Lazy weekend poll ~ new experiences

Posted by Robin on 25 June 2011 245 Comments

BudapestBudapest

A simple game:

1. Name a place you've never been but you'd like to go on vacation.

2. Name a perfume you have never smelled, but that you think might be perfect for your trip.

Mine:

I'm off to Budapest with Frapin 1697.

MOS, I just checked out your blog; I especially enjoyed your MPG Route de Vetiver old and new post.

Every now and then rickbr and others mention interesting Brazilian fragrances from O Boticario and others. Hope you’ll try some and report back!

I took a peek, too. Very nice! It’s awesome that you were able to get the older MPG tester with the juice you fell in love with. I was rummaging around perfume dept. at Saks and found an old tester of Dioressence, at least couple of reformulations back, which had been stuck in the back of a drawer and then forgotten. It was about 85% full with a cap but no box and I had to pay regular price for it so it wasn’t exactly a fabulous Angela/Miss Kitty type find but I was really happy to get it.

Manguier Metisse by Huitieme Art. It just sounds so good that I kind of don’t care where I go, just somewhere vaguely compatible with mango and frangipani. (The only place I’m going any time soon is Vegas, so maybe I need to try this and see if I like it enough to buy for the trip…)

I think you’ll run into everything. I do like the Acca Kappa store (in the Venetian) for scented soaps. And there’s a Guerlain boutique, and every other swanky high end boutique. And a nice mall with a department store, can’t remember which, but it had a nice perfume department.

I’m terrible at describing. It reminds me a little of Lubin Idole –that boozy aspect. And some musky/tangy wood notes even a touch of cocoa …it’s different… tipping a bit more toward the masculine end of the spectrum than I usually favor.
You are right; it showed up then disappeared very quickly. But somethings generate a lot of buzz and others don’t.

The next city on my list is Barcelona. I’d need something that would harmonize with the mysterious layers of history of the Mediterranean coast (the name Barcelona is Phoenician in origin) and the original beauty of Gaudí. I’d take whatever comes out next from either Duchaufour or Sandrine Videault.

Robin, I also love your choice of Budapest and Frapin 1697 – that would be perfect for early fall!

Oh – Barcelona! You must watch the movie “Biutiful” w/ Javier Barden, and then to cheer yourself up afterward, watch “Vicki Christina Barcelona”… also with Mr. Bardem. Barcelona is an amazing background for each of these very different movies. My husband and I talk about going there someday…

At the risk of being too obvious…Grasse. I dream of Paris too, but I think Grasse might be more my speed and my speed these days is a bit slow. I’d wear vintage Guerlain Apres L’Ondee, because of all places I *should* be able to find some there. While I’m dreaming…I would also wake up tomorrow magically knowing how to speak French.

Madeira, Portugal or Barcelona – I just can’t decide. And while Morocco would be the obvious choice for this, I’d bring Ava Luxe Moroccan Mint Tea. Sounds like it would be perfect and refreshing for traveling.

You’ve got a point, odonata. I would tend to mentally associate incense or leather with Morocco (like Tauer’s L’Air du Desert Marocain or various SLs), but travel often needs light and refreshing.

That’s an interesting point. Liquids evaporate faster at higher elevations. I would expect that the change in evaporation rates would affect the balance of the notes. Also, since there are far fewer living organisms at such high altitudes (no trees, for example), I would think there would be fewer natural smells in the air, which could alter your perception of your perfume. Can anyone here comment of this point? If you have had the opportunity to compare the smell of a given perfume at both low and high altitudes, did it differ, and if so, how?

I don’t remember noticing any differences in how things smelled at 8,000 feet, in terms of the same perfume smelling different that at a lower altitude. Nonetheless, the super-dryness of the thin air was hard on the nose, the way artificially heated winter air is. I guess the effect is somewhat like that of winter – the kinds of scents one enjoys in hot, humid day would be too light.

I am sure I sampled it several years ago in Chicago- but I was like a kid in a candy store and overtired my nose to the point that I don’t remember it. How was it in the heat?

It is great and I like it in the heat, but I like just about everything all the time and went to bed last night wearing the very Christmasy Ambre Narguile.
I think Bois Farine has more in common with the dry desert wind/hot spice type fragrances from SL and Tauer than it does a heady gourmand. It isn’t a “bread hologram” or doughy on me, but rather an almond-y, papery/old book kind of inedible vanilla perfectly balanced with warm spices and powdery woods. It is a sheer but substantial composition that melts down to a skin scent that lasts for hours on me but isn’t a white musk. Another fave from JC Ellena. I didn’t care for it much the first few times I tried it a couple of years ago but now it is true love.
It is also one of those fragrances that make me wonder if I think it’s the bee’s knees but people around me think I smell like peanut butter and curry. Which isn’t a bad thing I suppose but it smells like a beautiful perfume not a good peanut sauce. Now I’m hungry for satay and roti canai from the pink tablecloth stalls in Kuala Lumpur. And chili crab.

I lived in San Antonio when I was in grad school, and I enjoyed it. I found plenty of diversions to occupy me, even on my next-to-nonexistent grad student budget. If you do need some refreshment during the heat, besides eau de cologne, let me recommend the Japanese Tea Garden, which is absolutely stunning. It was constructed in an old rock quarry, and includes a really lovely waterfall. Oh, and BTW, it is free. Free is good!

Oh yes- I heartily recommend a visit to our wonderful city. Other great attractions: Mission Trails, Riverwalk, La Villita, the San Antonio Zoo and the Tower of the Americas. Great Tex-Mex food and plenty of outdoor activities are close by. If you have time, day trips to Gruene and Fredericksburg offer even more food and fun. Also- one of the Antique Rose Emporiums (that have been posted about here) is at the north end of the city. A great time to come is in April- when the weather is warm but not scorching and the whole city celebrates Fiesta (and has a two week party- a lot like Mardi Gras).

The theme perfumes of my trip would be Parfum d’Empire Cuir Ottoman and Ambre Russe. I visited the USSR in 1987 and I want to travel through eastern Europe to China by train. In my own private car – the Orient Express of my dreams with polished wood paneling, deep velvet seats, and sweeping views on both sides. Of course Shalimar would be tucked away in my leather steamer, but I think Epic Woman best captures the essence of my fantasy trip.

Gah – I missed that it is supposed to be something we haven’t smelled before. I think an attar of rose and spices picked up along the way ~ maybe something blended just for me.
I only recently tried MFK Cologne pour le Soir but it is along those lines and I love it. I get mostly a honeyed rose with a hint of incense and spices. I don’t find it overpowering down here in the heat – it is more fresh and cologne-y than it is attar-like. I’ve tried the absolute but the big whopping dose of cumin almost killed me.

OK, I am finding this difficult. No. 1 is easy, maybe too easy. There are lots of places I would like to visit. No. 2 is hard, mostly because my track record with predicting which scents I will like is not so good. Lots of things I expected to love I have not. Therefore, I will go with Hawaii and Bronze Goddess.

I had the same problem. Plus I’ve been so busy that I’m far, FAR behind in the perfume world (I mean, more than usual). But as I’d like to travel many places, but have only managed Ottawa and Montreal, outside the US…. #1 is easy. 🙂

I’ve not been to many places outside the U.S. myself, but I also haven’t been to all of the U.S. either. One of my goals in life is to visit all 50 states–so far I have made it to 29, and getting to the other 21 is at the top of my travel priorities. Of the 21 I haven’t been to, the one I am most anxious to visit is Hawaii, so that was my choice for #1. Besides, I figured that if I made a bad perfume choice for a trip to Hawaii, it would be OK because at least I would be in Hawaii!

Oh so many places I want to visit… given an open plane ticket I would be so torn…
Leningrad/St. Petersburg – might need two perfumes to deal with the two names: Zagorsk for Leningrad, a severe beauty that is all the more incandescent for its simplicity; for St. Petersburg something solemn, voluptuous yet ladylike and befitting fur coats and remarkable glories hidden from prying eyes for many decades… Zibeline by Weil. (Also the basenotes.net name of a dear friend with exquisite taste. Hi Zib!)
And a cop out. North Africa somewhere and a perfume that I know and love to the extent of buying a full bottle: Andy Tauer’s L’Air du Desert Marocain. I desperately want to visit Morocco and Tunisa, but would have to take Andy’s masterpiece with me. Nothing else would do.

I had a hip replacement last week, so it will be a little while before my next trip anywhere. I’m going to answer this poll by starting with the perfume I most want to try – Zeta. Hokkaido. I’ve been to Japan (Tokyo) when I was small but my dream is to experience the Hokkaido winter, complete with hotsprings and a good kotatsu. I need to brush up on my Japanese, though. It’ll probably take awhile to get there, though. Still saving up for graduate school. Can’t think of what to take, though. Maybe that new White Pentachord by Tauer. I like your perfume choices. . .I’m curious to try Andy Tauer’s White as well. Wode would be a good one because it wears close to the body. I’d definitely avoid sillage monsters in Japan, even in the frozen north. Ja ne!

Budapest is a great choice. I went there 6 years ago, and I was impressed how over the top, how Zsa-Zsa the place was. When it came time to make the Parliament building, they held a contest and the most elaborate design won. However, they liked the other two designs also, so they made all three, right next to each other, and uesd the other two buildings for other government offices.

Here’s what the public swimming pool in one of the city parks looks like: http://vilagesegyebkatasztrofak.blogspot.com/2010/06/szechenyi-furdo.html . We didn’t have anything like that in Omaha.

Difficult choices! But if it’s somewhere I’ve never been, I think I’ll have to go with London. As for a scent I’ve never smelled but which I think might suit the location – Penhaligon’s Jubilee Bouquet.

Budapest! It is my favorite city in the world. It is a city of cathedrals–whenever I go I take Messe de Minuit. And now smelling it always takes me back there.

I want to visit St. Petersburg and would take Maroussia.

    City: New York
    Fragrance: Like This!

I’ve never been to new york, but I am starting to DREAM about going there next fall . And about the perfume, I hear it smells like pumpkin so it will be fitting for the fall trip.
Now if you guys could suggest a frag that smells like chilling air and burning dried leaves to layer under that…. 🙂

Well I really want to go to Hamburg (and I will in December :D) and I chose Black Vetyver Café but I don’t know my reasoning.
and I also want to go to the Philippines (Manila, Quezon City & Vigan) and I chose Un Jardin Sur Le Nil because I think it’ll be light and refreshing and I don’t want to smell like food but the green mango note should make it tropics-appropriate?

I am a transplanted Texan living in Beijing, China. It’s been difficult to get certain perfumes here. I will be traveling to Scotland via Paris next month and I thought maybe Annick Goutal’s Eau de Ciel would be good for a rainy place. I have always wanted to visit Finland with maybe Humiecki and Graef Clemency? And finally another fantasy would be Cambodia, but I don’t know what to wear there. I don’t like tropical or fruity smelling perfumes, so maybe something incense, saffron, or lush, instead?

good question, this summer I’m going to Berlin fo the first time, what could be the ideal scent for this trip? not too sophisticated, hippy with a slightly rough edge…have to think about it

Interesting – to me Berlin is ultra cool, so something a bit hippy and rough would be a nice contrast. OJ Taif comes to mind.

well I know the OJs..your adding the coolness makes it trickier, do you mean a laid-back kind of coolness (wchich is what I imagine) or an aloof minimalist cool?

I’m thinking of stunning modern architecture, minimalist fashion, etc. Berlin is deeper than that, of course, but on every level it seems a contrast with hippy naturalism, the Age of Aquarius, etc. So I like the contrast of something completely un-ironic.

The other scent that came to mind was S-Perfume 100% Love, the light, surreally lovely chocolate rose scent, but it lacks roughness.

I really didn’t find Berlin rough…I thought it was cozy and homey.
But I was mostly in Mitte and stayed there for most of the trip.
Where I’ll be living looks very different. There are lots of trees etc.

I’m going to Berlin for a semester and trying to think of what to bring with me.
I wore Wonderwood when I was there last time but only because I liked it enough to wear it but not enough to care if the vial leaked.
I think I’ll just bring anything. I was there in the winter and everyone was dressed exactly the same but there was no real sense of style.

I bought Un Jardin sur le Nil on my first trip to Berlin, and have worn it every time I’ve been back since, so now the two are linked in my mind. It may be a strange choice – but perhaps it could fit the hippy and a bit rough description??

This has been so much fun that I’m going to play again (is that allowed, Robin?). And – all of my ‘fumes are swapped on PP so I’m finished there.

Scotland – one of the Penhaligons (I’ve not smelled any of them!)

Tahiti – a new one that Laurie at SSS is working on. I’ve smelled a mod, but not the final version (it’s not even finished yet!)

Banff – can’t figure out an unsniffed scent for this. Any suggestions? Oh and I’d go in summer – I’m not a skier!

Banff reminds me of Angela’s September 2010 post “Lodge Chic,” for which she chose SL Chêne. I’m also thinking leather, like Etro Gomma, or how about Vol de Nuit for the woods?

Banff is one of my favorite places! I spent a lot of time there when I was (much!) younger. Fille en Aiguilles makes me think of cross country skiing through a pine forest, and then coming in to a ski hut with a warm fire for a hot drink. I wish I could think of something to evoke summer in the park – that would be limestone, sunshine, moss/bit of dirt, and wildflowers – but nothing comes to mind.

The perfume has to be unsniffed!! that makes it quite difficult.

*Forests of Ireland or even Canadian wildlife- One of boadicea the victorious perfumes

*Petra, in Jordan—-> something old, veery old, that smells ancient like, incensy…The orientalistes of annick goutal i’d say, but as the only one i have not smelled is musc nomade, i guess i say that one. Also i have been told it is the lightest one, better for the HOT weather arround there. And for the Jordan nights (one can’t go only to petra for a week…has to visit some city too..) i’d say Regina Harris perfumes, both of them, which i am willing to try for months

Oooh, I love this game. Travel is my passion, so it is fun to hear dream pairings of place and perfume.

I’d love to go to Venice, and wear Lutens Rose de Nuit. Haven’t experienced either, but both have this impression of opulence that appeals to me this morning. To pair a dramatic, rich, earthy rose with a city of such amazing art, history and romance seems perfect to me.
