There is so little perfume coverage in the July issue of Allure that it's hardly worth mentioning, but here it is, and as always, please comment on any fragrance coverage you've seen in other fashion & beauty magazines lately:
Cover: Fergie.
Scent strips: Not a one.
Editorial coverage: The Beauty Reporter section includes a "Smell This" feature in which random passersby comment on the new Guerlain Voyages Olfactifs trio (p. 46).
That's it!
God that cover pic is so touched up.
I don’t have any clue who she is and did not bother to read the article, so didn’t notice.
you really don’t know Fergie? blissful life…. lol
It’s working for me so far 😉
Not to be snarky (because I’m certainly no fan of Fergie’s) but if YOU were on the cover of a national beauty magazine – in a bikini, no less, would you want to be on every newsstand in America and beyond, looking bad? Photo retouching is a given and in this digital age, it’s expected.
If I ever have a “portrait” done, I definitely need to have a magazine cover photographer do the job! Of course no one would recognize me but I’d have it framed!
Dismal coverage as usual….and you know, I hardly even glance at any magazines anymore…95% is advertising and the writing is just garbage! I spend my reading time at interesting and enriching places like NST and Perfume Posse.
Pretty sure this is the worst month (for perfume) at Allure ever….I might let this subscription go if this keeps up.
They used to have really great articles about perfume. In fact, part of what triggered my perfume mania was the article on the Chanel Les Exclusifs, which was, if memory serves, three or four pages long. I’m with you, Robin–if they keep this up, I’ll let my subscription lapse, too.
I’m curious about magazine scent strips. I subscribe to many fashion and beauty mags – Bazaar, Allure, Vogue, InStyle, Elle, etc. Scent strips have been mysteriously MIA the past 3 or so months. Made me start wondering if they’re banned? But then I received my copy of Conde Nast Traveler and there was a scent strip for the men’s Polo Blue. Huh? The one that keeps appearing, though, is that deodorant/body spray thing that’s supposed to be a “fragrance.”
Last month’s Allure had 1 single scent strip, and it was for a deodorant, not a fragrance. I would have said it was just companies cutting way back on advertising expenses, but look at all the scent strips in the men’s mags:

Strange that men’s mags would have more strips than Vogue, Bazaar, Allure ??!!!?? We should protest! Ha ha.
Yes, it struck me as odd. But then, women’s fragrance spending is down, and maybe men’s isn’t, I don’t know.
“Women’s” stuff is always so much more expensive. I can’t think of much marketed to us that we can get for less than $80, and nothing under $65. There are plenty of “men’s” frags under $50 for the smaller size!
Maybe we gals finally *aren’t* willing to pay more?
I did hear not too long ago, maybe you all did too, that there are, right now, more men in the world than women. So maybe it has to do with who, subconscoiusly, needs to be more competitive. I’ve read that this has something to do with women’s clothing trends being more modest or not.
The men’s area is a relatively untapped market. Gillette just launched a new campaign “The Best A Man Can Get” which seems to focus on doubts a man may have and how their (Gillette’s) products can help his confidence. (Hey, I’m just lettin’ you know — I didn’t come up with idea!) They’re using regular guys along with Tiger Woods, Derek Jeter and Roger Federer. The press release mentioned making women’s beauty dreams real and helping men look and be their best every day. Interesting phrasing.
Im surprised Michael Jackson isnt on the cover.
How do those scent strips hold the fragrance for so long?
cover was probably developed several weeks ago…I was shocked how fast the media was all over Michael Jackson passing, with specials and tributes etc. (like a pack of veritable vultures)
Actually, for anyone the media considers newsworthy, they start working on this stuff before the person dies because they want to be FIRST to get the news out there. Every once in awhile, an obit will make it into the paper by mistake for someone who hasn’t died (and isn’t even ill!).
I don’t know the technology behind scent strips. It sure works, whatever it is.
Allure is starting to piss me off! What happened to all of their heretofore wonderful perfume coverage? Even the new Guerlain trio was not described properly and given short shrift.
If this continues, I will cancel my subscription.
Do I sound happy, lol??
Hugs!
Maybe we should all write and complain. Seriously.
I am thinking about doing just that.
I am also tired of seeing these less than A list gals on the cover. Who’s next? Miley Cyrus??
There was a time when I wouldn’t have imagined myself saying this, but here it is: I miss models. Anyone remember when models were on the cover of magazines?
I was looking at Big Bang (Korean boyband) photoshoots and they were fierce as hex.

I think American magazines and photographers need to ~*get with it*~ and learn how to be creative.
btw every Korean singer/group ever is planning on coming to America, so by next year probably only Korean stars will be on the cover (jk even though I wish)
I miss them, too. I can’t remember the last time Allure had a model on the cover. Vogue vacillates between using models and actresses/famous people.
I miss models too! I can’t pretend that I don’t love to read trashy celebrity gossip, but I am sick of the celebrification of everything — celebs on every magazine cover, celebs doing the voices for animated movies, etc. etc. I say leave it to the pros!
Well said, everyone. I too miss the days of models on magazine covers. I also miss models in advertising – especially fragrance advertising. Celebrities are so overexposed in the media that, even if I don’t really *want* to know who they are, I still find out more about them than I care to just by standing in line at the grocery store. All this baggage ruins an ad campaign IMO. Ever since I first started reading fashion mags, I always liked to imagine myself as that mysterious woman in the ad. I’ve also found that models – because it’s their job – just seem to know what they’re doing so much better in these ads and photospreads. Celebrities look much more awkward to me and as if they need to be heavily coached by the photographer. I guess it’s kind of in the same way that models rarely work out well as actors. Each has their own skillset.
Definitely, write to tell the editors of any mag if you’re disappointed at the direction they’re taking– if you consider yourself a “loyal reader”, anyway. I haven’t bothered with Allure myself beyond reading it at the doctor’s office. Vogue still seems to be the only fashion/beauty mag with a page or two of actual text (and on subjects beyond fashion and beauty, gasp); the rest seem to print nothing but “advertorials” alongside the ads.
Agree on that, although in the “old days” Allure had more perfume coverage than Vogue.
I have a subscription to Allure and I have already written them to complain about their dwindling fragrance coverage as well as the tiremsomeness of their covers (celebs as well as the repetitive style – one month looking much like the next). I think I will write them again and mention NST as a reference. I specifically didn’t mention it before because I didn’t want to seem like I was part of a too-niche market to matter. I encourage everyone else to write, even if you don’t have a subscription.
R, I wonder if they’re in financial trouble, like so many print publications that are losing advertising revenues.
Could be…
27 comments and no mention of Allure’s perfume giveaway? You can enter to win their 10 Sexiest scents on the Free Stuff Page. There is actually some good stuff in there – Mitsouko (but it looks like the EDT), Cuir de Russie, Black Orchid, Noir Epices, Gucci, Narcisco Rodriguez for Her and some others.
Oh, thanks — I missed that entirely!
Ya beat me to it, CynthiaW. 🙂
