Costume National 21 ~ new fragrance

Posted by Robin on 12 January 2008 38 Comments

21 Costume National perfumeCostume National has launched 21, a new fragrance created in honor of their 21st anniversary as a fashion house:

21 plays with the purest ingredients to intoxicate the senses and leave you wanting more. Ennio Capasa has captured his favourite scents to reiterate the concept of luxurious simplicity that can be found within his ready-to-wear collections.

The (21) notes include bergamot, milk, orange blossoms, saffron, cumin, pepper, cashmere wood, royal jelly, moss, clary sage, patchouli, olibanum, amber, sandalwood, oudh wood, cedar, vetiver, labdanum, tonka bean, vanilla and musk.

Costume National 21 is available in 50 and 100 ml Eau de Parfum. (quote via interbrandservices, additional information via nxtbook, news-parfums, accademiadelprofumo.it)

Royal jelly! I think that's the first time I've ever seen that used as a fragrance note! I bought some at Whole Foods once, and it was some foul, stanky stuff.

I looked at the list of notes, then the words “the concept of luxurious simplicity”, then the notes, then the words…hey it doesn't quite match does it?…milk and royal jelly?! that give me goosebumps…

I'm a big fan of previous Costume National fragrances, so I'm looking forward to getting a hold of this. But I can't seem to find it anywhere online….any ideas as to where I locate “21”???

Not sure I've seen it in fragrance either, although have seen it in body products. Never smelled it, now I don't want to!

Made me think of Jean Paul Gaultier's Fleur de Male. Looking forward to trying 21!

Don't know that it is in the US yet — at least, I haven't seen it. It is for sale overseas (see the link for news-parfums above).

Geez, that sounds “thick” – they only forgot incense & myrrh… But I believe in Cappasa – he does one of the most independent, cool menswear lines around. Scent Intense I find is one of the most daring, original fragrances on the market. And like Scent this one sounds it could be unisex, doesn't it ;-)

You know, I didn't connect those dots. And going to forget about it as quickly as I can, LOL…that does sound rather disgusting.

I hope this doesn't smell like the living dead. What's up with the ad photo? Yikes! It looks like a corps or a ghost!

It does sound thick! And original. Let's hope it at least lives up to the “original” part!

LOL — true, but I do like that ad all the same. And perhaps I've washed it out even more by resizing it (?)

The milk note just does not sound like it goes with *any* of the others. I wonder if it's a translation error.

Don't think so — it has been reported as “milk” in 2 separate English sources, and “lait” in French sources. Don't know where the mistake could be? I think we're getting milk, or whatever chemical stands in for milky in perfume.

Fluer Du Male is like mega-extreme Orange Blossom explosion! I can't wear it in warm weather, it knocks me out. Haha.

Hmm, if you leave the milk away from the description, then I think there is a very interesting fragrance on it's way.. Beautiful woods for sure, good spices, sage and moss.. I want to try this one and the milk doesn't scare me at all, maybe it softens the scent a bit.

Royal Jelly I know from foodsupplements but for the rest I cannot imagine a scent with it.

If there is something to worry about then I worry about vanilla and tonka bean and hope that these are not too strongly present.

Hey it is Italian and does anybody know an Italian fragrance that is terrible?

Sounds like it's going to smell like a mix between coconut Thai curry and the omnipresent cumin waft in a typical Indian sweets shop.
…I have to at least try this.

    I like sugarcoated cuminseeds.

Coconut Thai curry…now I am really curious about this scent.

I don't like the fashion on the website, kind of like streetwear. Hope that the scent is not inspired by citylifemishmashof scents.

scent sounds neat, but gee, unfortunate choice of wardrobe for the ad. She looks like she ought to be at a Klan rally.

HAHA! I started to think the same thing, but after being forced to watch Aeon Flux with my 16-year old sister I thought it looked like a contrived (as though the movie weren't contrived in the first place) version of their futuristic costumes. The ad, in any case, does not reflect the perfume's ingredients. Ah, but I'm not in the advertising business. :)

Out of curiosity — and because I'm fairly new here — will this blog let us know when it and other perfumes from abroad make their debut in the US?

As soon as I see it for sale online in the US (I don't really report on in-person finds) it will appear in an “online fragrance shopping” post — I do those almost every day. But if you're in a huge rush, might be worth calling Barneys in New York. They carry CN online, but they aren't always quick about putting new scents on the website, and I wouldn't be surprised if that was where 21 landed first.

I live in Manhattan and work fairly close to Barney's, so perhaps I'll go in there and see what they've got.~Oooh, you shouldn't have suggested that! Barney's = death trap and Chandrahasa = broke broke broke! I might just bide my time until either you post about it or until ThePerfumedCourt.com pops up with a decant. Thanks for the info!

Oh , but I assumed that the ghostly appearance of the person in the ad was to highlight the milk note? (I can't stop beating up on that milk note.)
