You probably didn’t even know it was National Hamburger Month

Posted by Robin on 5 May 2010 43 Comments

White Castle Scented Candle

New from White Castle (yes, that White Castle): a candle that smells like, well, you can already guess, right?

To commemorate the 18th annual celebration of National Hamburger Month, White Castle has teamed up with Laura Slatkin, often called the "queen" of home fragrances, to introduce a candle with the steam-grilled-on-a-bed-of-onions scent of America's first fast-food hamburger. Packaged in a ceramic holder that reproduces the signature cardboard sleeve of the White Castle Slyder.

The candle is $10, and proceeds will benefit Autism Speaks. Buy one now. (found via popwatch.ew, with many thanks to JanJan for the link!)

    Eau de Greasy Spoon?

Fun from a kitsch factor though.

    Oh good lord!
I can see this as kind of humorous….and if you like that sort of thing; even a little cute…… but ew…a hamburger & onions scented candle?? Those are the sorts of smells I try to get OUT of my house! I’ve never had a White Castle and I’m happy to leave it that way….fast food in general kind of grosses me out (I know, my family is an American oddity—-we don’t eat fast food….ever) although the CEO does love to throw a burger on the grill….so Hamburger Month is cool although I admit that until this moment I had no idea that there was a Nat. Hamburger Month….This site is certainly educational :-)

Sadly, b/c of my many years living in Ohio, White Castle has very discouraging connotations for me – greasy, totally lacking in nutrition, and yet oh so affordable to the poor. The patties have holes in them to make them look bigger from the outside! Ugh. I can’t even imagine wanting to smell that greasy burger in your house! This candle is horrifying to me – unless any proceeds from it go to help support food banks.

OK – I see the proceeds for autism now… so it is a little less awful.

You called it: I didn’t know it was National Hamburger Month. I did, however, know it was Zombie Awareness Month. That would probably make an even LESS appealing candle. xD

Awesome — we needed a Zombie Awareness Month! And just found out yesterday that May 4 is Star Wars Day.

And May 6 is Nurses’ Day! I’m a nurse and would love a scented candle in our honor! Or…perhaps not…hmmm….. ;)
LOL at burning this candle in an open house. Worth a try!

I think the funniest thing about this is that Slatkin is involved. Glad it’s for charity!

I am mystified that people would actually purchase this. Then I got to thinking that my dear old dad managed a WC when he was young and went on to own many restaurants–he owed it all to WC. We were not allowed to even visit McDonalds parking lot :0)
I don’t eat fast food or hamburger, but in honor of my dad I think I’ll try to get the candle. Fun post, Robin!!!
….gee, wonder who had the idea to make it hamburger month?

All I can say is…WOW. Although I would bet this might become popular with the real estate crowd. Used to be the smell of apple pie baking sold houses – but these days White Castle might be more recognizable!

They should have made it a bacon double cheeseburger. I can think of quite a few people who would go for a bacon-scented candle…

    get out…
I’ve been sitting here with my jaw dropped open for at least five minutes and just can’t seem to get it together

I never thought I’d be bummed that anything from White Castle sold out before I could get one. I never knew they had an online store where I could get an overpriced shower curtain (but can you really put a price on the rolling-around-on-the-floor laughter you’ll get from your guests when they enter the bathroom?) I also never knew that there was a proper way to spell “slyder” and that it is with a “y”.

I can’t wait to call my mom and tell her about this.

    This really sounds quite nasty.

I’d prefer to bypass the candle and just donate to Autism Speaks, but to each his/her own. :)

What a hoot! My father would have loved this, as White Castles were his favorite indulgence. My mother, however, would have been running around either lighting another type of candle or using room spray to counteract it!

And I must go check out that shower curtain!

I want one, too! In high school (long, long ago) White Castles were a quarter and the perfect thing to eat after a long night of driving around, looking for something to do, smoking a little. Those days before cable, MTV – before even video games and FM radio. We had to smoke pot and eat White Castles; what else was there to do?
