Men care more about packaging in fragrance and grooming products than women. Especially when we’re talking about something that can easily skew feminine in the minds of some guys, presentation is critical.
— Brian Boye of Men’s Health magazine, quoted in The New Men’s Fragrances, Aggressively Packaged, at The New York Times.
I like the example bottles they used; very appealing indeed. But Mr Boyd seems to say that a) most men are insecure at the fragrance counter, and b) a manly-looking bottle is the deciding factor in the fragrance purchase. I wonder to what extent that is true.
I wonder too. My guess is that women care far more about packaging than men, but who knows?
Also historically true that women purchase a huge percentage of men’s fragrances, although also wonder if that percentage is going down and men are doing more of their own shopping these days.
To me packaging IS critical. I am able to purchase a scent for its beautiful bottle even though the juice itself leaves a lot to be desired (e.g. latest from Trussardi Blue Land), and, conversely, even if a fragrance is tempting but the flask is an eyesore I’d rather pass. My recent fascination: Acqua di Gio Profumo – the black bottle looks stunning and soo quality!
Interesting, thanks!
