Like diamonds? Like Chanel No. 5? This lemming is for you. From the No. 5 jewelry collection at Chanel, celebrating the 100th anniversary of Chanel No. 5, the 55.55 necklace in diamonds and white gold. It is called the 55.55 necklace because that's the carat weight of the emerald-cut diamond in the center. No, it's not for sale, but it will apparently be exhibited from time to time. (Next week I'll post some of the pieces you can buy, if you can afford them.)

I do this thing where I want to buy beautiful “occasion” dresses because they are beautiful pieces of fashion/artwork, but then I live a classically low-key, PNW lifestyle in which even folks going to the opera are likely to just put on jeans and a clean button-down shirt.
If I were a bazillionaire and could afford beautiful jewelry, I fear that impulse would only get worse. I think this necklace is gorgeous, but truly, no one is inviting me to the Oscar’s anytime soon! And if it were mine, it would live in a vault the other 365.5 days of the year (which I suspect is what’s going to happen to it, in any case).
I do wonder how often it will be displayed!
I saw the Hope diamond at the Smithsonian, me and about a thousand people all squished next to each other (an image that makes me shudder now in our COVID world!). Maybe we’ll be lucky, and it will join a collection like that for a while.
LOL!
I remember when I moved to Portland and went to the Oregon Symphony for the first time- I dressed as if I was going to Lincoln Center! DVF dress, jewelry, heels! My date was dressed in jeans, cowboy boots and a leather jacket!
If I had Bezos money I would wear this JUST BECAUSE.
We really can be excessively casual around here! My brother is an opera singer, so I see a lot of opera, and I’m always torn about how to dress. Usually I dress “up,” because it is an excuse to wear one of those dresses I never get to wear otherwise, but sometimes it’s nice to know I can get away with something more casual when I’m not in the mood.
If you had Bezos money, you would look FABULOUS!
Well, I’d give him a pass because of the cowboy hat, but otherwise! It is nice when men dress up, especially.
Year ago I went to the tiara exhibit at the V&A in London. Wistful sigh for both the items and the city. Anyway, I did not know that they can can be switched over to necklaces and back again! Super-practical, and therefore very PNW, I say…
LOL! I like that rationalization. I would TOTALLY attend a tiara exhibit! When I was a very strapped-for-cash college student, I went to Niemen Marcus with some college buddies, and we were wistfully looking at fancy things. The SA at the jewelry counter let us try on a tiara–No idea what value it was, I didn’t peak at the price, but it was certainly many thousands of dollars of diamonds on our heads!
I once worked for a very high end jewelry store. I was an assistant buyer of giftware. During the holidays and for a big local ball we’d bring in lots of extra pieces. I would sit at my desk, working my computer but trying on emeralds, rubies and diamonds. I once called my husband and told him that I was currently wearing half a million. He just said, don’t get used to it. LOL, it was a fun job.
That does sound like so much fun! Playing dress up for grown-ups.
What a great SA! Sounds like so much fun.
