Some of us are still stuck at home, and some of us are freer to move about, but with fewer places to go. Either way, if you're watching more tv during the Covid-19 pandemic, you're not alone! So as with the reading poll, we're adding extra viewing polls — if you're going to watch, it might as well be something good. (And we'll cover audio entertainment, like podcasts, in an upcoming poll.) So do tell us...
...what fragrance you're wearing today?
...any great tv shows or movies you've discovered recently, and/or
...anything else fun you've been streaming to stay occupied (exercise videos? anything),
Or, as always, just talk about something else...
Note: shown is the Samsung Frame television.
I’m commando right now but last night I wore Aftelier Patchouli Spice body oil. I got samples of all three available and really like them all. Does anyone have a recommendation for other scented body oils? I have a couple of J.R. Watkins dry body oils but I’m always looking for more options.
The Tauer oils are very nice. I like Amber Flush and Rose Delight. I also recommend Aftelier Ancient Resins. All are dry oils and they can be worn by themselves or layered with other perfumes.
Ancient Resins is a necessity in my house! It is just lovely and soothing. Mandy also does it in balm form now and order a sample of the frankincense tea too!
I didn’t know about the balm and the frankincense tea. I need to try them very soon. Thanks for the info!
I put this on before bed every night, it goes with my “I am safe while I sleep and I will awake up tomorrow ready to make the world a better place” affirmation…
This is lovely. I will gently borrow it for tonight.
+1.
I am also addicted to her Jasmine face elixir!
Also recommend Tauer scents, particularly the rose. I also like the Caudelie body oil–light jasmine scent.
If you like the scent of it, Nuxe Huile Prodigieuse is pretty great — easily available and not outrageously expensive. It is *very* scented, though: that beachy ylang scent plus toasted marshmallows. I don’t know that I’d use it on my face, but for winter dry skin it’s a good product because it sinks in almost instantly so it doesn’t leave a greasy slick but still does the job.
Really, though: so heavily scented you could use it as a perfume. I have a couple of drops on right now and if I were wearing another scent it would be a duel to the death and Nuxe would probably win. I like the scent very much, but try before you buy.
I like the Nuxe, too, pyramus. I had the Caudalie Huile Divine but sadly in such a large bottle that it went bad before I could finish it. I used to wear Premier Figuier dry oil to bed, but that has been discontinued for many years.
I love that big bottle of Huile Divine but you do have to be in a committed relationship!
It is luxurious.
I have the Premier FIguier and Mure et Musc body oils, they are so light and fragrant, perfect for bed time.
I’m a fan of Nuxe oil but I prefer it after a shower and find the square-ish glass bottle to get very slippery and precarious to use.
I really like the Ouai Rose Hair and Body Oil. My biggest body products splurge ever was the Manifest Body Oil from Provision Scents – it was expensive, but it is such a gorgeous incense hug. I will definitely replace it when I run out. By Rosie Jane sent me a large sample of one of their body oils and it was really nice.
I second and third the Tauer and Aftelier oils. Tauer’s Wowilla oil is wonderful if you like vanilla. I also like Ahava’s Mandarin & Cedarwood dry oil.
Neutrogena sesame oil is nice, too, for a less pricey pick. I think there are a couple of scents to choose from.
I like the Neutrogena oil, I get the unscented version so it doesn’t fight with my fragrance. Dr. Teals’ lavender bath oil is very nice, and cheap! In winter, I sometimes use a frankincense and myrrh baby oil which smells heavenly. You can get it at Target and CVS, and online, the brand is Shea Moisture.
Another vote for Tauer’s Wowilla. Rituals also has some very reasonably priced, good smelling ones, though I can never remember what name goes with what scent.
The Yves Rocher body oils are nice and inexpensive.
I’ll have to check those out! I get their mailers sometimes.
All the Weleda body oils are really nice and reasonably priced. I’m a big fan of the Sea Buckthorn (creamsicle scent).
I recommend making them, using your favorite perfume(s)!
How did this start? I received a sample of body oil by Diptyque. The scent wasn’t something I would have chosen but good gosh, the luxuriousness of it! And it felt so good to be so kind that the scent really grew on me!
And from there, I wondered about making my own, after researching and finding that so many perfume oils were expensive and that were limited scents that would clash with perfume.
So far, every perfume I’ve made into oil has made me love it more. I use pretty glass dropper bottles with an ombré effect, one color each. The sound of the clinking of the dropper glass hitting the edge is now associated with this self kindness and luxury— the sound is so nice!
Seconding Nuxe oil, have used it for years (there is now a perume Nuxe Prodigieux Le Parfum much better than Terracotta imo).
I love l’Occitane almond supple skin oil. Also seconding Tauer (especially the rose one), Ancient Resins, Nuxe, and making it yourself 🙂 I just filtered some calendula lavender vanilla oil that has been steeping away in a closet for a few months, and it is super luxurious.
I’ve done this steeping in oil with coffee grounds, just because there aren’t very many genuine coffee scents out there. It works a treat!
I have used Aveda Composition Oils.Shampure is my favorite followed by Beautifying.
I love Shampure Composition Oil! Just have a small bottle of it, but it is so soothing.
I adore Tauer’s body oils, I have Amber Flash and Wowwilla Body oils – their gorgeous!
Ok it’s time to try Wowzilla!
What is the Rose like? Fresh? Spicy? Soft? Lemony?
Very cold and sunny day. I am in Donna Karan Black Cashmere and getting ready for my baby nieces’ baptism at the church in a couple of hours. We will quickly gather for coffee and pastries at my sister’s place after the ceremony. Family and friends were not invited at all due to Covid, so it will be my younger sister, my nephew, mom and me only. Looking forward to a nice family time.
Happy weekend, everyone! ?
Have a lovely time pl67!
Thank you, Apsara!
What a happy occasion! I hope you have a wonderful time. Stay warm!
Thank you, Sistine! We had a very nice time!
Have a nice family gathering, things will get worse soon, I fear
Thank you Tannina! Things are getting worse here as days pass. We don’t know when we will see each other again.
Have a wonderful time with your family!
Thank you, Lillyjo! The girls are so lovely! We all had fun with them!
Sounds wonderful, M.! Have a lovely time. ?????????????♀️????
Thank you, L! It was very wonderful! ???♀️?♂️???
Wonderful, precious moment, have a lovely time with your family.
Thank you, Aurora! Unforgettable moments for sure! We took tons of photos!
Hope you have a wonderful time with your family.
Thank you, Gail! We enjoyed a lot!
How wonderful! I hope everything was as close to perfect as possible.
Thank you! Despite all the Covid restrictions, everything was beautiful!
Congratulations! I hope it was perfect.
Thank you, AngelaB! It couldn’t be better!
Ahhhh 10 hours sleep. And nothing on calendar today.
I had 60 dollars in rewards at nordies so got a small bub of JM orange bitters. I think I will wear it a lot this winter but kept it wrapped just in case I actually see anyone I’ll have a gift ready.
Going to watch Chicago Seven on Netflix I think. At least start it.
Housecleaning laundry and maybe an online class today. And a walk. The fog is low and thick this morning.
Post shower some le labo tea noir.
Jealous of your 10 hours, apsara!
Have been enjoying PBS’ new potboiler Flesh and Blood–really no character development, but fun to watch.
Comedy Central’s been showing Schitt’s Creek from the beginning on Friday nights, so started watching that to see what all the fuss is about. Agree with those who say it gets progressively better.
Also watching Fargo. The season with Jesse Plemons and Kirsten Dunst was my favorite, but this one’s fine so far, and love Tim Olyphant providing comic relief.
Just applied Vivacious to add cheer to this gloomy morning.
I also found that Schitt’s Creek gets progressively better. The show was mentioned more than once on NPR’s Pop Culture Happy Hour, but it took me more than one try to get into it. In the end, I found it just delightful.
I third it. I’m not big into comedies but it’s a very nice comic reprieve from 2020!
4th. Really glad Jessica convinced me to give it a shot.
Thanks for the reminder about Fargo. Somehow lost track of season two, and never watched season one.
You smell good and how many Schitt’s creek episodes before it gets better? 🙂 We watched the pilot and were really underwhelmed, and I like Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara (Best in Show!).
Same. I found the pilot practically unwatchable and like you find Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara great. I tried the second episode then gave up.
Ha, am going to say it started being funnier from episode 5 on after!
Yes…and 2nd season better than 1st.
Tim Olyphant? Tim Olyphant? My ears perk up immediately. Can I watch this season and follow along if I’ve never seen any other seasons?
Haven’t been watching much tv lately as it’s mostly covid-centered. Poland is very close to reaching 10k of daily new cases and I have a hunch we might be going into lockdown 2.0 by the time November comes. But I don’t want to be pessimistic so let’s see.
I was never a gym person and since 2020 I’ve been doing a lot of home exercises so I can recommend videos at Popsugar Fitness, AllBlancTV and dance workouts by Mike Peele – all on YouTube.
I’m wearing Mon Ame from the brand 1907 today.
I luckily bought a Crosstrainer two years ago, so I am set for a possible lockdown. And I started biking to work two days a week. Maybe I will take a look at these videos
I’ve been a gym rat for decades, I miss my spin class terribly.
I agree, Popsugar Fitness is great. I’d add, Jessica Smith TV and Blogilates are also quite good.
Sampling Jorum scents today.
We’ve been watching Fargo on TV. And of course, The Simpsons.
My new habit, though, is TCM. Most days I look at their schedule online and decide if there’s anything I’d like to see — then I go set up the DVR, and we watch the movies when we like. Last night we watched ‘The Talk of the Town’ from 1942 (Cary Grant!!). The night before, it was ‘Designing Woman’ (Lauren Bacall and Gregory Peck). I quite enjoyed ‘Blithe Spirit’ too (Rex Harrison, and Margaret Rutherford as a hilarious Madame Arcati).
For exercise, I have dusted off my old DVDs. I have the usual aspirational pile of them, but the one I really use is Pilates for Dummies with Michelle Dozois.
Great idea to record TCM. I should do that. I live with my 85yo grandma, and modern scripted shows and movies are challenging for her to follow: jump cuts, multiple intersecting storylines, multiple timelines, etc.
As a result, if I am watching TV with her, it’s usually reality TV (GBBO, design shows) or documentaries.
I love these old movies, sadly tcm is not available in Germany
I love TCM and watch old movies far more than anything else. Designing Woman is such a luscious visual treat – that apartment! those clothes! And Gregory Peck 🙂
OMG, her clothes were amazing in that movie!!!
I’m rewatching the 1990s TV series Hamish MacBeth on Amazon Prime. I’d go out of my mind living in a town so small, where everyone knows everyone else’s business (and there is a surprising amount of crime), but I don’t mind watching other people do it.
Wearing, as I have said above, a little Nuxe Huile Prodigieuse as a scent, very sunshine-on-the-Côte-d’Azur, which will do nicely when it’s so cold and cloudy and rainy outside.
I liked Hamish MacBeth too.
Scent today: Lolita Lempicka Lolita Lempicka. My bottle dates back to the launch in ’97, which I believe dates it to my pre-rabbit hole days.
Viewing: just finished up Schitt’s Creek last night, which I loved. My daughter and I are currently watching Dead to Me. Jury’s out on that one, but it’s well done.
Reading: I dusted off Sharon Kay Penman’s When Christ and His Saints Slept. It’s been a relief to open up a readable book. My reading choices lately have mostly hit Eh, Never Mind status.
Glad to see another Schitt’s Creek fan.
SOTD!Rentless from Lush.I get this coca-cola or dr pepper vibe from it,and I love it!One of those where I inhale deeeeeply whenever I sniff myself!Haha!
You guys must check out My Octopus Teacher on Netflix.Shot in the coastal waters of South Africa, featuring fabulous places and scenery that I have visited myself.
Happy Weekend!
XO
Yes! My Octopus Teacher is fantastic. The title is terrible, if inelegantly accurate. I’ve recommended it to so many people and everyone has loved it. My aunt cried! Amazing photography.
Here is a radio/podcast interview with the filmmaker that just aired. I haven’t listened to it yet: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9mZWVkcy5ucHIub3JnLzM4MTQ0NDkwOC9wb2RjYXN0LnhtbA/episode/ZDBjYTRhM2YtOTUyNS00ZjhhLWJiODUtY2Y3NDgwNzA1ZDU0?hl=en&ved=2ahUKEwjfz7O0zbnsAhWSHDQIHXpdDlwQieUEegQIGhAF&ep=6
Thanks for the link!✌??
I also heard that interview and watched the show last night. It was just fantastic and I loved the guy. What a tale of friendship. It made me resolve never to eat octopus again. She was so smart and full of character. The visuals were astounding.
Ooo! I will add that to my list!
?????
My Octopus Teacher was lovely. Beautifully filmed and I’d never have guessed I would get so attached to an octopus!
Yes!?
Rentless does smell like Coca-Cola, doesn’t it? They say patchouli, grapefruit, and tonka (but there’s spice in there as well), and cola is primarily cinnamon, lemon-lime, and vanilla, so there’s some….not overlap, exactly, but parallelism.
You summed it up perfectly!I’ve enjoyed it so much, even in today’s exhaustive heat!
?✌?
All I’ve watched since March has been live school board meetings and the Monterrey Bay Sea Otter Cam, so I have no viewing recommendations.
Wearing Lake today (by Rosie Jane) – it’s so nice on a crisp fall day. Does anyone have any favorite pine fragrances to recommend? It’s a note I’ve really been craving lately.
I like AG Nuit Etoilee -iris and pine- and SL Fille en Aiguille – pine and incense. Kyoto also has pine to my nose and I like it, but not enough to buy a bottle.
I second Fille en Aiguilles, if you want to try Nuit Etoilée, go for the EdT, the EdP is much too amber… Sadly I got the EdP and do not like it at all
Konig from Yosh. Pine leather.
CBIHP Wild Hunt. Dirt and pine.
Dasein Winter and Winter Green.
ELdO Marquis de Sade is mostly pine on me.
Ineke Idyllwild.
Vagabond Prince Enchanted Forest
I’m a big fan of that sea otter cam! 🙂 It’s been especially cool seeing the foster mother otters with the orphaned juvenile otters. Otters seem like very bright and creative creatures. 🙂
Playing with samples this morning: Aqua Universalis (random pick from the deep catalog) and La Myrrhe (just got a sample in).
I’ve been working an insane amount (went maybe 5 weeks without a day off, finally has my first last weekend), so TV has been limited.
As mentioned in an earlier comment, I live with my 85yo grandma who has a hard time following modern scripted shows. Lately we’ve been enjoying Grand Designs, Cabins in the Wild, and the Great British Bake Off, all on Netflix.
When I am by myself, I like sci fi, horror, suspense, and comedy. Still have a couple seasons left of Schitt’s Creek. Love What We Do in the Shadows. I’m almost done with Ratched, which I’ve enjoyed but do not think shares any DNA with One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (which is fine, it’s its own thing). Just watched pilot for a new TWD flanker, though I fell off TWD in season 3 or 4.
Looking for a new scripted show to draw me in.
Have you tried Foyle’s War? It’s so good — it is about a chief of detectives in WWII England who has to solve crimes in the midst of all the chaos of the war. Foyle is a wonderful character — quiet, unassuming, deeply patriotic without being jingoist, highly ethical. You might enjoy watching it with your Gran! I watch it when I need to be reminded about decency, but it is truly entertaining and intriguing.
Thanks for the recommendation! I’ve seen the title but never watched. We’ll check it out.
LOVE LOVE LOVE Foyle’s War. Have seen the whole thing twice through and some day will watch it again.
I’ve been terrible at most things lately. I need a month long vacation. Mindlessly binge watching covers most of my latest pandemic habits.
So far, I’ve revisited Homeland, Top Chef Seasons 1-4, Dead to Me and Suits. I did watch the David Attenborough special and My Octopus Teacher. When my children were small we once spent an entire morning at a tidal pool feeding crabs to an octopus who was sitting under a rock. Later it started playing if we brought a stick closer to it. They truly are magical creatures. I wish people would stop eating them.
SOTD: Le Chevrefeuille
I love octopus, they are really intriguing! I can’t bring myself to eat them either. They are fascinating to watch!
Rewatching past seasons of Top Chef is extremely comforting. The early seasons feel a bit rough now, with such improvements in production values over the years. Season 1 is the only one I’ve never rewatched.
I’m watching GBBO and Song Exploder on Netflix and Ally McBeal on Prime, plus The Amazing Race and Dr. Jeff on TV. That octopus one sounds interesting.
Today I’m wearing Absolue pour le Soir.
GBBO is really weird this time round. Just as entertaining, but not the best group of bakers 🙂
I’m in Montale Chocolate Greedy today.
As far as TV is concerned, I’ve been watching Schitt’s Creek and loving it like so many others. If you’re on Instagram, try love.and.hisses, for adorable rescue kitten video. If you like food vids, try MenWithThePot. He cooks outside, in a gorgeous forest over an open fire, with (I think) a springer spaniel in the background. His ingredients and his knife are beautiful, and the videos are mesmerizing! They are shot from the perspective of the cook, which is a different spin.
I hope everyone has a lovely weekend. ?
Oh I am a long-time fan of Love and Hisses!
I’m pretty certain you were the one who told me about that account, and I thank you! ?
Will comment separately on the weekend poll, but wanted to comment real regarding the project yesterday! I participated but forgot to comment lol.
I wore Shalimar edt of course. I was always a perfume person but a few years back before the rabbit hole I was just wearing something I’d pass at the mall and thought smelled good. I’d ran out of my current perfume (pretty sure it was Burberry Brit) and started researching for whatever reason to see what I should get next. I feel into a rabbit hole of reading about perfumes which led me to ordering some samples. I don’t remember what all I ordered other than Shalimar and Angel haha. Anyway, that’s when I fell in love with Shalimar and have been wearing off and on since. And also when I basically just started getting out of control with the sniffing.
Ahh..Shalimar!
I first tested a vintage Royal Secret by Monteil, but was not too keen on it, switched to a vintage Shalimar EdT.
I am watching Chesapeak shores at the moment and will start the 3.season of Star trek discovery afterwards.
YES…looking forward to Discovery! We have to finish a few other things first.
I’m in Dzongkha today. It’s just so good. Definitely a contender for my annual birthday treat to myself in a few weeks.
I just watched Girls Girls Revolt on Amazon and loved it. It certainly renewed my gratitude for generations of women before me who bravely demanded opportunities illegally denied to them.
Good Girls Revolt looks interesting, wonder why it got cancelled so quickly?
PdN Vanille Tonka
TV Shows:
Apple TV:
Tehran
Defending Jacob (Its Dark, but Chris Evans is easy on the eyes)
Boys State
Dads ( a documentary by Ron Howard)
Stay Occupied
Reading!
Just finished The Nowhere by Chris Gill-a mystery fiction surrounding a boy Seb who is a closet gay living in the middle of “No where” in Australia. The book is a little hard to follow going back and fourth between time periods, but for anyone who likes a coming of age story take a look.
Elsa Morante Arturo’s Island, part of my immersion into Italian authors I read this one, another coming of age, translated my Goldstein who also does Ferrante’s books.
You smell wonderful. Considering our shared love of Shalimar, we may be scent cousins if not twins.
SOTD = Puredistance Rubikona
From a sample. Go read Lucas’ review in his blog. I could only come up with rich floral root beer (a compliment since I love root beer).
https://www.instagram.com/p/CGdC4O3hsTS/?igshid=1gefx5td2p5pz
TV and such, other than current events: right now, Food Network’s Beat Bobby Flay. Do note that even pre-COVID, I usually watch Food Network shows which I either DVR or watch via onDemand.
You nailed that picture! ?
Thank you dear!
Wearing Boyfriend Dry Oil and still a bit of Chergui. Cloudy and cool here. I’m grumpy from not sleeping well. Will get out for a walk soon.
I absolutely loved My Octopus Teacher – thanks to those who recommended it. Completely wonderful. We’ve also been watching Borgen, the Danish political drama which is fun and a bit of a break from US drama.
Isn’t Boyfriend dry oil great? I am almost through my bottle and not sure where to find another one.
I am wearing Dior Hypnotic Poison today. I am actually still in my pajamas and drinking my third cup of oolong tea. The last few weeks I have been helping my parents clean and organize their home, and I am wiped out right now.
My husband and I just finished watching Mind Hunter on Netflix and enjoyed it very much. I also thought AMC’s Quiz with Matthew Macfayden was really good.
I liked Mind Hunter a lot too.
Oud and Saffron Flower, from a sample that Hajusuuri sent along with the Lion split? I like it! It does have a bit of the “fancy of the moment” vibe to it.
TV shows: Hubs and I are enjoying “Episodes” with Matt LeBlanc (netflix). It’s about a British writer couple who get stuck in LA working on an American version of their British hit show with Matt LeBlanc as the unsuitable lead. I thought this was brand new, but it’s actually 10 years old. Comedy, with some very good writing in the dialogue and some classic physical comedy (I don’t mean cake in your face, but people entering/leaving the frame etc.).
If you speak German – we are fully taken by a Swiss documentary/show called “SRF Bi de Luet Wunderland” where the host just travels around Switzerland. 🙂 It’s in Swiss, so even German speakers will need the (German) subtitles.
Off to pick up a hopefully stylish, soft, fluffy and fragrant dog from the groomer!
That would be the Eric Buterbaugh! And the price is just as “fancy” ?. Glad you like it!
I liked Episodes too, and likewise we were very late to it — I think we watched it last year or the year before.
We don’t seem to watch things when they first come out (other than waiting with bated breath for each series of Stranger Things), and we’ve recently been watching Broadchurch, the British crime drama from a few years ago. We’re on to the third season and it’s still good.
I really enjoyed my perfume class yesterday. It was very much the same class I did six years ago, but I’d forgotten most of it, so that was just fine. I made my own perfume, which I’ll let settle a few weeks, and let you know what I think 🙂
Having spent yesterday at the class, today will be much more prosaic, with supermarket shopping and bathroom cleaning. That calls for the serenity of incense, so it’ll be Oaurzazate for the morning.
I liked Broadchurch a lot too for the great acting bit it did get weirder as it went along.
I hate to admit.. So much TV watching over the last 6 months!
Lately we’ve been watching Raised by Wolves, Breaking Bad (which dh somehow has never seen before). I’ve also been drawn to more educational fare. Strangely fascinating was a show about slime mold. Also Rick Steves Fascism in Europe which I think is brilliantly presented but oh so scary.
I used to watch news before work but have switched to short, beginner Tai Chi videos to wake up my mind and body. Much healthier and far more calming than the news!
Oh! I was very intrigued by Raised by Wolves but wasn’t tracking the start date. How is it? I have to figure out where/how to watch it, too. I’m so confused by the HBO vs HBO Max vs HBO Go. Every time the topic comes up, I google the answer, then promptly forget.
The Inspector Wexford series on youtube, the murders are not too gruesome and it’s a lot about life in a little town in England, and looks a little vintage, they are from the late 80’s or early 90’s I think.
Wearing my latest win Historiae Bouquet du Trianon, inspired by Marie- Antoinette, lovely green galbanum note and floral, the tuberose is very light, a bit of sweetness from beeswax, as you would expect, light and pretty, longevity really good so far, close sillage, didn’t know much about it but won a 3 quarter full bottle for £12.20 so Donatella would think it’s free.
Wearing
Your perfume sounds beautiful!
Thank you Lillyjo it really is, and the green nites make it fresh, not powdery at all which is what one would associate with historic perfumes. Supposedly it is based on old perfume formulas from the XVIIIth century but I looked up Fragrantica and some Bertrand Duchaufour magic was involved in it too.
OH, I read those Ruth Rendell books and did not know they’d made a series.
It’s quite a good series, not scary. Nice twists.
Thanks!
SotD = Poivre Samarcande
Last night I watched the movie Orlando, a movie (and book) I’ve enjoyed many times. Woolf’s approach to eternal themes – birth, death, family, gender, love, politics – is contemplative and, for me, very moving. The movie is similar in tone. The visuals are fascinating, as is Tilda Swinton.
I wanted to wear a scent that Orlando might have enjoyed. Poivre Samarcande would suit Orlando, I think. It would smell good on a man or a woman, and has woody notes with spice. The oak tree stands prominently within Orlando’s story, literally and figuratively, and Orlando travels from Britain to The East, from Occident to Orient, near the spice routes, where transformation occurs.
I agree – PS is perfect for Orlando!
I love Orlando! I’ve never seen the movie, but it’s one of my favorite books.
I saw Orlando way way way back in the day in the theater. It’s one of those movies that’s indelibly recorded in memory, all due to those amazing visuals and Tilda.
SOTM has been Nanadebary Bronze, for a haircut appointment and a foray into our local drugstore – was looking for Tilex shower spray (no luck there) and came home with two new nail polishes. Oh, and getting used to new post-cataract-surgery glasses. I see everything in such detail now, which is mostly great (but looking in the magnifying makeup mirror is still horrifying). ?
I assume you are looking for spray and walk away for the shower? If yes, you can try Clean Shower which I get at Target. Be warned though that it is scarce. Every time I go to Target (not often) but when I do, I always stop by the cleaning aisle and the last time I went a month ago, they had stock and I got 4 of them.
Yes, the spray and forget type. But what I really buy it for is the spray bottle – when I’ve used up the tilex, I can refill the bottle with a weak bleach solution. It keeps our grout clear of mold. The sprayer on the tilex brand is a good one – it holds up for about a year and then starts to break down and I have to go find a new one.
SOTD is a tiny bit of Pandora from a sample graciously provided by hajusuuri. There’s just another wear or 2 left of this beauty!
Like others I’ve been watching Schitt’s Creek; its the 2nd time through. Moira just cracks me up! It’s funnier this time because you know the characters now and their humor. Last year I watched Glow Up on Netflix, a reality show about people wanting to become makeup artists; there’s a new season on now so it should be mindless fun.
Pandora is very nice!
Wearing Tra la la from Penhaligon’s today. Is definitely perfect for the fall afternoon, knitting in the sunny guest room with the window cracked so the cool breeze wafts in. Just finished watching Over the Garden Wall with my husband, it’s on Apple TV. An absolutely charming Cartoon mini series. I’d only heard of it yesterday but apparently it’s well deserving of its fantastic reviews and ratings, and perfect for the Fall/spooky season. On date night this week we watched Enola Holmes, it was a quite enjoyable fun escapism movie. Speaking of I think I’ll continue the Fall/Fantasy theme and pull up Hedgehog in the Fog, it’s on YouTube, while I work on this sock. It’s a classic clay animation from Russia that I really like, very Wind in the Willows/Redwall/vibes. I’m also rereading the Lord of the Rings, for the first time since I read it as a kid. I got an anniversary edition with a readers companion that’s giving a lot mod insight and context for Tolkien’s work. Hanging out with Hobbits is a great escape from current events.
Love your suggestion about LOTR, I read and re-read it over and over in my youth and I have a lot of books about Tolkien and C.S. Lewis. The reader’s edition sounds great! And yes, hobbits would make a refreshing change of company these days.
I might have to check out Redwall Abbey. As a Wind in the Willows fan, I always thought it might compare unfavorably, but one of my nieces (who did not live near me) was obsessed with it. I was curious but never followed up. Just watched Hedgehog in the Fog and loved it! Thanks for the suggestions, InkyFeathers!
Your welcome! My brother and I loved the Redwall books in jr. hi/high school. I would get them whenever a school trip let us go to a big mall bookstore. I plan to reread them, and there are a couple I missed the first time around.
Today I wore Mechant Loup because I was reminded yesterday of when I first bought it. For TV recommendations I endorse Bordertown on Amazon/Acorn as well as Rebecka Martinsson. Very dark Nordic noir with blood, drugs, sex, and snow. Also Secret City on Netflix and A Place to Call Home on Acorn. Brilliant Australian dramas. I can’t get into American shows these days. Except I often watch old episodes of Perry Mason on MeTV, and did enjoy the new one with Matthew Rhys. Heck, I would watch him read the phone book!
Haved loved Matthew Rys since The Americans. Am too cheap to pay extra for HBO, so I hope the Perry Mason reboot turns up on Netflix or whatever at some point.
I’m wearing Poesies Thrushcross Grange today.Lovely fall pumpkin note scent.
I have been watching an eclectic mix on Amazon Prime and Kanopy.Finished the last season of Schitts Creek this week-made me so happy and sad it was the end. Also watched The Gloria’s,All In: The Fight For Democracy and RBG.Currently starting A Long Strange Trip-a Grateful Dead series which is very good.A DVD I got from the library was the Mr. Roger’s movie with Tom Hanks (A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood). It was a bit more intense than I expected, but really lovely.
I loved that movie too. Have you seen the documentary about Mr. Rogers?
Yes,I saw that before this film.He was such a good very human man.Love hearing from Mrs. Roger’s in the news lately.
Yes, Matthew Rhys again! I think I have told in here before that I used to live in Mr. Rogers’ neighborhood—literally. I was in grad school in Pittsburgh and had an apartment on the street near the public TV station where the show filmed. I often saw him parking his car and walking on down the shady street to go to work.
Today’s SOTD: Jo Malone Grapefruit, my last sample but fresh and crisp.
in an effort to stay minimally informed of what’s going on in the world (besides THAT), I have been sticking my nose in our local paper a bit more often recently. Honestly, I really don’t know why because it’s usually the same old gloom ‘n’ doom and does nothing for my anxiety/depression (I still refuse to watch CNN and the like). I’ll be very glad when the news gets back to “normal”, but I fear it will be a long time coming.
TV viewing: College volleyball season is upon us and thank goodness that the big Division 1 schools have commenced their seasons; i can record the ones that are broadcast on ESPN and watch. My own neighborhood D-3 school cancelled their season, so no live volleyball for me to attend. 🙁
Wearing Gallagher Wicked Good.
Great shows I’ve watched in the last few months: Catastrophe, Fleabag, Killing Eve
Looking forward to the new season of The Mandalorian. This is the way.
<=(⬤‿⬤)=>
Can’t wait for Mandalorian to come out!
I wore Dioressence today; it’s not vintage, but it is from 2012 so before some of the latest restrictions on ingredients. Really enjoying it! My husband and I went to a large botanical garden north of where we live, in some foothills, and just walked around in the beautiful weather. Today was our first day out of quarantine because one of our daughters who live with us had COVID-19. We are so thankful she seems to have fully recovered! Except her senses of taste and smell, which are weak at best. But fingers crossed that they recover too.
I don’t watch much TV except the Great British Baking Show and Chef’s Table, and I like to keep my husband company when he watches sports. But I’m excited about the upcoming streaming of “Death of a Salesman”, the revival with the late Brian Dennehy: https://www.playbill.com/article/death-of-a-salesman-revival-starring-tony-winner-brian-dennehy-will-stream-on-playbill. And Alvin Ailey Dance Theater is streaming many performances online; I think their upcoming season will be fully online: https://www.alvinailey.org/performances-tickets/ailey-all-access.
Happy weekend, everyone!
Has anyone been taking advantage of the arts now streaming online?
I keep reading about wonderful music events that streamed yesterday…but am really not trying hard enough to find them before they happen.
Today’s SOTD is Hermes Jour d’ Hermes, it’s gorgeous in the heat. I just wish it would last longer than four hours.
It’s another scorching SF day, we had plans to walk through Golden Gate park but it reached nearly 90 and decided against it. I walked nine miles yesterday (from my house to UCSF labs and back) and nearly fainted. Thank goodness there was some shade along the way.
Thrillers (Good but bloody or violent):
Banshee – set in rural Pennsylvania, drug runners, gem thieves, Amish rural characters have unfinished business. Surprise cameos by Ben Cross.
Ozark and Van Helsing, both are great but very dark (Van Helsing is bloody, which may not be everyone’s cup of tea).
The Son with Pierce Brosnan, it was quite good.
Food shows:
Chef Show, with Jon Favreau and Roy Choi is excellent, they have a great camaraderie and oh boy, the food!
Taste the Nation with chef host Padma Lakshmi is wonderful, she has a knack for putting people at ease.
Delicious Miss Brown is a wonderful Gullah Soul food cooking show with Kardea Brown as host. *Don’t watch if you’re on a diet.*
Period Pieces:
Beecham House – set in 19th century Deli, previous to British rule. Gorgeous scenery, romance, handsome lead actors, what’s not to love?
Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries – murder, suspense, and gorgeous wardrobes, set in 1920’sAustralia. The Miss Fisher’s gorgeous porcelain complexion will inspire you to wear SPF 100 sunscreen.
Comedies:
MASH – you know the drill.
Golden Girls – still funny after all these years.
Designing Women, still relevant, and hilarious.
Vicious – Graying Gay couple with a fractious relationship.
Young Ones – 1980’s BBC sitcom
Dark Comedies: Getting On – it’s not for everyone, but having worked in a nursing home, I found it quite funny.
MASH and Golden Girls are my most watched comedies of my lifetime. Also Soap!
Soap is great! I’d forgotten about that one!
During the mid nineties Comedy Central ran every episode and I recorded them on vhs, lol. I ALMOST threw them out during my last basement clean out, but couldn’t do it. Even though I don’t have a vcr.
Oh, we still have one for some reason!
Thanks for the tip about Delicious Miss Brown! I live in the South and I’m very fond of Gullah food, culture, history. One of our favorite areas to visit is South Carolina’s Lowcountry, where so much of it is rooted.
Old Herbaceous – Padma Lakshmi’s Taste The Nations Gullah episode is so beautifully done. I feel like she really relates to the folks whom she’s interviewing. It’s my favorite of all that I’ve seen so far.
Been wearing Givenchy Le Secret to empty the bottle and then I discovered I have 2 more! I do like this light fragrance. Givenchy III is my fall go-to, along with Aliage.
Has anybody watched “Top of the Lake”? It’s a very dark and twisty adult crime story.
Yes to Top of the Lake. I have to be in the mood for that kind of thing but it’s good.
Same — great show, don’t think I could watch it this year.
Sotd is Cafe Tuberosa.
I am actually watching less television than ever now. I’ve stopped watching the news, except for local, and that’s mostly for the weather. I did catch a trailer for an Adam Sandler Netflix Halloween movie, that I’m going to try and watch. Sometimes I catch The Walking Dead, but mostly I like the older comedies.
Totally agree about old comedies, the passage of time makes the settings so interesting, old telephones, car, interiors, so that they are real escapism on top of being funny. I listen to radio sitcoms everyday.
I am curious about your sotd, I first read about it on BdJ. Is it very floral?
The coffee is almost chocolate like on me, plus there is citrus. I get some floral, but I don’t find it dominate.
I would love to listen to a radio sitcom. I do listen to stand up comedy.
Thank you, chocolate-coffee sounds yummy, it’s very original but sometimes tuberose is difficult for me, although I love it mixed with other florals.
I got Eau de Gaga in the mail. Have it layered up with body shop fugi green tea lotion, and Elizabeth Arden green tea spray and deodorant. It’s fine but where is this violet? I’m keeping busy creating a fantasy husband. The guy from the LensCrafters commercial. The French guy. So far we have a nice 2 bedroom condo with intracoastal views. A trip to Bordeaux and he’s teaching me about how you don’t have to buy your wine at the Chevron station.
That’s hilarious! Where to next?
LOL – do keep us posted! I for one want to hear about the perfect French children and the Swedish au pair who will undoubtedly follow.
Now I have to go hunt down this LensCrafters commercial.
Love your fantasy life premise.
His name is Benjamin Garnier. Look, but no touch.
Yes, adhering to the girl code is important.
Oh BD, I just looked Benjamin up, he is cute! And all yours. 😉
I love Elizabeth Arden’s Green Tea, fleeting as it may be, it’s refreshing.
For boy crushes, my choice is Alex Krycek, from the X Files, played by Nicholas Lea.
Yes I’m dating myself here, but I do love a mysterious bad boy, and he fits the bill perfectly.
Mr. SmokeyToes is Mr. Reliable, so thankfully, I had the good sense to marry someone solid and kind hearted!
And he does the dishes and vacuums twice weekly, even the lamp shades. Nothing to complain about here. 😀
I’ve been enjoying my “rediscovery” of Black Cashmere, thanks to the CP. Can’t get enough.
Other than old movies, I’m rewatching Jim Gaffigan comedy specials, he never fails to make me laugh. And I like his stuff on YouTube with his kids. Also new to me on YouTube is the Holderness family. I’m in search of soothing and short videos are all I can manage some days.
Jim Gaffigan is hilarious, I will have to search out his YouTube stuff!
With five children, he has plenty of comedic material.
I need REM sleep, hence the cat and no children. 😀
SOTD EL Knowing, current version, just got it at TJX. I thought it was in the new blah bottles, but Knowing is one that still has the original style. First impression is the top has been redone to be brighter and fresher, but the middle picks up the familiar scent. I suspect it will not hang around like my older bottle. I wore that yesterday, and it stayed with me while I did some vigorous outside work for two hours. I am not much of a TV or movie person, but DH and I have been enjoying WoodSongs Old-Time Radio Hour on PBS. They have a spot for a young talent almost every show, and those kids are amazing. I recommend it to folk and country music fans especially.
Thanks — have been listening to much more radio than I used to!
I am wearing a sample of Henry Rose Jake’s House today. I like it ok but not sure full-bottle worthy. I seem to be a on sample binge lately – ordered a few from Luckyscent. My clothes and lipstick expenses are way down, since I wear scrubs most days to work and my lips never show.
We finally got our front yard landscaped after YEARS of begging my husband. I am looking out my front window now, very pleased. For the first time, I am not seeing a bunch of rubble and weeds. I finally convinced my husband that if we “do it ourselves” , I would probably be dead before my yard looked decent.
I watched most of Echo in The Canyon on Netflix last night. Sort of bittersweet to look at all that great music, so far in the past now.
I tend to watch British mysteries, finished Broadchurch and partway through Hinterland. I watch PBS mystery also – nothing new currently since we finished the latest episodes of Endeavour.
Oh congrats on your front yard, I would love to do that!
And liked all of those…Echo in the Canyon was great, loved Broadchurch and Hinterland, currently on season 6 of Endeavor.
Is Hinterland the Welsh one? I liked that.
Just got through with helping my dad clean out the chimney and need to hop in the shower. Wearing Estee Lauder Pleasures but will washing it off. Jake needs surgery to remove that fatty tumor. It’s breaking down and it’s better to have it removed before it gets worse. Started a Lilac Blossom candle today and thinking of wearing Lyric today.
When is Jake’s surgery? Wishing you and him well!
His surgery is the 28th of this month.
Rainy and gross today. I’m wearing and thunking Moulin rouge 1889. In my effort to work overtime, I’m on my tenth day of work. I’m getting frustrated and tired.
Hope you have a day off soon! It’s cool and sunny here.
My next scheduled day off is Friday. I’ve been working half days on my days off. I’m hoping to get the extra hours through Christmas. Afterwards though hours will be cut and I will look for a second part time job.
Glad you got the sun today ?
Your schedule sounds brutal.
Ouch. Here’s hoping you can find time to relax on the half days you don’t work and that your manager acknowledges your extra hours!
Last weekend I had my first 100% day off in 5 weeks. The good news us, when you do finally get a day off, each day feels like the equivalent of a whole week’s vacation!
It will feel nice for sure!
My husband and I just finished watching five seasons of Rita, a Danish comedy-drama (with subtitles) about a free-spirited middle aged teacher whose children are growing up and leaving the nest. Has anyone else seen it?
I’m wearing my last drops of Cuir d’Ange from a small decant and noticed that my Vetiver Tonka decant was almost empty. So I added Ambre Narguile and Osmanthe Yunnan and ordered a foursome of travel sprays from Hermes. At the beginning of Covid, I indulged myself with baking and then eating the treats. Now I’m indulging with perfume. Better for the waistline, worse for the wallet!
“Better for the waistline, worse for the wallet.” — so true!
I see next weekend is the Splitmeet and would love any hints or previews of perfumes my fragrant comrades might be splitting please!
??⁈
And I will post this question again tomorrow in case people are busy and miss it in the weekend thread too…I am kind of incorrigible. 😉
Here are my possible splits:
– Maison Lancome Santal Kardamon, ~ 20% discount, up to 50mLs
– Initio Side Effect and Initio Rehab, one I got at ~ 20% discount and the other with nice GWP so may offer them at a combined equivalent discount, up to 50mLs
– Parfums de Marly 10mL travel spray, Nordstrom Anniversary sale price, Delina (the original since I already have a full bottle) and Meliora
– Parfums de Marly Habdan, ~15% discount, up to 50mLs
– I am debating if I should get Eris Mxxx and / or Von Eusersdorf Myrrh, Patchouli, or Classic Patchouli….assuming these are all eligible for the Indigo 7th Anniversary Sale. Anyone looking for Papillon should check out the site!
Exciting! looking forward to getting some Side Effect 🙂
Thank you for this fine intel!
I’m wearing Bombay Bling and baking brownies. They will be tasty when I watch GBBO this evening.
Yes they will!!! I am tempted but will not give you any spoilers.
I watched the first episode of the Marvel show “The Inhumans” on Disney+. Those are the Inhumans I remember from the comic books. I remembered Black Bolt, Medusa, Crystal, Karnak, Gorgon and Lockjaw. Okay, comic book geek mini-celebration over. LOL
Last week I tried Agustin Reyes Royal Violets on Monday(?) for the project. That bottle was old, and the fragrance was not too good anymore. I didn’t get around to splashing on rosewater or putting on an older rose perfume last week.
I’m gradually bringing in my jasmines and scented geraniums. Now I need to figure out where to put them. The poet’s jasmine got enormous over the summer, and has dozens of buds now.
Yesterday I got a box full of bulbs I’d ordered from Old House Gardens. I had a family friend come over and take some of the tulips and hyacinths, because I didn’t think I’d get around to planting them all. Oddly, that got me motivated to plant the lilies I’d gotten and some of the remaining hyacinths, and some of the “diverse others” that were supposed to be planted as soon as possible, like the Sternbergia lutea. I was glad we had good weather for working outside yesterday and today. I’m looking forward to spring, and the fragrances of the hyacinths and the ‘Prince of Austria’ tulip, and to the fragrance of the lilies in the summer.
Take care, folks! Have a good week!
Very late to the game from travel busyness. Thanks to whomever recommended The Booksellers. I downloaded it and watched in my flights. Really interesting, especially in exploring the new directions. My husband lived in the heart of the book area of NYC years ago, so I’m encouraging him to watch also. I also downloaded Season 5 of Shetland, which I purchased at very good discount on Prime Day. My sister recommended an Italian series, Thou Shalt Not Kill, so that’s also in the queue
Line of Duty.
I’m going commando today as I only stepped out for a spot of shopping earlier this afternoon and spent the rest of the day teaching online.
The last great show I saw was Giri/Haji (Netflix) and can’t recommend it strongly enough.
