From Aftelier, pomanders in any of the brand's fragrances: "Our modern interpretation of a medieval pomander: an amulet that people carried with them, filled with sweet-smelling aromas to brighten their day. Our Perfume Pomander kit contains an elegant dropper-bottle of eau de parfum, 3 felt balls and a silk carrying pouch. Put 5 drops of the perfume on a felt ball and carry it in its pouch or your pocket. Touch and smell the felt ball whenever you want to feel soothed and uplifted. You can also simply wear the perfume on your skin." Shown is the new Violet Ambrosia, $60.

I have to laugh – hajusuuri recommended to me felting my cats’ fur to make scented pomanders this spring and, hahah, though I, why not?

This will NOT fit in my pocket! I haven’t figured out what to scent them with yet.
Impressive!
Impressive says it all! ?
Wow.
WOW! That is a LOT of fur! And better for your kitty’s system to not ingest all that hair!
They are HUGE!
Hmm? $60? Cotton ball, practically free. Pom Pom from Joannes Fabric if you want to be fancy, about 5 cents.
So $60 for the tiny perfume with dropper. Still seems overpriced.
It is not cheap, but one of her natural scents on a felted wool ball in a silk pouch is more appealing to me than spraying something random on a pom pom from joanne’s. To each his own!
(I am not going to buy these, but I have bought her fragrances before, and thought they were worth every penny.)
Oh I’m addicted to her Ancient Resins so I can’t say I haven’t shelled out the $$ ?
🙂
In the Before Times, I was part of a local SCA group, and I made various potions for demostrations. One category was medieval pomanders, and they are so fun to make! You can easily spend $60( if not more!) on the key components (various oils, waxes and whole spices- plus fruit, like quince)
Of course you can take your Aftelier fragrance, spray or dab into a wool or cotton ball, and place into a second hand locket. But I like the idea as a gift, especially with the horrifying symptom of Covid (temporarily) taking away the sense of smell. Being able to smell ‘good humors’ is a modern take on a medieval concept.
I gave a short presentation once to a college class on “real” historical living. Telling them about the general stench of life was always hilarious and led to some fun discussions on general tolerance of smells.
Ha!
Yes- I mean, in major cities around the globe, up until the early 1900s, streets would be covered in animal waste. Deodorants were not a thing, and even daily bathing in the tropics were done with oils and not soap. Oy!
Yup! Add in backyard privies, even in the city. Waste/garbage dumped in street. Animals kept nearby.
I showed them a chamber pot and they said “no way”! ?
These were HS history students and they were both fascinated and horribly appalled. It was fun.
College course HS students. They got college credit for the class. I was being confusing.
If only they’d all eaten a diet of marzipan!*

I ordered one of these in Violet Ambrosia and it just arrived today. I didn’t necessarily care about the felt balls or the carrying pouch, but I do like the dropper bottle, and I like the 6 mL size. Sample vials are not always enough, but I don’t really want to spring for very many FBs any more.
