The study found African elephants reacted with fear when they detected the scent of garments previously worn by men of the Maasai tribe.

University of Manchester researchers found three of the oils, usually used in aromatherapy, destroyed MRSA and E.coli bacteria in two minutes.
— From Aromatherapy oils 'kill superbug', also at the BBC. But before you go looking, they won't say which oils. With thanks to Pia for the link!
It hits you like Wladimir Klitschko’s right hook and smells like his boxing shorts after 10 rounds.
— Chandler Burr on Yves Saint Laurent Kouros, in Meow Mix in today's New York Times.
Great Chandler Burr article, made me laugh out loud! But I'd be interested to know if the perfumer was working with real civet: isn't civet, like musk, pretty much all synthetic these days? But the way he talked about it made it sound as though it were the real thing, straight from the cat's anal gland. Ha ha.
Most but not all civet is synthetic. I would think at a perfumery school, you'd get the chance to smell the real thing, but just guessing!
I think I remember reading somewhere that both eucalyptus and lavender oils can actually kill bacteria in your nose. Maybe they're more potent than previously thought…?
Loved Burr's article. I can't believe they were scared by a little civet. Tsk tsk tsk. 😀
Could the consultant from the article perhaps be Vika?
Aha — and I can believe it of either, they actually *smell* antiseptic, don't they?
Hoping he exaggerated their reactions for comic effect!
No, she is not a consultant — she works for IFF. And she would never be shocked at the scent of civet!
