MCMC Fragrances has launched Dude No. 1 Beard Oil. According to the New York Times, it was inspired by founder Anne McClain's partner, who didn't want to wear traditional fragrance:
Since McClain couldn’t convince her low-maintenance, bearded partner to sport fragrance in general (let alone her own creations), she began a personal project for him, culminating in Dude No.1, the first fragrance devoted to subtly scenting men’s whiskers.
The 100% natural formula uses Virginia cedarwood, green coriander and pink peppercorn in a base of hemp seed oil and jojoba oil.
MCMC Fragrances Dude No. 1 Beard Oil is $65 for a 25 ml roll-on. (quote via nytimes, additional information via mcmcfragrances, hat tip to Joe!)
I love this idea! A well groomed beard is so elegant.
This sounds lovely!
On the other hand Janet, I wanted to comment on an unintended comical effect your comment had on me..
You see, when a closeted gay man has a “pretend grilfriend” or wife, to divert attention, it is refferred to as a “Beard”, so “Dude No 1 Beard Oil” just sounded weird to me in that context, to start.
But reading “A well groomed Beard is so elegant” just cracked me up! hehehehe
Cheers
once again: this is a very educational site!
that was my first interpretation too 🙂
Hahaha, P. I hadn’t even thought of that, but yes, true.
I first heard “beard” in Broadway Danny Rose (one of Woody Allen’s best movies). Woody Allen’s character was pretending to date Tina, who is a single woman who is actually dating a married man, Lou. I think someone says to Allen’s character, “Who ya beardin’ for, ya little cheese-eater?” And Woody says repeatedy “I’m just the beard.” I don’t see how men can put aftershave on their faces, especially after shaving — sounds painful. The idea of slapping peppercorn, coriander, and cedarwood on one’s beard sounds painful, too. Might smell good, though.
OMG DYING at this!!! hilarious! An Elegant Beard indeed! Ive certainly been someones beard especially in high school, oh how I love my gay BFs.. More fun than any other! We do deserve a scented oil…
I think she says it’s really just for the smell…doesn’t do much else (?)
seems kind of icccky to put oil on a beard…. but it is presented in a roller ball so maybe it is so named to appease her man’s sense of dude-li-ness ?
Ooh, I like the sound of those notes. Simple and virile.
I do love cedar & coriander! But I don’t need a beard oil 🙂
If it was designed for use on a beard, it might smell good combed through a woman’s hair, too (something I love to to do)….
Hee! At first I thought this was a tie-in with the movie “The Big Lebowski”. There’s all kinds of merch for sale out there related to The Dude. She may get a lot of unexpected sales from all guys aspiring to Dude-ness!
*That* dude really does need a celebrity perfume 🙂
Do men really oil their beards?
I was recommended to oil my beard recently – I went through a “personal fragrance journey”, with the end result being a bespoke perfume. I was given a Parfum-concentration (25%) spray and a pure parfum roll-on, which I was told would be wonderful if I rolled it on my fingers and applied lightly to my beard.
For some reason I think it sounds weird and haven’t tried it out yet. Worried about olfactory fatigue with the scent that close to my face – you know, on it… But I’ve heard Lemmy from Motorhead sprays his beard (liberally) with Allure before a show. If Lemmy’s into it, it can’t be wrong!
I’ve been dabbling off and on with a very very short beard recently.
I don’t know what “proper” grooming techniques are — I don’t oil, but I do use lotion with added vitamin E oil daily. One thing I don’t like is that with beard growth, it’s really hard to exfoliate the skin within the beard, so I get “flaky.” I use a soft brush in the shower every few days. Probably TMI.
I’m all for anything that gets people to wear even the lightest of fragrance. I’m still curious about some of the MCMC line.
My father, who is not able to grow a beard, does add fragrance oils to his hair. He’s an old hippy, and I grew up with him dabbing a bit of patchouli onto his fingers and rubbing it through his long, lovely locks. I never knew any other way to apply oils until I was an adult!
Also, I have an African American friend who oils her hair every weekend as part of her grooming. I think coarse beard hair might have some similarities to coarse African-type hair?
Lol, maybe my dude would like to try some on his beard!
Your dude seems game to just about any scent experiment! I say give it a sniff, and if you wanna smell it on him, it won’t be hard to convince him! *MR waves at Mr. Warum*
I look forward to growing my beard out in the colder months–but it gets so itchy and distracting at a certain length. I do end up massaging moisturizer into it and combing it to help exfoliate. I may need to try this next winter and go all the way with beard grooming!
