Indie line Dawn Spencer Hurwitz has launched Matsu, a new fragrance:
“Pine Tree” in Japanese, Matsu, is the scent of lush forest air, cool, green and refreshing. It has that kind of simplified Japanese aesthetic that feels like not too much but just enough. That is how Matsu is meant to feel: fresh and lively but never over powering or overly complicated. It is just right.
A refreshing bergamot citrus to green wood scent with lush leafy green nuances and a touch of humidity.
Dawn Spencer Hurwitz Matsu is available in 1 dram, 10 and 30 ml Eau de Parfum; samples are also available.

OJ Woman has forever convinced me to at least *try* any scent with a piney/ resinous wood note, but in my mind, this one smells more masculine. Of course, one never can tell from a list of notes!
This one really sounds lovely, maybe from the sound of it, not as dark or heavy as the OJ? I wouldn’t think of OJ Woman as having a Japanese aesthetic.
No, I agree that this is unlikely to have much in common with OJ Woman. Just an association I have with pine notes–for good or ill.
Japanese aesthetic makes me think sheer and sort of clean without being laundry-soap musky–like Kenzo Amour. I assume that’s a fair assumption?
I don’t know…it always makes me thing of CdG Kyoto or something like that…spare, not as sweet as Amour. But we’re both guessing!
For a moment there I was so excited. Friends just had a baby girl, named Matsu. And I have promised her, the baby, that I will be her guide in perfumes the minutes she is old enough to press a spray top. So I thought, what better way to seal this promise than with a gift of perfume called Matsu… But Matsu, the baby, is named after the Chinese sea goddess… Not a Pine Tree…. Goodness. Pine Tree perfume. Tsk. Tsk. (Yes. I read the notes… I know.)
Hey. At least smell it, right?
Grumble grumble 🙂
Having lived in Japan for some time, I’m really looking forward to trying this!
