The third edition of a poll about transitional fragrances: what are your favorite fragrances as summer turns to fall? What scent makes you happy as the nights get chilly and the days take on that crisp edge? And tell us what perfume you wish you owned for chilly weather.
(Or, if you're like me, tell us what fragrances will allow you to hang on to that summer feeling just a little bit longer.)
Or, as always, talk about something else.

My favorite time of year, in every way. I’m still answering the call of Bengale Rouge, but almost ready to thunk my decant. According to Indigo Perfumes, they are expecting to replenish stock sometime in October. You’re welcome!
Just out of curiosity, has anyone read the newest Louise Penny? I found it extremely disappointing and wondering if I’m the odd man out. Also have been loving season one of “Undone.” The animation is outstanding and really lends itself to the whole questioning of reality idea behind the series. Anyone else watching it?
I am not sure if it was the most recent LP… read one not too long ago about a drug that is killing people and Gramache is named one of three executors of a will for a woman whose family lost its fortune to the Nazis—- something like that—I am already fuzzy on the details. To me it seemed on par with her other books… but I read your comment so quickly first time around that my first thought was that “Odd Man Out” was a great name for an LP mystery and I should definitely read it?
The newest just came out last month or early this month.
Someone has used that “Odd Man Out” title with great success, apparently. Haven’t seen it, but now I want to! ?https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/1015383_odd_man_out
James Mason? Yes!!!
Exactly!
I loooove James Mason. *swoon* Haven’t seen this film, though.
I just got it from the library, and was going to start it as soon as I finished the five-odd other books I’m reading. I’m a little overloaded with reading at the moment. Maybe I’ll just return it and get it again later if it’s not fantastic.
Just my opinion. You (and others) may love it. I found it contrived and unbelievable, the writing disjointed. Gamache, and some other characters (Ruth, for example) seem to have become caricatures of themselves. But don’t let me dissuade you from reading it. ?
Ok…gotcha. I think I date the “caricatures” to several books back. Does seem also like it is a common practice in these series to keep raising the stakes until the plots become sort of ridiculous, and all the more so since this one takes place mostly in a small town.
I agree 100%. The stories have all become about the myth of Gamache. It’s insufferable. I used to like them mainly for their food descriptions, but they annoy me now. If you want great food descriptions, read Donna Leon.
I really did enjoy the first few books, but I thought maybe I was being too critical re: the latter 3-4. I guess not ?
I felt the series ran out of steam a while ago. Definitely go to any Louise Penny talk in your area, though, as it would be well worth your time.
Ha! There are no “talks,” or anything of the sort here. I love the quiet, rural atmosphere and the generally kind and helpful people, but I miss a lot of other “things.” The only culture you can find hereabouts is the kind in yoghurt. Don’t know if I’m a big enough fan to attend a talk, even if talks WERE happening here. ?
But sometimes the culture one finds in yoghurt is all one needs! 🙂 🙂
By the way, I’ve been enjoying watching some videos about living in vans. Not that I intend to myself, but I was curious about what prompted people to do so. So thanks!
hehehehheehhe true enough!
I don’t think it’s for the majority of people! I kind of had a feeling I would like it based on an earlier experience of “forced minimalism” when I was in my 30’s. Plus, I learned at a very young age “things” do not create happiness. I CAN NOT WAIT to off load my house- the stress- financial and otherwise- has been a huge burden for me.
I lived in a caravan for a year in my late teens. I was living in France then and renting a room was too expensive for what I (and my parents) could afford. So I spent a year on a campground on the outskirts of town and I was totally fine about that. I don’t think I would want to repeat the experience at my current age though. But I can kind of relate as to why other people might wish to. And I sure have very good memories of spending most of my days outdoors. Good to hear that it is working out so well for you.
I think Tigerlily in San Francisco has it in stock right now – at least as of a couple of days ago.
Yes! I was there today and they had it.
I was eager to try it after all the chatter here. What a rich olfactory experience! I can see why it is getting love.
Sadly (or not sadly, because I’ve already made Donatella too proud this quarter) it’s not for me. Honey is clearly not my note.
Yum you smell awesome!
Love your avatar!
Thank you!
Agree Deva! I haven’t read the latest and probably won’t… been very disillusioned with the last several and have only continued the series because I loved the early books. Without going back and reading the first few, I wasn’t sure if my taste had changed or the writing had. I feel like the same cards are just being reshuffled in contrived plots and there’s too much preaching going on that’s very thinly veiled. Still, I do love Olivier and his partner’s relationship (the 2nd name escapes me – getting old : ) and the food descriptions, so may listen to it in the car for that, lol.
And scent for the weekend was Cartier XI Perdue – completely smitten and thanks to March at Perfume Posse for the recommendation!
I like using my old Gap Smooth Sandalwood fragrance when the temps start taking a nosedive; I use it during warmer months too but pure(ish) sandalwood always seems to fit better in the fall.
Hello darlings (Diorlings?)
I missed you all greatly! I’m back from holidays and I have to tell you that my trip in the Alps was absolutely amazing. Now back to reality and to work on Monday but I have tons of memories and hundrets of photos.
I should be fully back on track within couple of days. Looking forward to follow sotd posts again.
I loved your IG photos! And welcome back- hope you are feeling relaxed and refreshed after your trip.
Welcome back! Glad it was a great holiday for you ?
Welcome back, your trip sounds amazing.
Welcome back! Happy to hear you had a wonderful vacation time!
Glad to hear you had a great trip!
Welcome back! Look forward to hearing about your trip!
So glad you enjoyed your vacation.
Lovely to have you back, glad you had a fun holiday!
Another Saturday, another pile of laundry. But I have a book and my new Bruno Fazzolari samples to keep me company. Currently have Lampblack on one wrist and Au Dela Narcisse on the other.
Book is Big Coal by Jeff Goodell. Highly recommended; also The Water Will Come by the same author.
Love Mitsouko for transitional spring weather and all fall weather. Have been craving L’Ambre de Merveilles, which I sadly do not own.
I find vintage Mitsouko even better smelling in the fall.
I bet it’s gorgeous. I’ve never smelled vintage. I decided when I first went down the rabbit hole that I wasn’t going to seek out anything vintage. If it fell in my lap, okay, but I didn’t want to fall in love with anything of which there was a limited, hard to find supply.
…and when I first went down the rabbit hole I bought mostly vintage because it’s easy to find and inexpensive 😉
maybe we should split it 🙂 – although I guess part of the appeal is that super cute bottle!
The bottles are wonderful! I definitely need the bottle to complete my little Merveilles family. Well, I say “need”. : )
Good afternoon everyone! Wearing LADDM today. LADDM is a wonderful transition scent. Mitsouko is another fabulous transition perfume, especially the vintage version.
LADDM is a great transitional perfume for sure. I like Une Rose Chypree and Incense Rose this time of year too.
Good afternoon, NST folks! Hope you have a good weekend! 🙂
I am transitioning from citrus fragrances to vanilla, chocolate, and various spice fragrances for the fall and then the holidays.
I’m sure Robin is happy that summer temperatures will be hanging on here during the next week or so. I’m ready for temperatures in the 60s F. I’m glad it’s not freezing yet, but I get tired of summer somewhere around mid-August, if not before.
Scent so far: Last night at bedtime I sprayed my arms with Farmacia etc. Vaniglia del Madagascar. This morning, Mom said, “You’re wearing lots of perfume.” Despite some morning congestion (it’s currently hayfever season), I could still smell it, too. Nice longevity on that one. 🙂
I’ll try to think of things that I want to send off for the freebiemeet. I’m not ready at this point, but maybe I’ll put up a list tomorrow. I know that from previous freebiemeets and such I’ve ended up with four samples of Etat Libre d’Orange Fat Electrician. lol. Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate getting samples to try from the generous folks here. Sometimes there seems to be an unconscious consensus on what to give away. Mysterious…
Scent of the evening: Tried Demeter’s Christmas Tree. I’m not mentally ready for the season, but I found the fragrance to be really quite pleasant.
Very happy! It feels very much like fall here even though the temps are still warm.
I’ve been doing a lot of gourmands lately, so maybe it’s time for a switch to incense. This past week felt like it took a month to get through; some contemplative scents – Jaisalmer, Messe di Minuit, Olibanum – might be just what I need.
I should probably be permanently marinated in Ouarzazate myself 😉
Might help with managing the site this weekend. 🙂
This is my favorite time of year and while I’m not especially a pumpkin spice fan, I love spicy perfumes right now. Mauboussin Histoire d’Eau, Coco, Trayee, Chergui, the original CdG and CdG 2 among others. Roses too – DSH American Beauty, a couple Tauers mentioned above, Rosine Rose d’Homme. I would like to have a rose patchouli perfume. I bought some Rose Otto and patchouli oil on eBay and I like them together.
Today’s the first Saturday I haven’t needed to be with my mother in over a month and it’s rainy, good day to read and relax. I’ve been feeling caretaker burnout recently. Enjoy the weekend, everyone.
Rejuvenate & recharge ringthing!
Those oils sound wonderful.
Take care of yourself first! Enjoy your day, ringthing.
Take care of yourself, ringthing! I share your love of roses and patchouli.
What a great list and enjoy this weekend you have to yourself.
Feeling like the weather is behaving as it should, at least for the moment. Yesterday was cool and grey (perfect for getting down to writing when I finally knuckled down–a very short and inexpert article on diabetes (and now I am convinced I am going to get diabetes!)) And today is cool and sunny. Gave FM’s Promise another go this morning. Tested it on my husband as well. He loves it so I will slip my decant into his drawer.
Slept dreadfully last night. Tossed and turned and tossed and turned. But, there was one bonus. The light on our back deck went on, and I jumped out of bed to see what skunk or raccoon or possum was exploring (we have french doors from our bedroom that open right onto the deck). When I pulled back the curtain, a very large and handsome grey fox and I were nearly eye to eye. He blinked first and eventually made his exit, but I think we both enjoy the proximity, which lasted about 30 seconds, as we looked each other up and down.
Oooh a fox on the deck, how cool! I hope you get a restful night of sleep tonight.
Me too! Second night in a row. Blergh!
Do you remember that wonderful Annie Dillard essay where she comes eye to eye with a weasle, and shares a moment? Living like Weasles. I will look for a link
https://public.wsu.edu/~hughesc/dillard_weasel.htm
“Our look was as if two lovers…..”
That is a wild description either the eagle!!! Thanks for sharing, if you don’t mind me asking, what is the of your latest book?
I would like to read it.
Sheesh – auto correction corruption!
I don’t know where ‘either’ came from, it should say ‘of’.
I had not read her essay before– she captures well the moment when a wild animal and human are holding each other’s gaze.
But that gaze in our human interpretation is so wonderful compared to the skull’s locked jaws on the neck of the eagle. We think we are sharing a moment “for a sweet and shocking time,” but I think we are deluding ourselves. So does she, of course.
My H is always convinced he has diabetes. With no symptoms, of course. I’ve never quite understood it.
I’m sure it’s a lucky sign about the fox.
I hope so–for the fox too.
What an awesome sight! Personally, I would have probably screamed. ?
It certainly would’ve taken a long time for my heart rate to return to normal, had it been me.
Beautiful warm fall day in the 80’s. Enjoying it immensely! Commando so far. Not sure yet what I will wear after finishing some tasks at home.
The temps here are not stable yet. Some warm days like today and others barely cool. Not even my transitional perfumes seem right. I am wearing whatever my mood dictates.
Some of my usual transitional scents are L’Artisan Safran Troublant, 10 Corso Como, Prada Infusion d’Iris Absolue, Naomi Goodsir Iris Cendre.
Right now, for chillier weather I would love to have some L’Artisan Passage d’Enfer.
Happy weekend, everyone!
Hope you have a restful weekend. Nice list you’ve created for transitional perfumes! ✌?
Thank you, Deva! Trying to have a quiet weekend to regain mental and physical strength.
Wishing you and T-Rex a nice weekend! ?
We put our clocks forward an hour last night, and I’m really looking forward to the longer evenings.
I’ve continued to test my sample of Bengale Rouge, it’s getting a lot of love here, but it has too much vanilla for me. The first hour is fabulous, but the vanilla comes to the fore after that.
I’ll be doing the morning’s housework wafting Un Jardin Sur La Nile. I finished my first bottle a couple of years ago, and hadn’t yet started my BUB.
So much for a Sunday sleep-in! Still, it is nice to get longer evenings
…and I barely got any vanilla and added more!
Fall is my favorite season! Apple picking, pumpkin everything, hearty soups, cuddley sweaters, fall jackets, red lipstick, sleeping better in cool crisp weather..and mostly the fall light!
So far, when the weather turns I enjoy Shalimar and all its flankers..Omnia, Cristalle, Encens Mythique, Alahiine, Coco..just to name a few.
I am planning this fall to read the Ellena Ferrante book series, I am still reading The King Must Die, and next The Persian Boy by the same author. My friend just gave me a book, Three Women and she told me I have to read that when I take a break from my Greek Fiction kick that I am on..
I LOVED My Brilliant Friend.
Yes !! I binged it in 3 nites!! I also have the 4 book set.
So moving so realistic.
I have the set!
You binged the hbo series? I have not seen it but adored the books.
Yes- we I am not sure when it came out but I caught it last winter. HBO GO & Amazon prime carry it.
Another season being filmed I believe too!
I used to love fall for all those same reasons–I mean, when I lived in the north (Michigan and Massachusetts). My favourite season, all my life. I do miss it so much living in Texas. It’s hard to cope with the fact that there are finally some trees that turn color at around Christmastime when they’ve got all the palm trees lit up with Xmas lights! Sigh! Anyway I came to say, I think you’ll like those Ferrante books. They kept my interest, although one of the characters was very exasperating.
Did you read the whole series?
Yes! Keep going.
Fall is my favorite season, too, and for most of the same reasons.
Such a great time of year
I wish I had some Hermès 24 Fauborg for colder weather! It’s glorious when the weather is chilly.
Wearing Panda today, and I do tend to grab at this and Dragonfly in the summer-to-fall transitional period
I finally have a day off (but just one…back to work tomorrow) and I got DSH Gold Leaf in the mail just in time. I LOVE this one but I really wish she sold the EDP in 30 mls. I’m afraid I’ll do the same thing I did with White Rabbits and dither until I’ve missed my chance. I’d happily make Gold Leaf my fall scent of choice.
Sunday work twin!
Just about time to break out the Ambre des Merveilles…
Yes, please do!
One of my fall favorites! But despite the fact that it feels like fall here, and the angle of light is VERY fall, it is nearly 80.
I am in a motel up in the North Island gazing out over the beach and the Tasman Sea ( between NZ and Australia ) and I can hear a kingfisher ( angry peep, peep, peep) and the surf from my room. Back home later today, where there was a dump of snow earlier in the week. The equinox brings gusty winds and bumpy flights so will need two ‘sealegs’ and a calming perfume: Jicky. Have a good weekend everyone!
Hope the flights aren’t too bumpy!
When one day you see grinning, big blousy middle-aged broad shuffling up your front steps (garden path, driveway, whatevah!) toting some perfume samples and muttering in a California accent about wanting to visit the cemetery and the beach stretched across by the Tasman sea … just know that you have been warned.
Can I hitch a ride?
You are both very welcome, anytimme!
Seriously, there should be a group package tour of all of Kanuka’s haunts.
No kidding. With all her descriptions of scents and birdsong, it is as if SHE IS TAUNTING US. I’m in for the pay for seven nights stay for 12 special. What about you?
Me too please! I’d love to go on a tour of Kanuka’s NZ.
Wore Narciso White Cube on our drive to Burgundy. Our house has a giant kitchen, a fireplace, a big sofa and a lake with a boat. The owners are really sweet. Its marvellous! Cooked a nice dinner with kidney in dijon mustard sauce and pasta, accompanied with a nice Pinot Noir.
When you hear a knock at the front door, it’s just me coming over to visit. Sounds fabulous!
Joining you, Deva! ?
Wonderful!
You smell wonderful!
Oh, my – sounds lovely! Enjoy your time there.
How fantastic! Enjoy every minute.
All this sounds dreamy. I loved Burgundy which I visited as a teenager.
Oh yay. Have a great time tannina.
This day has been flying by even though I woke up on the early side. I spent time reading posts here and checking out the freebiemeet before going out to brunch. I wore Fille en Aiguilles since it was just hitting 50 as we headed out the door. I’ve been trying to wear at least one of my evaporating decants on the weekend, and this was this weekend’s selection. I still need a shower before heading to a small concert venue for a show this evening. I’ll probably change up my scent then.
Just spent the last couple hours making a big start on closet clean out and putting away some summer things and replacing them with sweaters. My boyfriend and I have three bags for Goodwill, plus I have a bag of vintage to try and sell to one of my favorite shops, and a bag of clothes for textile recycling. Plus we moved our portable a/c unit out of the bedroom, which allowed us to gain some space back. We’re looking to buy a new mattress before the end of the year, and I insisted that we do a big bedroom clean up and organization before a new mattress comes in. So this will be a process.
The Molton Brown shower gel gift set I bought on Zulily a week or two ago arrived yesterday. There are lots of great ones in the set that I’m excited to use: Rosa Absolue, Russian Leather, Coco & Sandalwood, Eucalyptus, and a bunch more.
Some favorite transition to fall perfumes are Cuir d’Ange, Safran Troublant, Chambre Noir, Traversee du Bosphore, Irish Leather, L’air de Rien, Fate, and Cuir d’Iris.
Congrats on the bedroom clean out!
I had to unsubscribe from zulily because it was just tempting me too much, but you just made me rethink that with your shower gel set. Lol
I’ve been doing the same this week while transitioning my seasonal wardrobes. My living room is a pile of donate bags – I just need to figure out where to take them. I’m hoping to find a women’s shelter where my stuff can go directly to some tall ladies with big feet 😉
I hope you find the perfect place to donate your things.❤️
Once I realized it was the destination, the bags got bigger and fuller and provided incentive to include stuff like socks & pajamas. A fair amount of perfume ended up in there, too. I’m assuming a good organization won’t be difficult to find.
I love the list of perfumes I see here – I guess the transition scents are my favorite kind. Trying Moulin Rouge today. So far, I can really appreciate that it’s good and clever and well done, but I’m not sure it’s me. I love the look of the bottle!
We have a guest puppy (and guest kids) this weekend, and the guest puppy looooves our dog to bits. He keeps whining at him, pawing him, licking him – but our poor guy got a massive groom today and would like some peace and quiet, I think.
My good friend invited me to go with her to a special party this morning for a cause she donates to, held at a swanky movie theatre (the kind with food and drink service, and very comfy seats), to see Downton Abbey the movie. My friend and others dressed up all in flapper clothes and it was great fun. I am not the sort to do that but could appreciate the outfits, not to mention the free champagne and food! Plus I absolutely LOVED the movie. I think even people who didn’t ever watch the TV show could enjoy the film. (You’d miss certain subtleties, of course, but it’s just so lavish and also quite funny.) I wore Queen of the Night for the party. Still so hot here, it’s hard to think myself into autumn perfumes. Probably things with sandalwood and I’d also mention Bois de Paradis.
That sounds so fun! We went to see it the night it opened but nobody was dressed up at my theater. I thought it was really good too. Maggie Smith is the best!
You’ve convinced me that I need to see this in the theater just for the visuals.
I do really recommend it, as it’s so sumptuous, and also, the audio was amazing, featuring that lovely theme song.
I saw the recent Murder on the Orient Express on the big screen and it wouldn’t have been the same had I waited for the DVD release as I usually do. Same with Coco.
I wore JM WS&SS for a hair appointment this morning, then switched to Memo Italian Leather for dinner out with Mr. G (sushi!), after planting two little trees in the back yard. On our way to dinner there was an enormous, thunder-and-lightning, pouring down rain event that was quite thrilling. Was VERY glad it held off until we were done with the tree-planting.
This time of year always has me craving perfumes that are spicy or leathery or otherwise warmer-uppers. Wore Ummagumma yesterday (from the discovery sample set) – as predicted, a bottle was on its way to me before the sun set. Enabler pins to lillyjo and perfumelover67.
Yay! So glad to hear you bought a full bottle! It is an amazing perfume. Enjoy it!
I plan to! Thanks for the nudge. ?
Yay! I’m glad you got it, enjoy!
I’m glad too … and thank you for the little push. ?
Ummagumma is sooo good but so expensive. I thought about splitting a bottle but even with a split the per ml price was too outrageous to sit with me comfortably. Congrats to you for not being the perfume miser that I am!
You’re not wrong, but having the 30ml size (and resulting smaller cash outlay) available makes it more bite-off-able, if you know what I mean.
And my tightfistedness often results in not buying bottles that really are worth the money, if you know what I mean 😉 Enjoy your purchase!
I generally wear whatever I am in the mood for no matter what the season. However for the last few days of hot weather I tend to cling to my beachy and tropical scents a lot more because I don’t reach for them as much when it’s cold (unless a need a winter pick-me-up).
Friends- I need major healing vibes! After I broke my toe the other day I came down with a massive stomach virus (I assume I caught something at the hospital). Haven’t been out of the bed for two days. Just managed to keep some crackers and broth down this evening. Please send healing vibes- I’m going crazy laying around! I’ve been commando for two days. ?
Oh no! I hope you feel better soon, KellyC! Sending healing vibes!
Hope it goes away quickly
Lots of healing vibes. I always find oneself “tested” with big moves. I once broke my humerus after starting a job in a new country. Persevere and you will be rewarded.
Bunch o healing vibes headed your way KellyC!
Oh yuck! GI stuff is the worst. Feel better soon!
Feel better soon, Kelly C!
Hope you feel better soon! I spent last fall hobbling around with a broken middle toe. It’s no fun. But stomach bugs are worse!
How unlucky, glad you could manage broth and crackers. Sending best wishes for a prompt recovery.
It really hasn’t been your week, healthwise. Joining in the wishes for a prompt recovery.
Hope you are feeling better! Not much worse that GI bugs. ?
Oh no! Sending out healing vibes and good thoughts for you.
Drat, so sorry KellyC!
Oh dear, I hope you’re feeling better very soon! Crackers and broth are a good first step.
I’m behind on my reading, hope you are feeling better by now and your toe is healing!
Perfumes I wish I owned for chilly weather?
St Clair Scents Eve and St Clair Scents Pandora. In actuality I love them so much I would wear them year round. I am waiting patiently to hear what hajusuuri has to say about them because I know she bought a very large sample of Pandora 🙂
SOTD- Calandre
Did you see Phlur now has travel sprays at Sephora? Very cool looking ?
Yes!!!! They really are cool ?
Thought of you this morning when I woke up at 3 am for the day! I thought “I bet cm8 is awake too”
?? you know it! Up before the birds!
The eldest is now working 7pm to 7am….night shift…. now that is an adjustment.
Oh gosh, I feel for her. I’ve done a few of those and they are hard. She has the beauty of youth on her side though. Continued good wishes to her!!
I think she already said on Instagram that she’s gone from the sample of Pandora to a travel spray purchase already! I’ve now ordered samples of both, based on your (and others’) raves.
Transitional fragrances for me would be leathers and Iris Cendre. I have a new love in Shaal Nur, though. Wore it to a concert where an Italian jazz pianist was playing and felt very Continental and put together.
Sounds like a very chic evening! 🙂
Shaal Nur, yum.
Happy Sunday everyone.
I wear a lot of heavy hitters in the summer, because I’m odd. For instance, I’ve work Amouage Beloved like crazy in this last 6 months.
Most of my Chanel’s haven’t felt right over summer. Rue 31 Cambon is especially right in the fall. Rose Flash will get a lot more wear too.
I want Beloved SO MUCH!! Next time I spot a decent sale I”m going for some version or sample size of it.
SotW is Tam Dao.
The cooler weather and this poll have me thinking it is just about time to switch up my perfume tray. It’s nothing fancy, just something I picked up at ikea. Fall and winter scents are my favorite…Coromandel, BoE, LADDM, Chergui, Dame BFMV and Earth Mother, White Cube, Casmir, Vanille 44, Musc Ravaguer….I’m sure I’m missing some.
Today is the last day of my online class!? I submitted my last paper yesterday so now I just wait for it to be graded. After major formatting issues with both google docs and Microsoft OneDrive, I broke down yesterday and downloaded Word on to our Mac (I should really say my wonderful, more patient and tech savvy than I husband did) and now I’m kicking myself that I didn’t do it when the class started. It would have eliminated a lot of stress and a few tears of frustration. Oh well, live and learn I guess. My next class starts tomorrow.
Hope everyone is having a good weekend.?
Congratulations! And good luck with the next class ??
Thanks lillyjo!
Congratulations! Yes, Chergui is definitely one I should have thought of.
Good morning! I’m still not wearing any perfume, but have graduated to scented lotions. I think perfumes like Coco Noir, Allure, Angel Muse are all good for this time of transition. It’s 54 degrees here now, supposed to warm up tomorrow briefly.
We are supposed to get up to 80 tomorrow after all of today’s rain moves out. Looks like your state is getting it now. ?(sorry☹️)
Yep, my feet are soaking, lol, I wasn’t prepared.
Oh, yes, you are reminding me to pull Allure out.
It really works well for the fall. I wore it last week and enjoyed it very much.
I read (or heard) someone group the seasons together as “winter-spring” and “summer-fall” at some point over the last couple of months which made me decide to see them in the same way. I have always hated fall and seen it as a harbinger of winter. I’m now enjoying it as an extension of summer. (This, of course, wasn’t really possible living in Seattle where fall & winter are basically the same thing and both miserable – fall being flood season.) Let me also say that as awful as Real Winter is, living somewhere with Real Summer is an absolute joy!
I’ve been doing some seasonal transitioning this week – both clothing and perfume – and the scents I’ve pulled are:
YSL Cinema
Ginestet Botrytis
Huitieme Poudre de Riz
JM Cardamom & Mimosa
Hermes Galop
LPRN Black Perfecto
Habanita L’Esprit
Esprit d’Oscar
Assorted patchoulis
Mon Exclusif
Dior Midnight Poison
Edward Bess La Femme Boheme
K de Krizia (I hadn’t smelled this in years, and ZOMG, glorious stuff)
I’ve also been wearing Angel Etoile des Reves almost every day, which is a marzipan-doll head wonder; yummmm
Such strange things are happening to my olfactory system. A few years ago I started being hypersensitive to certain modern woody aromachemicals and to vintage animalics. There’s all kinds of stuff I’ve loved in the past but can’t wear any more because of this.
But there are also a bunch of perfumes I didn’t really cotton to in years previous that have completely come alive in the last year. Despite having tried both VCA Bois d’Iris and Poopoo Pidoo many many times, I never liked either. They just smelled like sweet uninteresting muddle. I’ve worn both in the past couple of months and a gorgeous dry papery wood note has emerged that I’d never smelled before. Is this what other people pick up with these? I also tested Theorema the other day and finally got the creamsicle note. It never really smelled like much of anything to me until recently.
I also used to classify myself as one of those with Scent Eating Skin. Now there are tons of perfumes that are so overpowering that more than 1 spray shared between wrists is too much; others that used to fade within hours last all day (if not longer.)
What gives? Genetics? Biology? Hormones? Change of climate?
I find this so interesting! Having just fallen down the rabbit hole myself, I don’t have any personal experience with changing scent perception, but look forward to other people’s observations.
I think changing perceptions is something everyone experiences to some extent (the perfume you loved 3 years ago fails to move, etc.) but I’m thinking this is happening on a biological/olfactory level. It’s very very odd.
Will also add that my sister has the same response to the woody aromachemical(s.) I had her smell some stuff that smells awful to me, and that doesn’t, and we responded in the same way. As in, pure olfactory torture 😉
Man, I love Bois d’Iris. There’s an odd note that makes me think of black licorice for a few instants that I don’t love, but the rest (something like driftwood drying in the sun, the. Cut wood, the vanilla, the Iris, the cozy ness that still somehow depicts space and airiness) is just perfect to me. Like you, it wasn’t an immediate love but it’s grown on me for years.
In terms of the change in sensitivity, have your had bloodwork recently? I have had really dry skin and have found some underlying stuff was going on. Not a bad thing to check it every few years.
Huh, weird. I have really dry skin, too (something I’ve only realized recently as I’ve always moisturized every inch of my skin and figured everyone else needed too, as well.)
Incidentally I have had really extensive bloodwork done recently, though it wasn’t necessarily the standard stuff. Can I ask what showed up in yours? They ran 43 (!) tests at Functional Medicine and the only thing that was not what it should be is a persistent and active Epstein Barr infection. (Or virus, I guess. I took an anti-viral for it for 2 months and my numbers didn’t budge.)
Glad that it does finally feel like fall around here, at least for the moment. Kooky the cat has declared that it’s too cold, he spent all day yesterday burrowed under covers.
Scent of the moment is Crabtree & Evelyn lavender lotion. Later, my scent will be sweat, cobwebs, wood, and mouse yuck… it is time to clean out the woodshed and rack all the firewood for the winter. DH does the splitting, I do the racking, and this year I have to replace all the rack covers which means wrassling the old filthy nasty ones off the racks. Fun!! But I’ll be glad of the end result, anyway.
Good morning! 🙂
Scent of the morning: Comptoir Sud Pacifique Vanille Extreme. I’ll probably go swimming in the afternoon, so I’ll likely do a scent of the evening after that.
Tea so far: iced decaf green, from Wegman’s. I find Wegman’s store brand tea pretty good. I’ll make another bottle of jasmine green today, most likely. I’ll stay with the iced tea versions until it feels like actual fall. 🙂
Jealous of Wegmans. I may actually brave the hoards when the Brooklyn one opens….
When I was working as a home health aide last year for a senior citizen who had grown up in Manhattan, he was quite amused at how proud the people at the local Wegman’s were about how their food was imported from Rochester, NY.
I told him that it was also a huge culture shock for my mother when we moved to the far western suburbs of Philadelphia in 1980. The area has gotten more built up in recent years, but there wasn’t that much around here at the time. Mom was used to living quite near New York City, and having the Paramus Mall nearby, too.
You already have access to a far richer variety of food in New York City than any particular grocery store chain can provide. Although I’ll admit that it may be easier to have some of the things together in one place.
Yes. The big farmers market downtown is great, but I will say my nearby grocery stores leave much to be desired. When I’d head back to CA to see my parents I’d find the huge grocery stores so exotic after our neighborhood small ones here. It’s a little of that. A shiny new object.
I haven’t developed seasonal preferences yet. This will be my first winter down the rabbit hole, so I’ll report back next year!
SOTD is You Or Someone Like You, because it was the only sample in my purse. Was rushing out if the house early this morning to meet my mum at an antique fair.
Yesterday finally went to Tigerlily in SF. Sniffed a lot. Walked away with Yellow Rose an EDT from a local perfumer (L’Aromatica or Laro, the branding is a bot confusing; my bottle says Laro but both names are found online). Bright citrus opening with some juicy rose. Short lived, but I love that opening. I’ll just spray liberally and frequently!
Haven’t thought much about fall scents…. I’m wearing California Rêverie today, which is a mild day. Not too hot, not too cool.
I think Kiss Me Intense is a good fall scent, as is Coromandel, Tolu, Twilly, Kelley Caleche, Cuir de Lancôme. Leathers are good as the weather cools.
Had to get up early and couldn’t get to sleep last night. After about 45 minutes, I pulled out my Kindle and read for awhile. Odd, since I took a long walk through Central Park yesterday. Oh well. Hopefully means a good sleep tonight…
It’s still warm (if not verging on hot) here, too. But all the leaves on the ground (and cool mornings) have me thinking of knee-high boots and sweaters and glorious fall perfumes. I couldn’t help but get a jump on it 😉
It’s making me realize I’m behind on knitting projects…. we hit a day of unseasonable warm temps later this week, then it drops.
Expecting the same weather here. I got a jump on it by pulling out some soon-to-be-needed sweaters and brushing out all the pills, which were making them look ratty and old. Not knitting, but it sure involved a lot of loose yarn! 😉
In things I may need for fall, the main one I think of is Bottega Veneta. But, I’ll be holding off.
I forgot about BV. That’s a great fall weather scent!
I’m hanging on to summer in spite of the multiple rain showers of these past few days (but we needed rain, so I know nature is happy) by wearing Molton Brown Ylang-Ylang a very good Ylang.
To transition, I know already I’ll be wearing a lot of YR Folie de Saisons Delires d’Automne, Caleche, Bottega Veneta Rose Velours, l’Air de Rien, Fleur Oriental and many others which don’t occur to me at present.
Fleur Oriental is a big favorite of mine, particularly in cooler weather. (Note to all Powderheads: You Need This.) I’m curious about Powdered Veil – have you tried it? I signed up for emails from Miller Harris before realizing that shipping to the US is so exorbitant that ordering from the site would never be practical.
Side Q to US NSTers – anyone have a good resource for Miller Harris? The UK site has travel bottles and small sets but I’m not sure if they have a US presence.
Fleur Oriental has been with me for a number of years and I still enjoy it very much, only criticism is that it should be orientale with an e as fleur is feminine (that’s the French in me who objects). Sorry I haven’t tried Powdered Veil, and being in the UK I’m in the dark about a possible US source. Good luck.
They are scarce here! FragranceNet, FragranceX, Perfume.com and Feelunique all carry a selection but not the whole line. I think Perfume.com has more than the other sites.
I’ve bought a couple of Miller Harris’ on eBay from one seller in particular, and I think I bought one from fragrancenet.
Hi all – my SOTD is vintage Samsara parfum. Perfect for cool mornings and warmer afternoons as SF is apt to be later on today.
I imagine the parfum is wonderful! How does it compare to the edp?
Hi Laura – I get more sandalwood and tonka from the parfum, it’s plush and velvety. The EDP is greener to my nose, more ylang ylang-forward.
Plush and velvety!?
Sotd: Volutes edt
Fall is not my favorite season. However, I consider several of my absolute favs to be “fall” scents. ?♀️ These are a few of my fall loves- Coco, Chergui, Volutes, Theorema, Eau Duelle.
Btw, the freebie meet….????
I started the day in Eau Lente and sprayed Esprit du Tigre in the evening. Both scents have a lot of clove, but Eau Lente is definitely my favorite – delicious and resinous. Esprit du Tigre is a little too medicinal for my taste, although I am enjoying it today.
I am so curious about Eau Lente. Kevin mentioned it in a review and it had stayed in the back of my mind. Do you know if it has been discontinued?
I think I lost track of all these discontinuations. Thank you. It’s a shame. One of the few Diptyque perfumes I like.
Fall is my favorite season. It is still quite hot here in Texas but I know the days of 95 degree highs are numbered. I am still wearing some summer scents – Bronze Goddess – but knowing I will soon be rotating to my out of season location on my dresser. I started in on my incense fragrances – Avignon and Cardinal.
I have been quite good for 2019, no purchases, but thinking of pulling the trigger on Note de Yuzu, after draining my sample.
Note de Yuzu is a great perfume! Hopefully, you will get that full bottle soon! ?
Where are you in Texas? A few of us are in Houston.
I am not a fan of fall as it already snowed here yesterday.. bleh. But I do like wearing spicer, sweeter scents for the cooler months..clove, woody-incensey resiny and licorice notes:).
Posting late again. I’m wearing one of my favorite transitional scents today, T’Aif. It doesn’t work for me when it’s too hot or too cold but it’s perfect for this time of year when day’s are warm and nights are cool. Other transitional favorites are Vientiane, Box of Eels, Datura Noir, Kiss Me Tender, 1876 Mata Hari, Equistrius, Calypso, Gris Montaigne, Fleur de Peau, Safran Troublant and so many others.
I love Ta’if. You smell lovely.
Ta’if is spectacular! I love Equestrius, too. I don’t hear or see a lot about that one on the blogs and boards.
This reminds me to take my bottles of Ta’if and also OJ Woman out of the cabinet to put in circulation.
It has been literally YEARS since I’ve posted here, and I’ve taken a three-year hiatus from buying any perfume. I’m no longer working, which makes me eye my perfume stash with a suspicion that I won’t use up the bottles before I die, and I don’t even have that many! I still wear perfume at home just for myself. Recently I’ve been fighting a strong anti-austerity urge and am highly focused on fragrances again.
I am also working on willing summer to JUST GO AWAY ALREADY. I’m from the Pacific Northwest but am now living in Texas. Instead of 9-month winters, I get 9-month summers, and my nervous system just can’t handle it.
So it’s still too early for Botrytis, Chergui, Fille en Aigilles, etc. But florals work now better than they would have in July. And a little rich fruit number can remind me of the harvest season that I carry in my mind (I am surrounded by miles of flat cotton fields).
Today I settled on Plum by Mary Greenwell, the only one of its kind in my collection. Now if I could just layer that with something that smells of fall leaves in the rain, I’d be completely happy!
Welcome back!
Fall leaves in the rain… hm… that does sound nice
Doesn’t it, though? I’m remembering golden leaves falling, mushroom hunting, apple cider pressing, the smell of Douglas Firs . . .
Another (imported) Texan here, checking in to say hi!
Hi, Calypso. Where in Texas country are you? I’m in the Panhandle. Not by choice.
Oh, I see from an earlier comment that you are in the Houston area. Any good perfume shopping to be had there? I will be in Houston at the end of October.
I rediscovered Carner Barcelona’s Rima XI. I had forgotten about it, way back in my closet. All those gorgeous spices – cardamom, nutmeg, pepper, saffron, coriander, and cinnamon on a gorgeous sandalwood and benzoin base.
I’ve been reading Chernobyl. I think I need a light novel to escape to after this one.
Have a great week, everyone!
I’m in Lonesome Rider today, a nice one for transitioning into fall. We had temps in the low 90’s this weekend, so it’s not exactly fall here yet. ?
I am in D. S. & Durga Coriander today. Saw the bottle and just felt like putting some on.
Just wanted to say thanks so much for all the sweet healing vibes! I felt them! Feeling MUCH better today. Still taking it easy and can’t eat way too much but at least holding down what I do eat. Yay!
Holding on to summer today in Bronze Goddess. It’s cooled down here so nicely the past two days!
Glad to hear it, KellyC!
Trying a decant if Rolling in Love, Kilian. Not at all what I was expecting. It’s nice, but I was expecting va va voom.
It has turned cold enough where I live that I must abandon short sleeves and capri pants. Boo Hiss. So that means it is time for full-on Autumn fragrances, which to me are all those with spice, coffee, and incense. Today I am in DSH Cimabue. Tomorrow I will be bringing out the Jo Malone Ginger and Nutmeg, then the numerous offerings from Solstice Scents, etc. One fragrance that I have been looking for is Neil Morris October, I haven’t tried but it looks to be a possible perfect Autumn scent. Looking to swap for a sample if anyone wants to share!
