Moonshine A Gentleman’s Cologne ~ new fragrance

Posted by Robin on 2 May 2012 35 Comments

Moonshine A Gentleman's Cologne

Indie line Moonshine has launched their debut fragrance, Moonshine, A Gentleman's Cologne:

In a world where fame and power seem to dominate the mainstream, it's time to get back to our roots.

MOONSHINE, a gentleman's cologne, is designed for men comfortable in their own skin - those who don't need to be associated with the latest trend or fad.

A classic and timeless scent that embodies a lifestyle of strong history and heritage.

Independent. Courageous. Rebellious.

A woodsy aroma with hints of spice: including notes of black pepper, tobacco, leather, gin, and patchouli.

Be bold - Bask in the MOONSHINE.

Moonshine A Gentleman's Cologne can be found now at Indiescents, $72 for 100 ml Eau de Toilette.

Now I am interested. The bottle looks so simple and elegant at the same time. I also like the name! Would love to put my hands on it.

Being realistic, there’s almost not a chance that this will land in Poland. But I still have hope!

Replace gin note for rum / whiskey / burbon.
        Love dark boozy alcoholic notes,

My husband would LOVE this (former bartender and current hooch aficionado). He got all excited about the John Varvatos Vintage bottle because it looks like a hip flask.

Anyone else find the name a little odd for a male scent??? It makes me think of a really foppish dandy!

Moonshine is the traditional name for a high alcohol brewed spirit (I believe from corn) made in the rural southestern U.S. (Note the bottle looks vaguely like a hip flask)
Traditionally “moonshine” was brewed “illegally” by small distillars who were hostile to Prohibition and excise taxes imposed on liquor. . Now a legal, “artisan” Moonshine is developing.
Nonetheless, to me a Moonshine man would be more a “good ole boy” than a gentleman and more overalls than a dandy..

The term is also known in Ireland, along with the native “poteen”:

            The substance is universal:

The apple-based version made in Brittany is called “lambig”, from “alembic”.

Hey, where I live ‘moonshine’ is the magical substance that comes out from behind the clouds when the elves party it up in the enchanted woods…

And I aint gonna let nobody take that away from me. *burp*.

I don’t think of a gentleman either when I hear moonshine. My uncle was from West Virginia and he had a still and he most certainly was not what you’d think of as a gentleman. Well at least appearance wise. He was a great guy but more of the jeans, flannel, and Budwiser type. But I do love the name and if it’s got a gin note count me in on that.

It’s still brewed illegally in parts of the South and Southeast; I live in an area that still sees the occasional arrests over illegal stills. Then again, some counties around me are still dry counties (no liquor or liquor sales allowed), and other municipalities are still debating liquor-by-the-drink sales… and fun fact, in Tennessee (where I live) you can’t sell wine or spirits in grocery stores, only beer and beer-based coolers. There’s been legislative attempts on and off the past few years to make wine in grocery stores legal, but said laws never get anywhere in the legislature 🙁

Forgot to mention: Illegal moonshine’s dying out where I live, in part because those who know how to make it are passing on, in part because meth is well-entrenched in this area and it brings more profit than moonshine in a jar. 🙁

Gentleman is the last thing I would associate with Moonshine. The picture it conjured was a toothless hill-billy with dirty fingernails smelling of cigarettes, booze and day old food.

Don’t forget, there was a time in this country when the only booze a man could get was Moonshine. Therefore, any man wishing to get a buzz, gentlemanly or otherwise, would have to drink the ‘Shine. Just picture a smooth, pinstripe-wearing lad who will remove his fedora before he eats and holds the door for the ladies… and likes to get blitzed!
