Dawn Spencer Hurwitz Cuir et Champignon ~ new fragrance

Posted by Robin on 8 November 2010 20 Comments

Dawn Spencer Hurwitz Cuir et Champignon fragrance

Dawn Spencer Hurwitz has launched Cuir et Champignon:

I have had this dream of making a mushroom perfume for many years now...always in search for just the right balance to create an earthy and yes, delicious, aroma experience with a feel that is true to mushroom but also that of a true 'perfume'. Now I have found it, the balance and counterpoint: leather. Cuir et Champignon embodies all the soft and inviting qualities of white button mushrooms, then leads you to a more hidden place where the darker mushrooms grow and on to rich rawhide and dusty leather.

The notes include bergamot, clary sage, galbanum, neroli, chamomile, mushroom absolute, clove, gardenia, honey, orris, sandalwood, tuberose, castoreum, civet, guiacwood, Hiba cedarwood, vetiver, leather, Peru balsam and tobacco.

Dawn Spencer Hurwitz Cuir et Champignon is available in Perfume Oil or Eau de Parfum in a variety of formats, $22-100.

Lemming!!!! And at least it’s an affordable one. Thank you, DSH!

Hmm. I’d be curious to sniff a sample, but something about it makes me wary that it would make me ill. I love FM Dans tes Bras, but I don’t get the “mushroom” that people talk about in that.

So far, the mushroom scents I’ve smelled are earthy, not really foody…none of them have really made me feel like I’m wearing mushroom, exactly.

Hmmm, very curious to try this.
I have Cielo and it is earthy and sweet, nicely balanced.

I’m not a huge lover of mushrooms but would still be interested in giving this one a go. TF Black Orchid and I seem to get along in very small doses now, so I am encouraged that mushroom can work for me if not too heavy-handed. And I do love earthy/skanky in a perfume, so will have to remember to add a sample of this whenever I get around to placing my ginormous DSH sample order.

I have a sample of this from Sniffa , at it doesn’t scream mushroom . Just a little funk on the leather , giving it a well worn feel , without the sharpness . The best leather ever !
FBW , am ordering a bottle very soon !

That does sound interesting. I haven’t gotten much into DSH. I have a few samples but I get overwhelmed by all the offerings!

That’s a common complaint about the number of fragrances offered on Dawn’s website. When I started to sample her fragrances (following an initial modest sample order), I contacted her via email to discuss my likes and dislikes and “where to go from here.”
She is very helpful and very prompt in responding. I still have hits and misses, but have found some lovely products that work for me.

That is very cool, Opera. I’ll have to try that!

Oh good for her, this one sounds very interesting. But…can’t help wishing for shitakes or morels or at least creminis. It’s been a long time since I’ve used white mushrooms. They have almost no taste to me. Still very curious though.

It sounded to me like it started w/white mushroom then moved along to the others? I love mushrooms to eat, but am not sure I want to wear them. I did like CBIHP Wild Hunt, though, but even then, more as a scent memory than as a wearable fragrance.

I misread it as Cuir et *Champage* and got very very interested. I was thinking how I’d really wanted to sniff a leathery take on Yvresse. Oh well, maybe next time.

This sounds interesting. I am guessing that the mushroom absolute is probably woody. Not that pricey either.

This sounds so good I’m putting it in my Bookmark folder for perfume. I keep meaning to try DSH. Maybe next poll.

I have not ventured into her territory…how many more houses can I possibly afford!!! This sounds like something I would really like to try!

She’s well worth the effort, IMO, hongkongmom. I am always impressed by her work, even when it’s not always my thing. Her selection can be overwhelming, but I appreciate that I can keep coming back to her when I want something new. And I really appreciate it when the perfumers offer samples, sets and a variety of sizes to make things affordable to all of us. Sonoma Scent Studio and Liz Zorn (SOIVOHLE) are a couple others that you should check out if you haven’t already.
