Folks in the UK have probably already seen this umpteen times, but in case anyone elsewhere missed it, here is the John Lewis & Partners Christmas advert with Elton John. Some people loved it. Some people didn't.
Below the jump, Waitrose puts the focus back on what really matters.
I thought it was great!
Glad you enjoyed it š
Agree! It’s pitch perfect for the holidays if you ask me. I teach music to young children, including private piano students, so I identify strongly with the magical moments connected to music in many lives.
I love all three videos, stollen, and the one with the penguin.
Will not read the article, don’t need any negativity at the moment thank you very much. š
I LOVED it!
Good!
Love them both. Thanks for sharing.

Well, I have no opinion about Elton John or the advert either way, but the article by the opposition was very heart felt ?
Ha, yes it was. But I think these generate ire partially because as I understand it, they play these non-stop in the UK.
And here’s another funny one from Waitrose that riffs on the John Lewis ad (Waitrose & Partners is apparently a sister co.) Even funnier to watch after you watch the Elton John link above.

Hahahahahaha!!!Awesome!!??
AHA, and had heard about that but when I saw the video above, thought that was it and thought it was not as funny as I expected…I just didn’t find the right ad! Thanks springpansy.
Iāve never had any particular disposition about Elton John but having nothing better to do this morning I watched the advert first and read the article second, and I must say that the video made me feel warm and the article left an unpleasant aftertaste. While the advertās statement and intent are simple and straightforward, Iām not sure about the article. Hmmm… let me think… had it not been for a gift of piano, Elton John would have grown up a much nicer and less temperamental person? Such as the āindependent journalistā who wrote that vile article and to support whose opportunity to keep doing that in the end of that article the paper tries to get money from the readers – unlike John Lewis does, of course š
Based on what I saw and read, I feel more inclined to spend money on gifts than on supporting that kind of anāindependent journalism.ā
I liked the ad as well and thought the message was a good one. The article was very bitter, and the writer’s suggested alternative ad is ridiculous. I am not defending crude or crass behavior, but how well would any of us fare if someone would put together a retrospective of our worst moments and rudest actions?
I can’t imagine working myself into a state of high dudgeon as that writer of the article has over Elton John. Surely most people realize that human beings are rarely 100% sinner or 100% saint. And surely most people realize that the point of a Christmas advert is not to highlight bad behavior?
I’ll link to my favorite John Lewis ad; frolicking animals at Christmas, how can you go wrong? š https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4qo27xcVS5I
That’s my favorite too! A classic. Thanks for sharing it Aparatchick.
Loved it!
The Captain Fantastic album…oh boy.One of those rare albums that defines a moment in time of oneās own life and history.

I loved the ad, particularly the littlest Elton’s expressions after he runs down the stairs and looks at his Mum and Gran! It’s not an ad about EJ, it’s an ad about the joy that music gives us, either by playing or hearing. It is a wonderful gift to be introduced to it at a young age, and for myself it has the most amazing healing powers.
To the author of the article: Stink! Stank! Stunk! ???
Must row against the tide: I appreciate The Guardian’s take on things. No one, especially public figures, are above criticism…that would be scary times. EJ criticizes public figures right and left! Unprompted.
The ad left me cold (when I wasn’t blushing at the corniness).
“If we can deal with him, we can deal with you” – HeHeHe.
That Waitrose advert is priceless! Thanks for sharing it Robin.
Happy Holidays to everyone celebrating something.
