Happy Christmas Eve Eve, aka, last day to make a desperate order from Amazon, aka Chet Baker's birthday. I have family arriving for the holidays today, so posting will be light through the end of the week.
I'm wearing Jour d'Hermès.
Reminder: this coming Friday we will not have a community project. But on Monday 12/28, we'll do a special Monday project...we'll be posting our annual Best of 2015 list, so wear one of your own Best of 2015 fragrances.
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
Note: the Slim d'Hermès Koma Kurabe watch features a design on porcelain by artist Buzan Fukushima. Twelve were made (each a different design). Ask Santa, maybe he'll bring you one.
In Journey Woman today.
I feel like it’s not working for me. Strange.
Everyone that is celebrating Christmas Eve tomorrow have a good one- and if you live in the Northeast, well we can break out our bikinis ????
The weather is too weird! I have not felt like wearing any of my winter perfumes yet. I’m going to try pretending that the dense fog white-out outside my window (in the DC area) is snow. 😉
I am in the New York City area, it is also foggy and supposed to be rainy. But this up-and-down and temperature it’s just not making my cold go away. One minute windows are open, next minute I’m bundled up in my winter jacket
I may have to scrub journey woman off just not working with me today’
Don’t you hate that? I’ve put on a thoroughly beloved scent and discovered that it is just WRONG somehow (the weather, my mood, the day of the week, SOMETHING) and has to be scrubbed off and covered up by something more appropriate.
Yes..trying to figure out what to put on next!
Since its such a pricey bottle I feel like I have just wasted a lot 🙁
It’s hard to figure out what to wear in this weird weather!
Oh, I hate it when that happens. Maybe trying setting it aside for a while and return to it in different weather/mood/etc.? I’ve had things I worried were a mistake come back around under different conditions, so I’m hoping it may yet work out for you!
Oh definitely. It’s getting warmer out!
We’ve got fog in the ‘burbs outside of Philly as well.
Happy Xmas Eve – Eve!
Foggy and rainy in Chicago, as well. Blah.
Foggy here in Montreal too, and they are predicting 17c for Friday! Break out the shorts (except it’s also supposed to rain). I put on Wazamba this morning but it didn’t feel quite right so I’ve switched to Nuit d’Amour. Much better. Can’t wear my heavy incenses in this weather.
Expected temps on Christmas Day- 88 degrees Fahrenheit. ????
Reading this article in the Washington Post this morning made me wonder if the same is true of perfume. Obviously, analyzing gender-based cost differentials would be complicated by the emergence of unisex perfumes, but one could do a simple analysis by comparing the women’s and men’s sections of Sephora.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2015/12/22/women-really-do-pay-more-for-razors-and-almost-everything-else/?tid=hybrid_experimentrandom_3_na
I’ve noticed for decades that the women’s version of a scent is nearly always higher in price than the men’s version: you’ll sometimes see two different sizes (say, 50 mL for the women’s, 75 for the men’s, or 100 and 125) at the same price, if not again less for the men’s.
The actual cost of the stuff inside the bottle is very small, and even if the men’s version is EDT and the women’s EDP, that wouldn’t account for the big difference in price. Maybe women don’t generally notice these differences (I doubt that), maybe they’re used to paying higher prices, maybe the women’s version has a higher perceived value: but however you slice it, there’s a tax on the X chromosome.
Otherwise known as the ‘pink tax’.
Drycleaning, soap (supermarket soap) razors, tampons and pads, underwear- all more for women, with women making LESS money overall.
Many times a unisex or ‘men’ scent will be lower in cost- you can sometimes get a whopping 3-4 OUNCES of a men’s scent for the cost of 1.7 ounces of a women’s scent.
Which is why I buy men’s stuff when I can. But for somethings it just won’t work. Hairdresser is another favorite.
Back when I didn’t have my regular stylist I would go into a salon and say “I’d like the men’s haircut please.” It was usually $20 or $30 less than a women’s cut. I’m pleased now that I still have hair to style compared to the men my age!
Off the top of my head, Amouage and MFK both charge more for their women’s fragrances than for the men’s. The beauty tax is alive and well!
Yup, I’ve noticed the price differential. Strange when you consider the fact that there are more women’s fragrances than men’s on the market, so there is much more competition.
Sampling DSH Amouse Bouche. The more fragrances of hers I sample, the more I appreciate her range and skill. Today I smell like a delicate pastry and am starting to get a little hungry
I get a lot of strawberry from AB.
Ooh. Like actual strawberry? I would go in a heartbeat for a scent that reminds me of berry fields in the middle of June . . .
Have you tried Hildi Soliani’s Fraagola Salaaata? Very spendy but gorgeous IMO.
Haven’t heard of this perfumer at all! Looks like Luckyscent is my only potential provider. How would you describe it?
Salted strawberry gorgeousness! It’s not very complex. I’m not a huge fan of strawberry as a note but I love this! I would love a bottle but won’t let myself spend so much for this type of scent. It sits on my wish list and mocs me right along with Tihota. I haven’t tried any of her other scents.
Salted strawberry sounds fascinating! Although I usually like my scents to be pretty big and complex, so perhaps I will “luck out” and not love it? Unfortunately, being a bit expensive hasn’t yet proved to be much of a deterrent to my perfume selections.
I haven’t tested it extensively. As you said Luckyscent is the only vendor who carries it and their samples are dabbers. I’m not sure if STC has it.
I was one of the lucky winners of a prize in Andy Tauer’s Advent draw, and yesterday I got an Explorer Set of 3 15-mL sprays, one of which is Une Rose de Kandahar*. It’s GLORIOUS, a masculine-leaning tobacco rose, heavy on the tobacco, with a rosy vanilla-soaked Turkish delight hovering just underneath. I can’t say after one wearing if it’s my favourite Tauer ever, but it’s already up there.
* The other two I chose were Une Rose Vermeille and L’Air du Desert Marocain.
Lucky!!! I’ve been entering every day with no luck so far. Congrats!
Congrats! Free perfume is always special. 🙂
I purchased a Discovery Set January 2014 when I didn’t win any advent draws and fell in love with PHI Une Rose, too – I’ve a bottle now. Congrats on your win and nice picks.
YAY! I won one of those in last year’s draw, and it is such fun to have those 15mL bottles to play with! You picked two of my fave Tauer’s, too! PHI really is unlike anything else, and I have found the LdDM to be very versitile and always so pretty.
Nice! Good for you 🙂 (And gooood choices!)
PHI is one of a kind and worthy of all the praise given it.
Excellent choices! Lucky you!
Congrats!!!! I loved it instantly
Top choice top love of the year
Am in JM orris and sandalwood day 5
Congrats! PHI is one of my Top 5, Holy Grail, “I Want to Smell Like This When I Die” scents! Wear them all in good health ????
Excellent choices. Have fun wearing them!
I’m in vintage Vent Vert — it’s working nicely with the warm, sunny day we’re having.
We have warm but not sunny — jealous!
Last day or work before the holiday. Yay! Wearing Jubilation 25.
Second yay!
HUZZAH!
Yay to both – you smell great!
Jo Loves Pomelo today. Nicely tart, although I think I still prefer Pomelo Paradis. When are they going to find American distribution already??
I wonder too – I would love to try the Flower Shop one.
I have a sample of the Flower Shop one. I like it, but probably won’t buy the FB.
Luna, that bottom comment was supposed to be for you. Anyway, like Ari, I am anxiously awaiting for them to begin distribution in the U. S.
Yes, I think if it weren’t so difficult/expensive to obtain my feelings for it might be different.
I own a bottle of it and I adore it. It cost me an arm and a leg, so I don’t wear it as often as I would like. The Jo Loves line is nice.
You smell lovely – such a great scent
Ooh! Agree, would like to see this in the US. I’m dying to try the coriander one.
Hm maybe I will go put on some Costes for a coriander fix.
Today’s watch is almost as gorgeous as yesterday’s.
I braved the sweltering heat today (40C/104F) to head to Fremantle for some Christmas shopping. (I used to get it done by November once upon a time) I followed this stunning scent trail to a beautiful shop selling natural perfumes, body products, olis and incenses. Big apothecary jars with frankincense, myrrhe, and other resins and powders such as sandalwood from all over the world, and all types of censers. And the perfumes were beautiful. I bought my sister and I each a censer and a couple of types of frankincense, and I bought myself a perfume called Chocolat Fougere. It’s green and herbal with a faintly sweet chocolate patchouli drydown. Lovely. The perfumer also runs courses so I’ll be signing myself up for one in January for my birthday I think.
That shop sounds like a beautiful treat just to visit! A perfume course is a great idea.
Wow! Your shopping trip sounds great! Almost makes me wish I had some shopping to do. 😉
It’s a wonderful experience to follow one’s nose!
Oooh, Perthgirl! That sounds like a destination for me! It always annoys me that it’s a nine hour flight to Western Australia, when for just another three hours of flying effort, I can get to the States, but that apothecary’ shop sounds wonderful and it’s singing a siren song to me. Hey, take care in the heat. My sister says her dogs are lined up by the door every morning st 6.30. They,re allowed inside into the air-con when the outside temperature hits 35, which it has been most days. She’s in Port Pirie in SA, which I think may be even hotter and dryer than WA.
How fun! That chocolate scent sounds right up my ally.
Cannot fathom 104 degrees, however.
Wow! This sounds fabulous!
Jo Malone Nutmeg and Ginger in BUCKETING rain today. Iiiii’m dreaming of a wwwwwwet Christmaaaaaas ….
I will be singing that same tune as well
Ha! This had me almost spitting up tea. Just think, if it was….. 20 degrees cooler (maybe 30 degrees?) this would all be snow.
Exactly what my husband said at breakfast. Of course, his opinion was more like “Wow, we’re dodging a bullet with this one,” but his perspective is always How Hard It Is To Feed Cows In Snow.
LOL! I suppose I really should be happy not to have to put chains on my tires.
Now you know how Christmas is in Oregon every year. Enjoy!
Oh, I know – except for the years with freezing rain, right? I grew up in Seattle and moved to Oregon many moons ago, so I have the requisite webbed feet and mold behind the ears … but Marjorie Rose is right – this much rain all at once is far beyond what we ordinarily endure. My California-born-and-bred husband is beside himself with sunshine withdrawal.
Pity me! I’m a fourth generation PNWer who has been living in Florida for the last decade. Imagine coming home to the PNW in all this rain and (relative) cold (still the best place in the world though 🙂 ).
Can you believe the rain this year?! I’m a hardened Oregonian–bring on the 90 days without sunshine, I dare you!–but to have such heavy rainfalls for so many hours and days really is unusual. I keep peeking out to see if “our” drain is working or needs a declog. The streets get flooded so quickly.
Maybe we need to think about building an ark. 🙂
All I know is when I start seeing animals lining up in pairs, I’m gonna get nervous!
🙂
Have you seen the flood forecasts for the UK? Bizarre weather for this time of year/
In New England we didn’t get snow last year until mid January and then we had like five feet of snow until spring… It was horrible. I have pictures of the snow through windows in my office and it was almost up the top of the glass. It was like working in a cave. I hope it doesn’t do the same thing this year.
I am finally wearing Lyric – from the bottle that took 20 days to get to my house despite being shipped on the same coast and time zone.
It’s not too heavy so even though we’ve got a bit of warm weather coming for the holidays I think I’ll be wearing this consistently. I got the big bottle because that’s all they had and it was for a really good price. Lyric might be a signature scent for me in 2016.
I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday weekend – if you celebrate. I actually have a coworker who is a Jehovah Witness so he doesn’t celebrate anything and after saying, “Happy Holidays” to him at the company party I stopped and said: “Wait! No. HAPPY VACATION TIME!” (since we’ll be closed for a week).
Enjoy your new bottle! Lyric is sooo lovely.
Lol! I’m one of Jehovah’s Witnesses and trust me, we all love vacation time. I grew up celebrating Christmas and the peace of a day when everything just stops is a real gift.
I can only imagine it, but it sounds much more heavenly than Christmas has become. Have a lovely day.
Exactly. Holidays can be so horrendously stressful and less than peaceful at times.
Happy Lyric-ing today.
I’m so glad it finally arrived! You smell great.
Happy to hear you finally received your bottle. How lovely to find a possible signature scent for the new year. Enjoy!
YAY!!!!
So happy that you FINALLY got your bottle! Great news!
Lyric is beautiful and I am sure you smell like a goddess in it.
Happy Holidays or vacation or both!
You smell lovely twin – glad to hear you’ve got your bottle at long last. I think my sample might lead to a full bottle…
Love Lyric. I’m so glad that it arrived in time for the holidays. When you finally pull the trigger on an expensive scent, it’s very painful to be kept waiting for it. You smell great!
SOTD: Pour Homme (Bottega Veneta). Weird warm balmy weather again here in the Midwest.
We have weird warm rain.
In defiance of record breaking warm temps today, along with rain, fog and thunderstorms this afternoon – like much of the US, so weird – I am wearing Ambre Russe. With a t-shirt.
🙂
Mohur extrait today, with a little extra spritz of Bois d’Iris on one hand just because I couldn’t resist, but they actually play very well together. 🙂
OMG, I love that watch-face…It would go well with the Tam Dao I plan on wearing tomorrow…
That’s an interesting combo. I don’t dare attempt to layer Mohur E with anything else for fear of taking away from any of its beauty.
I’m wearing Estee Lauder Cinnabar today. I’m going to a Christmas lunch with some girlfriends today, and this is one is so Christmas-y. I love this time of the year, even if I’m slightly behind in my holiday preparations.
It IS Christmassy, isn’t it? Like a clove-studded orange pomander hanging from a tree, only sexy (that sounds weird but it’s still accurate). All the Cinnabar ads I’ve ever seen are overstuffed, overblown Chinoiserie: I don’t know why they never positioned it as a Christmas fragrance, the way they did Beautiful as a wedding scent.
Ooooh, clove and orange is my favorite winter scent. (The Diptyque Pomander candle is perfect for this.) Sounds like I need to add Cinnabnar to my to-sample list.
I wasn’t fond of Cinnabar years ago. I should try it now–sounds luscious.
I love Cinnabar, one of my first grown up scents that I remember adoring, my uncle who gifted me with it knew me very well. 🙂
Havana Vanille, although my bottle calls it Vanille absolument. Eitherway a beautiful not sweet vanilla.
I like that watch. I’m wearing L’Ombre Fauve today, for the last day of work until January 4.
Yay! Nice, long breaks are so good. Enjoy!
Funny, Santa tells me that he doesn’t have business dealings with Hermes? HA HA Guess I’ll stick with Timex! 🙂
Wearing Light Blue today….always office friendly and easy to wear. Today is typically one of our pharmacy’s busiest days, with patients going on pass, doctors trying to get outta here, and nurses stocking the med room with supplies. Bring it on!
Even Santa has his limits 🙂
Due to the unusual weather, I went with Moulin Rouge 1889 by HdP.
I’m not familiar with this one, but it has a great name. How would you describe it?
It has a strong powdery cosmetic vibe, which I love. It’s supposed to represent the dancer’s dressing room smells back stage.
Interesting! I suppose it’s more vulgar (in a good way!) than something like Misia? That one is a bit too well-behaved for me.
It is somewhat similar to Misia. I find Misia is more refined and also unisex. IMO, MR is very feminine. It’s one of those polarizing scents. A lot of people don’t care for it. I also have a decant of Lipstick Rose but I prefer MR to Misia and Lipstick Rose.
Also in Jour d’Hermes!
Going indoor rock climbing after work today so I wanted something light. Jour is also beautiful, which is appropriate for the last day of work this year.
Happy Holidays everybody!
It is beautiful. Happy holidays!
Sounds like fun! Enjoy your time and climb high!
Hey twin!
I’m wearing Acqua di Parma’s Essenza today for no particular reason except I realized I hadn’t worn it in ages.
Jour is a happy choice for the day. I almost bought my mom a Jour Absolu gift set for Christmas, since I’m pretty sure she would enjoy the scent. At the last minute I doubted myself and instead got her a travel set with Jour, Eau de Pamplemousse Rose, and the Toit and Monsieur Li jardins, with a note that I’ll buy a full bottle of her favorite for Mother’s Day. That should work!
My SOTD is no surprise – OJ Ta’if. Three sprays from the luxurious bottle was a treat this morning.
I’m happy today is my last day of work until Jan 4 (I work for a college that closes for winter break). Happy Christmas Eve Eve!
You smell great! Love Ta’if!
I’m not a huge OJ fan but I think that I need a sample of Ta’if. I am curious since you seem to love it so much.
For me Ta’if is the perfect dark rose, probably because it is not so very dark, more deep and luscious. I love the idea of something like Portrait of a Lady (so much that I bought a travel spray), but it’s usually too much when I try to wear it.
If you are familiar with NV Mohur, for me the rich rose note is the same, especially at first spray. I’ve never smelled another rose like it, other than in Mohur. The overall composition of Ta’if is a bit lighter with very subtle dry fruit and spices. I’d be happy to send you a sample! You can reach me at brackett in the land of gmail.
Sounds lovely. I’ve tried Mohur EDP but not the extrait. I own several rose scents but not POL which would never fly where I work. Any similarity to PHI, Lyric or Rose Boheme?
I’m comparing Ta’if to Mohur EDP. I haven’t tried the extrait. On me Lyric was all vanilla pudding ylang-ylang, not rose. Strange. Andy Tauer roses have a tendency to go very sour on me. I haven’t tried Rose Boheme, but the description sounds fabulous.
Rose Boheme is a big balsamic rose, oud, tea, patch scent it’s a hippy rose. What I think is strange about it is the first time I tried it, all I could smell is barnyard oud and remember thinking that I’d love it without that note. I even gave away my sample. I tried it again recently and now I don’t smell the oud at all. Charna is a natural perfumer so perhaps the oud note has faded a bit, Thank Goodness! It is very pretty though.
I OD’d on Ta’if once (three sprays, but one of them was to the back of the neck) and wound up having to give my decant away. It may have been the date note, which is not particularly prominent, but that day it just smothered me.
In any case, I’m starting to wonder if Lyric W has been reformulated, because the rose is not dominant, but certainly the heart of my 2009 decant. Yes, there’s ylang in there, and lots of incense, but it’s A Rose.
According to a number of Kafka’s readers, Lyric had been refo’d.
Nice gift approach. I’m sure your mom will appreciate it.
I’m wearing my first SL today, Fille en Aiguilles. I don’t see it in the notes anywhere, but I smelled a lot of cedar at first. Now it’s settled, and I quite like it. I like the woodsy pine, and the incense, as well as something that smells a little cleaner to me, which I can’t quite identify.
It doesn’t suit the temperature outside, but it does suit the nasty, rainy mess of the weather right now. It’s my last day of work for the week, so I’m pretty content, despite the weather.
I tried FeA for the first time a few weeks ago. Based on the review by Kafkaesque, I expected to love it, but I’m not sure how I feel about it. I’m going to give it another go over the holidays.
It’s different, for sure. It’s now basically turned into a warm laundry smell on me. Which isn’t a complaint, exactly, but also isn’t necessarily what I’m looking for in a perfume.
Now that I’m smelling the warm laundry smell a little longer, I actually like it. It makes me feel, and smell, like I just took all of my clothes out of the dryer.
It wouldn’t be Serge without the cedar. Seriously, does he put it in everything??
Yes, along with cumin… 🙂
And stewed fruit. . .
Makes me think of the Monty Python Lumberjack song…
Ha!
I always love a Python association!
I love that watch, but I know my sister would love it even more. If I had a bajillion dollars, I’d def pick it up for her. Instead, shower gel. Sorry!
Ambre Narguile for me today. I seem to forget I even have this, but today it seemed just the thing. It is just delicious!
You smell delicious!
Mmmm, you smell like an apple pie!
Wow! Another beautiful watch today. Been wanting a Rolex for a while now, so maybe Santa will make this year the one I get one. Another warm day in Texas, which makes it so hard to believe its Christmas time.
My SOTD is Dark Amber& Ginger Lily. Easily becoming one of my faves for the Fall/Winter season.
Wearing Youth Dew. What an astonishing surprise: It smells nothing like what I remembet, and even if it’s been reformulatef since the ’70s, that can’t account for rhe whole difference. My nose has grown up! I love this now and remember it smelling “too old” back then.
Karen,
I often wear the bath oil, it’s long lasting and very discreet. I like the way it develops vs. the spray which is way too much.
Thank you! Sounds like something I’d like–for 2016.
I remember not really liking this one growing up. Both of my grandmother’s and my mom wore it in the 80’s. I have noticed that several NST’ers have commented so positively on it. I am curious as to how different is the reformulated version from the original. Is the reformulated one that Tom Ford had a hand in? Now that my tastes in fragrances have matured since the 80’s, I’m wondering if this is one I should revisit.
wearing Chanel Beige today
That was my wedding scent.
It was a one time wear for me-beautiful for that day and moment but after that the bottle went to a grateful home.
Enjoy
now THAT is a perfect choice for a wedding scent!
A time keeping device on the wrist? How quaint!
Weirdly, am also wearing Jour d’Hermes. The grapefruit-y freshness is definitely needed for today. Last day of work before holiday break, and I have a ton to do- including sending out the last of the Christmas cards (all in Beaverton, so no worries) and hounding my apartment management to FINISH the work they begun in the unit.
Song of the Day: Christmas Wrappings
Isn’t it? There is a girl at my daughters’ daycare who always points and asks what my watch does when I pick them up. “Does it talk?” Nope!
I’ve just woken to a wonderful surprise– I find I have slep the sleep of the just for nearly six hours! Thst’s marvellous, and all but unprecedented in the last several years. I feel bouncy and energetic. Now I want to start the day, but no one’s awake! However, I have made myself a splendid cup of tea and have dabbed some fairly vintage Joy on my wrists, and I’m looking out at the quiet city streets thinking there are very many worse ways to start the day than this. Hope all your different days are as good as mine promises to be.
It’s funny how a good night’s rest is something that we take for granted until a certain age. Then it becomes priceless!
A dab of Joy on the wrists is a wonderful way to start the day! 🙂
Actually, just a little joy, lower case, full stop. I wish everyone could have some!
🙂
I know how you feel – I’ve suffered from insomnia most of my life. About 10 years ago or so I went to bed and when I woke up it was light in my room. I was so confused and thought I must have left a light on. However it was daylight! Maybe the first (and last) time I slept through the night.
I’ll bet vintage Joy is wonderful. I have a recent bottle of the EDT and enjoy it very much.
I have the recent one as well and I like it very much. The almost-vintage that I have is the EdT, and it’s the colour of good cognac. It’s not as airily floral as the modern version–it has a fairly thumping base that develops quite quickly on me. I don’t know enough to identify the dominant note, but if I had to answer a multi-choice quiz about it, my pick would be civet. i love it, though florals are not utterly my thing at the moment. Still deep in my affair with gourmands….I need more!
Good morning Waterdragon and merry almost Christmas. And merry summer holidays! I’m in the living room, having slept on the couch ( my mum is staying and she gets the bed ) with two dogs …madness. Drinking my first coffee in a quiet house, listening to the sparrows and sniffing the soft remnants of Skive. I thought I might have seen you on TV at a graduation ceremony for a student beginning the ‘ walk’ of life.
May many of your perfume dreams come true this year.xx
You probably did see me. I didn’t watch the news, but my husband did, and told me that my ugly mug was up quite a lot because of where I was sitting on the stage. I hope I was looking suitably attentive and indulgent– it’s nerve-wracking to think that my real thoughts might have been showing! Eeeeek! I meant to hide away in the second row, but the dean instructed me to sit in the front. If I’d known John’s speech was going to go viral, I damn well would have ignored her!
It was the red gown that gave you away. You looked smart and intelligent and engaged …. More porcelain fine teacup than ugly mug.
You smell great. Enjoy the bouncing!
Wearing Incense Rose to head in to work and give the smells of a shelter a run for the money. Monday I went shopping for stocking stuffers right after work, and didn’t realize that my rain jacket had been smeared with a bit of dog poo when a dog had jumped up on me earlier. It’s funny how you get used to the smell, and I was in a rush to get out, but as I was shopping I suddenly realized I was reeking, and saw crowds of shoppers parting for me, and looked down to find the damage. Oops! But hey, it did make the shopping faster. And it should, in comparison, make even the most perfume-phobic more appreciative of the smell of a proper scent.
🙂
Lol! All ‘ s well that ends well, then.
Lol! That’s funny!
No SOTD this morning–I have an appointment at the allergist/ imunologist’s, and they don’t like us coming in scented. 🙁
As for watches, I can safely suggest that my new running watch (had it just over a month now) must certainly be the best-smelling one out there! When I take a whiff of the wristband I get a mix of Beloved and something darker–maybe Tolu?
*immunologist’s
Yes, you must have the best smelling watchband in the world! I sampled Beloved for the first time last weekend, while home in my pajamas, and the scent of my robe the next day was heavenly.
I *might* be liking the scent of Beloved better as a leftover on fabrics than on my skin. I am finding it very pretty in any case, but especially nice as a remnant.
Beloved is a FB buy for me next year. A friend’s son is visiting from Onan, and he has kindly volunteered to be my mule. From the sheik’s shop to my shelves: what fun! And, as a bonus, this is one perfume that the dear man loves….Eggzellent!
Very interesting watch.. something to look at for a long time.. haha
SOTD for me is Nuxe body oil, something my husband says smells like basketballs. Whatever.
Enjoying sleeping in, reading, napping and baking cookies! Lovely staycation..
Hope to go out for a walk later, although the weather is kind of depressing. Joining some friends this evening to sing carols at a local nursing home. Hope to bring some smiles and joy to the elderly..
Cheers!
Smells like basketballs!
I think my Mr. Spicebomb would like that! 🙂
I’ve never heard that one before… Men..
Basketballs? Ha. Glad to hear my husband’s not the only one who comes up with the most random perfume comments.
I’m sure he meant basketballs in a good way. 🙂
Sometimes the male of the species does associate things oddly. I was wearing a floral last year, and the dear one sniffed and said, “You smell like a flower heaven.” I was all pleased and thanked him, only to discover from the subsequent conversation that he meant I smelt of dead flowers. He hated it. When we were young and I was still inclined to take a snit, he once said to me, “Your hair smells like new-mown hay–before it’s been through a horse.” !!!
🙂
Quite the romantic 😉
Basketballs, huh? I just went to spray some on (just realized I had a whole bottle of this and never even used it). I guess I can kind of see that – depending on one’s body chemistry and climate. I just get a light, sweet-almondy scent from it.
Wearing a combination of L’ Artisan’s Voleur de Rose and Al aoudh. Earthy rose with a hefty dose of cumin.
I’m headed out to downtown SF to meet up with a friend, hope this will give me a bit of peace in the craziness. 🙂
Lyric again today. Feels just perfect and so glad to be having a few days off.
Started the day in Bois d’Argent hoping for a peaceful day, but not so far. I feel No. 19 calling.
And that comment about vintage Vent Vert made me think I might need to hunt down a sample.
Wishing all a peaceful approach to the holidays. Enjoy.
SotD = A Kiss by the Fireside – 4160 Tuesdays from a sample shared by a wonderful NSTer. I should have worn it yesterday, but it is great for a foggy Wednesday. I enjoy aromatic fragrances, and I think I like this one quite a lot.
I love the Hermes watches, a reminder that a wristwatch can be a timepiece or jewelry or art or all three.
For a brief moment a few days ago I considered buying a new watch (not Hermes, oh darn) when the battery on my old watch needed to be replaced. At the moment it seemed easier (one-click-ordering-with-two-day-free-shipping) to buy a new watch than to go to the watch shop for a new battery. I’ve tried in the past to open the case of my watch but I can’t do it!
So I’ve not worn a watch for a few days and feel like it’s fine. There are clocks all around me. Laziness wins out over consumerism.
I’ve decided not to go chasing after the last few things on my holiday list. Everything can wait. Anyone care to join me in my no-buy pledge? My motto is “No More Clicks!” until the new year. Someone in a warehouse/packing sorting facility/delivery vehicle somewhere will thank us for our self-restraint. 🙂
The deals will be even better post-xmas and new year anyway 😉
I put on some L’Antichambre Le Speculoos for a nice spicy cookie kind of smell. It feels right for the season.
Yum. I find that Dries Van Noten par Frederic Malle smells just like speculoos. If you’re familiar with it, do you find the two perfumes similar?
love Dries Van Noten! I agree, it’s a delicious scent–but without being cloying.
Back home after three days in the big smoke (Christchurch…ha ha) testing perfumes in the department store ( nothing too exciting ). Arrived home to Canoe Skive. The leather roll it comes in is so beautiful. I was surprised by how boozy the scent is as I was expecting something far more dry and wood smoke. Instead it’s Whisky barrel and peat. Interesting…and I like it a lot. Lovely hand written note from Natalie included…very special.
Sat out on the deck with a glass of champagne eating fresh cherries and strawberries, looking at the green fields and sheep on the opposite hill.
The best thing about ChCh were the lime (linden) trees in full bloom. Such a sweet scent and it always signals Christmas. I remember when I lived in Germany I would get thrown every time I caught the scent of lime …as I would immediately think Christmas and yet it would be June.
Merry Christmas everyone and thanks Robin for a fantastic year of posts. You’re a star!
It sounds so exotic, drinking Champagne and watching the sheep with the linden trees blooming at Christmas time…I would love to visit New Zealand someday! Thanks for the glimpse of life on the other side of the world from me…
If you ever come Downunder, I will take you to my home, Te Tai Tokerau — Northland, and you will feel the pressures of modern life fall away. Northland is a split personality: the east coast is all little bays of golden sand where the pohutukawa drip into soft seas and the sky is an endless, empty blue; the west coast is darker and wilder — long, straight beaches, grey surf separated from a restless grey sky by a silver line of light drawn along the horizon. My home is not as magnificent as where Kanuka lives, but it has its own magic.
Oh, what a generous offer. I will tell adorable hubby we definitely need to visit friends in New Zealand…not sure I can actually get him to sit on a plane for that long, however!
You would be so welcome!
That sounds beautiful.. I’ve never been to NZ but I’ve wanted to see it.
Sweetgrass, this country is beautiful, and we would welcome you!
Sounds wonderful! And makes me want to see more of the beauty that is out there in other parts of the world.
A-NZ is greener than Australia, smaller, more encompassable, but visitors from the UK have described it to me as “dark and slightly creepy”. Obviously, I don’t find it so, but some day I hope you can judge for yourself.
CSP Vanille Mokha for this rainy chilly day. San Diego weather has been so weird this year. Crazy hot while the rest of the country is freezing, and now cold and rain, while the rest of the country is warm! We’ll take it – we sure do need the rain and it makes it slightly more Christmassy when it’s chilly.
The sun was out for about 10 minutes earlier today after more than three weeks of daily rain. It does make one appreciate sunshine when it’s been gone for so long. Today I’m wearing Tihota, which struck me as suitably holiday-ish after a visit to the dentist, which was pain-free for once. All that flossing paid off!
you smell great!
I was just listening to Chet Baker over this past weekend as I was in a flurry of baking for the holidays. Happy Birthday Chet!
I’m nekkid today. Completely in a rush this am and no desk to hide away a sample or two. I will have to live vicariously through all the wonderful smelling NSTer’s.
Happy Holidays to all you fragrant folks ✌????️
I am planning an hour of Chet Baker Sings later today 🙂
Nice! And will you be in a holiday baking frenzy, too?
I think that I may have chosen poorly; today’s SOTD is Orto Parisi Stercus, which I actually quite like. It just isn’t really mixing well with the rain and almost headache I have today. A little caffeine may help!
Hope your head is better soon, headaches are the worst thing on a rainy day.
Stercus is quite a name! 🙂
It sounds like it could be the name of a cheese.
Thanks!! I did wind up shaking the headache, thank goodness! Stercus is an odd one; it’s supposed to smell, well, frankly, fecal? I’ll admit, it sounded super gross me and I was initially afraid to try it, but it’s really quite good. I am not very eloquent when describing perfume, so I will let someone else:

Continuing the Yuletide theme, I am in Winter Delice. It still smells like cranberries to be although I believe everyone else thinks it is a pine scent of some sort. it must be the little red berries on the little box…
I couldn’t find my Nuit de Noel; I must have stored it away somewhere because I never wear it.
Instead I am in Organza Indecence and pleased as punch. Getting lots done; reeeeeally looking forward to the work holiday. (We are closed all next week, so wheeee!) I can’t wait to, as one of my students said, watch TV all day as if it’s my *job*.
That’s so nice – OI *and* a holiday.
SOTD = Chanel 28 La Pausa aka 8-spray La Pausa, the magic number of sprays to make this perfume last all day on me. I feel elegant and sophisticated, as if I have an updo, and I’m wearing diamond-studded drop earrings and a sequined gown. POOF!!! I’m actually at work, last day before vacation.
Giving new meaning to the phrase, “Dress up for work!”
Elegant, sophisticated and delicious-smelling as well! I love 8-spray! It may be my next Exclusif, I think.
I’m a little slow in answering an above question on how FM Dries Van Noten compares to Le Speculoos. I haven’t sniffed the Dries Van Noten, but I think I probably should. It sounds good to me. Sorry I couldn’t compare!
Daughter-home-from-college picked my SOTD: YSL Paris. Pretty.
Leaving for an “Eve of the Eve” Christmas service – have to go early for music practice – in about half an hour, but I’ve been enjoying everyone’s SOTD reports.
Out walking today, I stopped in at Colonial Drug. They have done wonderful things with that store since they have moved from Harvard Square. They have all the good stuff there for sure and are fully stocked for the holiday season. I bought a couple more soaps: Roger & Gallet carnation for spicy floral and a small cake of Porto Iris Lavender soap for creamy floral as well as a Japanese forged steel nail clipper in it’s own little leather case. They have all the really good old time European bath and grooming supplies as well as perfume classics. They even had a bottle of Piguet Casbah that I sprayed on one hand and Parfum Sacre EDP sprayed on the other. I’ve heard that the PS extrait is very expensive so I’m thinking of just buying a bottle of the latest formulation EDP. It’s actually very good. It’s only about a 10 minute walk from my house so I think I’m in big, big trouble.
Since it’s 80 degrees outside today, I’m wearing Sikkim Girls.
My laptop has been giving me a scare lately, enough that I thought I might have to buy myself a new one for Christmas. I mean, it’s about 5 years old and was cheap to begin with, so I have been wanting to upgrade. I just wasn’t planning to do it right now. I reset it and reinstalled Windows 10, though, and things seem to have calmed down. So I’m hoping it will stay that way for a little while. Ah technology…
Also, if I were entirely composed of money and actually wore watches, I would totally want one of those Hermes watches. That’s gorgeous.
How are you enjoying this weather, Sweetgrass?
I’m so over it. Houston weather is the pits!
I hear ya.. we have enough 80+ degree weather here, we don’t need it at Christmas too. Now if it were 80 during the summer when it would normally be like 100 or something, then I’d be good with that. 🙂
Wearing Body Kouros YSL for the Annick Menardo community project – oh, 2 or 3 weeks late.
Heads up hajusuuri !! I thought of you when I sprayed it, Bulgari Black with a subtle black licorice note and lots of powdery benzoin and vanilla.
Ms. Menardo composed BK, BB, and LL au Masculin; there is a familial similarity.
I’m sure you could find Body Kouros inexpensively in the fragrance district of NYC. Just make sure to get the bottle with the odd narrow for its body base. I have the original formula and have not smelled the newer bottled formula. The new bottle has a base flush with its body.
Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night !!! 🙂
Ooh you make this one sound so tempting. Also I am too much an AM fan.
Hello jjlook !!
Do try it, I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
🙂
You enabler you! Aaaaargh, you know me so well!
Enjoy hajusuuri !!
I’m happy to enable a fellow enabler . 🙂
Hmm.. I’ve never tried body Kouros, but your description is making it sound rather tempting, especially since I swapped away my bottle of Bulgari Black and sometimes wish I’d at least thought to keep a decant for myself.
