“My immediate thought was something like, ‘But I’m not J. Lo, so how’s it going to work?’” she said of the idea to do a perfume at all, which was proposed by a friend and former co-worker. “I’m not really a celebrity person, but just by chance, my name is known a little bit, which I keep trying to deny, but it is. Then I think, well, if it is, maybe I’ll cash in.”
— Vogue editor Grace Coddington on her upcoming fragrance for Comme des Garçons. Read more at Grace Coddington: The Fragrance at The New York Times.
Oh goodness…..I am speechless (but then again, not surprised)…..seems to be quite a bit of “cashing in” these days…..
I did not take it in any terrible way, actually thought it was sort of funny and more honest than most. She does sound like she cares about fragrance, and she clearly cared about the bottle design. So, probably she took the process more seriously than most.
I guess the title of your post “Maybe I’ll Cash In” misled me…perhaps she did put forth some effort in the process, although most of what I read of celebrity scents indicate that the person whose name is attached to the bottle was involved in the whole process. Wonder how much of that is true……
Well, I made it the title because I thought it was funny! And I’m sure many celebrities do get involved, but some don’t, and of course nobody publicizes that. Beyond that, many that do get involved have no idea what they’re doing — I’m sure in some cases the final product would be better if they stayed out of it 🙂
I’ve bumped into the actor Richard E Grant several times because of his perfumes – now there’s a celebrity who is not only involved in the making, branding and design of his fragrances but will actually go into stores and stand there for 10 hours selling it and talking to people about it and what his inspiration was for it. He talked to me about every note that was in it and was obviously really enthusiastic about every element of the process. I saw him one day in Selfridges on a counter at 10am and he was still there at 8pm chatting up a storm with no dimming of his enthusiasm.
He has another coming out too! Can’t remember the name now.
I too think the comment was funny and honest.
Thanks for the link to the NY Times article. The slide show was fascinating to me, who had only known her from The September Issue.
Is it wrong that I just want the bottle..I love cats!
It’s a darned cute bottle.
I hope she isn’t depending on her name to sell it; I had no idea who she was. I thought Anna Someone was editor of Vogue?
She’s Robin to Anna’s Barman. 😉
Ah, gotcha!
Well I don’t think she is planning to compete with Elizabeth Taylor or anything, but she’s well known in fashion circles. Anna Wintour is the editor of Vogue, Grace Coddington was Vogue’s Creative Director, although now she is stepping back and will be “creative director at-large”. See:

She seems like a fun lady, and I wish her and her juice well.
ACK!!! Batman.
I kinda like the idea of being someone’s barman, hehe ????
I always want to try a new CdG although they have disappointed me quite a bit in the last few years. I do love that bottle!
I LOVE that bottle!
