OK, I’m not one to get my hackles raised by un-PC-ness, but somehow this one made my jaw drop. Is it the oddness of an old dead white guy calling something “Black Soul”? Is it the apparent whiteness of the model advertising it (although admittedly it’s hard to tell)? Is it the Manhunt-esque soft-porn style of the ad? Or is it just me?

Anyway, the notes sound kind of scrumptious — as both a sweet roll and a fragrance!

I don’t know…I did not take the “Black” in “Black Soul” as referring to race at all.

You know, it didn’t even dawn on me at first that it could NOT be about race, but now that you mention it I suppose you’re right. Still, if some of us are getting the wrong impression, perhaps the marketing folks should have rethought this one (then again, perhaps any attention is good attention). Dark Soul, anyone?!

Yes, that would work! Too late now, I guess.

I’m with you, Natalie, if only because the word “black” followed by “soul” suggests soul food and soul music. I’d think that at least they might use a black model for the ad.

Sounds nice, though. Dates, raisins, saffron, vanilla-y tolu, and cinnamon? I’m there.

Yeah, that part sounded nice to me… why the spearmint, though?

      LOL! Manhunt-esque!

I didn’t think about “Black Soul” too much, but the ad is really just way too much body-waxed airbrushed caricature for me… even for the realm of men’s perfume ads. So tiresome.

I think I officially have listened to too much kpop and read too many kpop blogs that use “Seoul” as a play on “soul” as their title

That ad is exploiting men ]:< (jk idc)

    This isn´t fair! 🙂

I am just about to go out for brunch, and as I didn´t have dinner last night, I was planning on eating without remorse..
And now this.. Darn you Ted Lapidus and your ads! I will probably order soup and a sandwich! hehehehehe.

The fragrance sounds as dense as Lapidus Pour Homme if you go by the notes (but at least … no pineapple!! 🙂 )

I will certainly give it a try 😀

Ok 1 year later, I have finally tried this!

When it starts it is strong on the spearmint, and the rest of the notes conjure up something like a cola drink, or a hint of licorice….. then come the rest of the notes, I can certainly smell them all with cinnamon and the ” Medjool date” (I’ve mostly tried candied-preserve dates but this is nice, it reminds me a bit of the date note on Globe de Rochas) and the saffron. In the end I smell what I want to believe is tolu balm (something like peru balm) and the rest is just a mix, the balm overruns and last longer than the rest.
Too foody and tangy for me, but I can imagine a lot of people liking it. I believe it is a fragrance that doesn´t cost much to make, but at the same time does not smell “cheap” at all, so kudos to Lapidus.

Interesting notes….raisin?? never seen that before…but I’m sort of still at that “raw recruit” stage so maybe raisin is everywhere and I’m just unaware. The name could have been better and even though I don’t believe they intended a racial connotation I think there’s one there for many people….maybe that’s why they put a white dude in the ad? Yeah, it creates kind of a strange non-p.c. weirdness….and if I was in marketing I wouldn’t do that on purpose. Of course, you all know me—it’s got raisin, which is new to me so I’m gonna need a sniff!

No, don’t think anybody would do it on purpose. I suppose that’s why I didn’t think it referenced race. Who knows, thoough.

Gosh, it seems the name is awkward (to me anyway)??
It’s been eons since I’ve smelled anything from TL. I think Creation was the last frag I wore from the line….
