During filming of the O. J. series, Mr. Murphy advised her not to seek out Ms. [Marcia] Clark so that she could arrive at a characterization on her own. But six episodes in, she got the green light. By then, she had already asked Ms. Clark, through a mutual acquaintance, what perfume she wore during the 1995 trial (Lancôme’s Magie Noire), then scoured eBay for a vintage specimen and wore it on set, despite its “fecund earthy dirt scent.” (Ms. Clark now wears Acqua di Gio and “smells much better,” Ms. Paulson added.)
— Actress Sarah Paulson, who normally wears Le Labo Musc 25, tried out the scent of Marcia Clark while filming The People v. O.J. Simpson. Read more at Sarah Paulson Opens Up About Acting, Marcia Clark and Dating Older Women at The New York Times. (found via @alyssaharad at twitter)
I know it’s all a matter of taste, and her taste runs to clean white Musc 25, but I refuse to believe that Acqua di Gio smells better than vintage Magie Noire.
Ha, no kidding.
Its interesting that she took her role so seriously. I can see her totally slipping into her character once her “Marcia” makeup and clothing were in place, then a spritz of Magie Noire. Total transformation.
Sarah Paulson is a great actress, and I am enjoying watching her in The People Vs. O J Simpson.
I have not yet seen it, but saving the episodes on Tivo until I get the whole season. Glad to hear it’s worth watching.
Poor Ms. Clark. Still being criticIzed and judged for her tastes rather than being evaluated as a prosecutor.
Ms. Clark, if by some chance you read this column, please note that Magic Noire is considered a classic scent.
🙂
I didn’t look at it as criticizing her. I looked at it as she was getting into her part.
I’d say the same thing if someone was playing Greta Garbo getting into her “Greta” makeup and clothes and spritzing on something from her era. Or an actress portraying Marie Antoinette wearing something from that period and using a perfume from her era.
I do agree that vintage Magie Noire smells better than Acqu di Gio.
