San Francisco perfumer Yosh Han collaborated with Polish director Grzegor Jarzyna to create an unsettling blood-like scent to be pumped into the theater throughout the premiere of his avant-garde production of "Nosferatu" in Warsaw next month. Working with a lab in Italy, Han found just the right "revolting and radical" formula for the task - a combination of blood orange, patchouli, sandalwood, smoke and leather.
— From The iS List: Bloody Fabulous, a short piece on blood in perfume from the San Francisco Chronicle. Hat tip to Emily!
Somehow, that list of notes sounds neither revolting not radical. All of those are conventional perfume notes.
True, but you can’t tell much from a list of notes….would not be at all surprised you could combine those in a revolting way by overdosing smoke, patch & animalic notes.
I dont think of any of those things when i smell blood. Where is the metallic note?
I haven’t smelled it so could not say.
I wondered just how “revolting and radical” one could get with surround-smell enhancements before movie audiences got up and left. I’m not sure whether the smell lasts for the whole film, but it seems like you wouldn’t want to make audiences *too* uncomfortable, which would necessarily limit the edginess of the aroma.
Totally agree…hope it is faint at most. Would also think it would be problematic for people w/ allergies or asthma, so hope they tell people in advance!
I hope they warn people before they buy tickets. I wouldn’t go to anything that promises “revolting and radical” smell during the course.
