Indie brand Dawn Spencer Hurwitz has launched Pandora, a new fragrance for women:
The "Beautiful Evil" is a quote from the story of Pandora as told by the Greek, Hesiod. She is the all gifted, all giving one, a singular woman and synonymous with Eve in many respects. It is she who opens humankind to the knowledge of good and evil and ultimately breaks the utopian ideal. With Pandora, mankind has plagues but also knowledge and maturity. She opens the door to truth and hope.
What began as an all-botanical design for a project changed direction with the addition of a subtle synthetic influence. It made all of the difference. This is also a perfume that also utilizes some new and exotic botanical materials...in Pandora, the ancient meets the 21 century.
The notes feature ruby fruits, bergamot, aldehyde, spices, ozone, violet leaf, davana, cassis bud, green and pink pepper, rose de mai, juhi jasmine, linden blossom, yerba maté, cabreuva wood, orris, green tea, mousse de saxe accord, cyperus, fossilized amber absolute, ambergris, patchouli, vetiver, muhuhu, sandalwood, tonka bean, oakmoss and vanilla.
Dawn Spencer Hurwitz Pandora is available in 15 ml Parfum (shown, $220), 4 or 10 ml Eau de Parfum ($25/60).

*Must* sample this. And that bottle is so lovely it makes me feel faint.
It is pretty, agree!
Ditto on both counts. That bottle is stunning, right down to the color of the juice!
What a stunning bottle. I think that DSH will come back from that nasty bit of business with the Natural Perfumer’s Guild bigger and better than ever. I also like her interpretation of Pandora! I usually hear the story told as “why did that stupid skank have to open the damn box”.
🙂
Sounds like a very promising perfume. I love the oakmoss and vanilla base notes.
It does sound really nice.
What an intriguing list of notes. I really want to smell this one.
I’ve been eyeing it ever since its release & I already love DSH’s Reinette. Also, I cannot resist the temptation of a gorgeous sounding fragrance inspired by Greek mythology. I love her take on Pandora.
Yeah, definitely making a purchase. If by some unlikely chance I hate it, I’m sure someone here would take it off my hands.
OMG, Mousse de Saxe accord and oakmoss? I am hoping it smells a little like what the Carons used to smell like.
I am warning y’all right now, DO NOT get in between me and the Place Order button for this one.
Everybody get out of JF’s way… we don’t want to come between her and The Gorgeousity…
The list of notes sound luxurious!
As a self-professed Bottle Tart, I love it.
I’m a bit leery of the 700+ notes in it (joking). The first note of “ruby fruits” is bothersome. I don’t know what that is but it worries me it is too berry-like in the way that lots of new releases are.
I have not smelled it, but I am familiar with a lot of Dawn’s scents, and I’d bet the ranch that it will definitely NOT smell like the typical stupid Kool-aid berry accord.
What Mals said. 😉
🙂 hi Ikat~
The ruby red fruit note is not sweet… it’s not really juicy exactly. It’s maybe more like raspberry leaf tea with some blackberry nuances that imply fruit but doesn’t touch it. It’s also all botanical so it definitely doesn’t smell like plastic fruit weirdness.
Love the bottle. Love the name. I had a dog named Pandora.
‘fossilized amber absolute’? Amber, the fossilised kind, does not have any smell at all. This will confuse people who think that the amber mentioned in perfume compositions comes from what they wear around their necks and are always told that it doesn’t. Because it doesn’t.
I have seen that listed before in natural perfumes — no idea what it means.
hello, Bela and Robin~
Sorry I am weeks late on this thread… I have been nose to the grindstone working in my studio for weeks now. Anyway, the “fossilized amber absolute” is a new botanical material on the market sold at eden botanicals. I believe it is ‘fossilized’ (vintage) amber resin (not gemstone) that has been distilled. There is a Himalayan conifer that produces an “amber” resin and I suspect this oil is from very old specimens from this. Yes, I understand that this might cause confusion… I was just using the name of the material from the distiller. Anyway, that’s the back story of this note. (PS: it is a thick ambery sweet resin note with a definite smoke quality. I use it in a quite dilute form.)
Very helpful, thanks!
want!
mmmm. pretty. and that is a lot of notes!
I may just have to spring for a small bottle of this unsniffed. BTW, DSH is offering 15% off anything sitewide with code “extra15”, good through 09/30.
Tempting! As a fragrance called Pandora should be!
Thank you Robin, for the pleasure of being at Now Smell This! It’s always the greatest pleasure.
