A 10 minute clip from BBC 4's Perfume series, this one focusing on the development of Tommy Hilfiger Loud. It cuts off mid-sentence, unfortunately, but for those of us who aren't able to see the program, it's better than nothing.

Hope we can get access to the video of this show here in the US! Or maybe PBS will broadcast it?
As to Loud, has anyone tried it? I see Yann Vasnier in the video. He’s awesome. Looking online, I only see it available at discounters…not any of the dept stores!?
I’m hoping BBC America, maybe? We’ll see.
I could swear I saw them once & tried them on paper, but I honestly can’t be sure. I can’t imagine that they sold as well as EL/TH hoped, but too bad this clip cuts short before we find out (if that’s even mentioned, I don’t know).
The programme coverage stops after the first 10 days of UK sales. The English Estee Lauder rep is interviewed with a very fixed smile on her face saying how pleased they are with the sales but doesn’t reveal what the sales actually are. I assumed that if they had been good they would have. The part I found most curious about the process was that they stressed the importance of knowing about other brands and their performance and then said how rock and rose were such great partners. Was Rock ‘n’ Rose such a success? I haven’t smelled the perfume and am not a fan of rose, patchouli or lychee but I do love both Aurelien Guichard and Yann Vasnier as perfumers.
Thanks! I am guessing, just by the fact that they’re not in every store in the US, that they didn’t do so well. In fact, Tommy Hilfiger fragrances seem to get less counter space here than they used to.
(I think Rock ‘n Rose did ok but not gangbusters by any means)
Who is the cutie at the 2:50 mark? lol The part near the end where all the sales people are gathered in the store made me shudder and so glad I am out of retail! Nothing and no one could ever make me a cheerleader for a product I didn’t like. Tommy Hilfiger is evil in my book for bringing the whole “jean 3x too big and underwear hanging out” into the mainstream. 🙁
Aurelien Guichard!
That’s him!?! I always like his name but never knew what the chap looked like. My oh my! *fans self*
Yep. I assume with Yann Vasnier, although it was hard to tell since they didn’t really show his face. Two very talented men.
I have this channel but missed the listing for this but fortunately there is the BBC iPlayer, where you can catch up on the last 7 days of programming : http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0126vf0/Perfume_Something_Old_Something_New/
I think it works overseas- good luck and thanks for the tip!
Non UK residents can only use the iPlayer for radio programmes, not TV ones.
I was lucky enough to see the whole thing, my bf got a torrent of it, he says its quite easy, and we burned a copy for his mom, who is both English and lovely and my fragrance buddy.
I LOVE this doc, at times it is cringe worthy, at times just really interesting, even for someone who isn’t into perfume, like the BF. But wow, was I laughing out *Loud* to hear some of the nonsense they think up, how about the part where she is TELLING a girl of the age group of interest, what people her age are interested in. “They love music, music is everything to THEM, they are always with their ipods”. And the girl just kind of nods… HILARIOUS!!! She is probably just wondering to herself when this internship at the pr firm will start paying…
That Loud mess is beyond funny, and the search for patchouli plants? Which are not fragrant and look rather unglamorous and pathetic until dried, that was priceless. Reminds me of when i worked in fashion… “We must find the patchouli, we need to be resourceful for this!” and it appears like a sad little weed in a plastic cup. Amazing.
Downloading torrent files of copyrighted material (which that BBC prog certainly was) is illegal and you can be tracked while doing it. You might want to use a VPN to be on the safe side. I would keep quiet about it in any case.
Robin – thank you sooo much for posting this clip of the BBC4 Perfume documentary! I’ve been trying to get a glimpse of it, and these 10 few minutes did not disappoint! I do hope it becomes available for viewing in the US. We spent some time with Ian Denyer, the filmmaker, at the Esxence fragrance conference in Milan last year. He’s a very nice guy, and he seemed genuinely interested in the subject matter too. As for LOUD, I’ve got a little lab bottle of it somewhere. If I find it, I’ll post my impressions. Have a great 4th of July weekend!
It was released here in Sweden last fall/winter, and it was on sales in january. I’ve tried it, only on paper and only once, but I think it’s ok.
The problem is that it seems missunderstood. It’s not at all as young as the ads and bottle/name makes it seem. When you try it on, you expect maybe Paco Rabanne Black XS, but what you get is less sweet pink berries and more of a overripe peach/patch combo. A much more mature scent then expected.
“Better than nothing” LOL. I edited and posted that! And it was supposed to end like that – honest.
Naturally, I have the rest of it so I’ll try and make time to chop it into 10 minute chunks and post it to Youtube.
And don’t forget – there are two more episodes to go.
Hey, it wasn’t meant as a slur on you, honest! I’m glad I got to see even a little piece of the show, so thank you.
Just joking… I’ll get the rest of it on Youtube as there’s clearly a real enthusiasm to see this from outside the UK.
I just wanted to end that particular compilation on the line “we knew this was going to work for us” – because it didn’t!
aha! so it is you who got it uploaded on youtube!! thank you thank you thank you! smart move to chop it in four… as for anyone who followed my tip on Expat Shield Launch and had his/her PC act up as as result: my apologies… for me it did work, but it totally messed up my email etc..so i had it uninstalled..
I enjoyed the programme immensely – so many insights into the workings of the industry, and some surprisingly personal touches, like Thierry Wasser’s absent father issues, and the little girl being taken to No 68 to buy “her first perfume”, as though it were a rite of passage on a par with her first bra! My favourite clip was of Chandler Burr smelling a perfume he was sampling that he had sprayed on his knee, with the dead pan commentator saying solemnly: “There’s only so much Chandler Burr to go round.” Which chimes with my own motto of: “So many scents, so little skin”… : – )
All that’s missing here is Patsy and Edina.
