Soivohle Bottleneck Blues, Oudh Lacquer ~ new fragrances

Posted by Robin on 17 September 2009 19 Comments

Soivohle Bottleneck Blues perfume

Soivohle’ (formerly Liz Zorn) has launched two new fragrances, Bottleneck Blues and Oudh Lacquer:

Bottleneck Blues (shown above) ~ "Bottleneck Blues are slide guitar blues, a style that originated in the Mississippi Delta area of the United States. The scent is rich and sensual, with opening notes of grasses, animalic musk, damp earth and tonka beans. The tonka note is dominant throughout the scent. A satiny floral heart of lilac, rose, tuberose and jasmine, followed by a warm transition to woods, moss and a rich ambergris, castoreum drydown. There are many accompanying notes in this scent, working together to create a complex synergy. All with one objective in mind. The blues." Bottleneck Blues is available in 5 ($35) or 15 ($90) ml Parfum.

Oudh Lacquer ~ "A sensual journey featuring a complex blend of agarwood oils, sink wood tincture and a stellar cast of supporting players. In cooking we temper the chocolate, with Oudh Lacquer we are using chocolate to temper the Oud. The scent opens with a bright balance of the Oud paired with Linden Blossom Absolute, Cepes, Anise. Orange, and Combava Petitgrain followed by a warm floral heart of Absolutes including, Orange Blossom, Rose, Aglaia, Champaca and Iris (orris butter) along with spice notes of Cinnamon and Clove. The scent is grounded in a complex pairing of notes including Cocoa Absolute, Honey, Woods, Tolu, Styrax (ambar), Patchouli, Benzoin, Tonka, Vanilla and Angelica Root Oil." Oudh Lacquer is available in 4.5 ($90) or 15 ($260) ml Parfum.

I love aoud scent, but this constant process of launching new agarwood fragrances is starting to makes me tired of it.

True: there’s too much oud this year. When it rains, it pours.

And it makes no sense at all because agarwood is scarcer than ever. No doubt some of the new releases are inspired by a spanky new synthetic, but it actually makes me worry a little…

I got a little excited when I saw that the Bottleneck Blues was $35 for 5ml of parfum, but then the Oud being $90 for 4.5ml seems a little steep.

I guess it costs more to make?

Oud and Chocolate? Is that a first Rob? Can’t recall of any off the top of my head.

I can’t think of one, but seems like Montale has done every possible combination — maybe they make one!

Music can be such a great creative catalyst for fragrance – I’m excited about a blues-flavored scent. …and I’ll admit, most of the blues events I’ve attended could have smelled better. But that’s a lot of notes! I have no idea what it will actually smell like. (but do we ever?)

I’d expect a blues-flavored scent to smell like barbecue sauce and Jax beer, but I don’t get that from the list of notes.

Thank you for posting our news. It is true about the Oud scents, we were going to launch this last fall but thought it would get lost in the Oud mania. A year went by and the same thing, so it is a matter at some point of just jumping in.
And yes it does cost a lot more to make, which is why we price our perfumes according to cost, and not just a random number.
A method to the madness so to speak.

That makes sense – much more than everything being the same price. So I do appreciate that while the Oud is expensive, that you kept the Bottleneck Blues in line with costs. Thank you.

Oud, mushroom, and chocolate sounds really interesting. Definitely worth at least a sample. And I like blues, so would be curious to check out a fragrant interpretation.

My jury is out on tonka, but I think both of these are worth a try. Kinda drooling on the Oudh, actually. There are a lot of Ouds out there but I don’t own one yet!

I do like oudh…but not sure how many I need. Unlike vetiver, which is endlessly appealing to me.
