Its huge inflorescence...and powerful roadkill aroma attracted several hundred flies and three thousand visitors.
It is now producing its second inflorescence and is expected to bloom sometime between June 8-12. Because of its unpredictable nature, the exact date can't be known in advance. And when it blooms, it will happen fast (within hours) and only last one night!
— Another corpse flower is set to bloom, this one at Eastern Illinois University's Thut Greenhouse. They've got a blog and a webcam and a Twitter stream following its progress.
Awesome! We went and saw it’s last inflorescence in 2008.
I love that they mention that you can go see it from the sidewalk outside in the event you can’t stand to get any closer to the scent!
It’s almost like the titan arum is becoming passe with all these blooms! I’m still scheming to get to the Huntington…
It’s true! According the blog linked above, the first one in the US to bloom was in 1937. Looks like the many greenhouses in this country have found them worth cultivating, and no surprise since they get so much publicity. I wish Longwood had one, that’s the only greenhouse near me.
