Ineke Gilded Lily ~ new perfume

Posted by Robin on 26 July 2010 28 Comments

Ineke Gilded Lily fragrance

Niche line Ineke will launch Gilded Lily, the seventh fragrance in their alphabetical series, in September:

When Ineke read about the amazing scent of the Goldband Lily of Japan (lilium auratum), she felt compelled to order a few for her garden to study their fragrance. This note became the heart of Gilded Lily...

Gilded Lily’s "fruity chypre" structure opens with sparkling top notes of pineapple and rhubarb followed by the goldband lily, and closes with patchouli, oakmoss and amber. Gilded Lily is the quintessential well-groomed scent, accompanied by a head-turning deliciousness.

The phrase “gilding the lily” was coined by William Shakespeare in his play, King John. Ineke feels it is an apt description for perfumery in general since perfumers are always looking for ways to embellish the beauty of nature...

Ineke Gilded Lily will be available in 75 ml Eau de Parfum, $88. Customers who have purchased full-sized products or the Deluxe Sample Collection V3 directly from Ineke will receive a free sample in the mail when they are available. (via press release)

Thanks for this post , Robin! I agree with Dissed. What a great name! It stirs up all the nature in artifice/artifice in nature questions that I love to read about. It would be perfect for a dandy’s perfume.
The concept sounds lovely, too, but the pineapple note could be a problem for me. Must sample.

I fully agree, great name (so, there’s still some potential out there, no need for silly names I’m ashamed to mention, when asked what scent I’m wearing) and yes, not sure about the pineapple note either.. does sound sampleble (can I say that?)

This sounds so good. I wonder if it will have any resemblance to Colony? Okay by me if it does!

The word ‘gilded’ somehow puts me off this perfume, as though there were a layer of stuff hindering the lily’s smell! Am not excited about the name but am definitely curious as to the smell of goldband lily.

That’s funny, I was kind of thinking the same thing. I’ve always heard people use the term “gilding the lily” as a tongue in cheek euphemism for “doing the best with the ugly I’ve got.”

And I think it means killing a naturally beautiful thing by over-decorating it (that is, by painting a flower with gold, you would metaphorically and literally smother its natural beauty). Regardless, it definitely has a negative association for me, too!

Yes, Miss Kitty, SuddenlyInexplicably got it right. Your version I hear more often as “puting lipstick on a pig.”

Or the more refined version–making a silk purse our of sow’s ear.

Poor piggies, why is everyone always running them down? ;-)

The version I was referring to was more of a joke– sorry if that wasn’t clear.

Well glad you guys agree with me! :)

However, that’s all semantics, schmantics… They gotta find some way to stand out from the rest of the 100000000 fragrances released every year (ok i exaggerate)

Since I don’t have access to Gilded Lily would like to hear from those who’ve tried if its top notes resemble Badgley Mischka in any way?

I really need to get on to ordering that sampler set from Ineke. I’m in love with Field Notes and also love pineapple and chypres, so imagine I’d really like this one. They seem like a really great fragrance house both in fragrance name and concept as well as customer service and generosity. How refreshing. :)

not only is the sampler a good idea for the sake of sniffing , but then you can get $25 off a FB purchase—pretty nice!

That is a good deal and the samplers are great. I bought one when Field Notes came out. I love the name and what I assume is the box art. I’m sort of lukewarm about her perfumes in general but there are a couple that I like. I can’t wait to see the bottle – the last one was gorgeous!

I hafta giggle when they reference Shakespeare’s “King John”. He was such a bad king that the the name completely dropped out of use in every subsequent royal dynasty. I can remember this sentence about him: “King John ruled for another X years, and solved his problems by dying in 1216.”

The notes on this sound so bad that I kind of figure they have to be good. But maybe that’s just me. (Having pineapple and patchouli together in the same room kind of scares me.)

I’m imagining 1804 (Histoires de parfum)–but with a lot more patchouli and less pineapple–just based on how patchouli is used in Field Notes from Paris. [1804 does not have pineapple listed on the official HdP website, but that’s almost all I smell for the first 20 mn. Is it just me/]

I’ve kind of been on an Ineke kick lately. Also, just yesterday in the shower I was trying to think of what her next fragrance would be titled. Golden something? Grey something? I’m very excited to try Gilded Lily. :)

Oh! Oh! I didn’t realize that purchasing a sampler makes us eligible for a new samples in the mail! This would be lovely. I bought a sampler but still haven’t decided which fragrance I’d like to put it toward — which probably means I didn’t love any of them enough!..

I didn’t now that either! I’ve bought the sample pack and FB so maybe a sample will be coming my way.

Well then you’ll definitely get it. From what I’ve seen on Ineke’s website I recall that she’ll send samples to those who bought FBs.

Which one did you buy? I am still thinking about either A or B, and I still have a little on the bottom of each sample. C, D, and E I found very disagreeable and F is not quite my style.
