What to wear with JAR Bolt of Lightning

Posted by Robin on 8 November 2007 22 Comments

Not perfume related, but vaguely apropos of my "luxury" rant inspired by Comme des Garçons Luxe Champaca:

Guerlain introduced KissKiss Gold and Diamonds, the first-ever $62,000 lipstick custom designed in France, adorned with 110g of solid 18-carat yellow gold and paved with a rain of 199 diamonds of 2.2 carats.

    *Faint*

$62,000? You'd have to take your muscly minders to the ladies' loo with you.

The lipstick doesn't match with the rest of my makeup collection.

I dream of a revolution in which money would be confiscated from people who don't know what to do with them and given to moi. (Grew up partially during communist regime, sometimes it shows :-D )

With you on that. If you can't think of a better way to spend $62,000, you ought not to be allowed to spend it.

A matching perfume to go with the lipstick would be Clive Christian, Imperial Majesty for only USD 215,000.00.

A very important is the question whether we like the perfume.

Would they give free samples ?

That is just a luxury bottle of Clive Christian no. 1, and yes, you can get samples! I don't love it but it's a nice enough scent.

Just joking. But I am surprised that they give samples, didn't know that the bottle made it such an expensive perfume. Did you really try it? Great, why not!

Tried to imagine what I could do for 62,000 USD and the list is long, very long.

Giving away this amount of money to people or animals who really need it, would give me the best feeling of all.

Well, now we definitely have “luxury” defined. For anyone buying this lipstick, CDG Luxe would pretty much be the equivalent of Calgon Body Mist from Walgreens.

Feeling very “Madame Defarge” right now… excuse me while I sharpen my guillotine.

This is the kind of thing that makes me feel (unjustly) that the enjoyment of perfume and other non-essentials is somehow morally bankrupt. It seems to taint my purchase of a $20 bottle of Estee Lauder, for crying out loud, and that's just not fair. I agree that anyone who has that kind of money to spend – no, this isn't spending, this is what they used to call blowing the money – should give it to Colombina, since I am sure she would do far better things with it. The only thing that could redeem this in my eyes would be if we were given assurances that all the excess money (which would come to about $60,000 or so, right ?) would go to something like AIDS research or the Nature Conservancy or some other worthwhile cause.

    Rant over! :-)

Hey, why Columbina and not me, LOL??

So agree w/ your general point though. I refuse to let it taint my own measly purchases, but it does leave a very bad taste in the mouth.

The CC scents are not so very expensive in the regular bottles. Not cheap, mind you, but you can buy a coffret of all 3 CC scents for around $300. Don't love any of them myself, but they are nicely done I guess.

One would think that the colours would be bespoke and not available to the general public, like some of the Haute Parfumerie fragrances. What happens when the refills are discontinued? I wonder how much they are so that we can get an idea of how much the case is worth (?).

Thanks, Robin, for including this non-fragrance item in the blog.

The article says “15 customizable shades” — not sure what that means. If it is custom color, perhaps there are 15 base shades you start with? Whatever. If you had 62,000 to blow on the case, presumably you could pay Guerlain to make custom refills for the rest of your life, right?

I have to laugh at myself. When I first read the article, I thought they were saying that the 18 k gold and the diamonds were within the lipstick itself. And all I could think of was how uncomfortable and probably unhealthy that would be. LOL

Things like this are a healthy reminder of one of the reasons sumptuary laws were established: to keep the poorer masses from being so disgusted at the conspicuous consumption of the wealthy few that they revolted and brought down society altogether.
