Parfums de Nicolai Jardin Secret ~ new perfume

Posted by Robin on 5 November 2009 50 Comments

Parfums de Nicolaï Jardin Secret

Parfums de Nicolaï has introduced Jardin Secret, a possibly* new fragrance:

This fragrance is composed of floral top notes of Moroccan Atlas rose, and finishes on a base of Ylang-Ylang and Jasmine. A delightfully feminine and sweet floral.

Parfums de Nicolaï Jardin Secret is available now at Beautyhabit in 30 (shown above, $45) or 100 ($130) ml Eau de Parfum. (via beautyhabit)

* The line used to have a fragrance by the same name; this one sounds rather different but I'm not positive that it is.

I like that PdN is doing 30 ml. Very affordable! Not really into the excessively florallyness (new word) of this one, but who knows.

Yeah, $45-$50 is a nice price point.

And I like “Florallyness” better than “Floralcy” (to me the latter reminds me of dental floss for some reason). :)

        Flouride-y? :)
Haven’t tried any of these but am loving that price/size.

ahhhg….floralated sounds too much like a medical procedure:

“Floralate the patient and 10cc’s of epinephrine, STAT!”

Well, I like ylang ylang as a rule, so I wouldn’t rule it out, but the PdNs I have tried – and I have tried a fair few – all seem wrong in some way, every last one. Dull, or indolic, or a bit weird or in some way discordant.

Oh, I’m glad I’m not the only one not “getting” PdN!!
But the 30 ml concept is all right :D

Hear hear! I visited the site recently, and it looked just the same as it had months ago, with none of the new stuff.

I’ve liked many of the PdNs I tried. I’m testing out Patchouli Homme today. (I need to wear them for several hours to decide what I really think.) PH has a weird green pepper thing going on with the Patchouli. Strange but interesting.

I don’t love everything PdN puts out, but the ones I love, I really adore – Le Temps d’une Fete and Vanille Tonka. Also seriously considering decants of Juste un Reve and Odalisque. Kudos to PdN yet again for those 1 oz bottles (and if you work out the per-ml price, the 1 oz bottles are only a few pennies higher than the big bottle).

I will definitely be sniffing this one. Rose, ylang, and jasmine? Contented sigh. You know me, a sucker for floralcy. Or floss, whatever.

I’m with Mals and other fans; I love a lot of PdNs and I was happy to finally get a sample of Sacrebleu recently. Still lemming a sample of Odalisque. And yeah, PdN was ahead of the 30ml trend which seems to be becoming more popular. Yeah!

No, I didn’t, but looks like it won’t be exported to the US? In which case I might skip it. I really can’t keep up anymore, so whatever I can let go, I do.

I decided to cross it off my “to sample” list for the same reason. And then someone sent me a sample. And of course, I liked it. So I set it aside and refused to give it a real test, lest I decide that I need it.

          • Joe says:
            5 November 2009 at 4:39 pm

Ah… did not know PdN had an export and “exclusive” line like Lutens. Other than that Paris-only Balkis Light that you made me crave.

            5 November 2009 at 8:37 pm

Joe, I don’t know if they really do or if their US distributor just doesn’t pick up all the scents? I just know that not everything shows up here.

“finishes on a base of ylang ylang and jasmine”

Obviously no perfumer read the copy before it was released. Neither of those flowers are base notes, and can never be no matter how the fragrance is composed. It has to do with evaporation rates, and base notes evaporate much more slowly than those florals. I guess what they’re trying to say is that there are no base notes and so the fragrance disappears after you’ve smelled the heart notes.

Sorry for the rant; this kind of inaccuracy drives me crazy! (I know, short trip!)

It is of course terribly unlikely anyway that all the fragrance has is rose, ylang and jasmine…so yes, we’re missing the base notes here!

I just received my first 30ml bottle purchase of Odalisque from LS. Hopefully the formula hasn’t changed since the sample I purchased early this summer since LS was out of stock for quite a while. I just love the timelessness of the feel of this scent – and I generally don’t like scents with a prominent LOTV note.
Rose + Jasmin + Ylang-Ylang was the (essential oil) scent combination I used to request back in the ’90s when Aveda’s in NYC offered the Himalayan Rejuvination Treatment. For the rose and jasmin lovers, it was the most beautiful combination, and I am really looking forward to trying this scent.

I just purchased the big bottle of Odalisque. I love it! I spritzed it on as soon as I got home.
This one sounds good too. If it shows up near me, I’ll definitely give it a try.

A lovely MUA’er sent me a sample of the new version of the Jardin Secret earlier this week, and I wore it yesterday. (She also sent me a sample of the earlier version of Jardin Secret, but I haven’t tried them at the same time to compare yet).

If you like Odalisque, I think you might really like this. It has a similar feel as if it is from an earlier era, without having that slightly odd buttery feel of odalisque. So, also, if you like Odalisque but it was slightly “off” on you, this might be perfect.

And am wearing the new Odalisque today – no change, still a lovely, soft floral chypre that seem to come from a of BW photos era. Very happy with my purchase!

Oh, good to hear that it doesn’t seem to have changed much – rumors were flying that it was going to be reformulated, and perhaps it has been but with less-than-disastrous results. Now I should go searching for a decant…
