you’re already 38… Tenera definitely reminds me of Arquiste’s The Architect Club by virtue of its woods and vanilla, but Tenera also has pepper and thyme…I think it is gorgeous, but perhaps you can help me to remember what sock monkey it reminds me of? Or just tell me that I am bonkers, and it is a beautiful and original perfume in its own right?
I haven’t tried this, but Luca Turin has recommended the brand. Of course, he has occasionally admitted a fondness for stranger things than sock monkeys. 😉
Put on Les Nuits d’Hadrien this morning, but it hasn’t motivated me to pack for our move. I’m feeling quite like Olenska…feel better!
I wanted to mention (and thank Robin) that I bought a bottle of Chanel Allure Homme Edition Blanche, which she mentioned in a reply to her post about Chanel Boy recently. I bought unsniffed which I very rarely do (but this time I knew I could give it to my 27 yr old son if I didn’t like it), because I couldn’t find it anywhere to sniff or buy a sample. And it turns out that I really like it. In fact, I think it could grow to be a favorite warm weather fragrance. Kevin’s review on NST is great so I won’t bother to review it, but to be succinct: soft lemony woods.
But (and here’s the perfume nerd in me), I have to make a comment on the beautiful bottle. Now, I’m not generally a bottle person – doesn’t make that much difference to me and I’d never buy something for the bottle alone (not judging – just not something I’d do – I buy plenty of other stuff and for crazy reasons at times). But this bottle is not only really attractive, it’s a pleasure to hold in the hand and even more, I would love it for its spray nozzle alone. The fragrance comes out in the perfect amount and a wonderful fine mist. Oh, how I love that quality. Here’s a time when decants won’t do – the bottle gives me almost as much pleasure as the fragrance!
I have a bottle of that, and it a pretty perfect perfume experience.
You smell great, springpansy ! Enjoy!
*it is a
So glad it worked out!
Back for a weekend in England; had some landscape gardeners in to discuss the next phase of turning the weed-infested jungle out back into a garden. Two old armchairs came back beautifully re-upholstered, one Queen Anne style in a renaissance fabric of griffins and urns on a creamy-yellow background that looks like it is being caught in the last golden glow of a setting sun, and the other a Victorian chair now in William Morris artichoke in green and gold.
I am being rather fickle in my SOTDs, using FBs I have at home. I started before showering in Hermès “Santal Massoïa” which I don’t love and therefore don’t mind washing off. Then Baruti “Indigo” which did a half day. Now I’m in my new Olibère “Escapade à Byzance” which is doing a wonderful boozy/spicy thing on my skin and making me very happy. :^)
You’re chairs sound wonderful, Koenigsberg! I need to refocus on the Baruti samples. I’m not sure yet which one I like best as I’ve enjoyed all of them so far.
Silver Iris for me today. Question for you: has anyone tried Buhara parfums or knows where to get it?
You smell lovely
Oh what a day! It’s 35*C outside today so in the morning I went to the swimming pool to cool down and the rest of the day I spent mostly on pouring another glass of water to drink.
I also picked a package at the post office, some new goodies from Laboratorio Olfattivo arrive to tests. I especially like the one called Di-Vino. It smells like a sunny vineyard.
SotD is Eau d’Italie Acqua Decima, I needed something very fresh today.
And right now a storm has started, pour that rain down, it’s so dry here.
You’re welcome to some of our storms; we’re having far too many. Including maddeningly on Thursday, so that flooding disrupted voting in many Remain areas.
Slow start to my day today. I’m in a smidge of Loulou after reading Jessica’s review and since I’m in the AC now.
I have a b-day party to go to tonight and the woman who can’t hug me and keeps her distance from me because I wear perfume will be there. Ugh. She had hives for several weeks a while back and I suspect she’s convinced it was related to my perfume wearing eventhough we only see each other occasionally.
I might go with Eau de Polder since it’s an oil and very unobtrusive. I can always say I was just rolling around in the hay ????
If she’s not the birthday celebrant…anything goes is my opinion. Have fun at the party!
Good point. Thanks!
Why not make life easier for others….there are plenty of other times we can wear perfume…including to bed!!!
I appreciate your viewpoint! So tricky to find that balance between honoring one’s own pleasure and desire, and respecting people’s displeasure, right? Especially in such a crowded city like NYC where one is in close proximity to other people much of the time. So far, I think I’ve managed being aware and respectful pretty well, as I haven’t noticed anyone next to me on the train switching seats, lol. And trying to make life a little less difficult for others is my day job????
I think if I was in your position, I would not mind much her displeasure, but if she thinks she has medical symptoms like hives, however unreasonably, I would just accept what she says.
And I’ve decided to layer Andrea Maack Coven over the oil and it’s fantastic!
Heading to Central Park for a picnic with family members who are visiting for the weekend. The weather is really beautiful here today. I decided to get our food from Pappardella, instead of preparing things at home and bring a bottle of wine. After a hard week at work, I just wanted to stay away from the kitchen and relax. On Hermes Un Jardin En Mediterranee. Very fresh and green. I love the fig note on this perfume. Have a nice weekend everyone!
I love Un Jardin En Mediterranee! You smell awesome!
I was in CP as well for a picnic
It’s a beautiful sunny day here and the lawn needs mowing (again). Wish I had some tomatoes like lovestosmellgood. I’m wearing Bronze Goddess because it seems like summer has truly arrived in the Pacific Northwest.
Bronze Goddess is awesome! You smell divine!
Sitting at work for now, but later today my brother and his new wife are coming over to swim in our neighborhood pool, grill out, and maybe catch a movie. Good times! I looooove summer!
SOTD: Forbidden Love, by La Fleur by Livvy. Got this sample in this month’s Scent Trunk, and I’m still deciding whether I like it or not. It’s base is oud, tobacco, and vanilla, but all I’m getting is a burst of vanilla. We’ll see where it takes me this afternoon! 🙂
How do you like Scent Trunk? They keep sending me emails to try them. I already receive Olfactif each month. Had them for about 3 years now. I like them a lot. They expose me to fragrances that I probably never would have tried. Isn’t ScentTrunk more mainstream fragrances than niche? Just curious about what you think.
I am wearing Chanel eau de cologne today. I am happy that finally the summer is here.
It was a gorgeous day indeed! Perfect weekend.
SOTD: Mohur. I’m almost through my sample, and I don’t think I’ll miss this one when it’s gone (although I might be wrong!). It does make chores more . . .glamorous.
Not a perfume question: does anyone have a favorite use for whole mung beans? I have a bunch of recipes using moong dal, but I wasn’t thinking very clearly and bought a bunch of whole beans instead of the dal.
There are Indian curries using whole beans but I tend to just sprout them and make stir fry. They’re gorgeous fresh compared to the slimy ones in packets.
SOTD started off as Bois Farine with Santal Carmin added mid afternoon.
I probably have enough that I could sprout some of them! I’m also interested in making pesarattu, since that would give me an excuse to use my food mill.
SOTD = PdE Tabac Tabou 2015
Love this one but don’t wear it enough. Shape-shifting green tobacco, takes me back to visiting a tobacco processing warehouse in Cuba. For a beautiful review, go visit Christos at Memory of Scent. Looking forward to the 2016 edition!
Spotted in NYC yesterday, besides the ugly shoes I wrote about yesterday: blouses that are open in the back from the right above the bra line and flares out. I saw 2 women wearing this type of blouse with hook strap bra showing. God help us if this is “in”! I felt like going up to them and asking if the manufacturer ran out of fabric and decided to sell the blouses anyway and was it half-price because it’s missing half the fabric.
I need to revisit my sample of Tabac Tabou–recall liking it pretty well. I should feel like an old fuddy-duddy for not liking visible bras/straps, but I still feel it’s tacky.
Maybe at the beach it’s fine but in the city and likely officewear – yuck!
Tobacco is such a delicious smell, isn’t it? I used to sniff inside my dad’s humidor all the time when he had a pipe.
You mean split-back or ‘fly-away’ backs on the blouses? Yes, those are ‘in’ at some retailers. The key, for anyone inclined to wear one, is to wear (a) a tank top or (b) the right kind of bra (or no bra) with it–a racerback or some type of bralette made for layering. Not really my own style, but nice if done right…and cringe-worthy if done wrong!
http://www.express.com/clothing/women/express-one-eleven-split-back-striped-tee/pro/6351749/cat430028
This!
I like those blouses, but I always thought the point of them was not to wear a bra. Or to wear one of those lacey soft ones that are sort of halfway to bikini tops anyway.
It would be wayyy too windy where I live to wear one of those with no bra! 😉
I know what you mean, but I think some of these tops are structured enough that if somebody wanted to pull it off, they could: https://www.everlane.com/collections/womens-newest-arrivals/products/womens-cotton-poplin-cutaway-tank-truenavy
It is supposed to have overlapping panels that flare with occasional peek-a-boo. The woman I walked behind on Friday had half her back open to the elements with her ratty bra showing. She got the wrong size or really, her body type was not suited to this style at all.
And I do see from the link in Creosote’s comment that some split backs don’t have overlaps but look hpow skinny the model is. Also, probably not appropriate for office wear.
Summer in the city is crazy in regards to dress. I’m aghast at what I see worn by all shapes and sizes. And yes, many of today’s trends have large portions of tops missing.
I will say I do love the off the shoulder tops which are huge this season. Very romantic if done well.
Megyn Kelly seems to be on a crusade to make it popular!
You know I adore Tabac Tabou, so obviously I think you smell great. I’m really curious about the 2016 lot and any differences.
As for the fashion, I have yet to see anyone IRL who has styled those open-backed tops in a flattering or creative way. I’m sure they could be cute, but not with one’s dingy old bra cutting tightly across one’s back, which is the only way they wear ’em here.
The style is flattering for androgynous figures but the more Rubenesque should stay away.
I am old school – no part of the bra should be visible. And I cannot go braless so those types of tops are right out.
Tabac Tabou didn’t smell like tobacco to me for some reason. It didn’t wow me.
Doesn’t smell of tobacco to me either, but it does smell like narcissus and once I adjusted my expectations I fell in love. I know it isn’t everybody’s favorite, though. It is unusually unctuous, which put me off at first.
It smells like tobacco leaf after it had been picked and in the process of being graded.
The first storm of the monsoon season hit my house yesterday–yaaay, rain! It’s been unusually cloudy and is only supposed to be around 100 degrees today, so I’m considering it a cold snap and wearing Cabochard. ????
Have a wonderful weekend, everyone, wherever you are!
Glad to hear the monsoon has arrived for you.
Happy weekend, all! I am back from 2 weeks in Germany. We had a wonderful time visiting friends and family, and there were things for the boys to do besides castles and cathedrals (including a good amount of shopping). The weather was cool while we were there, which was perfect. Managed to be indoors most of the time when it was raining. And thanks to whoever recommended Parfumerie Albrecht in Frankfurt! It was a really mecca for niche perfumes, including many that I had never even heard of. They had some German brands, including Lengling by Parfums Munich, and I bought the wonderful gourmand A La Carte (No. 6). My first time to buy a vacation souvenir perfume. It starts out with oud, but becomes a beautiful gourmand. My husband loved it (he is becoming a little more indulgent of my perfume habit).
On the home front, we now have to contend with a job search, as he did wind up getting let go at the end of May. He is going to Seattle next week to interview. I love Seattle, but I hope whatever job he gets allows some telecommuting, as I don’t relish the thought of moving again and having to get a new medical license in another state and start a new practice all over again (not to mention uprooting the boys). Just have to roll with it.
So glad you enjoyed Parfumerie Albrecht, it was me that recommended it. My husband has bought me all kinds of lovely things there on his business trips.
Best of luck to your husband on his job search!!
Thanks, Cazaubon!
What a lovely trip, Sapphire! Wishing you the best in dealing with these changes.
Thank you for the good wishes.
Welcome back Sapphire! It sounds like you had fun on vacation! Congrats on your vacation perfume. As to hubby, I wish him well on his job search and that whatever happens, it will work out for your family home-wise and professionally.
I can understand lawyers having to go through some kind of requalification on a state level but one would think that the practice of medicine is pretty universal in the U.S. and any differences are due to incomprehensible legislative nuances.
You would think. I guess they have to try to weed out people posing as doctors who never went to medical school, among other things.
Hallooooo Perfumistas!Long time no see!!What.a.year!!!Ophthalmology exams, dealing with the death and estate of my Mom’s late husband, won love, lost love…Fun and tragic at the same time.2016 will be memorable at least.More than ever I’m feeling slightly overwhelmed by life,I’m taking a couple of days off of work, just to regroup. On Tuesday I am turning the big 40.Not sure if I should celebrate or just cry the whole day like I did when I turned 30.Lol.Anyway!Just wanted to say Hello to everyone, glad to see NST still alive and very much kicking.I’m soooo behind on new releases and news, but hope to catch up soon.Happy Weekend everyone!Johanob
So good to see you back here. You’re wise to take a few days off to regroup when life seems overwhelming. This too shall pass.
Thank you for the encouragement!xo
Good to see you back Johanob! I hope the regrouping helps. Believe me, truely, life gets better after 40, and here, even after 50!
We booked a holiday to Capetown/gardenroute next year for my husband’s 55th. I’m not sure if you are in Joburg or Capetown, if it is the latter by the time we will leave I hope to get some perfumery tips.
Hi Hamamelis!Fun holiday booked!!That is going to be great fun!The garden route is really beautiful.I am in Joburg, but know the Capetown perfumery scene very well!!Haha!!Feel free to email me at icloud dot com, will gladly hand over a mini guide of the best places to shop!xo
Glad to have you back on the site! I so know how you feel! Sorry to hear about your mom’s husband. That has to be difficult.
You are not alone with the age thing. When I turned 30, I rebelled big time and went with some friends and got a tattoo. When I turned 40, I just cried and cried. Now at 43 (just turned 43 in May), I wanted to get another tattoo in honor of the musician Prince. I wanted to get his infamous symbol. My friends have been trying to talk me out of it. But, hey, YOLO! Know that everything in this world happens for a reason. We win some and we lose some.
So glad to have you back!
Check out Sheila E.’s tattoo of the symbol to help make up your mind.
Oh, I definitely will. Thanks for sharing that!
Just saw this! Gotta have it too!
Thank you!!I do like the tattoo idea myself…quite a bit!!Maybe 40 is the time to get that elusive butterfly on my shoulder I’ve always wanted!!:-))
Do it! 🙂
I am 50 in a few weeks, which is clearly a cosmic administrative error. But really, my 40s are where I got the experience to be good at my job and the confidence to be my real self. And I think there’s a lot of empirical evidence by now that crying over inevitable things doesn’t make them evitable, so why bother?
My suggestion: organise a meal or drinks or a party with people who mean something to you. They will be happy you’ve been around for 40 years even if you are more ambivalent about it. ;^)
Well put!
I second. Sound advice.
Celebrate the new year and all that you’ve made it through.
Totally agree. I turned 50 in April, had a big party and celebrated with family and friends my good fortune of being alive, healthy and loved. Nothing to cry over!
Well said,-and candid advice!Thank you!!xx
Nice to see you! Once you get over the initial shock of a new decade, it’s all uphill from there ????I try to not go all existential with each passing year. It can be a real buzz kill. Hope things are smooth sailing for you from here on up!
Haha!Well I woke up this morning and decided the last two days of my 30’s are gonna be AWESOME.And ring in the 40’s with a new vigor,a smile on my face, and gratitude for everything I have, everything I survived, and all the new adventures ahead!xox
Wow, you have done so much during the last year. It sounds like you have climbed a big hill and could now just stretch out and see how far you have come and admire the view! congratulations on your almost- birthday. Hope you have a happy day!
Thank you!I do like your attitude and that sentiment.Time to stretch out, yes!
I had a baby couple of months before my 40th birthday, so I was too busy to even remember it.
Good to see you back, Johanob!
Thanks!Good to be back!I wasn’t gone,just quiet!????
Hello Johanob!
I am the exact same age as Madonna (actually I’m 2 days older), and if she is rocking……I am too !!!
40 ??! You’re not even old enough to drink yet, are you ?
;D
Haha!!Old enough to KNOW to drink LESS water and more wine yes!!Haha!xx
Glad to see you back. I hope you choose to enjoy and laugh on your birthday. If I remember, last year you had a picture as your avatar? all this time I have guessed that you were still in your twenties!
Yup,it was a very recent picture too!Someone new in my life asked my age and when I said I’m turning 40 he gasped& replied.”I thought at least around 27!!” Feel good moment right there!
Welcome back Johanob! And happy almost 40!
Celebrate AND cry! That’s how it went for me..
Enjoy your days off and happy b-day.
Mr. A is out of town so it’s just me rattling around the house. I’m planning a marathon of movie-watching and book-reading this weekend. It’s just a madcap life of adventure around here. 😉
SOTD is PdN Fig Tea. It’s in heavy rotation this summer.
Now that’s my idea of a good time!
Love that scent! Great for summertime.
It’s an unusually overcast day here (which is a relief from the hot humid days we’ve had) so I’m in Bois de Violette with a relaxing day at home ahead of me!
Difficult day here, besides a house divided my husband is really ill, he has had this before, a bad infection, high fever, hopefully antibiotics will kick in soon.
Acqua Nobile Iris EdP is such a soothing perfume on a day like this.
Wishing everyone well here!
So sorry to hear about your husband. Hope he gets to feeling better really soon. Sending well wishes your way.
Thank you!
Wishing your husband a speedy recovery. And you the energy and patience to deal with it all. ;^)
Thank you Koenigsberg, and yes, that is needed 😉
I agree that Iris Noble EDP is soothing, and pretty too.
I hope the antibiotics do their job soon and that your husband starts to feel better.
Having a sick spouse is no fun for either party. I hope he gets well soon for both your sakes.
Take care of him and speedy recovery!
Take good care of yourself and hope your husband heals quickly.
Hope your husband feels better soon.
Thank you all for your kind words!
Speedy recovery to your hubby!I have forgotten how much joy perfume can give!
Hope he recovers quickly!
Happy Saturday to Everyone! Not doing anything special today besides some housework (mostly laundry – haven’t done laundry in like 2 weeks). Also, just trying to find some time this summer to catch up on some reading on my Kindle.
My SOTD is Jennifer Lopez’s “Still” (thanks Pixel:) It’s such a nice fragrance and so appropriate for the season.
So far this summer, the fragrance I probably grab the most is Pulp by Byredo. I do believe that in the dictionary the definition of summer is the notes that Pulp contains. And then, the illustration is the bottle of Pulp! LOL!
Hope everyone has a fantastic weekend!
I need to check my sample of Pulp and if it’s gone, which I suspect, think about a decant or FB. It’s so happy and fruity!
Yes……its so worth it!
Happy weekend, NST!
Scents of the day: Atelier Cologne Bois Blonds and Grand Neroli. I smell like an orange tree’s green leaves and branches. Later I’ll add Orange Sanguine to get the whole-tree experience.
The pine tree in front of our house was killed by a beetle infestation. 🙁 The city’s arborist hopes the beetles will not spread to other trees. Each home on our street has a tall pine tree giving shade plus shelter for suburban wildlife.
Now the tree-less front of my home gets more sun, so to protect my perfume-babies I moved them from my clothes closet to a cabinet in another room. Unnecessary diligence on my part, but it was an excuse to take inventory. I found I have fewer bottles than I had imagined. That’s a relief as I had never counted them. I was feeling a bit anxious that the bottles were multiplying on their own.
And even more fun, I wandered through the bottles, samples, and decants to pull out the refreshing colognes, citruses, and aromatics. I’m finding fragrances containing lavender wonderfully refreshing.
Also I’m reminded that samples and decants do indeed evaporate over time. Use ’em and waft, or lose ’em and weep.
It is nice that some good has come from a sad event. Have you thought of planting a replacement, or is this out on the public land?
What stands out for you as both refreshing and lavender-centred? :^)
The pine tree was in our front yard but technically belongs to the city. When I asked about a replacement, the arborist said he would add it to his to-do list. Hope springs eternal. 🙂
Lavenders I like are Roger & Gallet Lavande Royale, l’Occitane Lavande, Demeter Lavender, and lavender essential oil.
I should also mention Phenomene Verte and Geisha Vanilla Hinoki have an aromatic lavender facet that I enjoy, too.
It’s one of those days where you look outside and see bedraggled sparrows perched on dripping branches. A dreary, drizzly, grey half-light day! But sunny on the inside with a double spray of Olympic Orchid Seattle Chocolate and Woodcut. Perfect! Think i might just add some !!!!!!!! Cause life is full of !!!!!!!!!!!!
🙂 love your !!!!!
Done with work for the day and doused in Elisabeth W Vetiver. I broke down and got a bottle on line. It’s a really nice clean sweat/herb/musk scent. The smell of someone who has been working outdoors. It’s called EDP but wears more like a cologne which I really prefer for sunny hot days. I forget I have it on, but then get a waft of it every so often, especially if it gets on clothes. Easy daytime casual. Just the ticket for a sunny Saturday afternoon.
Happy weekend everyone!
Forgot that I have that one. I’ll have to dig it out and give it more of a try.
Sticking with one of yesterday’s SOTDs with Orange Sanguine. It seems to be just what I want right now. Lazy laundry day for me…
The absolute perfect scent for this time of year.
I just got a mini-spray of this for 100 points at Sephora. I am bringing it with me on vacay for on the go respritzing!
No perfume because my baby nephew made it here a couple of hours before I did late last night! He is perfect, obviously.
Now that I’ve done my hospital hangouts, time to explore the awesome swap packages that were also waiting for me here in America 🙂
Congrats on the new nephew!
thank you!
Congratulations Auntie jjlook!
Thank you, SD!
Congratulations on the new addition to your family!
Welcome little nephew! Congrats!
Wearing a spritz of Une Rose after my shopping spree at Barney’s with my niece. I ended up getting her two bottles – Eau de Magnolia, and a woody vanilla I had never heard of, Al Contrario by Tiziana Terenzi. She now has the beginnings of her own fragrance wardrobe!
You have got to be the coolest aunt in the world! LOL! It’s the opposite for me; my aunts would always try to take my perfumes when I was younger.
Hooray to a successful day out with the niece! You’ve taught her early to not go with the masses!
This makes me happy. 🙂
Glad to back in Cali after Florida
Assam tea for a very hot day here and after everything done I am getting mani pedi
Need some enablers to weigh in here on the buyers dilemma…imagine a woman who has oh let’s say… A bottle of TF Tobacco vanille in one shopping cart( she owns several TFs) and a bottle of box of eels in another shopping cart( she hasn’t purchased a Chanel anything since the first release of Coco)
Which shopping cart is the lucky winner?
I would go for the Chanel, its lovely!
Sounds like TF has had enough of your $$$
Most Chanel’s don’t agree with me (I know I will be in the minority). I think I may own only 2 and a bunch of samples.
But, I love, love, love Tom Ford fragrances.
My vote is for the TF 🙂
Eels. Didn’t I hear that soon the Exclusives will all be EDP and more expensive? I would get Eels now while you can and the TF at a future date.
Oh my god I just tried a sample of Tobacco Vanille and I love it. That is all I have to say.
I second the Chanel, but they work better for me in general and I’m paranoid about the future prices.
Oh my goodness I am torn
2 for TF
2 for eels
Ohhhhhh noooooooo
My vote for Bois des Iles. Beautiful and elegant!
Have you tries Box of Eels yet? If so, get it. If you haven’t, then get the TF. My 2 cents. 😀
Argh! “Tried”, not tries.
Personally I prefer the TF…
I blind bought a bottle of Bois des Iles and sprayed it just last night.
It’s pretty damn good. My best friend’s mom wore Coco and Chanel no. 5 in the 80s/90s and it reminded me of her. It smells like old skool Chanel to me. Almost like a hybrid of those 2 scents in fact.
Do you love love love it?
I like it so far…I don’t think I know it well enough to love it yet.
I’d call it a complex fragrance. The analogy I would draw is the White Album. It took me a while to get the White Album. It wasn’t instant love. Of course I think I first listened to it in my late teens maybe and I was pretty young and dumb then in the way teens can be…but after listening to it multiple times I realized it was amazing.
I also think it’s more of a fall/winter scent. I’m in San Diego and it’s pretty warm here.
My vote for Tobacco Vanille. But have you tried them both? I think that it does not matter what you have more of now, it just matters how those two compare for you and for your needs and wants.
Natalya
I need neither
I want both
I shall sleep on this momentous decision ????
You can buy a decant of Tobacco Vanille at decant.com if that helps….that’s what I have, FB being too expensive…I don’t think however decants of Chanel are available…perhaps on eBay?
My suggestion:
BdI Extrait to protect against a price increase. I wouldn’t get the BdI EDT just yet until after it’s confirmed what is happening with the Les Exclusifs. If the EDT juice changes to EDP, it would be worth a sniff and consideration for a future purchase.
TF Tobacco Vanille – Phaedon Tabac Rouge is supposedly a close enough dup at a fraction of the price. I’ve never done a side x side so perhaps worth doing so before committing to either.
That’s interesting about Tobacco Rouge, I gotta try it!
Tabac Rouge, I mean
Hello there. I am wearing a lovely sample I received of Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille and I absolutely adore it. Worked this morning so yay for overtime and now we are just relaxing. The day is drizzly and overcast. A nice break from the Texas heat. Happy weekend y’all!!
I am sure TV was a great companion. I LOVE it 🙂
In OJ Frangipani today as I drove around the local mountain (Mt Diablo for the No Cal folks) to meet a friend for lunch. One of my favorite drives to do. Nice, windy road through countryside. He and I spent two hours sharing our recent family events…
Stopped for gas near my parents’ place on the way back. I’m crazy, but I was enjoying the above 100 degree heat… (It is 100 now, two hours later…). Tomorrow high projected to be 103. But, I’ll be driving the 35 or so miles to Berkeley, with its projected high of 79. Gotta love the Bay Area…you can usually escape the cold fog of SF or escape to its cooler weather.
Yep, I remember driving back to SF through the Caldecott tunnel… Roasting hot and as soon as you get through the tunnel, roll the windows up due to the sudden temperature drop. Natural air conditioning.
Or, as I’d leave work in SF freezing during my six block walk to BART because the fog had rolled in. 40 minutes later, the doors on the train would open and the 100 degree blast would hit.
Yep, the tunnel. Instant weather changer.
I’m also enjoying a break from typical Texas weather. No drizzles, but cloudy and a breeze.
I got sucked into the outlet mall vortex yesterday (my 4.5 hour drive from San Antonio to Austin required a sanity break), so I’m doing my best to combat the smell of car engine with frequent doses from my 250ml bottle of Eau des Minimes. I’ve been resisting the Couvent des Minimes bottles at Ulta, but the mega-discount at the outlet was just too much for me. Got the orange blossom one too. Would have bought the vanilla one but there was a horde of really excited teenage girls in the way and I didn’t want to shove through to the shelf. It’s helping a bit to keep me in an even temper, but I got up grouchy to find that the car is now spewing copious amounts of fuel from the exhaust (but no longer doing the other concerning things). If we hadn’t discovered it INSIDE the garage I would have been better pleased. Apparently, the new fuel injectors we bought weren’t actually compatible (“oops,” says the parts guy) and we have to wait for new ones and take fiddly engine stuff apart again on Monday.
Sunday’s SOTD is a massive dose of Alpha Musc. I was re-arranging the perfume cupboard and found that my bottle was half evaporated because the cap was wonky and it necessitated covering myself with super-concentrated perfume to fix. It’s the only musk I have encountered that smells a bit cat-butt to me, so I imagine I smell like I rolled in the litter box to everybody else. Can y’all smell me overseas? If AT&T has another huge Austin outage today, they may broadcast it as a fiber cut but we will all know that my sillage melted the infrastructure.
I was wondering MikasMinion, here overseas, what my cat had been up to. Now I understand 😉
Had a party for my daughter’s 3rd birthday today and realized I only put on Banana Boat Sport spf 50 today. It is unscented but strangely I tend to like to the smell of lingering sunscreen…even ones w/ no added fragrance. Reminds of summer, the pool, etc.
I am so grateful that I started posting on this blog this January after reading it for years. Perfume makes me happy and reading about all your fragrance adventures and comments in general makes me even happier. Thanks so much for being such a kind and generous community.
I love this community as well 🙂
Me too!
It’s definitely been a Guerlain weekend. Yesterday was vintage Jicky and today is Shalimar.
What is a good straight vetiver scent? I have and love Fat Electrician, however I don’t think of it as “straight” vetiver at all. I do not like vetiver in “cologne” setting, with citrus (or with lavender or mint, for that matter). Any suggestions?
Have you ruled out the summer vetivers Robin suggested? (https://nstperfume.com/2016/06/14/5-perfumes-vetiver-fragrances-for-summer/)
I’ll throw in my hat for L’Artisan Timbuktu, which is mostly vetiver on me with some sour mango at the start and a whisper of patchouli. It’s like a dry, still room in a hot place.
Oh yeah, Robin had summer vetivers written up! I have to study that! I think though I would be looking more for fall or even winter vetivers. Like I mentioned, I tend to not like them in a “traditional cologne” setting.
Demeter Vetiver!
encre noir
O yes, how could I forget Encre Noir! I love it and, moreover, I have it. Why did I forget about it!
Catching up now on posts/comments; congrats to all who’re enjoying good things (picnics, perfumes, new nephews, etc.), and peace and hope to all who’re suffering problems (illness, jobs, moves, cars, etc.).
Before going out for my birthday yesterday, I took a nice warm soak in lavender bath salts. For the clean-up portion, instead of using lavender soap as usual, I reached for an old, half-used bottle of Crabtree & Evelyn Nantucket Briar shower gel. I had forgotten how much I like that stuff (I always wished the perfume smelled more like the shower gel) and I was rather pleased with how I smelled afterward. 😉 I wanted to try topping it off with Brit Rhythm, but couldn’t find my sample, so just went with Diptyque’s Eau Lavande.
I think I need to invest in some more lavender options…
Belated Happy Birthday, FearsMice! I lament the closing of the Crabtree & Evelyn at the mall near me.
Thank you, Hajusuuri!
I am wearing AG Songes Monoi body oil , it is very hot today so staying in for now, I will go out for dinner later with some friends.
Bombay Bling today! Fruity goodness 😉
Heh, I just got a mango six-pack from Costco for my mom! I am allergic to fresh mangoes but love mango salsa and dried mangoes.
hajusuuri, I am allergic to fresh mangoes too. Are you okay eating mango salsa and dried mangoes?? That would be super exciting news, if that was the case!!
yukiej, I’ve had no problem with the salsa nor the preserved mangoes, in moderation. I did a little bit more research into what it is in mangoes that was allergenic and I was surprised to find out that the sap of the fresh mango fruit contains the same substance as poison ivy! Who knew? So even while grocery shopping I tend to steer away from the mangoes and will only go near them by special request.
I have a cousin-in-law who is allergic to fresh peaches and nectarines but have no problems when they’re cooked.
SOTD = Dior La Colle Noir
When I wore this the first time, I didn’t like it. I think it was because I used too much. Today, I wore a tiny spritz and it was lovely – clearly a rose. The one spritz lasted 4 hours. Conclusion, I don’t need a full bottle but would be very happy with a mini. As it is, my sample will probably last a year!
I made a dent in my freebiemeet packages this weekend and will be preparing some more. I will email the recipients in the next day or two so you know it’s coming. If you don’t hear from me, that means your package is still in the pipeline.
SOTD was Caron “Pour un Homme”, inspired by Tiffanie’s list of lavender scents yesterday. It doesn’t have great lasting power, but is cheap as chips so you can just spray away. (I didn’t though I ended up doing work stuff to catch up on time lost last week).
I have 2 or 3 Olivia Giacobetti scents for the week ahead, but not enough for a full week. (I know it’s technically a Friday Challenge only, but it amuses me to expand it to a full week when I can. I like the ‘discipline’ as otherwise I’m just sampling stuff at random, which I find oddly frustrating).
Anyway my idea for the week ahead is to fill in the gaps in the same way as a bad online supermarket algorithm. E.g. I’ll substitute “L’Artisan Bottega Veneta Intreccio #1” with something by Bottega Veneta, purely matching on words, and see what oddities ensue.
Well, Weather Channel is saying it is 104 outside… That’s probably in full sun. I think it’s likely a balmy 98 in the shade… Berkeley was about 72… I’m wafting Narciso, which has good longevity on me. Hopefully, no one at church found it too strong. I caught whiffs and felt lovely. I just want to keep spraying more and more….
Nice brunch on the bay with a few HS friends. Lots of laughter but also sharing our various physical complaints… Gads, where does youth go???
