Dunhill 51.3 N ~ new fragrance

Posted by Robin on 29 September 2009 27 Comments

Dunhill 51.3 fragrance for men, full range

Dunhill has launched 51.3 N, a new fragrance for men named for the latitude of London:

Soaring high. Bank into the blue. A glider grazes the clouds as the ground drops away. The speed is exhilarating, yet the soundlessness of the flight is calming and the course is set - the latitude is 51.3 N and the destination is London. The fragrance is distinctively dunhill. Masculine, confident, highly innovative yet essentially elegant.

This contemporary take on the spirit of adventure is perfectly reflected by dunhill’s new fragrance, 51.3 N and sensationally communicated by the image of gliding. This most British of sports offers a taste of awe-inspiring freedom, where courage meets contemplation and drama meets discipline.

51.3 N features notes of crispy rhubarb, grapefruit, ozone accord, pink and black pepper, lavender, cedar leaf, sandalwood and vanilla.

Dunhill 51.3 N is available in 30, 50 and 100 ml Eau de Toilette and in matching grooming products. It is currently exclusive to Harrods in the UK. (via press release from Harrods)

Meh… But speaking of Dunhill, what happened to the wonderful Dunhill Edition? They don’t list it on their website anymore. Please tell me it isn’t discontinued!

It’s cold out so all I can think of when I read this is “rhubarb crisp” and how yummy it would be right now with some hot cider.

I assume you’ve tried Mugler’s B*Men, then? The top is a sort of Lutens-esque stewed-fruit thing with lots of rhubarb (astringent at first, then cooked and spiced), really very nice.

      Is that, like, deep-fried rhubarb?

HA! I was thinking the same thing… CRISPY rhubarb? or CRISP?

I do love a rhubarb note though.

And cedar *leaf*? I guess I don’t think of them as very leaf-like, but whatever works…

I’ve seen that several times lately…must be some new green cedar chemical or something.

Well now…. technically, according to my kindergartener’s science book about leaves, they *are* leaves. And doesn’t cedar leaf sound prettier than cedar needle? :D

Sure, I can “buy” the concept of leaf (I Googled both leaf and needle before I wrote the first comment and found that both are in use)… I’m also just wondering if the “leaf” provides a unique scent or it’s really mostly coming from the wood. Anyway, it was new to me.

“Gliding” is the “most British of sports”? What about cricket? What about bringing down the stands at the footie match? What about DARTS? And somehow, heading straight for London in your glider gives me a feeling of, I dunno, PANIC rather than elation, irrespective of all the crispy rhubarb in the kingdom. I say, watch out for that steeple!

I’m almost certain the scent of PANIC would have grapefruit in it …and you all know why. ;-)

I can see the advertising now… Jude Law in a Dunhill aviator outfit, gliding onto the top of Fortnum and Masons. Once he lands, he just unzips it and steps out in an immaculate Dunhill tux and picks a cedar leaf out of his hair… and proceeds to fill the tote at said store with rhubarb, grapefruits, peppercorns, vanilla beans before turning to the camera and with his most seductive look says “When unexpected guests drop in for the weekend, I set my course for 51.3N”…

Make that Henry Cavill & you’ve probably got it.

The flanker will surely be the longitude of London. 00°07′41″W , though that doesn’t seem as catchy as the latitude… and it WILL celebrate cricket, with notes of tea, freshly mown grass, crisp(y) cucumber etc. Though maybe that one should be named Lords (now that Penhaligons has given up that name) and perhaps Henry Cavill could front that one! Wait (on a roll here) perhaps Comme des Garcons should do that one as a collaboration with Lords itself? Why stop there, Wimbledon, Wembley….

I think it’s sort of a flanker to Dunhill London.
