The latest shopping report

Posted by Robin on 15 February 2005 15 Comments

TJ Maxx has the usual this week, plus: Shalimar Eau de Cologne, Nina Ricci L'Air du Temps, and Boucheron Initial. They also had lots of Avalon Organics Lemon Verbena bath products.

Forgot to mention last week the beautiful Chanel coffret I saw at Neiman Marcus: a trio of 7.5 ml bottles of the parfums from the Rue de Cambon collection (Cuir de Russie, Bois des Iles, Gardénia), all created by Ernest Beaux. A mere $150. No, you cannot try them on (I would love to try the Bois des Iles in parfum). Correction: Beth reminds me that this was $300, not $150. Thats a nice hunk of change.

Fragonard has a special offer on their new cherry blossom scent Cerisiers en Fleurs: a 200 ml Eau de Toilette, Bath Gel, and soap for 36 euros.

Everything by Parfums Visari is marked down at beautyhabit. And they now carry Les Bains du Marais...or has it been there for ages and I missed it?

A few Calypso soaps and candles are on sale at beautysak.

Beautycafe has a few bottles each of L'Artisan Orchidee Blanche and Navegar, both hard to come by in the US. They also have some of the coffret sets: Mood Swings, Les Epices, and the Men's trio.

You know, I got a Chanel SA to let me at her secret Bois des Iles parfum sample. Ha! She pretended there wasn't one. (This was at the Chanel boutique at 57th St.) I frowned and pouted and said, “I often very much prefer the parfum, but it is not the kind of thing I would want to buy without trying it.” Then lo, she turned, opened a small cabinet, and brought out a tester bottle of Bois des Iles parfum. Ha ha! It was gloriously woody, but I actually prefer the EdT.

You are so lucky, my friend and I were given a firm “no” when we asked if it was possible to sample. I have also heard that that many people prefer the EdT, but I would sure love to try the parfum.

Do we know if Initial by Boucheron has been discontinued?

M, I don't know. I wouldn't assume it is discontinued just because it is at TJMaxx. Shalimar certainly isn't discontinued.

I tried looking at the (silly) Boucheron website and found out *nothing*.

R, I was in N-M right before Xmas and was told by a SA (who was pushing some other juice) that Initial was discontinued. Have no idea if this was true; I am just stirring the pot! :~D

Well, she may have been right, but I think SAs are often told by distributors that something is discontinued when really they just mean they aren't going to carry it any longer. The Boucheron website does not have any contact links :-(

I'm pretty sure the Rue Cambon fragrances were $300. There was a different set for $150.

You're kidding! Wow, I remembered it was expensive but I guess I couldn't process $300. I think you're right though, I confused it with the other set that had Coco & a bunch of others. Will fix that on the post!

Boucheron Initial is showing up in parfum form at the TJMaxx stores near here.

Also spotted yesterday, Murmure by VanCleef & Arpels. I caved on the Zita, only because the box was open and I got to take a sniff. Lovely! And I don't usually care for rose fragrances (unless they are heavily accented with violet).

I will report any other unusual perfume sightings at the Maxx as I find them.

P, I have been lurking the aisles at TJMaxx looking for that darn Zita. It sounds nice. We'll probably get some eventually, we got Sha & the Borsari sets about 2 months after everyone else.

Do you know if the Zita is discontinued?

I loathe designer/retail/boutique websites that don't direct customers properly! The whole, avant-garde online art mission is an honorable one, I'm sure. but at least tell us where we can find your stuff and what you're actually selling!!!

Ok, Nina Ricci “L'air du temps”. I remember smelling an older version of my grandmother's and it was richer, with the carnation more prominent. The newer version I smelled some time ago was intensely powdery, with much of the carnation hidden. A little “much” for me. It's closer to the drugstore version of “Heavenscent”.

I prefer the carnation in this to Borsari' carnation fragrance, however. While lovely, Borsari's version must be worn in very small doses or the scent evolves into something oily.

I've definately had to talk myself back into sanity, while considering purchasing the actual perfume version of scents. I've eyed some that hung in the $350.00 range and I had to distract myself until the craving went away ;). I try to remind myself that $350.00 is half a month's rent for most people.

If you love carnation, do try Floris Malmaison, it is gorgeous although I don't wear carnation myself.
