I didn't realize it was coming out so soon in Europe! I can't wait for it to come here! =) I can't wait to hear reviews on the fragrances that are coming out for the movie too! =)
I sort of can't wait, LOL…I am going to wait to hear more detailed reviews. If it is just too grossly true to the book, I'm not sure I'll be able to stand to see it.
I loved the book so I'm looking forward to seeing this film. I read the article in the Evening Standard last week (it was a huge double-page spread) and it sounds great. They showed Run Lola Run again three nights ago on the TV (I think they are preparing us for the film already; that's what they usually do here), and again I thought it was a wonderful film. The cast of Perfume is superb. It should be fantastic. And I'm not squeamish…
The reviews aren't exactly glowing, but it is a great cast and hopefully will be worth seeing. I *am* squeamish though…
Oh no! What did they say was wrong with the film. đ
J, from the Guardian:
But although German film critics praised the costumes and acting, many argued that the film fell short of conveying the sense of smell. The daily SĂŒddeutsche Zeitung said it did not match up to the book and “in the end failed to emerge as the orgasm of a film it wanted to be”. Meanwhile, Die Zeit weekly ridiculed the film as “big nose theatre”, saying it rather obviously tried to convey smell through close-up shots of the protagonist's nose – of which there were no less than 27.
Oops, sorry, R, reacted to your post and didn't see your note about reviews.
That's what I said (on MUA, in fact) would happen when I first heard they were making a film. Everyone kept saying it would make a wonderful film but I knew that the plot was the least interesting element in it and a film would never convey 'smell' ('close-ups of noses' LOL!). I was finally persuaded it would be ok and when I saw who the director and the cast were I thought it might turn out to be wonderful. Looks like my misgivings weren't misplaced after all.
The reviews are not uniformly bad, though. And it has Rickman. I'll sit through almost anything to watch Rickman, LOL…
