Is anyone else put off by the name of the company, or is it just me? I think they must be going for that “beauty in becoming” caterpillar to butterfly idea, but — ew, IMO.

I agree. Pupa has this whole “gross-sounding word” thing going for it; and I picture them as sticky, squishy creatures sort of between caterpillar and bug, no matter what the shell looks like.

LOL! Agreed! As words go, for me it’s right up there with “placenta” in terms of ickiness.

As for the perfume itself…not sure how I feel about the spicy/fresh combination. Could be good? Maybe? (A little afraid of anything that does kumquat and vetiver at the same time.)

Yup, total agreement here. Pupa? as in larva, bugs, squishy wormy things and too close sounding to Poopa ? Pretty darn low on the “appeal-o-meter” . ( And this from a person who has raised plenty of butterflies from the wiggly, eat your plants phase thru the fly away stage. )

I think (someone once told me) that Pupa means “doll” in Italian. Does anyone know if that’s correct?

Well I just looked it up online and it does mean “Doll” maybe that’s what they’re going for instead of caterpiller larva…

that’s funny! But you’ve got to love those 15 & 50 ml sizes. So many bottles are like vats! The 15 sounds great, I wish more lines would make that size.

Agree…30 ml is becoming more common, hope 15 ml is next!

Exactly. The small is great for a purse, the metal shape is great, too; though I can’t quite see from the picture whether it has a secure cap. I like the idea of a light spicy fragrance; love spice, and the ginger sounds appealing to me. I just tried Piper nigrum by Villoresi; while interesting, it really emphasized cool-feeling spices like pepper and mint.

I wish they would make BIGGER Bottles… Like the Les Exclusifs de Chanel or the BIG Private Blend Tom Ford Bottles!!!!! I go through fragrance like most people go through Toothpaste! so i would welcome Bigger and BIGGER Bottles Gladly! Give me a Big Hulking Honking piece of Glass filled to overflowing with a Lovely scent, Like Ck One or Eau De Cartier or Bvlgari Au The Vert…. those come in some WHOPPER Sizes and more should! Wish Jo Malone would do Bigger Bottles!!!!

Ok, so no one’s going to comment on how silly the bottle is? Really? It has to be me?

I can’t figure the bottle out…..is it handcuffed?? and has a bow? why is it chained? too confusing. It looks like they couldn’t decide and threw some odds and ends together.

HA! Luckily, I think Daisy said everything I was going to say. Well, that and: maybe the ribbon is part of the Nina Ricci trend of having your power symbolized by your fragrance, which is symbolized by your ribbon. (Or whatever wacky thing the ad said–my memory is a little shoddy, and I’m too lazy to go back and read it again.)

LOL … agree with Miss Kitty, the bottle kind of looks like they had too many ideas and couldn’t decide on one, so they went with all of them. The notes do sound appealing to me, though …

Pupa makes clever and cute makeup compacts with lots of trick compartments. I have a stylized angel whose spherical body (a mere four inches in diameter) opens at its “equator” to reveal a mirror and several makeup trays that swing out for access– lipglosses, blushers, eye shadows, brushes and brow pencil, all in cheerful pastels to suit a fair complexion. I gave a devil version with stronger, deeper colors to my friend the dramatic brunette.

Ah, maybe I’m just not familiar with their design style, then, and that’s why the bottle appears odd. Sounds fun!

It’s too bad the name sounds so wrong to English-speakers, even when pronounced properly (pooh-pah, not pyoo-pa). “Doll” is the real meaning, and it suits their style, which is definitely fun and ingenious too.
Besides the angel I still have a Pupa eye-makeup kit my mother gave me in high school. A four-inch-long flattened cylinder, one inch wide at maximum, yet it holds a mirror, three shadows, brow powder, eye liner, and cake mascara, with all the requisite brushes–some good engineering going on there. Nice black&white op-art exterior too. Fun to show off and to use, and it takes little more space than a pair of lipsticks.

Yes — I used to buy their makeup years ago, although now I can’t remember where.

The angel and devil came from Bloomingdale’s some years ago, but I haven’t checked there recently. Don’t know where my mother got the compact mentioned in my reply to Jill above. That was my first Pupa, a perfect little stocking-stuffer.

I’m glad they didn’t use *Larva*.
It look like an i.d. bracelet to me.
If Gold is the best, is Silver just supposed to be a contender?
    Bronze is coming up next.

For English speakers Pupa may not be appealing, but for latin languages speakers it is very cute. I never bought their products, but I always found them ingenious and having made a super choice with the brand name. The bottle is very typical for Italian design.

I think that bottle would appeal to young people in the US too…
